Texas Can’t Win With Chris Davis, Cantu With Jorge
Chris Davis is so easy to strike out that pitchers should let him get a 4th or 5th strike like you’d give the small-for-his-age kid in little league. “Good cut, Chris!” Then the parent who needs anger management screams, “It’s on a freakin’ tee! Hit the damn ball!” Davis is also so easy to strike out the Rangers felt like they needed to go out and get someone who is marginally better. Enter Jorge Cantu. Or as I like to call him, the guy I told you to sell back at the end of April when his value was at its highest. Cantu gets a boost in value because he’s now going to be hitting in a lineup with Giant Machine and Hulk Machine, while calling Coors South home. I’d grab Cantu off waivers if I was hurting at my corner infidel spot. Meanwhile, Chris Davis heads to the minors to try and reclaim that glory that had Bill James projecting him for, like, 40 homers and 10 steals. Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:
Ian Kinsler – Back to the DL with a strained groin and could be out until the end of August. Who had July 29th in the ‘Kinsler goes back on DL’ pool? Kinsler’s officially dropping way down in 2011 drafts. He might be the fourth Ranger drafted next year. I smell a sleeper post about him from January Grey. January Grey, “Leave me alone, I’m watching Jersey Shore.”
Brett Wallace – It’s ironic he’s only a 1st base prospect because he’s getting passed around the majors like a trollop who’s been a lot farther than 1st base. For those keeping score, he’s gone from STL to OAK in the Matt Holliday deal, OAK to TOR for OF prospect Michael Taylor (whom Toronto got in the Halladay deal), and now from TOR to HOU for OF prospect Anthony Gose. The book on Walllace is he’s a great hitter with a bad glove (hence the move from 3B to 1B). Now it’s one thing when STL trades a 1B (when they have Pujols) or when Oakland trades a 1B (Billy Beane likes to keep busy) but when the Lyle Overbay-playing Blue Jays trade a 1B prospect one has to wonder. Is something wrong here 0r is the Jays GM, Alex the Greek just opa’ing prospects into the fireplace? Either way, Lance Berkman looks like he’s about to embark on the Casino Bus. If Wallace gets called up, he’s immediately mixed league material. He hit 18 homers in 385 minor league ABs this year. Though it was in the PCL. BTW, this is the longest blurb ever for a roundup. I don’t even remember who I was talking about. Oh, Brett Wallace! Yeah, he can hit, grab him now in NL-Only leagues, deep mixed leagues and keepers, just in case he’s called up.
Matt Capps – Traded to the Twins for Wilson Ramos, a top catching prospect, and Joe Testa, who throws straight gas, but is still very young. Look at the Nats making moves! Too bad Bowden wasn’t still around, he would’ve never stood for that. As much as I’d prefer to talk about how the Nats can be a serious contender in two years, this is after all a fantasy blog. If you’re really desperate for saves, I’d hold Rauch just in case he sees some chances or if you need rebounds (he’s tall!), but the Minnesota papers are reporting Capps will close. I tend to believe the Minnesotans, salt of the earth people yadda2. Also, if Capps doesn’t close, then it looks even worse that the Twins traded those prospects away. Gotta keep up appearances, ya know?
Miguel Tejada – Traded to the Padres to play….where? He could play shortstop with the range of Cal Ripken but that dude’s 50 years old. He could play 3B and move Headley back to the OF, but is Tejada really a better bat than the Padres worst corner OF? Maybe, and that’s just sad.
Josh Bell – Will replace Tejada at 3rd base for the Suckie O’s. Bell’s AL-Only ownable, which is saying very little since Daric Barton is AL-Only material. Bell needs to get hot before picking up in mixed leagues, or, if you speak street, he needs to be fire on Crunk Juice.
Michael Wuertz – Now Bailey’s headed to the DL. Wuertz has shown himself to be pretty adept at blowing save opportunities, so he’s no sure thing, but Breslow is? As German prostitutes like to say, I grabbed Wuertz. (BTW, whenever I think of a German prostitute, I picture a woman that could have easily been a female wrestler if she just got a few breaks.)
Neil Walker – 1-for-4 with his 5th homer and 2nd in three games. I’ve knocked him a bunch, but when you’re looking at a Pu-Pu Platter of middle infielders, Walker’s at least hitting.
Matt Diaz – First time I was able to get Diaz into my lineup because it was a short schedule day and he homered. That’s how you roll the Dye-as!
Miguel Montero – 4 for his last 8 with a homer yesterday. Instead of just letting their catcher scabs be, I’ve noticed people are dropping Montero. He could have a solid final two months.
Ian Desmond – 2-for-3 with his 7th homer. Please make note of this next year when you’re drafting. A 10/10 guy looks good when you’re drafting him, but when you’re actually waiting for him to get to 10/10 it’s mind numbingly boring.
Scott Olsen – 6 IP, 2 ER, 7 baserunners, 1 K. He’ll be in this afternoon’s Buy/Sell. And that’s a promise or my name isn’t Grey “El Toro” Albright.
Drew Storen – Clippard’s been a hot mess for a while now, so I’d grab Storen for saves. If you’re really hurting for saves, I’d grab Clippard too. If you’re really, really hurting for saves, I’d grab Sean Burnett. (And I did grab Clippard and Burnett in some leagues — My name is Grey “El Toro” Albright and I am a save vulture. Please forgive me if I have told you to pick up a guy that has shat on your ratios. I am powerless to my vulturing. Anyone got some coffee and cigarettes?)
Ramon Castro – Hit 2 homers yesterday. Appropriate of nothing, doesn’t his goatee look like a sideways yin and yang symbol? Maybe it’s me.
Carlos Quentin – 2-for-4 with his 20th home run. Sweet, now stay healthy for two months and hit.
Raul Ibanez – Hit his 2nd homer in the last week and he just missed his third with a WTF (Warning Track Fly). Also, hitting near .450 in the last week.
David Price – 6 1/3 IP, 2 ER, 9 baserunners, 9 Ks as he recorded his 14th win. That sound you hear is the BBWAA preparing their AL Cy Young vote for Price. Voter, “A team win is the most important thing. And if a guy pitches with moxie. That’s important too.”
Anibal Sanchez – 9 IP, 0 ER, 2 baserunners (1 Hit), 8 Ks. And he’s got a no-hitter on his resume too from 2006. Pretty impressive given his career WHIP is 1.45. Kind of feast or famine – fitting for a guy whose name anagrams to He’s Za Cannibal.

I’m one of the dudes who dropped Montero as I was also carrying Olivo from Montero’s DL days. When I had to choose between the two, it was Montero and Arizona’s 37 wins, 452 runs scored versus Olivo and Colorado’s 52 wins, 478 runs scored – plus they play in Coors. Needless to say, I stuck with Olivo.
It seems maybe Olivo’s running low on gas and Montero is making up for his time off.
I’m going to try to trade Olivo straight up for someone in the next two days. One guy in my league seems to have missed my early week drop of Montero and added Jason Kendall this morning. I’ll try to trade Olivo to him for his Jeter. Otherwise I’m going to swap out Olivo for Montero.

@Grey et al. Who is the better pick-up to vulture saves–Clippard or Wuertz? Also, in case you didn’t see my post later last night, thanks for the email re: the Longoria for Buck/Ruiz trade. I posted it on the league message board last night. We have 4 objections now, just need one more for commish review, and I am certain this trade will be reviewed. The owner receiving Longoria posted a message saying no collusion, she offered Nellie Cruz for Longoria straight-up and the other team countered with Buck/Ruiz, saying they need catchers (2 in our league). So no collusion, just monumental stupidity on a scale the size of the Grand Canyon. But even with no collusion, that level of stupidity should be overturned, right? I mean, in the interest of keeping the league competitive.

@Grey: How much FAAB would you bid for Drew Storen in a 10-team mixed league out of a $100 budget? I’ve only got $35 left, but we are allowed to use $0 bids, so when I run out I can still add players each week, just not ones anyone else wants. I’m in the lead of the league by 9 points (I’m at 73 and 2 teams are at 64), but I can pick up points in saves. Also keep in mind I have Bailey and his sore lower back.

I have deep SP in a 12-team AL-only league (ERA, WHIP, K/9, QS, H, SV) with Haren, Hughes, Buchholz, Gio, Liriano and Slowey. We play 4. Some guys only have 3 SPs total, so I’ve been killing a fly with a sledgehammer in the QS category. It’s hard to pry bats away from people. Is it crazy to offer Hughes (who might start to get skipped) for Kinsler (who should be back for our playoffs)? I currently have SRod and Lopez at 2b and Util, so it could be an upgrade. Should I try Slowey first, or would that be insulting?

Grey,
Great anagram with Anibal.
I can’t believe I have both Chase Utley and Ian Kinsler (Reeks nullity) in a 12 team keeper and I am looking for a 2B right now. Rhymes since I need the steals…or do you see Theriot as a better option.
My roster is all bottled up, I would have to drop one of the three pitchers to add a 2B – Cahill, Wandy, or De La Rosa.
I have been trying to move Wieters since I have Soto, but no one is biting. Do I just outright drop Wieters and not drop any of the pitchers?
Thanks,

Regardless, today’s stupidity can be tomorrow’s brilliance. It’s base-a-ball. You just never know. I have seen many apparent lopsided trades, pan out the other way. Well, my OF is so strong that over the past 30 days, Adam Jones provided the least production. I needed to clear a roster spot and thought that I might as well try to pick up saves (that I need).

From mlb’s Nationals website, “With Capps gone, the Nationals will split the closer’s duties between Sean Burnett, Tyler Clippard and Drew Storen.”
So, I suppose if you grabbed Burnett you should be psyched, but I was banking on Storen taking over. I think it’ll probably end up with Storen as the closer, but this might be a redux of the Tampa Bay pre-Soriano debacle.

if you are desperate for saves and decide you are definitely gonna trade adam jones for saves, there is no problem with posting a league wide email (or message board posting if people check the board often) stating that you are wanting to trade jones for saves, and you will be accepting the best offer you’ve received in 2 days. if wood is the best and everyone bitches about you selling him short, then you can say that you opened the bidding to everyone and that was the best offer you got.
usually when i see a trade like that though, i assume that person got in their head they wanted to trade adam jones and sold him at first offer.

Oh my…..rumor out that Kenny Williams may be trying to net both Brett Myers and Berkman from Houston now. That would be huge for Chicago.

@simply fred: and carlos ruiz is the current 27th rated fantasy catcher, and 462 overall according to cbs player rater. so don’t give me the 2 catcher crap. you’d probably be better off with an empty C slot and longoria than you would with ruiz.

in one of my leagues someone just traded mauer for j-up.
the league board went crazy about the “awful” trade. i posted that i thought the upton side was the clear and easy winner, especially given the mauer owner had posey to plug and play. i was then blasted by everyone. it’s been awfully quite since i posted the statistical analysis.
the sad part is that i’m in the middle of the pack in this league due to haren’s april/may and beckett’s april dragging down my pitching ratios.

Is there a website where you can find out whom a starter will be pitching against for the rest of the season? I’m kind of tired of looking at team calendars and counting every 5th day.
[Reply]
@Howard: Eh
@Frank Rizzo: Stewart has more steals than Beckham and 10 more homers and Beckham hits ninth.
@Frank Rizzo: Be good for both teams.
@Frank Kim: Ask Matthew Berry.
@XNadyMen: Wuertz
@tHe sHiT: You had one recently?
@Frank Kim: Not that I know of.
[Reply]
July 30th, 2010 at 9:28 am
@XNadyMen: For now I’d go with Weurtz.
@ThePoonTycoon: I agree; give the party accused of being ripped an opportunity to defend the trade. If they can’t/won’t, then let the self-righteous indignation commence. Earlier this year, I got all Jack McCoy on a terrible trade that couldn’t be defended. Ultimately, a couple early draft picks were thrown in to make things a little more fair.

@hoju: This will be clearer for me in the next 24 hours, but I think it’ll shake out like: Aardsma, Storen, Wood, Wuertz, Simon, Perez, Clippard, Gutierrez
Caveat emptor, after Aardsma, most of those are a push. And that’s if Aardsma doesn’t get traded.

@Grey: I don’t get it. Was Matthew Berry asking for the same thing?
[Reply]
July 30th, 2010 at 9:44 am
@barker: I’d cut Lowell in favor of giving Snider a chance. Lowell doesn’t have a clear path to playing time.
Demonic will stick around if he plays well. Or, he’ll stick around if he’s ok and Ibanez stays terrible. Keep in mind that he’s going to be sitting against (some) lefties. If you can get something nice for him, I’d make the deal. But it it’s a keeper, don’t go selling him for a brain freeze.
Regarding lunch, I think it depends on the format. If Smuckers Goober Grape is available, it’s definitely worth a flier.
[Reply]
@hoju: Aardsma, Wood, Storen, Perez…Agree with Peter though, could change by the hour.
@barker: Lose Lowell. But depends what you can get for Brown.
@I’m so Prado of you: “Clippard’s been a hot mess for a while now, so I’d grab Storen for saves. If you’re really hurting for saves, I’d grab Clippard too. If you’re really, really hurting for saves, I’d grab Sean Burnett.”

Phil Hughes @ TB or Wade LeBlanc vs FLA at home?
Hughes has been harshin my mellow lately, but he’s been great on the road this year (2.36 ERA, .225 BAA). TB is def a danger zone, while LeWhite has been very good at Petco (2.36 ERA, .261 BAA) and the Marlins taint nothing special. I’m torn here. Could also pick up Wade Davis and pitch Hughes/Davis head-to-head to go after a W, but the idea of streaming a guy against the Yanks gives me the shrivels.

So it looks like Edwin Jackson is headed to Chicago, and, though it hasn’t been confirmed, people seem to assume it would be for Daniel Hudson. I thought this would raise Hudson’s value, so I checked him out in my 14 team league, but learned that he basically has been pitching poorly against teams that, except for KC, I would argue are worse than those in the NL West– v. KC he gave up 5 R in 4 IP; @ SEA he did better (1 ER, 6.2 IP, but still walked 4); and then @OAK he gave up 5 ER in 5 IP, and again walked 4. After the KC start, I read a lot of stuff explaining it was first game jitters. After the second, that he had the jitters behind him and was fulfilling expectations. And after the third, I read nothing.

@ThePoonTycoon: You make a point that sounds good (re: a chance to defend one’s self). However, often people come from different perspectives (frequently based on the how they drafted someone). It gets tedious trying to have to explain the layers that one considers, only to find out the explanation falls on not-understanding ears.
Point of reference: Matthole’s comments. He questions nearly every trade. Sometimes after the trade “oh, I understand”. More often: “fred is just stupid.”
I’ve learned everyone has their own biases and it’s OK for them to have them. I’d just prefer not to have to give them all of my inside thinking every time it’s a trade they might not make. Nevertheless, I do it when challenged.
Inspite of the angst of some, I still haven’t had a trade vetoed.

the problem with taking the high road ==> No Vetoes …EVER ….
is that , eventually , when push comes to shove , and you reconcile yourself with the fact that you just can’t play in a league where the level of competition is SO out-of-balance , (i’m talking owner acumen , here , and not current rosters) that you find yourself with no option but to withdraw from the league .
in one-year leagues , you can just chalk it up to being “suckered” , again .
but , in keeper leagues , the effect is a “dummy-ing” down , where strong competitors flee , and the league is left with a revolving-door situation of trying to find new owners to take over weak teams against a few super-powers , who feel that fleecing someone is what a good league is all about .
