Mike Pelfrey went from totally chic to totally geek in the matter of 4 starts.  Last night, he dropped a 4 2/3 IP, 7 ER bomb and now he’s staring at nickels.  Pardon the wavy lines as we jump in The Way Back Machine and see what I said in April, “His K-rate prior to 2010 was pretty poor.  Even this year, it’s only a little above his career mark.  His biggest adjustment so far seems to be his ability to avoid the homer ball and leave men on base.  He can be usable as a 4th fantasy starter, especially in Metco.”  And that’s me copying and pasting me!  Nothing’s really changed other than he’s no longer leaving men on base, his homers have gone up (literally) and his lack of Ks are catching up to him.  Hmm… Maybe some stuff has changed.  He had a 1.98 ERA at Metco prior to last night, so that’s still a nice matchup start, but Pelfrey is no longer a must own.  At 109 IP on the year and only 67 Ks, he’s a notch below Jon Garland in K-rate.  I just popped a zit in the mirror and spelled out, “You can probably do better than Pelfrey.”  Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:

Jose Reyes – Supposed to return on Tuesday.  I really want to believe this, but the Met doctors are a joke.  Did they go to that med school Steve Guttenberg went in Bad Medicine?

Shin-Soo Choo – Thumb-Soo Blue now might need surgery and could be out for the season.  Is this all a ploy for him to avoid his army service time?  We must have a commenter in Canada who could take him in.  Volunteers?

Mike Gonzalez – Won’t return until after the All-Star break.  As previously mentioned, Alfredo will continue to get saves now and when Mike G. first returns.  From there, I imagine names will go into Juan Samuel’s hat and he’ll pull one out.  Hey, New ERA’s now the closer! Um, that’s the tag.

Jake Fox – 3-for-5 and now has 2 homers in his last two starts.  Not starting every day, but I’d grab him now in AL-Only leagues and watch closely how his playing time shakes out for mixed leagues.  Hey, New ERA’s now starting at 1st base! Still the tag, Juan.

Chase Utley – Saying he won’t need the full 8 weeks of recovery time.  I believe Utley can return early.  Still, a hand issue that won’t have him on the field until late-August isn’t something you should go out of your way to acquire.

Roy Halladay – 9 IP, 1 ER, 6 baserunners, 7 Ks vs. the Braves.  It’s one thing to face Halladay, but I can’t even imagine how difficult it must’ve been for the Braves with Russia still occupying Georgia.

Cliff Lee – Supposedly, the Phillies were scouting The Adverb.  I wonder if the scout went to Vegas, got himself a hooker and some blow while pretending to scout Cliff Lee because HE WAS JUST ON THEIR TEAM!  Whoa, Cap’n Caps, easy.  SORRY.

Russell Branyan – Now has three homers since joining the Mariners.  Had 31 homers last year and has 13 now.  You do the math!

Jose Valverde – 1 IP, 2 ER, Kazaam!

Jonathan Sanchez – 6 IP, 1 ER, 11 baserunners, 6 Ks.  Man, that WHIP is messy.  What a slob!  No wonder he goes by Filthy Sanchez.  According to me.  But we’ll pretend he goes by that on every site on the interwebs.

Pablo Sandoval – 1-for-4 and batting .269.  Maybe he’s uncomfortable carrying around those extra 75 pounds.  Let’s get him and the Sandovals on Losing It With Jillian.  I’d love to see Sandoval’s family all try to lose weight together.  “Mama, did you put extra mayonnaise on my lard sandwich?”  Mama Sandoval looks guilty then, “No.”

Buster Posey – 2-for-4 with his third homer.  All he does is hit homers (once a week).

Tom Gorzelanny – 5 IP, 3 ER, 11 baserunners, 4 Ks.  I’ve seen better starts, but let’s be clear about something.  Gorzelanny isn’t an ace.  He’s a number five fantasy starter.  He still has a 3.31 ERA on the year and is worth starting in favorable matchups.

Ian Kennedy – 5 2/3 IP, 7 ER, 9 baserunners, 6 Ks.  Member when I said to lose him in last week’s Buy/Sell?  Yup.

Adam LaRoche – Hit his 13th homer yesterday in the Diamondbacks’ 83rd game.  LaRoche meet 2nd half of the 162 game schedule, 2nd half say wassup to LaRoche.

Krispie Young – 2-for-3, 2 steals while hitting leadoff.  Now has 15 homers and 16 steals on the year.  Yeah, Krispie’s been better than your other outfielders.  Yup, even that one.

