Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

When Sveum told Rafael Dolis that they need him to fill in for Carlos Marmol, he took them way too literally.  “So you don’t want me to walk everyone while blowing games?  Totally mi mal!”  That was Rafael Dolis talking through his translator who speaks Spanglish.  “Can we get a translator who speaks English and Spanish…Separately!”  That’s Sveum losing his shizz. James Russell or Shawn Camp will attempt to do what no other Cub before them has done with already limited opportunities.  All Sveum needs to yell “Save um!” is A closer.  I grabbed James Russell where he was available, but I’m not speculating on two closers when Marmol is due back and the Cubs are headed for 100 losses.   If someone dropped Marmol, I’d grab him since he’ll probably get the job back.  I’m sure if you were the one who dropped him, you won’t be rushing to pick him back up, unless you’ve gotten used to the smell in the monkey cage.  Anyway, here’s what else I saw this weekend in fantasy baseball:

Matt Garza – 5 IP, 5 ER, 8 baserunners, 6 Ks.  This comes after a poor performance vs. the Astros (3 IP, 7 ER).  After his last performance, Sveum said that wasn’t Garza pitching.  Well, I’m not sure if he’s still on vacation with a really poor stunt double — “Hey, I’m Luis Guzman.  You might remember me from Boogie Nights, Magnolia and filling in for Matt Garza.” — but I think Garza (or his stand-in) was a bit unlucky yesterday.  I’d see if I could get him from his owners for a cheap price.

Brandon League – Someone talked in our fantasy baseball forums about how this was a year to pay for saves.  Obviously the opposite is true, and not to bust on that person’s opinion, but one of the closers they mention as someone they would’ve happily paid for was Brandon League.  This was only two weeks ago.  As we know by now, League is out as the closer.  You basically didn’t need to draft one closer this year because at least once a week (most times more than that) there’s been a closer change.  Five days ago, I lost BB-Rod in Washington.  On Saturday, I gained Wilhelmsen, and, on Sunday, I gained Russell.  I don’t think Wilhelmsen will be long for the Mariners role, even though he does have the “Ikea furniture-sounding” name that has worked out well this year (Janssen).  My guess is League will be saving games again by mid-June.

Roy Halladay – Left yesterday’s game with shoulder soreness.  That would explain his human behavior recently, which sounds like a diagnosis by Dr. Zaius.

Adam Wainwright – 6 IP, 1 ER, 7 baserunners, 2 Ks vs. Halladay.  It was like a wonderfully sad poem having a once great pitcher coming back from injury pitching great again and a great pitcher leaving injured.  What, poetry doesn’t always have to rhyme, as the kid kinda says in Moonrise Kingdom.  A movie I can’t recommend enough.  Saturate me in your goofball art direction, Wes Anderson.

Matt Adams – 2-for-4, 1 run, 1 RBI and his 1st home run.  Too bad Joe Maddon doesn’t manage the Cards cause then Matt Adams would probably be hitting third, though then Daniel Descalso would be hitting cleanup.

Carlos Beltran – 1-for-4, 3 RBIs (which is thankfully not three Ron Ben-Israels) with his 15th homer.  I knew someone from my aging outfielder tier of Torii, Wells and Beltran tier would break out to be this year’s Zombino; I didn’t choose right though on any of my teams.  Sad emoticon with a squiggly line for a mustache.

Quintin Berry – 3-for-4, 2 runs with 2 steals as he bats .381.  Hey, hey, hey, it’s HeRun!

Denard Span – 2-for-5 with a steal, he’s batting .333 over the last week.  This post is overflowing with SAGNOF!  It’s like the go-go 80’s when the foul lines were made with cocaine.  Ron Washington wistfully, “They don’t make grounders up the line like they used to.”

P.J. Walters – 6 IP, 2 ER, 12 baserunners (5 BBs), 4 Ks, lowering his ERA to 2.96.  Pajamas has now strung together four solid starts, but I don’t think it’s going to continue.  His K-rate is bleh and his BABIP has been win-any-lottery-outside-of-a-Nigerian-one lucky.

