Wieters Washes Up On Chesapeake From Hype-o-Cane
Matt Wieters was finally called up by the Orioles. We know what you’re all thinking – how could they give up on Gregg Zaun so quickly? Don’t the Orioles brass have the intestinal fortitude to withstand the hype surrounding this ‘phenom’ when they’ve got the ultimate journeyman? Evidently not. So how has Wieters been spending his near two months in AAA detention? He’s been awesome…ly average. .285 average. 5 HRs. 30 Ks in 137 ABs. There’s little doubt that Wieters will be an excellent hitter for years to come (see his .350+ average b/w A and AA last year) but those AAA numbers are more likely what you’ll get from him in 2009. Think .285 with 12 HRs. He could prove us wrong and you can do worse than bet on hitting upside at Catcher. Just don’t overpay for it. Anyway, here’s what else we saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:
Jason Bartlett – Another day, another injury to a Rays middle infielder. Yesterday, it was Iwamura. Now Bartlett goes on the DL with a sprained ankle that he hurt while practicing his dismount from the statistical stratosphere (.373 AVG!). Reid Brignac, who has been hyped for a while, will replace him.
Jose Reyes - Has there ever been a top 5 pick whose owners were relieved when they went on the DL? Enter Reyes. What’s the use of Reyes if he has a bum leg (strained calf)? Let him get healthy so he can steal some damn bases.
Fernando Martinez – Was called up yesterday. Fernando Martinez is going to be a great one and he should be pursued in keeper leagues. But let’s turn over the post to frequent commenter, Mr. Baseball, for a second. He listed these names: Travis Snider, Cameron Maybin, Dexter Fowler, Matt LaPorta, Elvis Andrus and Matt Gamel. His point is fairly obvious. Rookie nookie starts out like a frollicking gazelle and ends like a dead gazelle. Martinez will hit one homer, slap some fans’ hands, and get sent down when the Church of Concussed Heads returns. He’s a decent flier, because you never know what he may do for a week or two, but don’t drop anyone too worthwhile.
David Wright – Has three homers, but stole his 11th base yesterday. Sympathy gains for Reyes?
Carlos Quentin – Now saying he’ll hopefully be back next Monday. Awesome! Maybe next week he can get in one at-bat and then miss another two weeks. Could someone conference call Quentin with Chipper to explain the merits of the DL?
Max Scherzer – 7 IP. Second straight 10 K game. Just as encouraging, he’s thrown only 2 BBs in those games. Owners enjoy the ride and keep your fingers crossed he stays healthy.
Melky Cabrera – Left the game with a sore shoulder after crashing into the outfield wall. In a home game, Melky’s jersey would’ve caught the jetstream and he’d be somewhere in the South Bronx right now.
Coco Crisp – Left game with a sore shoulder too. First you have Melky, now you have cereal. Melky… Cereal, baby. Melky… Cereal, baby. What, you don’t listen to LL?
Brett Gardner – In place of Melky, 3 steals. He ain’t taking no jive from no Western Union messenger!
Ryan Braun – Took a pitch from Adam Wainwright off his wrist. Looks like he’ll be day-to-day. Wainwright laughs manically and says, “You can call me, Painwrist.” The Brewers tried to retaliate on Albert Pujols and he lined a double with his bicep.
Hanley Ramirez – Came out of the game with a tweaked groin. Hanley was feeling a little less *pinkie to mouth* manly.
David Ortiz – Dropped to 6th in the order. Solace for Ortiz owners who have seen the chances of an 0-for-5 decrease slightly.
Joey Votto - Welcome to our brand new game… Is he hitting a home run or is he dizzy?
Roy Oswalt – 6 IP, 4 ER and only has three decisions on the year to bring his record to 1-2. Member those days when he’d win 20 games every year with crazy Win Karma? Yeah, someone else might too, trade him to that person.
Edwin Jackson – 6 1/3 IP, 2 ER. I told you to pick him up after his first start of the year. Cust kayin’.
Mark DeRosa – HR yesterday, 8 on the year. .260/22 HRs. What are DeRosa’s final numbers, Alex?
Zach Greinke – 9 IP, 1 ER, 8 Ks. We get it. We’ve changed Greinke’d to Pwnson’d in the glossary.
Joe Blanton – 11 Ks? Let me guess, the Marlins?
Livan Hernandez – Complete game win? Let me guess, the Nationals?
Brad Lidge – Got his 9th save in a sticky situation. Lidge is going to be given every opportunity to succeed, which means he may fail. But he’ll have the chances.
Shane Victorino – 4-for-5, he’s actually been a bit light on the steals this year, but who doesn’t love The Flying Hawaiian? Not me, friend.
Nolan Reimold – Now has 3 HRs in 46 ABs. Could be this month’s Travis Snider.
Gary Sheffield – Hit his 5th homer. I think he’s way too stubborn to play and not play well, but I also think he’s too old and broken down to stay healthy. Doesn’t hurt to take a flier, just don’t drop anyone too valuable.
Jayson Nix – 2 HRs yesterday. Whatever, can’t supplant Alexei now, sucka!
Nomar Garciaparra – Out again with a strained something-or-other. Someone picked him up in one of my ‘pert leagues and I swear to you, I laughed out loud.
Jesus Guzman – Optioned back to beautiful, bustling Fresno. This came just days after Bochy said he’d start over some schmohawk. Ah, fantasy baseball… When your loved ones don’t stress you out enough.
Ian Snell – Threw a complete game! Then again, it was rained out after 5 innings and he gave up 5 runs.
Troy Glaus – May not return this year. No kidding?
Nick Blackburn – 7 IP, 1 ER, 7 Ks. Usually no Ks, no WHIP, no thank you.
Mark Reynolds – Hit his 13th homer. Where ya at, Chris Davis? At 12, after yesterday’s 2 homer game. And at 61 and 67 Ks, respectively. This race is way too close to call.
Chad Qualls – Sat in favor of Juan Gutierrez in a clear save situation after giving up runs in 3 of his last 4 outings. We’re not reading into it, but in a way we are. Read into that!
Andrew Bailey – Got the save about three weeks (estimate) after he was called the closer. I’d own him, but it would sure be nice to see him again before the summer solstice. (No idea when this is, but it makes me sound smart when I say it. Though not as smart when I point out I don’t know when it is.)
Bobby Jenks – Out with the flu as Linebrink got the save. Can’t Matt Thornton blow his snot rockets at Bartolo Colon?
Bobby Abreu – Hit his 1st HR of the year. Guess he shouldn’t have participated in that Winter League Home Run Derby.

I’m a Reyes owner. Sans a back-up SS before Jose went down, I’m currently employing Barmes. Would Brignac be an improvement (i.e. Is he ever going to hit in the bigs)? Barmes is the only guy standing between me and Eckstein at this point, so needless to say I’m scraping the bottom of the barrel here.
May 27th, 2009 at 12:42 am
Travis Snider, Cameron Maybin, Dexter Fowler, Matt LaPorta, Elvis Andrus and Matt Gamel. Include Fernando Martinez. Of those names, who’s gonna have the biggest 2010?
May 27th, 2009 at 12:42 am
Oh include Colby Rasmus in the conversation too.
May 27th, 2009 at 2:34 am
Someone dropped Derrek Lee, should I pick him up and drop Gamel?
I’m also thinking of dropping Gamel for Kawakami depending on how his game goes tonight.
May 27th, 2009 at 3:25 am
NEWS ITEM
Nationals designated pitcher Daniel Cabrera for assignment tonight. Acting GM Mike Rizzo was frank: “I was tired of watching him.”
Aren’t we all Mr. Rizzo? Aren’t we all?
May 27th, 2009 at 4:00 am
dizzy votto strikes again, now bench him tonight he’s probably spinning from rounding all 4 bases….
I wish i could punch manny ramirez in the face. He’s killing Eithier. Literally as soon as Manny was suspended I should have just benched Eithier until July 3rd as well!
May 27th, 2009 at 4:59 am
Where does Wieters rank amoung catchers for the rest of the year? I picked him up as a FA in my league, dropping Cuddyer, but I already have Napoli.
@Sabs: Keep Barmes until there is a week stretch of away games and then go shopping. Hopefully there’s a little better out there than Brignac…
@Spaceman.Spiff: I’ll take Gamel for fantasy baseball purposes. The Brew Crew just needs to trade Corey Hart and put him in the OF.
@agarthered: Assuming you’re in a 10 or 12-team mixed league, feel free to drop a Gamel for a Kawakami. It’s rare to find 7+ K/game a guys in FA (hence, Grey’s love affair with Jorge De La Rosa) so you’ve got to grab them while you can. (Note: ‘Drop a Gamel’ sounds like a street boast in Israel stemming from someone spinning the best outcome with a dreidel (Gimel).
@Tony: Stay patient with Ethier but he’s been Andre Nethier (neither fast nor powerful) in his career w/o Manny. If you have a better OF in tow, replace.
@steamer: Given his upside, I’d say he’s the top of the 2nd tier (first tier = Mauer, V-Mart, McCann, Martin, Ianetta – if healthy). I’d prefer him over Soto and Napoli at this point…
May 27th, 2009 at 5:39 am
Anyone know why Qualls wasn’t used yesterday, other than general recent semi-ineffectiveness?
May 27th, 2009 at 5:52 am
@Scott: According to RotoWire:
“Qualls was unavailable to pitch on Tuesday night due to recent heavy use, the Arizona Republic reports.”
May 27th, 2009 at 5:53 am
Winter League Home Run Derby — nice. Please re-open the RazzStore so I can buy my Winter League Home Run Derby Champion t-shirt.
Here’s what I like about Weiters: He may be Braun ‘07. He may be Bruce ‘08. He may be somewhere in between. But drafting him in the 13th round, he only has to be as good as Molina/Napoli/Ianetta to be worth the pick — and that’s his floor, not his ceiling. If he goes .285/12/55 the rest of the year, I add that to my one-and-a-half-months of John Baker and I’m satisfied. But if he goes .320/22/70, then I’m really happy — and I’ve gotten 5th round McCann value. So with this installment of Xtreme Rookie Nookie, there’s much less risk than usual.
Here’s what I don’t like about Weiters: I drafted him in the 13th round. Instead of Zack Greinke. Greinke’d!
Speaking of, all us non-Greinke owners should remember to stop being bitter about missing out on him and simply enjoy the show. We are seeing one of the all-time great pitching seasons unfold — as in, Gooden in ‘86 great, or Pedro in ‘99 great, or Clemens — ah, forget that roided bullneck.
Since I already have a swelled head over the enshrinement of Pwnson’d in the glossary, I would also like to mention that I touted E-Jax in the comments the day before he was touted in the round-up.
*But Baron, you also told everyone to run out and add Izzy from the Rays before he helped blow a 7-run lead!*
No one is interested in what you have to say, random-sentence-between-two-asterisks.
May 27th, 2009 at 5:54 am
@ScoutAbout: Heavy use of what? Oxycontin?
May 27th, 2009 at 6:02 am
@grey The Melky getting blown out of the Bronx and Pujols hitting a double off his bicep was gold. Had me laughing out loud and getting looks at work.
Question. Do I start either Slowey vs Boston or Jimenez vs Dodgers tonight??
May 27th, 2009 at 6:02 am
Yesterday must have been a proud day for the Nix family… Three homers from momma and poppa Nix’s two boys, Jason and Laynce.
Wonder when the last time two brothers have hit 3 homers on the same day?
May 27th, 2009 at 6:08 am
drop Ziegler for Bailey yet?
May 27th, 2009 at 6:10 am
Who do you want for the rest of the season, Posada or Iannetta?
May 27th, 2009 at 6:13 am
@Matt: Iannetta.
@Wizo: Yes.
May 27th, 2009 at 6:22 am
Who are some pitchers i could get for oswalt. is liriano a good buy for him?
May 27th, 2009 at 6:28 am
@Scott: I think Iannetta is better, it is just frustrating how much he sits on the bench for Torrealba. Since Posada can DH, I assume he will play more. I suppose I am also still hungover from Iannetta’s dreadful start.
May 27th, 2009 at 6:32 am
Is Carlos Beltran and Chris Davis too much for David Wright?
3B has been my biggest problem this year with Davis struggling and I feel like I’m deep in OF (Mclouth, Markakis, Justin Upton, Brad Hawpe, Choo and Carlos Quentin would be my remaining OFs…play 4 of them with 3 OF 1 util)
Had this trade out for a couple of days, but Chris Davis I think is telling me to fuck off by hitting those 2 homers last night.
May 27th, 2009 at 6:33 am
@Matt: Yeah, that makes sense, but I just don’t trust Posada to really ever be healthy enough to stay off the DL.
May 27th, 2009 at 6:43 am
Are we expecting to see a bit more Gamel with Braun day-to-day?
May 27th, 2009 at 6:58 am
@ Grey
Kyle Davies was just dropped in my league… while i know he is no prize, he has looked very good this year aside from a couple rough starts, including one @ detroit.
Is he a good add for today, this time at home vs detroit? His BVP isn’t very enticing, but I really like how he has been pitching in his last 3 games. (19 ip, 12 h, 6 er, 15 k’s) Let me know what you think.
May 27th, 2009 at 7:04 am
Desperate for power and tired of waiting for Wright. I’ve resigned myself to the fact that he’ll finish with 14 homers because the clueless Mets had to design a 400-foot fence in leftfield at their joke of a new park. Would you offer Wright/Kemp/Jered Weaver for Phat Albert? I’m at my wit’s end with the guys on my team hitting .350 with 2 homers.
May 27th, 2009 at 7:04 am
Also, you gotta roll with Slowey at Boston today, right? I mean, if I played him at NYY and he passed that test, no sense sitting him today.
May 27th, 2009 at 7:06 am
@Eric H.: Too much. Wright should still bring close to first round talent on his own (not Albert straight up though).
May 27th, 2009 at 7:07 am
Fantasy Booster Pack Update:
Price – some boost.
Wieters – Celebrated his impending call up by going 4 for 4 yesterday. (Had to get his 2009 Minor League Avg. over .300 before leaving for the Show)
Hanson – 7 IP, 5 Hits, 1 ER, 2 BB, 9 K yesterday
May 27th, 2009 at 7:07 am
Question: Looking for pitching help this year but also ideally with an eye on keeping said pitcher at least one more season if possible. Mostly, though, need help this season. That’s my focus.
Who are the best two options of this bunch from say mid-June forward? ?
Available: J.A. Happ, Barry Zito, Dallas Braden, David Huff, Brett Anderson, Sean Gallagher, Rich Hill, Kenshin Kawakami (as opposed to Ralph Kawakami), Scott Olsen, Derrek Holland
Thanks.
May 27th, 2009 at 7:08 am
Mr. Baseball’s comments were astute – I think that I have gone through every one of the noted phenoms. I am a sucker for rooks with potential, and has Weepstake remorse last year with Kershaw and Mad Max. But there is always the possibility of having the next Ryan Braun, either of the Bash Brothers, or to go back a bit in time, Fred Lynn, who won ROY and MVP in his first year. And yeah, I will give Martinez a fling. But maybe Reinold is “the one”…?
Melky… Cereal, baby – Ha!
As for Big Floppy; apparently, Manley was his supplier. Not only did he take away his lineup protection, he left with his stash. Floppy is now challenging Sammy Sosa and Eric Gagne for the PPP (plummetting post-steroidal play) award.
@Baron Von Vulturewins: I’ll take the good and the bad. I have had Edwin Jackson in three leagues since the Grey-Baron posting, and I also got smacked around in three leagues with Izzy Stardust.
May 27th, 2009 at 7:11 am
@timSTi: i’m interested in starting slowey too….
He’s had good outtings vs. NYY, DET, and MIL recently… and DiceK is pitching on his first game back from the DL. So even if he gives up some runs I think he’s gonna get run support.
i have 19 of my 32 min innings in, i have slowey tonight, beckett and haren throwing tomm or soon…. decisions decisions….
May 27th, 2009 at 7:14 am
@Eric H.: I understand your pain, as I’m also experiencing a power outage from certain players compared to what I thought I was drafting (Rios, Hart, Peralta–I’m talkin’ to you, wish Kemp would get hot, etc.). But seriously, step away from the ledge. That would be way overpaying and I think you would regret it later. Besides even Pujols can’t carry an entire team.
May 27th, 2009 at 7:17 am
I don’t need Jered Weaver anymore and if Wright alone won’t fetch Phat Albert, why not throw in Kemp? My outfield would be Bruce/Pence/Werth with Pujols at 1B and Votto in the Util.
What about Wright/Weaver for A-Rod? I’ve had my fill of David Wright and his 400-foot “porch” in left.
May 27th, 2009 at 7:19 am
@Eric H.: That’s a better offer. Or try Wright/Weaver for Pujols.
May 27th, 2009 at 7:19 am
Grey….where did you get you data from the pitcher’s matchups post from yesterday? I ‘d love to be able to check more of that info out.
May 27th, 2009 at 7:20 am
Ryan Theriot cleared waivers. Do I drop Felipe Lopez?
Who do you like the rest of the year?
I’m guessing Riot: 55 R, 25 RBI, 15 SB .285 average
Felipe: 40R ??? 8HR 8 SB .300?
May 27th, 2009 at 7:28 am
LaPorta Shown La Puerta
May 27th, 2009 at 7:32 am
In Roto I just traded C Bills for Sizemore. I should have went C Lee but how bad is Sizemore in the future? Just a 15DL? Is he going to have half his numbers this year? Bleh I forgot to stop the trade.
May 27th, 2009 at 7:34 am
When Dusty Baker puts in Mike Abe Lincoln something bad always happens for the Reds – I say where is John Wilkes Booth when you need him

at this point in the season where can we turn to – the players with the most upside are the rookies coming to the majors – if we don’t take a shot on them then someone else will
May 27th, 2009 at 7:46 am
Carl Pavano’s numbers over the last 30:
37.2 ip, 3.58 era, 1.19 whip, 30 k
Anyone buying?
May 27th, 2009 at 7:48 am
@Maitland: chris davis’ power numbers are fine. he’ll give you the 35 homers you drafted him for, it’s just gonna be with a .250-.260 avg. think of him as a dunn/pena type.
May 27th, 2009 at 7:51 am
I just read that the Red Sox are interested in Frenchy as a backup outfielder as they do not believe Baldelli and Drew will get them through the year in the outfield.
I would think they have bigger fish to fry than backup outfielder.
May 27th, 2009 at 7:51 am
Would you drop Capps and pick up one of the following: Grabow, Cruz, Hanrahan, Wilson or Madson. Or, just wait and see with Capps.
May 27th, 2009 at 7:54 am
@Eric H.: save kemp for another trade. or a possible inury replacement (do we know for sure votto isn’t gonna be dizzy every couple days?). or trade one of your other guys for a piece and insert kemp into the lineup.
basically there are an infinite number of ways kemp can be useful for you as more than a “well i he would have sat the bench in the immediate future so i threw him in unnecessarily” way.
May 27th, 2009 at 7:58 am
@Mr. Rickey: definite no on hanrahan. depends on your situation. if there are that many closers/potential closers on the wire right now, i’d probably wait and see the final word on capps before i drop him. perhaps he’s back in a few days and grabow has no value, while someone else scooped capps from you.
May 27th, 2009 at 8:05 am
I currently play Kemp everyday. Would be crazy not to. But I have a power-poor infield of Wright (HATE), Tulowitzki/Zobrist, Pedroia (FAIL) and Votto, with an OF of Kemp/Pence/Bruce and Werth as my Util. I am desperate for power. Just ride it out and hope for the best? Or package a couple of these weaklings for an A-Rod or Pujols? I feel like I can’t wait much longer for David Wright. We say he’s going to get going but he’s got that 400 foot fence in left and I could just see him finishing with 12 homers. I absolutely hate my life right now.
May 27th, 2009 at 8:07 am
Do I trade Helton (my util) for Jorge Posada where my starting C is Pablo Sandoval and then flip Sandoval for Elijah Dukes or Felipe Lopez if I can? If so, would you rather have Dukes or Lopez?
May 27th, 2009 at 8:10 am
Who do you want from here on out for runs and average: Polanco or Sanchez?
May 27th, 2009 at 8:15 am
Good grief…..is Ryan Braun, Mr. Glass or what? Grey was damn right that Pujols would just get mad at a pitch to his wrist and follow it with a HR. Braun has to leave the game and is now day-to-day. I think his new nickname needs to be the Hebrew Hemorrhage.
May 27th, 2009 at 8:18 am
@Eric H.: i would shop wright, and try to make a 2-for-1 deal for an aroid or pooholes.
who would be your 3B fill in? i might target aroid unless you have someone worthwhile.
i’d see what kind of interest you could get in wright + pence (largely empty avg imo).
May 27th, 2009 at 8:22 am
How about Wright/Beckett for A-Rod? I kinda need Beckett’s Ks, but how do you guys feel about this one? I crave power and every additional day David Wright is on my roster just pisses me off. There’s a 64% chance I rob a bank at lunch today.
May 27th, 2009 at 8:23 am
** Jake Fox called up ***
May 27th, 2009 at 8:23 am
@Eric H.: david wright is batting .350 I dont know what people are freaking about. He’s gonna hit for power. Maybe not 35 HR’s worth, but he’ll get to 22-30.
I play H2H. I’m not worried. I’ll take his average and hits all day everyday and twice on sunday.
May 27th, 2009 at 8:25 am
Edwin Jackson or Jered Weaver?
May 27th, 2009 at 8:25 am
@ThePoonTycoon: are you saying ship wright and another guy for AROD? Or trade wright and get AROD plus another guy???
May 27th, 2009 at 8:27 am
Cubs call up Jake Fox….how good can he be?
May 27th, 2009 at 8:27 am
wow wright and Beckett for AROD? really…. Arod just got back from hip surgery. Sure he went 5-5 the other day. Is he worth selling a guy who’s batting .350 and a Solid SP for?
IMO no he’s not… am i the only one who feels this is drastic measures here, power or not? I’d find another way to fill the need. Why do you need to swap wright for arod? Keep Wright and swap someone else for a power bat….
maybe a 1B….
May 27th, 2009 at 8:30 am
Carlos Quentin no homeruns in May and you just got the feeling there will be no homeruns in June – what to do what to do and he doesn’t have a leg to stand on- Don’t Listen to the Voices in your head ! he still might hit another homerun this year and get his average up to .225 – but the answer is simple my friend – the best free agent avalible is Aaron Rowand
May 27th, 2009 at 8:30 am
@Tony:
Normally, I would say that is a ridiculous trade. But on second glance, I actually might consider that deal depending on the league. ARod and Tex may hit 40 in that band-box…. just at Bloody home games. Not saying i’d do, just saying i’d actually give it a lot of thought.
May 27th, 2009 at 8:30 am
I would be giving up Wright and Beckett for A-Rod.
If Wright finished with 22 homers, that’s just not enough for me. I need power and need it fast. I’ve got an entire lineup of Punch ‘n Judy .350 hitters with 2 homers. That Mark Reynolds has 10 more bombs than my No. 3 overall pick makes me sick to my stomach. I loathe the Mets. I’m in roto and simply won’t have a chance to win if I don’t make up ground in HRs and RBIs.
May 27th, 2009 at 8:31 am
@Tony: I wouldn’t give that much either….but if the guy hates Wright, and to read his messages he hates Wright, let him make the trade so he can stop hating.
He can see if the grass is greener with that purse carrying homo Arod.
May 27th, 2009 at 8:32 am
@Eric H.: Why did you pick Wright in the first place if you hate the Mets so much and can’t stand having Wright on your team. Trade him for anything. You’ll sleep better.
May 27th, 2009 at 8:33 am
@mgeoffriau:
Worth a flier.
He can be Nelson Cruz circa August-Sept 2008.
He just needs to play. But, he is OF eligible in Yahoo and will probably earn 1B.
May 27th, 2009 at 8:34 am
@Frank Rizzo: I didn’t realize the Mets built a new ballpark with the leftfield fence 430 feet from home plate. Shame on me.
May 27th, 2009 at 8:35 am
@Frank Rizzo:
If Arod hits 40 and Wright hits 22… He can wear a purse and a bedazzled dress to parties for all i care.
May 27th, 2009 at 8:36 am
OK, keeping in mind that I need homers:
Would you deal Wright for Ryan Howard and Joe Nathan?
May 27th, 2009 at 8:36 am
@Eric H: IMO trade Wright for Reynolds. You’ll get power AND stolen bases! Jeez, if you don’t like a player, don’t draft him. Just because other people are taking Wright at #3 doesn’t mean you couldn’t have drafted Miggy if you hate the Mets. You did this to yourself… now fix it or stop complaining. (Also, HR’s is one category. I’m sure the .350 avg is helping you out just as much as 5-6 more HR’s.)
May 27th, 2009 at 8:36 am
@Tony: i’m just offerring up opinions on his thoughts, though i can’t really fault someone if they think wright isn’t gonna hit for the power they thought they drafted and they believe aroid is gonna be typical aroid the rest of the year (plus the benefits of new yankee stadium). aroid has looked fine since his return, and it doesn’t appear that the hip surgery will have lingering effects this year…now that doesn’t mean he might now suffer a sudden hip injury, just saying it doesn’t look like something that’s gonna bother him day-to-day (kinda like pooholes elbow last year).
personally, i’d rather have aroid from this point forward than wright, but it’s close, hence why i wouldn’t throw in kemp.
May 27th, 2009 at 8:40 am
@Frank Rizzo:
hahahhahahahahahahha i can see AROD carrying madonnas purse, what a great mental pic…
so wright or arod straight up i’m seeing some agreeance you guys would rather have AROD?
and his purse…. LOL

FAT GUY SLUGGER ALERT!
Jake Fox was just called up from Iowa to join the Cubs tonight (on Jake Fox day at AAA Iowa, no less). He’s absolutely destroying the baseball, but much like Gamel, he has two left feet for hands… Worthy of a look if you need another fat corner infield hacker. http://bit.ly/11lwCp
May 27th, 2009 at 8:44 am
@Eric H.: If you need power, and have an adequate replacement at 3b for Wright, Howard and Nathan for Wright is a fantastic trade.
May 27th, 2009 at 8:47 am
@Eric H.: Agree with Frank. Take Howard and Nathan if you have someone you can slide into 3B. Also, who is your current 1B?
May 27th, 2009 at 8:47 am
if offered, does one trade away Russell Branyan to get Big Papi Ortiz?
what are the prospects of the big guy turning this season around?
May 27th, 2009 at 8:48 am
@Denys: Yes. The prospects of him turning it around are better than Branyan keeping up this charade. Go with the track record if you can suffer through the UTIL eligibility (he ain’t getting 1B).
May 27th, 2009 at 8:49 am
Should I drop Garrett Atkins for Jake Fox?
NB — I now intend to pose the following question at least once a day:
“Should I drop Garrett Atkins for [insert flavor of the day]?”
I figure this will provide a little outlet for my pent-up rage at the blight on baseball that is Garrett Atkins.
May 27th, 2009 at 8:53 am
wow i was trying to figure out if this one guy in my league reads RAZZBALL but he snags every single prospect the instant they’re announced…. But since its the head topic on ESPN MLB I am thinking thats where he figured out Jake Fox is coming up….
annoying. This guy snags everyone. I truly wonder if managing his fantasy team is his only job… if so he’s not winnning the league.
May 27th, 2009 at 8:54 am
Anyone else in Yahoo leagues notice Mark Reynolds just became 1b eligible today? Bonus!
May 27th, 2009 at 8:55 am
@Frank Rizzo: Yeah, I’d been tracking that…doesn’t help me too much at the moment but it’s a nice flexibility bonus.
May 27th, 2009 at 8:57 am
Wright is a top 5 guy! This talk is crazy talk.
Quietly dominant is Nelson Cruz. 24/12/32/9 with great ratio stats. My offense is stacked, and he’s 1st or 2nd in most stats.
I’m passing on Sheff and keeping Nick Johnson, and I feel good about it.
May 27th, 2009 at 8:59 am
@mgeoffriau: @Tony: Even thought I’m the guy who broke the news here, I get scooped by Hank in the RCL… Memo to myself: pick up players before you break news (or break wind).
May 27th, 2009 at 9:00 am
Which side do you like?
His Soto+A Hill for my Asdrubal + Cain
I lost Iannetta and now have Baker. Hill would be a back up assuming Phillips comes back OK.
I almost like Asdrubal more than Hill because my team needs the added Runs and SBs more than the power and Asdrubal has multiple eligibility.
Or am I better off just going with Cain for Soto straight up?
May 27th, 2009 at 9:02 am
I’m going to let someone else take Jake Fox. I’ve already got 2 Jake Fox’s on my roster. One’s named Mark Reynolds, the other is Chris Davis.
May 27th, 2009 at 9:02 am
Do you want to keep porcello in a keeper league or trade him while his value is darn high.
May 27th, 2009 at 9:02 am
@IowaCubs: Yeah I was shocked at that – A Cubbie no less!
May 27th, 2009 at 9:05 am
@Frank Rizzo: But, but, but, Fox only K’s about half as frequently as those two guys.
May 27th, 2009 at 9:07 am
@Frank Rizzo: i’d rather have reynolds at 3B, too many big sluggers at first, i guess its nice for flexibility tho, its not hurting ya at least haha….
@Ian: hill soto, hands down…. aaron hill right? or rich? haha…
May 27th, 2009 at 9:08 am
@albertalbert: I have to agree completely with albertalbert. Wright’s Y! rating for the year is 24. His rating for the last month is 12. His stats for the last month:
39/96 (around .400) 17RS 2HR 24RBI 9SB .508OBP .615SP. This makes him one of the hottest hitters in the league. This talk about trading Wright and Beckett for AROD is absolutely nuts.
May 27th, 2009 at 9:09 am
@naughtandcross: Fox facing Gallardo, Fox facing Peavy, Fox facing Cueto…..the gist is Fox transitioning to Major League pitching may be tough.
@Baron Von Vulturewins: *Hehe*
@Joe from Point Pleasant: Any time someone hit three homers and had an incompetent brother.
@Martin: I wouldn’t buy Liriano.
@Maitland: David has 12 homers, I’d want that more than Wright’s 11 steals and average in some leagues.
@Joe from Point Pleasant: I wouldn’t start Davies.
@mgeoffriau: I’d start Slowey.
@Jif & The Choosy Mothers: I’d go Happ and Holland, nice username, btw.
@Paulie Allnuts: Hehe
@Bristol: Sorted ESPN’s MLB stats.
@johnny: I’d want Lopez.
@Jareth Cutestory: Ha!
@Dumbmutt: That trade’s fine.
@GhostfacePrzybilla: Nope
@Swass: I don’t want Posada.
@bobbo: Sanchez
@Matt: Weaver
@IowaCubs: So, does he play?
@mgeoffriau: If Atkins is bothering you, lose him. Doubt Fox is your answer.
@Frank Rizzo: Nice
@bpasinko: I’d trade him.
May 27th, 2009 at 9:10 am
Braun is playing today, you owners can breathe now. Also Gamel starts at 3B over Hall.
May 27th, 2009 at 9:12 am
@Tony: Agreed Tony. Having Reynolds 1b eligible isn’t a huge bonus, but it does give me more options. I love having options….and I love playing matchups, sometimes a little too much.
May 27th, 2009 at 9:13 am
@naughtandcross: @Frank Rizzo: Keep in mind that Fox will not have 1B eligibility in either Yahoo or ESPN for a while. They have him listed as an OF, where I have tremendous fear as a Cubs fan that he might see time.
In AAA Iowa, I never once saw him closer than 6 feet in front of the warning track in right field. He can’t move back on balls, and apparently has a range of about 10 feet if he moves quickly. Something tells me this will be a quick assignment for the former catcher.
May 27th, 2009 at 9:15 am
@IowaCubs I hope this Fox kid figures out how to field a ground ball. I could use another power bat at CI over Old Man Helton.
May 27th, 2009 at 9:16 am
@mgeoffriau: Got to put the Hebrew Hemorrhage in the lineup because he’s too explosive not to. But my guess for a line today is maybe 1-4, 0 R, 0 RBI, 2 K’s….and he won’t play again until Saturday.
Hope I’m wrong.
May 27th, 2009 at 9:16 am
@Grey: Grey what was your thoughts on all the arod for wright deals?
I’m wondering, and from all those reply backs i can’t figure it out.
May 27th, 2009 at 9:17 am
@IowaCubs: Why hasn’t Fox been traded to an AL club? Sounds like a 1b/DH type in the AL to me.
May 27th, 2009 at 9:18 am
@Grey: My patience has dried up. I can’t watch someone else get Alexei from the FA pool especially considering his recent stats. Since I have 4 closers and its a shallow league (10team) I have no choice but to drop Downs. With Reyes & my 3B already suffering (A Ram down Lowell in) I need his spot filled for the next 2 weeks
May 27th, 2009 at 9:20 am
@Frank Rizzo: I can’t figure my lineup today….between C, 1B, 3B, CI, and UTIL, I have:
Soto, V Martinez, Gamel, Reynolds, Chipper, and Mike Jacobs.