Kosuke Fukudome – 2-for-3 and his 7th homer.  Keep in mind his playing time is very iffy right now but he gets crazy hot for a week or two at a time.  This game might’ve be the start of something.  Either way, the choice is yours.  Doo, da, dippity.

Geovany Soto – 3-for-4, 2 Runs and 2 RBIs.  Somehow the Cubs pulled out the win with Koyie Hill on the bench.

Alexei Ramirez – Now has two homers in two games while hitting over .400 in the last week.  Definitely worth owning though I’m not sure where his steals have been this year.  Did they have visa issues?

Carlos Quentin – Hit 2 homers yesterday.  Frequent commenter, Steve, summed up the thoughts of current Quentin owners yesterday when he said, “Oh, Quentin, I am so glad I drafted you/dropped you/picked you up/dropped you again/picked you back up.”

Gavin Floyd – 7 IP, 1 ER, 7 baserunners, 4 Ks.  Hasn’t allowed more than 2 runs in a start in over a month.  Yeah, you should own him.

Bobby Jenks – Pitched in the 8th inning of 7-1 game.  I know what you’re thinking, “What’s Ozzie thinking?”  Good question.  Ozzie supposedly wants Jenks to get some action before being the closer again because he was away on bereavement leave.  And Ozzie wants to confuse fantasy owners.  That too.  I’d grab Thornton if he’s available.

Dayan Viciedo – Hit his first major league homer.  Worth monitoring in AL-Only leagues (as if you don’t have enough to do!), but his playing time has been sporadic.

Mark Teixeira – Hit his 14th homer yesterday.  PABST (Post All-Star Break Stats Teixeira) getting a jump on the All-Star break so I guess this was a premature jacking.

Jayson Nix – 2 homers in yesterday’s game.  Jaymes Nix got drunk and called Laynce to ask him how come he can’t be more like Jayson.

Matt Garza – 3 IP, 4 ER, 9 baserunners, 1 K.  Of course I sat Garza when he pitched well last week in Fenway and started him yesterday for this crizzap at home.  Of course, I did!  When I yell obscenities at telemarketers, I call them Garza.

Eric Patterson – 2 homers and now has 6 homers on the year.  Not quite as bonkers as it sounds… Okay, it’s a little bonkers, but he hit 14 homers in Triple-A one year and 12 homers in Triple-A last year.  For those desperate for anything at MI, you could probably do worse.

Matt LaPorta – LaPo hit another homer yesterday then was removed with a head bruise from his collision with Andrus.  After the bump on the head, LaPorta thought he was Ginger from Gilligan’s Island.

Joey Votto – Hit 2 homers.  Yeah, but Omar Infante can play 4 positions.

Erik Bedard – Was due to pitch on Tuesday, but he’s dealing with a stiff shoulder.  We’re actually lucky this happened.  If Bedard came back while Ben Sheets was healthy, that would’ve caused a major shift in the Time VORP Continuum.

  1. Eric says:

    uhhh you’re wrong grey. I’m pretty sure the Mets’ docs all went to Hollywood Upstairs Medical College – the school that Dr. Nick Riviera attended.

  2. Howard says:

    Great headline Grey! I can take Choo as long as he doesn’t say “gezundheit” whenever I call him!
    I own Pelfrey AND Garland in a 20 team league. I should have traded him when his value was high. Then Jenks comes in and…Kazaam!
    Speaking of trading, a guy in my 12 team H2H league is trying to move Latos and Medlen. I have Posey and Stanton riding the pine. Fair trade or giving up too much? Maybe a donkeycorn and Medlen? Thanks!

  3. Willie Norwood says:

    Lovely roundup, Grey. It helped make my team’s hideous day go down easier. If I wanted to pick up Gavin Floyd, should I dump Garza or Jenks? I have similar depth at SP and RP, but would like to add some guys that suck a little less. Thanks.

  4. Howard says:

    Concussion Rocks La Porta Prince…Matt, we hardly knew ya!

  5. Derrick says:

    Wandy is sitting on the WW. Do I drop Bedard to pick him up?

  6. barker says:

    drop ely for zambrano in a deep 20 team league??

  7. Daniel says:

    Viciedo’s playing time may not be as sporadic as you may think when you consider that Vizquel is on ice after taking a Feldman fastball to his 43-year old knee and the soon to be returning Mark Teahen is just one great big pile of suck.

  8. GregG says:

    LaPorta’s profile pic on yahoo: “I don’t look this partied out most of the time. Only once does LeBron hand you the keeeeeys to his city, bitches….”

  9. AJ says:

    I have a question that’s unrelated to today’s roundup, but will most certainly be touched on in tomorrow’s (in one way or another) — What is the deal with Wandy Rodriguez?

