Prospect News: Wilson’s Not Alone or Can One Return A Brito?

Guardians 2B Juan Brito lost out in his bid for the second base job despite going five for his last ten at bats with zero strikeouts and two home runs. Tyler Freeman has been electric this spring, and though he’s been playing outfield this year after coming up as an infielder, he could probably slide back to the dirt if that’s his path to playing time. Gabriel Arias continues to exist and might be the opening day starter. I have never seen what Cleveland sees in him, but that’s irrelevant. Perhaps Cleveland will recall Brito at the first signs of distress at the keystone, but I’m not encouraged right now. 

UPDATE: Freeman has been traded to Colorado for Nolan Jones.  Unclear if this means anything to Brito’s chances, or if the Guardians are simply pursuing their quest to get Gabriel Arias as much playing time as possible.

Prospect News: Slowpening Day Jitters Or Leiter Than Mayo

I got pretty excited to have baseball with my morning coffee this week. Sure, I’ve been watching a lot of “baseball” already, but spring training rings pretty hollow compared to the real thing. Even without Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman, the Dodgers defeated the Cubs with ease. I don’t want to alarm anyone, but Los Angeles might be a problem this season. 

Rangers RHP Jack Leiter is throwing hard this spring and kicking his change up like all the cool kids are doing these days, and he’s finally getting some results after a pro career peppered by unexpected struggles. He’s all but locked up a spot in the season-opening rotation and could hold it all season if he can keep the ball in the strike zone and generate better outcomes than the 8.83 ERA he posted in 35.2 MLB innings last season.

Prospect News: Replacing Ronald Acuña Jr. In Dynasty Leagues

Been a downbeat week around the fantasy game. Nobody likes to see a star like Ronald Acuña Jr. lose another season to injury. Baseball is just a tick less interesting today. For our game, there’s not much one can do to replace an Acuña. In a 15-teamer where I’ve gotten off to a fast start and am in first place, I traded Kodai Senga, Landon Knack and Abimelec Ortiz for Brandon Nimmo. He’s not going to approximate Acuña, but he should fill an outfield spot and help me hold down the Runs category. He’s batting third this season and is on pace for his best RBI season by a long ways, even as his batting average has tumbled. He’s painting the statcast bars red, and his career outcomes suggest he’s got upside in the batting average category. Now I just need to replace a few dozen stolen bases. No big deal, right?

It’s 2:58 on Friday afternoon. Should be primetime real estate for escapism, but here I am staring at Dennis Franz’s naked ass. 

That’s not true, but it might as well be because I’m actually looking at a 15-team dynasty draft room. There’s six hours left on what was an eight-hour draft clock. The team that has the power to move us forward timed out last time and feels likely to time out again. Another serial offender timed out earlier today after carrying over the first two of eight-hour clock from last night, so the league has seen two picks in the last 20 hours. We’re close to the end, but it’s never felt further  away. 

Games were not designed to be played this way, but there’s no easy fix to this flaw in the design of dynasty leagues. Even in redraft leagues with fairly high entry fees, people fart around and people time out. The problem feels magnified in dynasty partly because it tends to be the usual suspects year over year. 

It wasn’t all bad though. First-Year-Player Draft season is mostly great. Or at least it should be. Here’s how it’s gone for me.

Bassitt Gets His Groove Back

Nice to see a team (the Jays) that has to play well actually play well. Feels like a rare thing this final week. It’s been like teams have been taking must-win as a challenge and saying, “Prove it!” Or like a spiteful child saying, “I don’t want to must win, you must win!” Chris Bassitt (7 2/3 IP, 0 ER, 6 baserunners, 12 Ks, ERA at 3.60) went out and must-won’d his behind off, and, from what I know of Bassitts and their rear porches, there were some dramatically wide swings and they smelled some other dog’s butts. Maybe that analogy got away from me, but you can’t spell analogy without anal. Hey now! Just opened Chris Bassitt’s player stat page, and you’re never gonna believe this, but what he’s done for the last six years? He’s doing it again! Wild, right? Chris Bassitt has made a career out of being criminally underrated. Look at his stats: 8.4 K/9, 2.7 BB/9, 3.60 ERA, and guess where he ranks for starters on the year on the Player Rater. That’s top 20 starter numbers. He will barely be a top 40 starter in drafts again in 2024. Underrated, always. Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:
