He’s 9-4 with a 2.05 ERA and .83 WHIP and facing the bottom-dwelling Detroit Tigers. If that’s not a number one pick, then I’m a Chinese jet pilot. Patrick Corbin, SP: Middle – Remember when he was killing it earlier in the year? He’s not quite there again, but he’s been making strides, and today he’s taking on an Atlanta Braves team that’s managed to hit only .179 with a .496 OPS against him.
Joe Musgrove, SP: Late – Musgrove has been toiling for the Pittsburgh Pirates and has quietly put up a 3.77 ERA this year. He’s a sneaky play against the surprising Milwaukee Brewers, who’ve managed to hit him to only a .214 batting average and .670 OPS.
Nolan Arenado, IF: Early – This MVP candidate is hitting at the cozy confines of his home park, Coors Field in Colorado, where he’s hitting .361 with a 1.132 OPS. Against Mike Leake of the Seattle Mariners, Arenado hits a Ruthian .375 with a 1.500 OPS, including 2 home runs in 8 at-bats.
Mookie Betts, OF: Early – This man can do almost anything on the baseball diamond, including making a 7+ minute at-bat feel like the thrill ride of a lifetime. He’s currently leading the league with a .362 batting average, and in the last week has hit 4 doubles, 2 triples, a home run, and a stolen base thrown in. He’s tormenting the Blue Jays and that should continue today, with J.D. Martinez protecting him in the lineup.
Xander Bogaerts, IF: Middle – Like the rest of his Red Sox team, Bogaerts is on fire. Today he faces the Blue Jays’ Marcus Stroman, whom Xander has mashed to a .385 batting average with a .831 OPS. There will be plenty of Dirty Water dancing at Fenway Pahhhhhhk.
Dee Gordon, IF: Middle – Seattle is in Colorado and even the swift, light-hitting speedster Dee Gordon has a respectable .785 OPS at Coors field. He’s hitting .318 over the last week, and that outfield has plenty of space for singles to turn into doubles.
Mitch Haniger, OF: Middle – The Rockies’ Tyler Anderson has been good lately, but Haniger is 3rd overall in the AL in RBIs, and Hittertron loves this lefty-righty match-up (4th hitter overall on the day!) in Coors. He may not spring immediately to your competitors’ minds and make for a good mid-round pick.
Joey Gallo, IF: Late – I know he’s only hitting, gulp, .188, but he’s at Camden Yards in Baltimore, where he has hit .333 with a 1.833 OPS over the past few years. A sneaky late power source who will be vastly overlooked.
Ian Desmond, OF: Late – Did I mention the Rockies were at home today? Mr. Desmond has been making the most of his time in Colorado, and hits today’s Mariners starter, Mike Leake, to a .346 batting average with a .821 OPS. An excellent late-round pick.
I’m Only Happy When It Rains
It’s not quite a dark and stormy night, but there’s a lot of weather to watch today. There is a chance of a thunderstorm in Atlanta for Braves and Diamondbacks, Pittsburgh for Pirates and Brewers, St. Louis for Cardinals and Reds, and Denver for Rockies and Mariners.
