Grey and Rudy are letting me run a team for Razzball, and I’m totally pumped about it. See, this is my first venture into the realm of expert leagues or writer’s leagues or whatever the hell you wanna call them and the pressure on a rookie like me is enormous. Grey told me I can only cover White Sox prospects if I don’t finish in the top eight. I feel like Andrew Luck or something… probably bigger than that, actually. Anyway. The auction happened a couple Thursdays ago and my strategy was simple: don’t look stupid. I’m not quite sure if I’ve succeeded in that regard. You tell me. Click here to see the complete auction results.

My goal was to stay on budget. I targeted a $180/$80 split between hitting and pitching and I ended up at $183/$77. Not bad. I also wanted to make sure I had some dough left near the end in order to ensure I could buy a few of my favorite sleepers for $2 or $3. This plan backfired. Not that I didn’t have money near the end – I had plenty – but rather, there was literally no one left who I wanted for two bucks. That’s the reason you see purchases like Phil Hughes for $3 and Vance Worley for $2. Spend it if you got it, right? Hell yeah I’ll bid you up on an injured Mike Carp – I still have twelve bucks left to spend on three negative-value players. No point in leaving dollars out there.
Favorite Buys
I was pleased to get Braun at $43, especially when six guys – Tulo ($49), Miggy ($49), Kemp ($46), Bautista ($46), Pujols ($45), Cano ($44) – went for more. I thought I got great value across my entire outfield, actually. Beltran is a health risk, sure, but I’ll take on that risk for $7 – upside is worth twice that, at least. I also love the flexibility Daniel Murphy provides in a deep CI/MI league like this. I’ll take him for four bucks any day.
Least Favorite Buys
Ted Lilly and Mike Carp are on the DL and I spent a combined $7 on the two. The league has five DL slots, so this isn’t a killer, but I’m certainly not thrilled. I knew Lilly was having issues when I bought him, but I was hopeful he wouldn’t end up on the DL. I’m also growing increasingly skeptical on Volquez. He was one of those I’ve-got-a-lot-of-money-left-so-I-might-as-well-pay-for-the-upside guys near the end of the auction.
Most Important Thing To Note
This is just the beginning. Drafting is certainly the most exciting component of the fantasy baseball season, but it’s not the most important. Any winning team I’ve had in the past has been based on in-season management. I enjoy the grind of the baseball season and I’m sure that by mid-season my team will look quite different from how it appears at this moment. Of course, I’ve never been up against such a knowledgeable group of competitors. I’m looking forward to see how my skills stack up. I’ll be sure to keep you posted.
I’m in a 8 X 8 league with W, L, ERA, WHIP, K, CG, HLDS, SVS
Based on Lynn’s performance, his age (24) and a decent Cardinals team . . .
Should I drop Lidge, Melancon, Peavy, Liriano or Zambrano for Lynn. Or do you expect that he’ll be in the ‘pen when Carpenter returns?
Also, how many starts should I wait on Samardzja b4 I consider him?
@Hats for Bats, I’m always in favor of dropping a fringy closer for a nice SP, but Lynn’s long term role is unclear. He needs a couple more good starts to lock down a spot when Carp returns. And even then, nothing’s certain.
Alright … can’t halt my urge to tinker …
a) Sit Garza (at Mil) for Harrison (at Minn)?
b) Prado or Freese (5 of 6 righties)?
c) Reimold or Duda (3 lefties including hamels and clee + stras)?
d) and for the true maniac move, thinking of playing Bernadina instead as #3 of the 4 choices above. 6 righties, playing for his roster spot w/Ankiel returning in a week.
Feel the need to jack up my steals, that’s why I’m favoring Reimold and Roger.
@jac, Start Garza, Freese, Reimold.
What a fn bloodbath for my pitchers this weekend. After watching Gallardo, Latos, Bumgarner, Scherzer and Liriano launch preemptive nuclear strikes on my ERA and WHIP i want to chop some heads. Liriano was a flyer so he is getting the boot but im torn on wheather to give Scherzer any leash. I remember him burning me last year quite a bit so i kinda don’t like him already. What say you, the voice of reason? Off with his head?