Mat Latos – 7 1/3 IP, 5 ER, and no baserunners, because he only gave up 5 hits and no walks, but all five hits were solo homers as he gave his owners a bad case of xFIPlash.  Hey, Latos, I hate to be a noodge, but you think you can give up something other than a solo homer?  Like maybe a single?  I’d even take the occasional double.

Jay Bruce – 1-for-3 with his 11th homer and a long sigh of relief from his owners after seeing him emerge from a lengthy slump, and that sigh can be expressed as Bruuuuuuuuuuuuuce.

Todd Frazier – 1-for-3 with his 2nd homer in the last five games.  Hmm, I own him on a couple of teams and I thought he had more homers in the last ten games (still two).  Maybe I’m subconsciously comparing him to Hosmer.

Heath Bell – Blew another save the other day, which only lengthened his leash with Ozzie.  *Grey shrugs*  It’s a weird, dark place inside Ozzie’s head, don’t try and get in there.  If you’re really desperate for saves, I could see grabbing Cishek.

Aramis Ramirez – Hasn’t played since being plunked on Friday.  Eric Plunk, “You owe me a nickel for the use of that word.”  Between Ryan Zimmerman, Hosmer and Aramis, I should’ve punted corner men in the RCL.  Yes, this is all about me!

Erik Bedard – 6 IP, 0 ER, 6 baserunners, 3 Ks.  On a real baseball note, it’s sad when the Cubs are taken in three games by the Pirates and it’s not surprising.  It’s as if 103 years without a World Series is not enough for Epstein.  He wants to turn around a 100 loss/104 years without a World Series next year.

Daniel Hudson – 5 IP, 2 ER, 7 baserunners, 3 Ks.  Looked a little rusty, but I’m more concerned about little Krispie.  Hoping this isn’t going to be the Krispie we see for the rest of the year just because he was rushed back by a week or so.

Jeff Francoeur – 2-for-4, 2 runs, 1 RBI and his fifth Freedom Fly in what-feels-like the last week.  BTW, for all of you in the Kansas City area, on Halloween you should put on a Francoeur jersey and a bottle cap hat and say you’re Frenchy dressing.

Ubaldo Jimenez – 4 IP, 7 ER.  Who I really feel sorry for is the Ubaldo babies born in the summer of 2010 to Colorado parents.  Think of little Ubaldo Abramowitz!

J.P. Arencibia – 2-for-4, 2 runs, 2 RBIs and his 8th and 9th homers.  What’s the J.P. stand for?  John Paul?  Jazzy Phizzle?  Inside out pajamas?

Colby Rasmus – 3-for-5, 2 runs, 2 RBIs and his 2nd homer in as many games.  You wouldn’t believe me if I told you to pick him up, so I’ll tell you not to pick him up and then don’t believe that.  Clear?  Awesome!

Kyle Drabek – 3 IP, 9 ER vs. the Rangers in Texas.  Is anyone startable vs. the Rangers in Coors South?  Seriously, is there anyone?  Kershaw?  Verlander?  Mike Krukow from RBI Baseball?

Mike Napoli – 2-for-3, 3 runs, 2 RBIs and his 8th homer, raising his average .239.  He’ll probably go on a tear again where he hits 5 homers in the next week, then goes 0 for his following 50.

Alexei Ramirez – 3-for-5, 1 run, 2 RBIs and his 5th steal, and 2-for-4 with a steal the day before.    Good to see him finally deciding to start playing baseball.  Really, Alexei, don’t be Russian.

Alex Rios – 1-for-4 with a steal and a homer on Saturday.  For almost two months, he’s like a Hyundai, then he finally shows who Alex is.

R.A. Dickey – 7 1/3 IP, 0 ER, 4 baserunners, 10 Ks.  I know, I had hesitation about picking up a knuckleballer too, but you have to give him a shot already.  As someone once said, “The difference between try and triumph is just a little umph.”

