The MLB season rolls on. The All-Star Break is close. Pitchers are going on phantom IL stints. The DFS player pool is also shrinking as our opponents get bored and start thinking about football. This is a good time to take a step back and reexamine our DFS play. Maybe you set a goal for yourself this season. How are you doing towards that goal? It’s easy to fall into a trap where we examine each day we play DFS as a single unit. Unless you hit a hot streak with a few wins, a mindset that doesn’t include the forest for the trees can lead to a drained bankroll and you’ll be redepositing or taking a seat on the proverbial bench. That isn’t to say a break isn’t good once in a while. Maybe putting yourself on a phantom IL stink until after the break will have your arm fresh and ready to click some names.
If you aren’t ready for a break, let’s dig into a six-game slate on DraftKings tonight.

George Kirby, SP: $9,600 – Kirby is in an interesting matchup today against the banged-up Astros. Jose Altuve sounds like he’ll be on the shelf until at least after the ASB, and he joins the big lefty bat of Yordan Alvarez that is already there. The price is high, but the strikeouts could come against a mostly right-handed lineup.
Tanner Bibee, SP: $8,700 – The offensive lineups on the slate should spread ownership a bit evenly tonight. Bibbee will likely be the most owned pitcher, but his price and projection fit. I’ll avoid using him with the Guardians’ hitters as that will be the most popular combo.
Adley Rutschman, C: $5,300 – Louis Severino has been inconsistent this season. The Orioles are one of the teams I want to stack up today against him. When I stack a team that includes a hitter that is good with the stick, it’s always my goal to include him.
Ryan O’Hearn, C/1B: $3,600 – It’s crazy how the league works. Who thought that we’d see a succeeding Orioles lineup this year that included Ryan O’Hearn batting cleanup? It’s still not a good feeling to click on his name, but as a salary saver in our Orioles stack, he fits the build.
Jose Caballero, 2B/SS: $2,600 – I’m calling Jose out here as a potential salary relief option that can be plugged in at multiple IF spots. It’s not glamorous, but the Astros are so deep in their pitcher depth calling up someone from AAA to pitch tonight, that we might get lucky targeting against whoever it is.
Brett Baty, 3B: $2,800 – Another unowned salary relief option to fit with an expensive stack like the Orioles one we are building with these other players.
Gunnar Henderson, 3B/SS: $4,700 – Who doesn’t love to put a young hot hitter on their lineup to watch and cheer for? A core piece of an Orioles stack.
Cedric Mullins, OF: $4,900 – Leadoff Mullins is the best Mullins. Always a threat for a home run and stolen base combo meal. Even if you’re not playing a full Orioles stack, he’s a great one-off, too.
MJ Melendez, OF: $2,800 – There is a lot of leverage to be gained by stacking against a high-owned rookie pitcher like Tanner Bibee. I’m putting MJ here as a placeholder, but if you have the guts take any combination of Royals hitters as a path to pass a large part of the field rostering Bibee.
I’m Only Happy When It Rains
Rain could throw this slate for a loop in Cleveland. With a lot of ownership on the Guardians, keep a close eye on the forecast here as the lock time gets closer.