    He’s been dreadful for much of the season, yet has had two pretty good starts in a row….. the big confusion is that he was a top-40 pitcher by just about everyone coming into the season. Has he recaptured his previous form? Or is there some sort of issue here, and have the last two starts just been an optimistic mirage?

    Essentially, is it time to cut bait, OR… is now the time to buy, as he’s about to turn things around completely and explode?

  10. AL KOHOLIC says:

    Ha,great post as usuall,Votto is raking

  11. AL KOHOLIC says:

    arizona relievers have blown 14 of 30 saves opps.and thier hitters have k,d 761 times,the reds have 26 come from behind wins,15 in thier last at bat,and the lowly astros have only hit 48 hr,s this year with toronto hitting120

  12. ThePoonTycoon says:

    on may 1, who would have thought that by the all-star break, javier vazquez would be closing in on matt garza in era? i don’t think anyone expected garza to be a sub-2.00 era SP or vazquez to be a 9.00 era SP, but given how they were each pitching, no sure anyone predicted them to be in a collision course at around 4.50 so soon.

  13. Wiley says:

    Would you take LaRoche over Panda in the second half? It’d be for a utility/platoon position as I already have Miggy at 1st and the mini-donkey at 3rd.

  14. big o says:

    drop old abreu for pagan ?

  15. mgeoffriau

    Mark Geoffriau says:

    V-Mart owner here, trying to trade with a catcher-heavy team in my league. He’s got Wieters, Santana, and Olivo. Santana’s untouchable, I feel like Olivo could fall off a cliff at any point, but Wieters could rebound, so he’s been my target.

    Offer Smoak for Wieters? It’s a keeper league, but Smoak isn’t keeper-eligible, and Wieters is (though at a fairly unattractive price unless he rakes in 2nd half).

  16. ThePoonTycoon says:

    @big o: @AL KOHOLIC: admittedly not a big abreu fan here, but why drop him?

    .256 8 HR 44 RBI 47 R 14 SB
    .305 5 HR 39 RBI 44 R 15 SB

    seems to be that abreu’s avg is a little low but otherwise is right about where you’d expect him to be. pagan has been unremarkable in 4 previous MLB seasons.

    if you asked me who has better stats come sept, i’d go with abreu everyday of the week.

    i could see sitting abreu for a hot pagan for a week or 2, but i wouldn’t drop abreu to pick up pagan.

  17. AL KOHOLIC says:

    id rather try for a suzuki,maybe even grab pasada off waivers,the all star break could rest him for a hot 2nd half start

  18. ThePoonTycoon says:

    @Mark Geoffriau: if smoak is unkeepable, then might be hard to pull off the deal unless the guy is really buying into smoak getting hot. he knows he’s in the power position and probably wants something that is gonna help him immediately or that he could at least potentially keep for cheap next year.

  19. AL KOHOLIC says:

    @ThePoonTycoon: not sure what size league he,s in,but those numbers arnt that hard to get picking up hot players of the week,i wouldnt consider either my starter for the year

  20. mgeoffriau

    Mark Geoffriau says:

    @ThePoonTycoon: Well, Smoak’s not exactly unkeepable, but we have stiff penalties for keeping players that have been added/dropped. But I just think this guy is committed to Santana….he’s been sending me Wieters/Olivo offers since V-Mart was injured. Appreciate it, we’ll see what happens.

  21. ThePoonTycoon says:

    @AL KOHOLIC: eh, but you are assuming you always pick up the hot bat, when you pick up the hot bat they stay hot, and you always drop them before they crap a 2-28 week on your stats. much easier to say you are just gonna ride the hot bat than to actually nail every hot bat you’d need to nail at the right moment in order for the theory to actually work.

  22. bobbo says:

    Please rank as a bench player for the rest of the year who can help out in R, SB, and OBP:

    Borbon, N Morgan, R Davis, Fowler

  23. ThePoonTycoon says:

    @AL KOHOLIC: also at this point in the season, the waiver wire is pretty void of guys that are spontaneously going to get hot in a 12+ team league. most unexpected producers are owned, and it’s pretty unlikely a guy that’s sucked nor has a track record that’s kept him rostered all season is spontaneously going to explode anything more than .330-2-7 type weeks with a whole lot of crap thrown in to filter through.

  24. AL KOHOLIC says:

    @ThePoonTycoon: no im just not content with those numbers,they wont win many leagues

  25. ThePoonTycoon says:

    @bobbo: throw a dart. i have borbon in all my leagues after he was dropped and started heating up i picked him up. i think the SBs go up in the 2nd half. but take your pick.