Right now, Jacobs is the odd man out, but I’m fighting the temptation to sit Reynolds since he’s facing Peavy.
May 27th, 2009 at 9:21 am
@Nick: WTF? You don’t need to ask Grey that question. I’m in a 10 team league too but the Alexei owner refuses to sell low on him. How can he be on your wire? He’s a SS with talent in an explosive lineup.
You better have picked him up.
May 27th, 2009 at 9:24 am
@Frank Rizzo I missed Alexei on waivers in my 10 team league. I’m in 2nd place and 3rd place picked him up. We have standings priority. What sucks is the day before I was in 3rd and the other guy was in 2nd. I woulda gladly replaced Tulo with Alexei. SUNOVAWAIVERCLAIM!
May 27th, 2009 at 9:25 am
@mgeoffriau: Reynolds is 2 for 11 lifetime vs. Peavy, with 6 K’s. I’m sitting him but I have the luxury of inserting Casey Blake instead.
I don’t know who all those other guys are facing or where they’re playing but I’m probably sitting Reynolds. It’ll probably blow up in my face too.
May 27th, 2009 at 9:25 am
Gil Meche just got dropped in my league. Always been a big fan of the guy, and his K and BB numbers this season lead me to believe he’s going to improve.
Should I burn my #1 waiver to get him (dropping Joe Nelson), or risk letting him fall to someone else?
May 27th, 2009 at 9:26 am
@Nick: I would definitely drop Downs for Alexei, if that’s what you’re saying
May 27th, 2009 at 9:26 am
@timSTi: i did drop tulo for alexie in mine, hated doing it, but come on alexie has to do more…
which by the way, do we expect any kind of heating up from tulo? god he’s been the definition of suck….
May 27th, 2009 at 9:32 am
@Frank Rizzo: I wouldn’t sit Reynolds right now, he’s a streaky hitter and he’s red hot right now, gotta ride out his hot streak so it balances out his slumps.
May 27th, 2009 at 9:33 am
@Grey: Grey:
Do you think I can safely drop Baker or should I hang onto him for a little while just in case Weiters struggles early? Catchers are hard to trade in this league (1 catcher), so I probably can’t get much in return for him.
May 27th, 2009 at 9:34 am
Soto for Todd Helton and Fat Pablo, which side do you want?
May 27th, 2009 at 9:37 am
@I’m Keith Hernandez: You wouldn’t sit him for Casey Blake? Blake is hitting cleanup in the Dodger lineup right now and he’s in Coors field today. Reynolds may be hot but is he hotter at the moment than Blake? It’s pretty close.
May 27th, 2009 at 9:41 am
@Swass: Who else is being “traded” away to start Helton?
May 27th, 2009 at 9:42 am
@Frank Rizzo: Haha he’s picked up…probably just in time because another team in my league just grapped Hairston Jr. although he was probaly aiming for Alexei.
May 27th, 2009 at 9:45 am
Im willing to trade Greinke away, who should I try and get for him?
May 27th, 2009 at 9:46 am
I have quite the problem, in a keeper league. I have an outfield of Adam Jones, Ryan Braun, BJ Upton, Nick Markakis.
My infield consists of Morales, Asdrubal Cabrera, Chone Figgins, and Alexei Ramirez with my catcher now being Wieters.
On my bench sit Derrek Lee, Howie Kendrick and Chris Davis. I am fully aware my Infield needs to be better. I am more willing to part with Upton or Jones. My problem is, I dont know which young keeper Infielders I should be targeting, or trading those guys for.
Help???
May 27th, 2009 at 9:48 am
@jk: Somebody really good.
Seriously though, it’s tough to give advice without details. What’re your needs?
May 27th, 2009 at 9:48 am
@jk: Aim high. The way he’s pitching now, you should ask for first round talent. It may not work, but it’s reasonable to offer.
May 27th, 2009 at 9:51 am
@Scott: No one. I have Helton and he is my 2nd Util player. A-Ram on the DL, Lind on the Bench. Fat Pabs is my starting C. I’m banking on Pablo putting up the .300 line but not much else and Helton potentially falling off/getting hurt while buying way low on Geo.
May 27th, 2009 at 9:54 am
@Grey: I have my doubts that he gets more than a few starts, but sorta like the Gamel pickup, it’s better to err on the side of Fat guys who hit homeruns. I think he gets starts against lefthanders and platoon for the worst defensive platoon ever with Hoffpauir until Lee’s healthy.
May 27th, 2009 at 9:55 am
@jk: I have Greinke too except I want to hold him. Everyone is saying his value is never higher, and that’s true, except I don’t think he’ll regress that much really. I’d rather keep him, unless someone offers me Pujols or something.
May 27th, 2009 at 9:56 am
One trade question:
Which side do you want… Adrian Gonzalez and Adam Wainwright for Miggy Cabrera?
May 27th, 2009 at 9:58 am
@Frank Rizzo: I have a feeling that the Cubs are auditioning him for an AL club to be a DH.
May 27th, 2009 at 9:59 am
@IowaCubs: M-Cab, for sure. Wainwrights are replaceable and pitching isn’t as consistent as offense.
May 27th, 2009 at 10:00 am
@IowaCubs: Cabrera.
@Swass: Sounds like a good situation to try. Good luck.
May 27th, 2009 at 10:00 am
@IowaCubs: Is Miggy 3b eligible in your league.
I’d do it but I’m a Miggy lov-a. Miggy will heat up and more power numbers will come. Doesn’t A-Gonz typically start hot and plain out?
May 27th, 2009 at 10:03 am
@IowaCubs: If I need a pitcher I’ll take Wainwright in one year leagues
May 27th, 2009 at 10:05 am
@IowaCubs: Hope the Cubs don’t go after Penny for Fox with the Red Sox.
May 27th, 2009 at 10:06 am
Wright/Hawpe or Adam Jones/Youkilis?
May 27th, 2009 at 10:10 am
@Crafty35a: Gimme Jones/Youkilis please.
May 27th, 2009 at 10:13 am
@Crafty35a: Wright is the elite player, that side wins… i wouldn’t want to bank on YOUK staying hot and the same from a-jones?
May 27th, 2009 at 10:15 am
@Frank Rizzo: that sounds great
May 27th, 2009 at 10:16 am
Someone in my league just dropped Furcal. Do you drop either JJ Hardy or Stephen Drew for him?
May 27th, 2009 at 10:16 am
@Tony: Sometimes it pays to look to the future instead of the past Tony. Youk is a grinder and I don’t see all that many dips in his play as long as he’s healthy. A-Jones may be a top 5 OF in drafts next year. 5 tool stud.
Meanwhile look at who Wright is playing with on his team. Are the pitches he see’s going to get any better? And look at his new home stadium……Metco.
May 27th, 2009 at 10:18 am
@AL KOHOLIC: What sounds great? I didn’t hear anything.
May 27th, 2009 at 10:21 am
@Frank Rizzo: sorry replieing to the comment of fox traded to the red sox.just wishfull thinking but
May 27th, 2009 at 10:22 am
@AL KOHOLIC: Are you a Sox fan or a Cubs fan? Do you want Penny or want to get something for Penny? Penny is expendable for the Sawx.
May 27th, 2009 at 10:24 am
Grey: Thanks for giving me the thumbs up to trade Weaver & Bell for Rollins – so far so good – feeling good about the future…
I have a little extra offense, and am a little short on pitching (Gallardo-Harden- 3 donkeycorns and Morrow)
So what are King Felix and Verlander worth? Which one’s better (guessing Verlander, but interested in your take)?
Would you trade Reynolds away for either?
Would you package up Rios & Theriot for either?
Would you even consider trading Nelson Cruz away for either?
Let me know!
Bermuda Triangles
Get Lost! <— team motto, not insult
May 27th, 2009 at 10:31 am
I traded Alexei for bartlett in a league where I needed stolen bases and avg. What do you think Alexei’s final numbers will be and was it a fair trade?
May 27th, 2009 at 10:34 am
@Frank Rizzo: neither,just grabbed fox and would like to see him get some playing time,lou wont make a commitment to him im sure
@Tony: I don’t think Wright’s any less a player than he’s been. He usually explodes for a few months at a time with power. Those months just haven’t come yet.
@Hardcore Midget: Drop Nelson for him.
@willclarkismyhero: Drop Baker.