Carlos Gonzalez – 2 homers yesterday.  I’m only mentioning him because someone in the comments will be like, “Grey, love the ‘stache.  It’s more masculine than Brut aftershave.  But I got a pregunta, why no mention of CarGo?”  Guys and four girl readers, I really need to talk about top guys that are doing well?  You should be grateful I never mention any of your top players, cause if I’m talking about them, they’re not doing that well.  Telling you about guys like Quintin Berry can actually make a difference, yah?  Yah.

Sean Rodriguez – 2-for-4 and a homer.  I’m watching him closely to see if he takes the step from a one homer a week guy to a hot schmotato.  To make said step, he just needs to hit another homer or go 2-for-4 on back-to-back days.  Not exactly a Neil Armstrong-type step here.

Adrian Gonzalez – 1-for-4, 3 RBIs and his 4th homer.  Damn, just as The Boston Globe was typesetting their A-Drain title.

Roy Oswalt – Deals have been slow moving with Oswalt and not just because he’s riding on a tractor as teams follow next to him on golf carts.  He supposedly wants “John Deere money” and teams are only offering “Caterpillar backhoe” money.

Melky Cabrera – 4-for-4, 3 runs a slam & legs and, like John Holmes, he had an extra helping of legs.   The only way Melky’s season could be going any better is if his last name was Furbush.

Hey man, what do you think about this trade?

I get Adam Jones. I give Josh Hamilton.

Hamilton is a better but he is a major injury risk.

      @Jimmy The S Maven,

I don’t necessarily disagree with the logic but you can get more than Jones for Hamilton. Try for Jones, plus an upgrade elsewhere

@Jimmy The S Maven, Whoaaa you don’t trade Hamilton for anyone right now, except maybe Braun or Kemp when he returns.

Hambos a guy that can win you a league, I bet most people with him are in 1st right now (I am). You need much more than Jones.

@Jimmy The S Maven, Hey Jimmy the Shit Maven. Nice to see you here.

Jimmy did not tell the whole story and he doesn’t own Hamilton.or Jones anyway in our league.

      23-man rosters
      $260 budget on draft day
      $290 salary cap

Hamilton $25 and Jones $5 this year

Next year- Hamilton $25, Jones $10

I still think I would rather have Hamilton. The guy who would be receiving Hamilton is not in any kind of cap hit. He also is trying to argue that Jones is a better player anyway!!!

My point is that the guys that drafted closers tend to be near the top of my league while the rest of us are stuck with terrible, terrible, terrible ERAs, WHIPs, and middling amounts of saves from the likes of Aceves, Santiago, Cordero, Lidge, Cashner, Reed, and Rauch. I understand you have a brand to protect with SAGNOF, but I’m taking the contrarian view next year for sure. I’ll take the failure rate of the list (ever seen drafted 1Bs failure rate?) below over what I’ve had this season anytime. The opportunity cost of hunting and stashing alone has hurt me, but ERA and WHIP are devastated. I’d have been better off paying for saves or punting them.

Here is the order of closers drafted in my league, up to round 17.

    Craig Kimbrel
    Jonathan Papelbon
    Mariano Rivera
    John Axford
    Drew Storen
    Heath Bell
    Brian Wilson
    José Valverde
    Andrew Bailey
    J.J. Putz
    Joel Hanrahan
    Rafael Betancourt
    Jordan Walden
    Carlos Mármol
    Huston Street
    Sergio Santos
    Jason Motte
    Brandon League
    Kyle Farnsworth
    Chris Pérez
    Kenley Jansen
    Jim Johnson

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

@Mdgross, There’s no brand to protect… You haven’t proven anything by listing these closers… More closers fail the more it makes sense to not pay for them…

      • mdgross says:
        (link)

@Grey, I haven’t attempted a proof any more than you have. I see your draft results in F&F, drafting Marmol in round 9 and Motte in round 11. That was smart of you in that you ended up with at least one $14 salad.

    • chunk says:
      (link)

@Mdgross, @Mdgross, Sagnof doesn’t mean you shouldn’t draft closers. Wait for all the high priced big name guys go off the board, and THEN go crazy on the donkeycorns. Draft at least 3 closers. I waited forever to draft closers and ended up with Johnson, Motte, Betencourt, and Broxton. Then if some don’t work out, it’s not big deal since you didn’t waste any high draft picks, like the guy that took bailey and Storen and thought he was all set.