@MeanMachine, you can part w/ Liriano. Too early to cut Scherz.
how confident are you guys feeling on rolling NOVA out there vs. BAL tomm?
@Tony, not terribly confident.
Need a Farnsworth replacement: J.Guerra, B.Myers, J.Johnson, or Aceves (pts league, saves more important). What do you guys think?
Thanks!
@Jan, Aceves or Guerra
would you guys rather own Lance Lynn over Liriano or Nova?
@Tony, Lynn’s long term role is unclear, but if he shows another outing or two like yesterday’s, the Cards might have to keep him in their rotation when Carp returns.
Is Laroche a consideration for a bench spot in a 15 team league, off to a great start…
@nightpandas, Yes, he’s worth a flyer.
Someone just dropped Altuve and Aviles in my 14 team, mixed, 5×5 league. Either worth a pick up?
@@HuskyRump, Both, probably. Ultimately depends on who you’d be dropping.
@Scott Evans: Was thinking Aviles for Morel; Altuve for LaHair (I have Kendrys at 1B but was thinking of slotting LaHair into OF b/c this league gives points for DPT)
To Scott or anybody else. Would you drop Myers for Bard in a 10 man league? I think Bard is going to be closing in no time for that mess of a Red Sox bullpen.
@Fitz, if Bard gets that job he’d be far more valuable than Myers in a 10 team format. I can’t imagine Myers is gonna be worth all that much in shallow leagues.
@Everyone: What websites do you guys go to/check when you need to pick up another SP on the waiver wire ? I know about fantasy411 mlb’s blog but i need more sites to cross reference – And yeah the more websites/information on pitchers to gamble on the better – Please help me out guys !!!
@Anthony, there are so many… start with Grey’s daily roundups here. fangraphs.com/fantasy always has great stuff, the hardball times, too.
I don’t know if owning Marmol is quite worth it in one of my leagues. There are a ton of closers unrostered. Please help.
Keep running him out there or drop for Santiago, Francisco, Myers, Johnson, Broxton, or Melancon?
@Black Beard, I don’t like Samardzija, but that’s more to do with the Cubs than his stuff. He could turn into a decent deep league option. Re: Marmol, don’t quit on him yet, but if you have room don’t hesitate to scoop one or two of those FA closers.
@Scott Evans, thanks for the feedback. Knew what I was getting into with Marmol, in theory, but seeing it, in practice, is frightening.
I’m watching Samrdzija hit 97 in the ninth. I’ve heard in the past he can throw hard but his fastball is laser straight.
Have you seen anything from him that makes him a potential breakout this year?
@Black Beard, and he throws a 97 mph fastball right in the middle of the plate and gives up a 2 run jack to laroche.
BrUUUUUUUUUUUUce. That is all.
In a keeper league with 7 years left to go, I just put Fister on the DL. Should I pick up Flyod or Worely? I like Worely’s chances for the future, but Flyod could give me more quality start now.
@Brian, You’ll notice above that I own both. I think they have similar outlooks for this year. Worley has better upside for future. Floyds a nice guy to fill out innings.
@Scott Evans, ironically I was hoping you owned one or the other then it would have made my decision even easier. I went Worely, thanks man
Hey guys,
Sean Marshall or Javy Guerra for saves?
Thanks!
@Jp, Marshall
I’m in a dynasty league and I was just offered:
4 years Brett Lawrie-$10
1 year Stephen Strasburg
for
3 years Heyward-$15
3 years Hanson-$15
If Lawrie’s legit, I rape this trade. If not, then I’m in trouble. What are y’alls thoughts?
@cubbies299, Fair deal. I like your end better, though. I’m a Lawrie believer.
Rather have jesus montero or cozart?
@drew, Montero… although he’s not catcher eligible in yahoo just yet. It’s close at the moment, but he should pay off bigger in the long run.
Weekly H2H league, 3 OFs, 1 U. Need to pick 4 from McCutchen, Pence, Stubbs, Cuddyer, Butler, Lind, Bourjos, Cain, Rasmus. I’m leaning toward McCutchen, Pence, Stubbs, Cuddyer. What do you think? Thanks for the help.
@King of Nothing, McCutch, Pence, Stubbs & Butler
Yo Grey or Rudy, do you send Sherzer out there against the Red Sox today? He’s been hot this spring and historically terrible against the Sox. 1450 inning cap, Sherzer is my 5th starter (but might get promoted after MadBum and NatGio soiled themselves yesterday). Thanks for the help.
@Alcesto, I can’t speak for those fellas, but I’d start Scherz.
@Scott Evans, Of course you’d start him, look at your staff! Just kidding, nice team, you got great value on offense, even if it were only a 12 team league.
Man, its a tough call on Sherzer. The Sox got blanked last night, I expect they won’t today.
@Alcesto, So early that it doesn’t hurt to watch him pitch from your bench in order to feel him out. I’m doing just that with Floyd @ TEX & Hughes @ TB.
looks like a solid team. great value buys in the OF with Beltran, Markakis, and Cespedes.
i don’t love the pitching staff but solid drpth with masterson and colby at $3.
good luck!
@Rudy Gamble, Thanks, Rudy. Best of luck to ya with your teams, likewise.
Mauer for $14 is a pretty weak pick too
@Timmy Riggins, Certainly not a bargain. I felt obligated (perhaps unjustifiably) to grab a flashy catcher in this two-C format, and $14 was in-line with where I had Mauer projected. I don’t hate this pick, but I don’t love it either.
@Scott Evans, $14 doesn’t seem out of line with the price catchers were going for –
Carlos Santana $26
Mike Napoli $21
Brian McCann $19
Matt Wieters $17
Buster Posey $16
Alex Avila $11
Miguel Montero $11
@VinWins, I bought a $21 Napoli in 15 team mixed auction and instantly regretted. Brain fart I guess…
You and I both would have been better served with cheaper catching options and upgrading our corners or OF. That aside, I think this team has potential to be really strong.
@Scott Evans, If Murph stays healthy (BIG if), he can be Michael Young-lite. Question for you:
Cashner or Crain in a redraft league. Who would you speculate on for saves? I’ve got Crain now, but thinking of dropping him for Cashner. Street is always a pitch away from the DL and Cashner has been used in the 8th.
@3FingersBrown, “You and I both,” meaning Scott and I.
@3FingersBrown, Thanks for the love on the squad – we’re off to a nice start, too. Re: your Q, I like Cashner. Hard to say what the Sox have planned for the late innings, but you can use Cashner even if he’s not closing. He has the potential to break out as one of elite non-closing RP options. Love his arm.
@Scott Evans, I like Cashner and more importantly SD does too. He has “closer of the future” written all over him.
@3FingersBrown, absolutely
@VinWins, Yeah, I wasn’t trending outside the market w/ Mauer. Let’s hope he stays on the field & gets something like 530-550 PA. That’d be cool with me.
@Scott Evans, I fart in the general direction of catchers in a two catcher league :)
@Oregon Nut Cups, Ha! I noticed that… My projected values on all C’s were so inflated that I regretted not grabbing Buck & another $1 guy, each at $6 or $7 under value. There were a couple guys doing this, including back-to-back Blog Wars champ. Oh well.
@Scott Evans, Auctions make for some craziness, for sure. Snakes/Rounds make it easier to target, Auction just shows how much faith you have in one guy vs another person. You literally put your money where your pie hole is. Good luck this season!
@Oregon Nut Cups, and good luck to you in your Fantasy Gods campaign.
@Timmy Riggins, John Buck at $1 is already paying dividends
@Paul Wilson, Hell yes, my friend. Loving Buck for a buck.