  26. ThePoonTycoon says:

    @AL KOHOLIC: who is relying on abreu to win you a league? i wouldn’t have drafted him as anything more than an OF3.

    assuming the avg stays lower than normal, he’s still on pace for 15 HRs, 85 Rs, 85 RBIs, 26 SBs or so. not unreasonable to expect the avg to get around .275 or so by the end of the year and the RBI/R/SB totals to be a little higher than currently projecting.

    that’s pretty solid well-rounded production.

    if you think grabbing angel pagan is getting you anywhere, enjoy him in a few weeks when he undoes a week’s worth of “abreu-type” stats with a week of 2 for 28 numbers while you frantically try to find the “next hot bat” after your leaguemates smartly grab abreu off waivers and drop mike stanton or some shit.

  27. AL KOHOLIC says:

    @bobbo: @ThePoonTycoon: yeah playing time for all of those guys is a key,if crisp gets traded the davis could re-emerge but bourbon seems to be todays pick,@ThePoonTycoon: old timers dont bother me any,the guy leading our rcl originals league has vlad,konerko ,wells and maglio,the old farts are killing us all by 20 points

  28. ThePoonTycoon says:

    @AL KOHOLIC: “old timers dont bother me any”

    even more baffling to me that you’d drop abreu for pagan

    like i said, bench abreu if he’s cold and pagan is hot for a few weeks, but i wouldn’t drop abreu for pagan ever unless abreu gets hurt and is out for the season

  29. bobbo says:

    @ThePoonTycoon: Yeah that’s who I am currently rostering, but Fowler has looked like a beast since his call up so was just curious what everyone thought. Borbon hitting 9th annoys me though… and the dude just cannot take a walk.

  30. AL KOHOLIC says:

    @ThePoonTycoon: are you in the razz football ?

  31. AL KOHOLIC says:

    @bobbo: you wouldnt be hurt going with fowler,in fact im sure thats who grey would say for now,again all of them can be benched any time with borboun being in the safest position but batting down in the order

  32. Shack says:

    I’m an Utley owner and have been feeling down, but today I opened an e-mail from a fantasy foe entitled: Utley? YESSSSSS! We’re in a H2H and he thinks he’ll come back in the last few weeks and be worth a damn. So he’ll give me a decent SP for Utley. Should I go for it? Choices are:
    Anibal Sanchez
    Trevor Cahill
    Max Scherzer

    Utley is hoping to cut 2 weeks off his recovery and be back mid-August. Playoffs start for me September 3 and I don’t need an SP from him to get in. I’d rather have a decent Utley.

  33. ThePoonTycoon says:

    @AL KOHOLIC: i read it during football season, but not in a razzball league, no

    @bobbo: yeah, i might take a chance on fowler that he put it together in his stint in the minors. i did check all my leagues the other day to see if he was available and he was already gone, so i’m still on borbon.

  34. ThePoonTycoon says:

    @Shack: if you don’t need those SPs then hold utley and hope he comes back raking. be like getting a free top tier hitter just in time for the playoffs.

  35. Ron Washington's Stache says:

    Long term, Padilla or Matusz?
    Also, Wakefield has been historically good vs. TB, but I worry those numbers are bolstered by the pre Longoria days.
    Is he a decent spot start tomorrow vs. TB?

  36. AL KOHOLIC says:

    doc has done an awesome job with the football,great post,great info,but playing 1 day a week really limits weekly chats as the baseball does

  37. Between Krispie (Krispie! Can we officially change his name to Krispie! ™ ) Gavin Floyd, and the Carlosii (Misters Quentin and Santana), we just might make a season of this yet. To paraphrase De La Soul, my team is now Third Place High and Rising.

    Despite your callous “sell” recommendation on Beltran, looks like he’ll be activated sooner rather than later. Was going to drop Alvarez, but suddenly Pirate Jr is looking like he’s figuring it out. (Plus, I need a 3Bman more than an OF.) I cut Chipper to activate Aramis “Now MLB’s 4th Best” Ramirez.

    Time to cut bait on Stanton, at least for now? 20 (years old) plus 8 (spot in the lineup) does not add up for me.

    Other OFs, for context, are Krispie!, Delmon “The Other Useful” Young, Brett Gardner, and Carlos Q, with Lind trying to hit his way back into the lineup from the bench.

  38. ThePoonTycoon says:

    @AL KOHOLIC: yeah, i’ve never been as much of a fantasy football fan as i am baseball.

    for instance, last season i was the top scorer in both my leagues, however, i also had the most points scored against me and finished 3rd and 4th in my 2 leagues, therefore missing the bye and having to play in week 1 of the playoffs. in both leagues i end up playing against the same trio of shaub, andre johnson, and brandon marshall when all 3 of them went off. my opponent in both leagues scored the most points in a single week in both leagues against me in the playoffs, and i was done for the season due to shitty timing.

    hell one league i had drew brees, steven jax, frank gore, ryan grant, reggie wayne, jason witten, and nate kaeding, with sims-walker, hakeem nicks, meachem, and greg olsen also on the roster for off weeks and what not.

    at least, even in h2h baseball, you have a a full week’s worth of games, so one hot day won’t kill you.

  39. Wilsonian says:

    @Shack: I’m agreeing with Poon. Got an offer yesterday of Bay/Cain/Scherzer for Utley/Capps and I passed. That is a pretty decent offer (better than the pitchers you have a choice of), but it’s a keeper (and we do off season trades so he could have some value then), and like Poon said, if he comes back and is the old Utley, you get a free badass who could carry you to the promised land come playoff time.

  40. AL KOHOLIC says:

    @ThePoonTycoon: yeah,and i hate football playoffs,having studs on top teams that only play 1/2 of your week 17 game and you loose to a guy who,s out of the hunt team wants to get certain players big numbers,but i still love it

  41. Wilsonian says:

    @Baron Von Vulturewins: I like your combo of players there…I seem to be rocking the same quartet…

  42. AL KOHOLIC says:

    @Wilsonian: that is a nice offer though

  43. Wilsonian says:

    In a 16 Team H2H Keeper, would anyone drop Beckham (who has now lost PT to Brent Lillibridge?!?!?!) for Hammel, Hunter, Storen or League? I thought he had turned the corner, but I can’t have too much dead weight with him and Lind riding the pine.

  44. Eddy says:

    Hey Grey what’s up.

    Yesterday you said Montero will probably drop a line of 25/10/35/.300, but also said him and Wieters aren’t all that different.

    What would you say Wieters’ would look like?

    Everytime I’m about to get rid of him, my mind flashes back to his ridiculous September last year and I have to wonder if it’s only a matter of time before he gets on a ridiculous streak. Kennedy would be the guy I’d trade for Montero if I were to get rid of Wieters, and I’d probably pick up Wandy.

  45. Wilsonian says:

    @AL KOHOLIC: it was. I really considered it, but I took Grey’s advice and denied it. Partially because of what Poon said, it’s like a free trade later if he comes back in true Utley form. If not, I can still deal him in the off season for some good quality draft picks. But I was also using it to show Shack that was what I was offered and turned it down, and those guys are a helluva lot better than what he was looking at.

  46. Gip says:

    It looks like Tex is finally heating up. But in an H2H league where I am currently 11-2 I have been offered Halladay, Huff & Adrian Gonzalez for Tex, Jamie Garcia & Braun.
    Halladay would give me a stud on my staff behind Ubaldo. I also have Price, Buckholtz, Cueto, Sanchez. De La Rosa.
    Do I pull the trigger and hope AGonz will rev it back up? Or should I stand pat?

  47. AL KOHOLIC says:

    from here on in,wandy will probably be better than kennedy

  48. AL KOHOLIC says:

    @Wilsonian: yeah,his offer wasnt anything to really consider

  49. mr baseball says:

    JOINING A NEW LEAGUE RULES – my rules on joining new leagues

    these rules work well on yahoo

    1-Check to see if your Commissioner has a profile that shows he been running leagues for years – If he shows a new profile I would stay away from the league
    many end up joining leagues that the commisisoner locks out players for his own benifit

    2-Check to see if there are message board posting on the league message board – there should be at least a message from the commissioner welcome you to the league

    3-Make sure that the E-Mail is shown before joing up in the league

    4-Check profile of all players in league – if they for instance have a bunch of players have a profile rating of 31% there is a chance that that they will not stay active

    5-JOIN THE BEST LEAGUE – come on every advertisment is the same – how does the commisioner know its the best league – the season has not started

    6-Join a keeper league – come on how many players will end of retunring next year including the commisioner – You are better just drafting for this year

    This is my advise – The Mayan Calendar prdicts the end of the world on December 21, 2012 – if you look closely they also predict the end of your keeper league at the end of the first season

  50. Eddy says:

    Oh and, who’d win in this deal:

    Carlos Santana and Liriano

    Carpenter, Kennedy, and Fowler

  51. AL KOHOLIC says:

    i like santana,and if a keeper league no question

  52. Eddy says:

    Thanks, I’m trying to solidify my catcher spot, and I picked up Fowler on a whim as it is. And, well, we all know what Grey thinks about Kennedy.

  53. mr baseball says:

    @Grey – Matt LaPorta – LaPo hit another homer yesterday then was removed with a head bruise from his collision with Andrus. After the bump on the head, LaPorta thought he was Ginger from Gilligan’s Island.

    He thought he got hit in the head with a coconut and the trainer was the Profesor – Boog Powell played the skipper

  54. ThePoonTycoon says:

    @Gip: don’t do it, you’d be giving up 2 1st round bats, neither of whom have really hit their strides yet, with tex being renowned for hit 2nd half surges.

  55. Still hanging onto Aramis and that finger of his. Was hoping that the All Star break may provide the layoff necessary to rest it back to productivity. But the daily drama of that nagging nob is becoming too much to tolerate. Cub faithful have been brutal over his contract, lazyness, etc., etc., etc.! I now have Jose Lopez at 2B/SS (& am looking forward to a decent 2nd half/maybe a trade to Phili???) and although I like a 3B in that MI spot, am tempted to grab a Barmes, shift Lopez to 3B, and drop Aramis and his lazy thumb. Would this be advisable? Or just drop A-Ram/thumb and pick up a true 3B like Chipper, Walker, Blake, Kouz, Johnson, maybe Fox (PT?)? OR, presently being in decent standing league-wise, trust my draft day gamble and be patient a little while longer with the recuperation of that lateral-most digit? Thanks for the advice!

  56. Turd Ferguson says:

    Rest of season rank: Medlen, Pineiro, Dickey, Niese

    This week need a 2-starter: Livan v SD (Richard), v SF (Bumgarner) OR Pavano @ TOR (Litsch), @ DET (Oliver)

  57. Commish Cauda says:

    20-team, H2H-POINTS League

    Pick THREE to start this week:

    Leake @PHI (Blanton)
    Lilly @LAD (Bills)
    Pavano @TOR (Litch), @DET (Oliver)
    Cecil vsMIN (Baker)
    Masterson @TEX (Wilson), @TB (Niemann)
    Matusz @TEX(Feldman)

  58. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Eric: Ha

    @Howard: Thanks! It’s a fair trade sending Posey and Stanton for both. A donkeycorn and Medlen’s fine, assuming this isn’t a keeper.

    @Willie Norwood: Garza, if this is a 10 team league or shallower.

    @Howard: Ha

    @Derrick: Yup

    @barker: Eh

    @GregG: Ha!

    @AJ: He might have been hiding an injury earlier.

    @AL KOHOLIC: Thanks!

    @AL KOHOLIC: Nice

    @ThePoonTycoon: Yeah, very true.

    @Wiley: Are you trading Panda? Then sure…

    @big o: Eh, not sure how Pagan’s playing time will shake out once Beltran returns.

    @Mark Geoffriau: Sure, try it, but the other owner probably won’t do it.

    @bobbo: Morgan

    @Shack: What Poon said.

    @Ron Washington’s Stache: Matusz, I wouldn’t start Wakefield.

    @Baron Von Vulturewins: Ha… Yeah, lose Stanton.

    @Wilsonian: Sure, Hammel.

    @Eddy: Stop worrying about catchers. Lose Kennedy anyway, try Wandy.

    @Gip: I’d keep Tex and Braun.

    @mr baseball: Ha!

    @Eddy: Liriano side.

    @mr baseball: Ha

    @zombie: Hold for now.

    @Turd Ferguson: Medlen, Niese… Pavano…

    @Commish Cauda: Pavano, Cecil and Lilly…

  59. Turd Ferguson says:

    @Commish Cauda: I’d go Pavano and Lilly for sure, and use the last slot for either Cecil or Masterson, depending on how weighty the extra start is in your points league.

  60. mapwheel says:

    Jayson Nix’s parents–Willyam and Aylice Nix–must be very prouyd of him.

  61. Anyone have any interesting responses to owners who simply don’t respond to trade queries? Not the guy who makes an absurd counter-offer, or the guy who rejects a fair offer without stating why, but rather managers who simply don’t respond to the proposal or to follow-up e-mails.

    Do you “out” them on the league message board? Pester them one-sided trade offers made with a note “just to be a pain…”? Or just remember not to trade with them in the future? Anyone have any creative solutions?

  62. Baron Von Vulturewins

    Baron Von Vulturewins says:

    @Wilsonian: Yeah, had to basically rebuild my offense on the fly, given that my original OF of Grady, Lind, Borbon and Dunn (since traded for Kinsler) cacked out completely.

    I’m finally feeling good about this mix of cast-offs, retreads, has-beens and inglorious bastards. Suits my personality better.

    For those that missed the Krispie Express, get on the Delmon Young train, if you still can. The gentleman is blossoming.

  63. GopherDay says:

    Grey, Carlos Lee was just dropped in one of my leagues. I haven’t been keeping up with his problems because I never drafted him. Would you drop S-Rod, Tabata, or Fowler to pick him up?

  64. Commish Cauda says:

    20-team Contract League

    Trade a 2010 Furcal for a 2011 Adam LaRoche? Scutaro would then be my SS.

  65. TheEvilEmpire says:

    Hasz Matusz turned a corner or are we sztill sztaying away from him?

  66. TheEvilEmpire says:

    @Grey: Who do you prefer @ MI the rest of the way? I.Stew (my current 2B), Flopez, Barmes, Aviles, or N.Walker?

  67. Frank Rizzo says:

    Pete Gammons is reporting rumblings in Tampa about a potential 3 team trade that would get them Cliff Lee and send BJ Upton packing. It wouldn’t surprise me about BJ one bit. I’m guessing Tampa has had about enough of his act.

  68. Wilsonian says:

    @Baron Von Vulturewins: I drafted Quentin and went Steve’s route of dropping him/picking him back up, come to think of it, Krispie took the same route – pretty sure he’s been on my team three times now, and I think he’s here to stay. Santana joined my squad when V-Mart caught the clap. I picked up Floyd when he started pitching well and haven’t looked back. It’s sad that these guys are carrying me, but I’m ok with that. Makes me look like I’m a Fantasy God, but really no one knows my Razzball secret…

  69. Time Theft Bandit says:

    Is it still worth it buy low on aaron hill?

    Also, who wins in a trade of latos for heyward?

    Thanks Grey~

  70. Frank Rizzo says:

    @Mark Geoffriau: Don’t know who the 3rd team is……I can’t find it stated anywhere.

  71. ThePoonTycoon says:

    @Frank Rizzo: as a bj upton keeper league fantasy owner, i too hope he gets traded. at this point any kinda change of scenery couldn’t hurt, and it’d be nice to have the 2nd half to see if he and tampa just weren’t meant to be for whatever reason, or if he’s just gonna go the way of lastings milledge.

  72. @Frank Rizzo: I’m guessing this would lead to a call up of Desmond Jennings, no? Exciting stuff!

  73. ThePoonTycoon says:

    @Time Theft Bandit: i’d take heyward, if noly because i expect altos to come back to earth a little bit and if the pads fall out of contention (or even if they stay in) latos will at least have some starts skipped, if not outright shut down.

  74. @ Grey:

    need two solutions (5X5 Roto Non-keeper):

    1. Wieters or Napoli

    2. Have Utley, (I know you have covered quite a bit), but choices are:

    Kelly Johnson
    Polanco (in a few weeks)
    Sean Rodriguez

  75. Frank Rizzo says:

    This is the report I saw…..According to MLB Network’s Peter Gammons, there are rumblings in the St. Petersburg area that the Rays may go after Mariners lefty Cliff Lee.

    Add another team to the growing list. The Twins were linked to Lee on Monday night and may have even made a bid. The Cardinals, Mets, Yankees and Phillies are also expected to throw together packages for the 31-year-old, who has a 2.34 ERA, a 0.95 WHIP and an 89/6 K/BB ratio in 13 starts this season. Gammons hears that the Rays may involve outfielder B.J. Upton in their proposal and that a three-team exchange could be afoot.

  76. timSTi says:

    @Grey: Another boring MI/SS question. Which two of these guys would you want as SS & MI in a 10 teamer.

    Pennington, Sean-Rod (SS eligible), MMD, Alcides, EverCab, or FeLopez,

    Have Sean-Rod at SS and MMD at MI right now with Alcides on the bench. Stand pat or do you see something better?

  77. Grey – Keep Panda or Cantu for 3b?

  78. kwak says:

    Would you add Bumgarner over any of these schmohawks I’m carrying, deep 12-team keeper:

    Gio Gonzales
    John Ely
    John Niese
    Brett Cecil

  79. Black Beard says:

    7 keeper league, 5×6 (+OPS), ten team:

    Choo and Hanley for Braun, Jeter, and Jamie Garcia?

  80. Yankees2010 says:

    Hey Grey, I did the same thing with Garza. Started him all season, sat him last week while he dazzled the Sox, and then watched in horror last night as he proceeded to give it up to the younger Patterson. I feel like yanking that beard of his out sometimes.

    Nothing like managing myself out of contention!