Draft Closers, just not the good ones.

      • mdgross says:
        (link)

@chunk, unfortunately the good ones are the ones that have paid for themselves and been predictable. Drafting Bailey and Storen is bad luck, but it’s worse to have ended up with my list. I can see a strong case for getting tons of donkeycorns, but are you going to sit them and watch them evolve or play them and throw away the busts? The problem there is that the busts have already done their damage. Does anyone actually sit closers?

    • A Hill O' Beans says:
      (link)

@Mdgross, So the guys in one league that drafted closers early are doing well and this is evidence that you should do the same in order to do well?

As a counter point I’ll take my RCL league. The first closer I drafted was Street in the 15th round, then Marshall (18th RD), Myers (21st RD), Broxton (23rd RD) and Lidge (25th RD). Throw in Janssen and a couple other closers from the WW that have come and gone so far this season.

Currently this team that took nothing but late closers is 1st overall, 1st in ERA (2.96), 1st in WHIP (1.15) and 4th in Saves (35).

The guys who drafted the top closers? Well Kimbrel in the 6th round (10th place), Rivera in the 7th round (8th place), Papelbon/Axford in the 8th (6th place/10th place). And so on and so forth. You’ll notice the same guy drafted Kimbrel and Axford, 2 elite closers who have been pretty solid and actually worked out. That guy who’s in 10th place right now is in 5th place in saves. Oh, and he also drafted another stud closer in B. Wilson. Didn’t work out so well for him drafting stud closers.

And before you say it must be the high picks I used on SP that are propping up my ERA/WHIP. I took Wilson in the 6th round, Strasburg (7th RD), Beachy (10th RD), Minor (14th RD), Sale (17th RD) and Liriano (19th RD). Needless to say Minor and Liriano destroyed my ERA/WHIP before I dropped them.

What I’m trying to say is that you don’t need to spend a high draft pick on a closer, your odds of getting great numbers aren’t that different than a middle of the pack closer because it changes so much from year to year. Get quantity, not quality.

There are a ton of guys that were drafted late or not at all that could have gotten you saves this year without killing your ERA/WHIP. Johnson, Rodney, Perez, Myers, Casilla, Broxton, the list goes on. I’m pretty sure this group is bigger than the group of elite closers that can say the same.

      • mdgross says:
        (link)

@A Hill O’ Beans, in my league, the guys who drafted closers high tend to be dominating in WHIP, ERA, and absolutely making a killing in saves. They are selling saves for Uggla and, just now, Dunn. That’s not a bad position to be in, I think. Meanwhile, I have a 4.5X ERA and a 1.4X WHIP. It’s going to be way uphill the rest of the way.

In F&F, Huston Street/Cashner for Jared Weaver? Reed for Corey Hart? These more like $18 salads.

And you got Strasburg in round 7???

        • A Hill O' Beans says:
          (link)

@mdgross, I’m not sure what’s so surprising about getting Strsburg at the beginning of the 7th round, his ADP is the ,idle of the 6th.

As far as WHIP/ERA goes, closers have very little effect on them in the long run. They only pitch 1/3 (or 1/4) of the innings that a starter does, so if you’ve got a bad ERA/WHIP it probably has more to do with your starters than it does with your closers. Same thing for the guys with good ERA/WHIP in your league, those stats are heavily influenced by your starters, not your closers.

As far as trading power for closers, you say guys are getting Dunn/Uggla for closers but, you don’t say what closers they’re giving up to get those guys.

          • mdgross says:
            (link)

@A Hill O’ Beans, sorry it was Uggla for Papelbon and Dunn for Castilla I, of course, was stuck with Romo in that particular chase.

And I am aware of their affect: 1/3 a closer. That isn’t insignificant. My starters are average even though I pick my spots, but my bullpen is dragging me down, down down.