@jk: Any top 3 round hitter. Whichever one fits best on your team.
@Suck My Wieters: Lee, Davis, Kendrick for Votto?
@IowaCubs: Yeah, that’s what I thought too.
@bobbo: I’d lose Hardy for him.
@BermudaTriangles: You’re welcome. I’d trade Reynolds or Cruz for F-Her or Verlander, in that order.
@Anthony G: Alexei’s projections are about 17/20.
May 27th, 2009 at 10:37 am
Wright was pretty slow out of the gate last year too.
May 27th, 2009 at 10:46 am
@Frank Rizzo: you’re never going to convince me Youk is better than wright, grinder of cheese? He’s already been hurt once this year. Besides last year he’s shown to slump in the second half, now is last year how its going to be moving to the future or is the couple years before the real YOUK? I dont know… but i do know david wright will hit… Maybe his new park is affecting him, and beltran and delgado being dinged up does not help, but i’ll take him hands down over Youk….
May 27th, 2009 at 10:47 am
reyes being down too hurts, i forgot him, and i still take wright….
he’s gonna steal 20+
May 27th, 2009 at 10:57 am
@Tony: cant cry with being stuck with either of them,wright does seem to start out slow and end up at .300-30-120-20,even though i dont really like him,i would take him
May 27th, 2009 at 11:02 am
@Suck My Wieters: That’s a pretty incredible OF for a keeper league, but if I had to trade any of them for infielders, I would try to package Markakis and a lesser player for Wright. D-Wright has clearly lost some value with Shiti-Field. I agree with Grey in regards to trying to get Votto. Adam Jones for Votto seems like a fair shake, but it would be tough for both sides to trade huge potential for huge potential.
May 27th, 2009 at 11:09 am
The Fox vs. the Gam(z)elle?
May 27th, 2009 at 11:15 am
what are the chances that Capps ends up on the DL for a while?
May 27th, 2009 at 11:17 am
Fox not in the lineup today of course. Everyone get your Andres Blanco hats on though!
May 27th, 2009 at 11:19 am
@Grey Nick Johnson was just dropped in my 10 teamer. Is he better than Helton for the longhaul at CI? Pujols at 1b and Arod at 3b Helton at CI.
May 27th, 2009 at 11:20 am
Gamel is doing everything in his power to get sent back down.
May 27th, 2009 at 11:23 am
Which side do you like in a keeper: Votto/Utley or Berkman/Sabathia?
May 27th, 2009 at 11:26 am
@Frank Rizzo: Blake is sitting today, get Reynolds back in your lineup.
May 27th, 2009 at 11:26 am
@Swass: Against a lefty, no less. Looks like Lou has his Corona and a Whopper even in the morning.
I’ll put my Andres Blanco hat right next to my Freddie Bynum hat.
May 27th, 2009 at 11:27 am
@bobbo: Votto/Utley. I always like young hitters.
@Zebo: Should avoid DL.
@bobbo: It’s an even trade. Depends what you need. I’d prefer Utley.
May 27th, 2009 at 11:30 am
rank these guys: fox, gamel, reimold, wieters, that guy that mets brought up
@Zebo: Wieters, Gamel, Reimold, Fox, Fernando Martinez.
May 27th, 2009 at 11:35 am
@Grey: Thanks for the analysis. We keep 5 batters and 3 pitchers and I am stacked with Lincecum, Sabathia, Peavy, and C-Bills.
I’m in the top 3 of all the offensive categories right now but am hurting in pitching thanks to some bad decisions with Liriano, Slowey, Myers, and middle relievers. Do you get rid of one of these top pitchers now knowing that you can’t keep them all, or wait until later in the year since I have a good shot of winning THIS year?
@bobbo: Wait until later in the year.
May 27th, 2009 at 11:39 am
how’s Lowell for Jurrjens?…i still have mini-Donkey while I wait on ArRam to return
May 27th, 2009 at 11:40 am
@bobbo: Yeah, 0 for last 14 isn’t too good. But, he just missed a 2 run homer in his first at-bat today.
Before the recent Brewer injuries, I was smelling a trade brewing with their recent moves in an effort to keep him up. Now? Not so sure.
May 27th, 2009 at 11:42 am
“@Maitland: David has 12 homers, I’d want that more than Wright’s 11 steals and average in some leagues. ”
Well, Davis has single handedly lost me a couple of weeks, so I’m kind of coming at it from that angle. I have Alexei at 2b and Davis at 3b and I feel like the rest of my offense in that league has been solid. So, am mainly trying to think about how I could upgrade 3b.
Wright’s steals would mainly be an afterthought. I kind of saw it as, Wright will be a better version of Beltran the rest of the way, even if the gap isn’t huge between Wright/Beltran. Then, I would slide one of my bench players that has been better than Davis into UTIL.
May 27th, 2009 at 11:42 am
@mgeoffriau: I saw that….thanks. Now I’ve got a decision to make. Reynolds vs Peavy or Chris Davis vs Burnett. Pick your poison. Who do you start?
May 27th, 2009 at 11:43 am
Pick up Rich Hill for Kelvim Escobar?
May 27th, 2009 at 11:46 am
Argh, can we cut bait on Parra yet? He has zero control. He’s had a year and change to work on this
May 27th, 2009 at 11:47 am
So far, sadly, I’ve been right about Braun. 0-3.
May 27th, 2009 at 11:48 am
@Frank Rizzo: for now, I still have Lowell, so i’m sliding him in there and benching Mr. Reynolds…but I would probably do Davis since Burnett has been a bit more hr prone this year
May 27th, 2009 at 11:48 am
@cubbies299: Yes.
@john: That’s fair.
@cubbies299: Sure, grab Hill.
May 27th, 2009 at 11:50 am
@Frank Rizzo: After last night, I’d take Davis since Burnett’s been spotty. Plus, he hits better against righties and at home. Still, seems like a coinflip with a 30% chance or success.
May 27th, 2009 at 11:50 am
Eithier and Kemp batting 6th and 7th with mark loretta, orlando hudson, and loney batting 3/4/5…. just disgusts me. I know Eithier’s been crap since manny’s been gone, but come on… kemp is batting .290, does torre really just not like him that much or what?
disgusteddddd
May 27th, 2009 at 11:51 am
@Frank Rizzo: I think you go with Davis against Burnett. Burnett’s an average pitcher who sometimes looks great, but most times does not. Peavy is a legit tough matchup.
May 27th, 2009 at 11:51 am
@Mark Bellhorn’s Knee Socks: Would you even recommend trading any of them? The way I’ve always looked a things: Grab great infielders, piece together the OF and Util. In my first keeper, I went with best players available. That just so happened to be OF’s. I figued, those guys are all suppose to be big run producers, yet have done much lately. Can I be successful with this team?
May 27th, 2009 at 11:53 am
@SRM: Gamel 0-3. I think he turns into LaPorta 2.0
May 27th, 2009 at 11:59 am
Can anyone (..is anyone willing to) talk me into starting Jimenez tonight against the Dodgers?..
May 27th, 2009 at 12:01 pm
@Suck My Wieters: You can be successful if you have the right infield. Part of that was probably picking up the hot infield hitters like Hudson, Hill, Helton. Then again, it looked like you were sitting on Chris Davis who “should” come around, even though he’s been a big waste thus far. The OF is stacked, if you want more balance, you should trade one of your OF. Chances are, most of the very good infield players will be kept depending on your keeper rules, and you might be left scrambling again for a better infield next year.
May 27th, 2009 at 12:03 pm
@john: I am now after seeing the lineup they are trotting out there.
May 27th, 2009 at 12:04 pm
@Frank Rizzo: Wouldn’t count on Blake today.
“Despite going 7-for-16 in his last three games, Blake will be given the day off Wednesday, the Dodgers’ official site reports.”
Gotta love Joe Torre. Sit your hottest hitter at Coors Field, bat one of your best young hitters 7th.
May 27th, 2009 at 12:05 pm
@john: You’ve got huge nuggets if you start him john. He’s faced LA twice this year and they’ve bombed him both times. Blake is out of the lineup which might help but the rest of those guys all have pretty good history against Ubaldo too. Plus Ubaldo’s day/night splits blow. 7.07 ERA in 3 day starts so far this year.
May 27th, 2009 at 12:06 pm
Looks like Theriot’s poke it out there again as opposed to trying to hit it out of the park. He’s happy to be back at Wrigley going 2-2 so far today.