  81. Grey — Who do you like more as a fifth starter over the medium term (20-team roto league, no keepers): Bumgarner or Gorzelanny?

    Depending on how lineups are shuffled after the all-star break, this looks like the schedule for each for the next four games:

    Bumgarner: @MIL (tonight) — @WAS — vs. NYM or @LAD — @ARI
    Gorzelanny: @LAD — vs. PHI or vs. HOU — vs. STL or @HOU — @COL

    On a similar note: best to sit Bumgarner against the Brew Crew, right?

  82. Adam says:

    Would you take a chance picking up Webb without an open DL spot if you had to drop a decent utility hitter? Reports predict he’ll get 6-8 starts… can I realistically expect anything better than a couple 5 IP no decisions?

  83. ThePoonTycoon says:

    @Adam: what kinda util guy here? we talking all-star omar infante?

  84. @Adam: If it’s a one-year league, I think it would have to be pretty deep and you’d have to be pretty desperate for pitching to grab Webb without a DL slot. But I’d be interested in knowing what Grey has to say.

    Staying in Arizona, Grey, do you think Demel is still worth holding onto to see what Kirk Gibson’s going to do in the unlikely event a save situation arises? Qualls is looking better, and I wonder if he’d put him back in the job if/when Heilman gets yanked.

  85. Dom says:

    Need trade help. 10 team, AL-Only, 4×4 Roto. I was offered Jon Rauch and Rajai Davis for Nelson Cruz. I’m last in saves and can make up the most points there. I think I’m giving up to much for save, but Rauch does have an attractive contract for next year

    My current line-up:
    C: Molina, Bengie & Posada, Jorge
    1B: LaPorta, Matt
    2B: Hill, Aaron
    3B: Beltre, Adrian
    SS:Gonzalez, Alex
    MI: Rodriguez, Sean
    CM: Fox, Jake
    O: Bautista, Jose, Cruz, Nelson, McDonald, Darnell, Nava, Daniel, Upton, B.J.
    DH: Frandsen, Kevin

    Buchholz, Clay, Downs, Scott, Gonzalez, Gio, Guerrier, MatT, Lester, Jon, Pettitte, Andy, Rowland-Smith, Ryan, Santana, Ervin, Simon, Alfredo SP BAL

    Reserves: Flowers, Tyler, Cabrera, Asdrubal, Encarnacion, Edwin, Rivera, Juan, Hellickson, Jeremy, Hochevar, Luke

  86. Grey

    Grey says:

    @jwgreen: Panda

    @kwak: Over Ely…

    @Black Beard: Braun side

    @Yankees2010: Yeah, very frustrating.

    @Enrique: Bumgarner, sit him.

    @Adam: I wouldn’t have drafted Webb or owned him this year.

    @Enrique: Sure, hold Demel for now. I think Qualls probably gets the nest look though.

  87. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Dom: Not crazy about that trade.

  88. poot says:

    Grey, do you think Coghlan will be the Marlins’ second baseman by opening day next year?

  89. vinko says:

    Need a replacement/plug in for Bucholz in my 13 team league (no bench) Available pitchers include Burnett v Oak, Moyer v Atl, Para v SF, Wells @LA, and Garcia v LAA?

  90. Lob Ball says:

    Do I remember correctly from last week that you are suggesting NOT going with Cahill against the Yankees tonight?

  91. GopherDay says:

    @Lob Ball: I only send top pitchers out against the Yankees. Cahill wouldn’t be a good play I don’t think.

  92. MeanMachine says:

    Just got offered Nolasco for Bedard and Vasquez. They were both waiver wire pickups. DLR and Volquez are available so i would basically be picking up one of those 2 to replace Bedard so it comes down to Nolasco vs Bedard. I have 4 friggin AL East pitchers so i am trying to cut that down. Any thoughts?

  93. mc serch says:

    Hey Grey! Nice work this morning, loved the Sheets/Bedard riff….so I’m pretty sure you would advise ag. starting Cahill tonight (in fact, apparently you have) but what about Wandy? Does the Wandwagon roll tonight? FWIW I also have Hamels going and i have lots of innings to make up…I’m like 50 innings under the pace

  94. Grey

    Grey says:

    @poot: Maybe

    @vinko: Burnett

    @Lob Ball: I wouldn’t start him.

    @MeanMachine: I’d take Nolasco.

    @mc serch: Thanks! I’d start Wandy.

  95. ThePoonTycoon says:

    @MeanMachine: vazquez is looking pretty solid right now. he could easily outpitch nolasco from here on out.

  96. Joel says:

    I like the Black Sheep remix reference.