        • Awesomus Maximus

          Awesomus Maximus says:
          (link)

@mdgross, I drafted zero (0) closers and I’m in 1st place in saves… 8 saves more than my nearest competitors. And the damage to my ratios? I’m in 2nd place in ERA, and 4th place in WHIP. Not only that, my team has been bouncing in and out of 1st place with a few others all season long.

So what’s the real difference between your team and my team? You have made bad FA closer pickups while I have made good ones. Obviously the good CHEAP options are out there… my team is proof positive of that.

Luck, timing, research, knowledge… whatever you want to attribute it to, that’s the real difference here. So I’m not sure why you think you would have had better results with your “top closer” picks than you have with your SAGNOF picks.

Had I purchased a couple of big names at a position with so much turnover and failure (as you’re saying you wish you’d done), that would be relying on luck… and yes, I agree, that’s delusional.

    Melky Furbush…well played

I love me some Wes Anderson, nice to see the recommendation for Moonrise Kingdom. I remember going to see The Life Aquatic in Boston and in a packed theater I’m pretty sure I was the only one that was laughing hysterically. Good stuff, can’t wait to see it, didn’t it JUST open?

I was watching that COL @ CIN game yesterday, it was insane. Musta been the humidity (it’s too humid!) ‘cuz the ball was leaping out of the park. Well, that and it’s Great American Ballpark. Todd Frazier’s homerun looked like a broken bat homer at first, then they replayed it and he actually let go of the bat when he hit it, like he threw the bat at the ball, kinda crazy. Votto had a homer off Moyer where he started in the back of the batting box, took a step forward (towards the mound) and then swung, like he was getting a running start at a Moyer 79 MPH fastball. It looked very beer league softball-esque. Matt Stairs would be proud. So yea, anywhere else yesterday Latos throws scoreless innings as those HRs become flyouts.

Happy Memorial Day everyone, thank you to all those that have served, you’re the real heros.

My question: am I better off holding onto Cishek or picking up an available Marmol on the grounds that he’ll be closing in Chicago again soon? Or am I better off going back to Hernandez?

They would move to the bench once Jennings or Jay return with Berkman and Bonifacio occupying my DL spots.

    • Hunter says:
      (link)

@wovenstrap, If I’m understanding your question correctly, the WORST guys on your staff are Latos, Marcum, and Wandy???? Unless it is like a five team league, you don’t dump any of those guys. Package two
Of them for a decent offensive piece.

      • @Hunter, Yeah, my draft worked out pretty well. 9-team league. My other starters are CJW, Greinke, Gio, Anibal, and Beachy. My league is rather trade-resistant, so it will take something like that to get something good. But you’re right.

In a 12 team standard HTH league, who are you starting?

    Garza @SF
    Zambrano vsWAS @PHI

With Garza I already have 9 starts to my opponents’ 4. Zambrano would make 10-4. So take ratios into account at least as much as counting stats. I’ve got a good rest of the staff (Hamels, Weaver, Anibal, Zimmermann, Gallardo) but no closer. Trying to win all 4 pitching categories is crucial as my offense is pretty weak.

    Smyly @BOS
    Burnett CIN
    Bass @CUBS
    Morrow BAL

Also, the owner of Lincecum is trying to get Gio Gonzalez out of me. Is Gio a good sell high candidate in an NL only keeper league for Timmy, or did I just hit fantasy gold?

  66. In a league with very limited moves, would Chisenhall be a far btter fill in for Longoria than the steady, but yawnstipating Chris Johnson? Happy Memorial folks.

    @Grey, happy MD!

After much churning I have a lineup I’m fairly comfortable with but I’d like one more slot on offense for a hot schmotato. Who would you drop, for Rasmus or a creeper to be named later (Rizzo is still unclaimed, for example), or should I stand pat? (obviously I don’t care much about saves)

      • Abdoozy says:
        (link)

@Grey, too late, Rasmus is gone
So I assume Murph is my weakest link?