May 27th, 2009 at 12:10 pm
@Frank Rizzo: Yea, LA has been his only failures this year really…but its just so tempting with lineup…alas, I’m gonna bench him because I can handle a pitching Sonavabench but would kick myself if I started him and he blew up
May 27th, 2009 at 12:11 pm
@Frank Rizzo: Small sample size. Day ERA in ‘08 was 3.41 compared to 4.22 at night. Day ERA in ‘07 was 2.89 compared to 4.69 at night.
May 27th, 2009 at 12:12 pm
@Scott: Thanks for trying…good luck with his start
May 27th, 2009 at 12:14 pm
@john: Oh, I don’t have him. I would never own a Rockies pitcher. I am a Dodger fan and hope this lineup crashes and burns in Torre’s face.
May 27th, 2009 at 12:15 pm
@Scott: Good call. Didn’t look at previous years. Just 2009 so far. Still would be a dangerous start.
lol and a wtf at Torre batting Loretta 2nd today.
May 27th, 2009 at 12:16 pm
Adam Jones or Joey Votto in a keeper league with the added categories of OBP, 2b, 3b
May 27th, 2009 at 12:17 pm
@Scott: LOL, oh..well the odds are probably in your favor
May 27th, 2009 at 12:18 pm
@Frank Rizzo: Hudson 3rd is just as maddening. He loves giving Kershaw nothing to work with on the road, where he struggles.
@Swass: Votto
May 27th, 2009 at 12:24 pm
ugh…..braun 0-4 on the day. DL stint coming for his wrist?
May 27th, 2009 at 12:25 pm
@Frank Rizzo: Sure hope not, my team is already going bad. I need to to start driving in runs, 2 RBI’s in his last 10 games is brutal.
May 27th, 2009 at 12:27 pm
Could Tulowitzki ground in to more double plays? Christ. Fowler needs to run on the first pitch so this can stop happening. This is like 2-3 already this week. Why isn’t Fowler running anymore dammit??
May 27th, 2009 at 12:29 pm
josh anderson leading off for the tiggers, 10th sb, worth consideration? almost batting .300
i didn’t check how many ab’s he has
May 27th, 2009 at 12:31 pm
@Tony: He’s not in the lineup enough to warrant a pickup imo Tony.
Crapolanco is the pickup of the day. His HR today marks the beginning of a major power surge…..at least 20 more to come this year.
May 27th, 2009 at 12:32 pm
Grey: please clarify… you want King Felix over Justin Verlander? Why?
Is it Verlander’s bad year last year? Is it team strength? Division?
School me please.

May 27th, 2009 at 12:32 pm
@Tony: Not playing everyday. Not worth a shot.
@Colin: I know, very frustrating. Even if you don’t own Tulo, he’s hurting you.
May 27th, 2009 at 12:36 pm
Sparky is upsetting me with this slump..he needs to snap out of it and quickly
May 27th, 2009 at 12:37 pm
^Sparky=Sparkakis=Markakis…just in case
May 27th, 2009 at 12:42 pm
Eithier and Kemp both 1-1
Why the guy i’m playing H2H is throwing both Kershaw and Jimenez I do not know! But Ubaldo’s got 2 on him already, lets even things up rockies! I could use some help from YOU tulo!
May 27th, 2009 at 12:48 pm
@Grey Nick Johnson was just dropped in my 10 team. Is he worth dropping Helton for at CI for the long haul?l
@timSTi: Nope
May 27th, 2009 at 12:53 pm
@Grey: #191 (you might have missed it)
Please give me a few words on why Felix Hernandez over Verlander…
Thanks!
Bermuda Triangles
Get Lost! <— team motto, not insult
@BermudaTriangles: Cause F-Her hasn’t had a season over a 4.00 ERA in three years. Bit safer.
May 27th, 2009 at 1:10 pm
Holliday for Rios? who do you want….
May 27th, 2009 at 1:12 pm
Zambrano just got ejected and went insane.
May 27th, 2009 at 1:15 pm
12-team ML 5×5 … Would you trade Beckett/Weaver/Lowe to get Peavy?
I’m leaning toward YES. My rotation would be: Peavy, Vazquez, Harden, Liriano, Slowey with maybe a little Kawakami sprinkled in.
I feel like an all-NL 1-2-3 of Peavy-Vazquez-Harden would be dynamite, especially if Harden starts throwing again shortly.
May 27th, 2009 at 1:18 pm
HOLY TOLEDO! someone call 911 Eithier and Kemp are BOTH 2-2….
@Tony: Holliday, barely.
@Eric H.: Beckett and Weaver should be enough.
@Tony: Hehe
May 27th, 2009 at 1:27 pm
ooh, bad win karma is coming to get Halladay.
May 27th, 2009 at 1:30 pm
@Dingo: word all tied up…. there goes his win, and he’s owned by the nazi of my league, loving it…
May 27th, 2009 at 1:34 pm
@Tony: Somebody needs to call Torre and tell him to move these guys up in the lineup. But no, he’d rather bat Loretta 2nd who’s 0-2 so far grounding into a DP at one point.
May 27th, 2009 at 1:35 pm
@Doc: zambrano ejected,but he was already nuts,beat up the gatoraide despenser again,better than his catcher like last time
May 27th, 2009 at 1:36 pm
Honestly, in what other MLB lineup would Matt Kemp be batting 7th in?
May 27th, 2009 at 1:47 pm
Jake Fox pinch hit RBI double
May 27th, 2009 at 1:47 pm
@Frank Rizzo: Boston is the only team I could maybe see that.
May 27th, 2009 at 1:49 pm
should i start zimmerman at the mets today
May 27th, 2009 at 1:49 pm
@timSTi: But even then people would be angry he was still hitting behind Ortiz.
@Frank Rizzo: He shouldn’t even be hitting 7th for the Dodgers.
@Martin: I would.
May 27th, 2009 at 1:58 pm
Hey Grey, here’s a scenario: Beckett and Stewart are falling off a bridge. Nearby, Victorino and Bailey are falling off of another bridge. You’re Superman, and you can only save one pair.
Who would you save, and who would you let die?
(OK, so I got tired of saying “Hey Grey, what do you think of this trade?)
May 27th, 2009 at 1:59 pm
Lets go Blake.
May 27th, 2009 at 2:00 pm
Yeah, back to the bench.
@Tom: Now that is an intersting way of putting it. I like!
May 27th, 2009 at 2:03 pm
@Tom: Creative, Tom. I like it.
I’m not so creative.
Scutaro or F-Lop? Konerko or Sandoval?
Thanks!
@Tom: Ha… I’d save Victorino, but I could see saving either side depending on need.
@Prince: Lopez and Sandoval if eligible at catcher and you’re using him there, if not then Konerko.
May 27th, 2009 at 2:09 pm
@Tom: Pre-crisis or post-crisis Superman?
May 27th, 2009 at 2:17 pm
@Grey While we are on the Sandoval subject, I picked him up in the interim while I hoped Soto heated up. Someone just dropped Iannetta and I put in a waiver claim on him. Once he gets off the DL I only waNa hold onto 2 at most unless Soto turns it on.
Assuming they all stay on the same beaten path who would you hold on to?
@timSTi: Iannetta, unless Soto’s somehow figured his shizz out.
May 27th, 2009 at 2:20 pm
Downs comes in to the 8th and Wolfe is now in for the 11th?
Reimold!!!!!!!!!
May 27th, 2009 at 2:22 pm
russell martin is about as yawnstipating as they come. is it friday yet?
May 27th, 2009 at 2:28 pm
@daniel p: Oddly, Martin just got dropped in my 12 team mixed league….I was stunned. I’ve got Soto (and V Mart playing at 1B), but I’m going to try to pick him up anyway.
May 27th, 2009 at 2:33 pm
drop cuddyer for reimold?
May 27th, 2009 at 2:39 pm
@Grey: Speaking of Superman, Ludwick comes back Friday!
May 27th, 2009 at 2:42 pm
Dear Manny & Randy,
Thank you, you dumbass washed up jackasses.
Sincerely,
Ubaldo
@Zebo: I’d prefer Reimold.
@BigFatHippo: I know, not thrilled. People in front of me in standings own him. BTW, have you seen the RCL standings? What’s up with the Original Recipe? Even the top team is buried overall.
May 27th, 2009 at 2:52 pm
Grey,
I’ve got 7 outfielders (Kemp, Ellsbury, Bruce, Werth, Cruz, Guerrero, Pierre) on a roster with 4 OF spots, 1 UTIL and 4 bench spots. I’m pulling away fast in SB and slowly catching up to the lead pack in runs. My team is last in average, but tops in Ks, S, and about middle of the pack for every other category.
I’d like to maximize value for my talent, and not have good hitters on the bench. Unfortunately, it’s hard to upgrade at any of my positions. One guy I’ve been looking at is Lincecum, held by an owner who needs OFs and is currently underperforming (slightly).
Is it too much to offer Bruce, Ellsbury and Beckett for him?
May 27th, 2009 at 2:58 pm
Any love for Porcello? Fausto ‘07?
May 27th, 2009 at 3:08 pm
Whats the better package:
Ryan Howard for David Wright
Or
Adam Jones and Alexei Ramirez for David Wright
@Joel: I’d offer Ellsbury and Vlad and see if that gets it done.
@JR: Sure, ride Porcello while he’s doing well. But I’m not sure how long he’ll keep it up.
@Suck My Wieters: Depends what you can afford to lose. I’d prefer to lose Jones and Alexei, if I had suitable replacements.
May 27th, 2009 at 3:14 pm
Also,
BJ Upton for Ryan Howard
Who gets the better end of the trade.
OBP 2B 3B and BB added categories.
May 27th, 2009 at 3:15 pm
big Z blew up, got ejected, and made the “you’re ejected” gesture at the umpire. classic.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Q0okH7c_lE
@Suck My Wieters: Howard
@jsp2014: Ha, nice.
May 27th, 2009 at 3:20 pm
@Grey: Grey, I forgot to tell you that 2B 3B OBP and BB are added to the league. They were 2 separate trades for Howard. What trade is the better trade?
Sorry for the confusion.
May 27th, 2009 at 3:22 pm
Grey,
leaving out more information….
It is also a keeper league, for both trades I asked you about.
@Suck My Wieters: I’d be more inclined to lose Howard for Wright rather Jones/Ramirez and would still want Howard in the Upton one, but it’s real close on all of them. Depends on your team’s needs.
May 27th, 2009 at 3:30 pm
its kind of funny too watch Lou try to calm him down – how about a Lou meltdown – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7VO8MAnS4tM&feature=related
@Mr Baseball: Anyone have the video to Z’s entire meltdown today?
May 27th, 2009 at 3:43 pm
Neither Qualls nor Pena were available cuz both had pitched like 5 times in the last week and had shown some ineffectiveness (perhaps due to fatigue)
May 27th, 2009 at 3:48 pm
Is it possible Derrek Lee can still hit .390 20 HR 80+ RBI?
May 27th, 2009 at 3:51 pm
Luke Scott is back from the DL, and he hit a HR off Doc in his first at-bat. Sonavabench!
The Jays feasted on LHP (my poor Rich Hill!) and lost the game against a RHP (Baez). All is in order then.
May 27th, 2009 at 4:01 pm
Can someone please kick Tulowitzki in the ass.
May 27th, 2009 at 4:04 pm
MLB.com has Zambrano’s meltdown:
http://mlb.mlb.com/media/video.jsp?content_id=4756801
@papasmurf: Ah, makes sense.
@Suck My Wieters: Maybe those power numbers, but .290 would be a stretch.
@Colin: Done.
@Joel: Thanks!
May 27th, 2009 at 4:14 pm
@Joel: Thanks, Joel! That video was great. I love how players slowly moved away from the Gatorade machine. Except Dempster, who just gazed on cooly. The coolest I’ve ever seen the wrist twitcher act! Also loved Z’s well reasoned rhetoric (if I read hips lips correctly): “No! You are out! You!”
Morgan looked out to me, IMHO.
May 27th, 2009 at 4:15 pm
@Grey: Typo, meant to say .290, there should be an edit button!
May 27th, 2009 at 4:37 pm
What are expectations for Sherrill, Pavano, and Washburn the rest of the way. Will they be able to maintain the levels of performance they’ve displayed thus far?
@Suck My Wieters: Yeah, figured that.
@Drev: Washburn and Pavano — no, they’re matchup pitchers. Sherril’s a cheap closer.
May 27th, 2009 at 5:13 pm
What do you think about Edwin Encarnacion once he gets off of the DL?
May 27th, 2009 at 5:14 pm
I just picked up Carl Pavano, but mainly only as a test to see which of my friends sends me the “what the fuck are you doing?” text first.
May 27th, 2009 at 5:17 pm
@Maitland: haha, nice
@Grey: John Baker or Kurt Suzuki?
May 27th, 2009 at 5:19 pm
Hideki Matsui, Swisher, or Burrell?
@Maitland: Ha! Edwin’s capable of good power numbers when he comes off the DL, and poor average.
@Drev: Baker
@cubbies299: Swisher
May 27th, 2009 at 5:38 pm
Bruce with 2 hits, both of them homeruns, and he actually hit one of them with somebody on base!!!! BRUUUUUUUUCE!
May 27th, 2009 at 5:46 pm
would you try to buy Quentin now or wait until there’s further news? was thinking of offering Corey Hart.
@mgeoffriau: NIIIIICE!
@Schlitzy: I’d try to buy him.
May 27th, 2009 at 6:34 pm
@mgeoffriau: 1/3 of SONAVABENCH!- Bruce active in two leagues, inactive in one.
@Maitland: Any Metropolitan fan who observed Pavano’s antics the last several years would give you a quick WTF? However, if a ‘pert in Grey’s league can pick up No-More, then it is hard to criticize anyone for doing anything. I suppose that Grey will keep that bozo’s name anonymous, but wouldn’t you love to know who made that move? But perhaps it was a 32 team league…
May 27th, 2009 at 6:41 pm
Alright this is nothing to do with fnatasy (except for those Santan owners with a vested interest in getting the win) but I had to put it on the record somewhere. Jerry Manuel removing the righty Parnell (who looks nasty) to pitch to Dunn (who has smashed the left-handed Santana once 450+ feet and once 378 feet tonight) with the lefty Feliciano, is a bad idea.
May 27th, 2009 at 6:42 pm
And the only call worse than my one above, was that of whoever is in charge of the ad breaks on MLB.TV who managed to miss Feliciano retiring Dunn, and the side. Well done all around.
May 27th, 2009 at 6:49 pm
My Lester for Lackey, who wins?
May 27th, 2009 at 7:04 pm
@Gareth: Dan Murphy has a rare 5 RBI game, courtesy of the umpires call on what was actually a double transformed into a homer, as well as the incredibly inept Nats bullpen. Daniel Cabrera, whom I personally thought was the worst of the bunch, got his ticket back to the minors. Reportedly, the pitching coach of the Nats stated: “I got tired of looking at him” Well, that’s a vote of confidence! Thus, Santana should pick up a W tonight.
May 27th, 2009 at 7:22 pm
How far off are Shields and Billingsley? Braun and Sizemore? Thanks.
May 27th, 2009 at 7:56 pm
@Paulie Allnuts: And they got the job done in the end. That comment on Cabrera was even worse – it was by Rizzo, the GM! I love playing the Nats 19 times a year.
May 27th, 2009 at 8:39 pm
Do you think Nelson or Wheeler is ahead in the close race nelson did some MR in the 4th today.
May 27th, 2009 at 8:57 pm
@I’m Keith Hernandez: or Balfour or ……..?
May 27th, 2009 at 9:03 pm
I need to swap a CI for an outfielder.I put Loney and Lowell up for offers,so far I’ve been offered Vlady for Lowell
good offer?
May 27th, 2009 at 9:10 pm
Ianetta, Napoli, or Doumit? I currently have Napoli, wondering which of the other two to stash on the DL. I’m tired of Napoli being on the wrong side of the platoon with Mathis.
May 27th, 2009 at 9:13 pm
Snyder is availble too ..
May 27th, 2009 at 9:26 pm
Vizcaino gets the save for Cleveland with Wood pitching last night but having the two previous days off.
May 27th, 2009 at 9:27 pm
@I’m Keith Hernandez: ignore last comment
@Gareth: Ha!
@anon: Lester
@Drev: The hitters are close, matter of preference. Bills is definitely above Shields.
@Doug Ault: I’d take Vlad for Lowell.
@Prince: Iannetta
May 27th, 2009 at 10:59 pm
My Rios + M. Gonzalez for his Quentin? Keeper league, keep 6.
@brad: I’d want Quentin.