Whats your philosophy on bench depth on offense in general? Some of you ‘purts dont like using a bench slot for batting. I like a little flexibility in bats but pitching is a premium in this league and so far I have only been benching one batter at the most. (There is a 10 start limit)

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

@Abdoozy, I don’t like having bench bats, but sometimes it’s impossible to avoid if you have a guy that’s not playing well or every day… Murphy is your weakest link, yeah…

  68. Melvin Emanuel says:

    @Grey

Someone just dropped Alex Gordon in my 10 team mixed league, is he worth rostering in that format? I would either be dropping Gardner (DL) or Dickey (my 8th SP).

@Melvin Emanuel, Drop Dickey for him…

  69. jack says:

Hanson painted a disasterpiece! Is there a term for benching a pitcher for tough matchups, watching him excel on your bench, then starting him and watching him fall to pieces when active? There should be, it’s a gut-wrencher, and a frequent occurence (for me unfortunately)

    • Grey

      @jack, Ha! Well played…

  70. Dan says:

Grey, can I get your opinion on Ryan Dempster? I just swindled him as a throw in in a trade.

I’m wondering if he is a good pitcher in a 12 team 6X6 head to head league with QS. Is he a better choice over streaming candidates like Paulino and Hunter?

And what do you think the chances are that he gets traded to a contender by the trading deadline?

I was seeing miles and miles of Texless. When I looked at my roster and saw my only available option,I Cuddyer’nt hardly breath(just like Tex,the former dirty dog and now my BFF)

So 10 days ago I snatched Morneau off waivers. That one looks like it might work(mutilates self in Morneaus stead to placate the injury Gods, then crosses unattached fingers)
A couple days after that I grabbed Rizzo to speculate on with my last roster spot while I waited to see how Morneau looked.
Then the guy who had Berkman bought into the torn ACL -end of season talk too soon and dropped him so I pounced and DL’ed him.KaChing!

And then Tex unsucks so much that the pressure variant has fantasy baseball type oil gushing out his anus.(I dunno what that means either,it just typed itself)

My first base situation seems to have gone from a rat and cockroach infested ghetto lined with crack ho’s and leftover 80’s style cassette player only boom boxes to Happy Apple Lane,Good Old USA.It’s a place where the sun shines, birds chirp and you never run out of Klondike bars ( or dyke porn).

Ahem-back to the original, meandered around point.Position aside-21 man roster 12 team 10×10 H2H,carrying 8 SP’s,the end of which is Marcum/ Garza(punted saves when punting wasn’t cool), who do you think will be more valuable as a end of roster dart throw, Rizzo or Bauer?I’ve only got 1 util spot and trading is tough in this league.

    • Grey

      Grey says:

@JSR, Clippard won’t keep the job once Storen returns… It’s not a good idea to trade most starters for closers, but you can trade Capuano for one…

@Grey, “Damn” if you were counting on his stats for today. Didn’t look too serious long term. He walked off the mound without any kind of bump in his step. If he was on the Mets, they’d have him listed as “due back by the 5th inning.”

  121. Dayan Viciedo do you think he going through a hot streak or he is for real and if he is for real – what can we expect from him next year if you are in a keeper league

    • @Mr Baseball, since there are more right hand pitchers you have to be able to hit right handers and Viciedo is hitting .271 with 8 bombs this year – there is a nice improvement here

Kinda like that dude who contributed so much to the OED from an insane asylum, who coincidentally shares the name of a pitcher who has driven me to the brink this year: Minor.

second – lucroy just hurt his hand – drop for AJ or Salty?

      • joe from point pleasant says:

        @Grey,

Agreed. He just made a nice sac bunt to move the runners over, which should go a long way toward cementing his spot at the top of the lineup. If he continues hitting with this much power, and stealing bases with efficiency (4-4 so far), he could really turn into a star. We already know he has the eye. Hopefully he can make good on his potential, but it’s easier said than done.

@Awesomus Maximus, His overall stats are still terrible and those numbers, while improved, aren’t setting the world on fire.

@Derrick, Perhaps you’re misunderstanding the term. “Buy low” means you catch the owner when they’re disappointed. If I’m a J-Up owner, I’m finally happy with the guy.

Setting the world on fire? No. Showing signs he can be the guy you drafted? Absolutely.

Can’t hurt to throw a trade offer out there, though.
