Razzballerz, it is another low-injury week, and I do not have enough hot gnarly gossip for you. So, we are going to talk about the passage of time: the pitch clock!
There is no argument the pitch clock has had an impact on the game. For instance, when I go get a beer at a game, three innings have passed by the time I make it back to my seat. Depending on how the game is going, that is time well spent.
Beyond my beer or game dilemma, when these injuries come in and out every week, they start to look familiar. Then less common injuries start to seem common (all of the HBP and comebackers), but it is pure speculation. The Athletic recently reported that there is “no direct statistical evidence” that major league pitcher injuries are becoming more common in relation to the pitch clock but that injuries may be coming. As more data becomes available, the other changes to the game will make it even murkier to understand the isolated effect, if there is one, of the pitch clock.
If you have time to spare this week, hit me up in the comments about how you have felt about the pitch clock (good, bad, or neutral) and any observations you have had.
As I mentioned, there were not many new serious injuries this week, but they may affect your roster! Let’s jump in.
Notable Injuries (Week of May 6-May 12)
Christian Arroyo (INF/OF, BOS)
Arroyo may not be a starter in your league, but I figure some of you have him as a utility piece depending on what kind of league you are in. Unfortunately, he is suffering from a strained hamstring.
The Arroyo injury is interesting because rookie Enmanuel Valdez will have more starts at 2B. In the majors, Valdez has slashed .317/.349/.463 in 43 PA. Comparatively, Arroyo has slashed .257/.295/.365 in 79 PA. Valdez needs some defensive improvements, but he might be appealing for some deep or dynasty leagues.
Feels like Enmanuel Valdez has flown under the radar a bit with so many guys breaking out:
11 Games – 38 PA
.324/.342/.486/.829
1 HR
3 2B
3/3 SB
6 RBI

Max Fried (SP, ATL)
Last week Braves SP Kyle Wright went down with a strained shoulder. This week Max Fried joins Wright on the IL because of a strained forearm. Both players will be out for months (think July if not more) with their injuries, and as I mentioned last week, the Braves internal options are limited (Dylan Dodd, Jared Shuster, and Mike Soroka).
If you are down, Nathan Eovaldi is hot right now. If Eovaldi is off the table in your league, Dane Dunning, who I wrote about last week, is still widely available.
Nathan Eovaldi last 3 starts:
— 25.2 IP
— 11 Hits Allowed
— 25Ks 3 BB
— 0 Runs Allowed
— 333 Pitches (224 Strikes)Unreal…#StraightUpTX pic.twitter.com/2ML7lgbuCl

Also, if you find yourself needing an RP, it is time for you to look at Yennier Canó who has a 0.00 ERA across 18.7 IP and is also possibly still available in your league. Unbelievable stuff.
Where Yennier Cano ranks among all qualified MLB RPs:
ERA: 0.00 (1st)
WHIP: 0.16 (1st)
FIP: 1.11 (4th)
bWAR: 1.7 (1st)
GB%: 76.5% (1st)
BAA: .054 (1st)
K%: 38.6% (7th)
BB%: 0.0% (1st)
Soft contact%: 35.3% (1st)
Hard contact%: 8.8% (1st)
SIERA: 0.78 (1st)pic.twitter.com/iz3ygCbPaC— Locked On Orioles (@LockedOnOrioles) May 11, 2023
Eloy Jiménez (OF, CWS)
George W. Bush misquoted that other quote and said “Fool me — you can’t get fooled again.” However, there were some folks who likely took Eloy Jiménez for another season. Karl Marx said “Religion is the opiate of the masses,” but in fantasy baseball, that opiate is hope. The hope hangover was already kicking in with a rather snoozy season for the seemingly perma-injured Eloy. Hope was definitely not enough for Eloy’s now-deceased appendix. Jiménez will be out about 3-5 weeks and returning with one less organ.
The White Sox are in trouble. Carlos Pérez was brought up from Triple-A, where he was slashing .272/.321/.553. However, this is not a replacement for Jiménez. Rather, Yasmani Grandal will now be the primary DH. The White Sox also have Oscar Colás as an option.
I don’t need to tell you anymore because you’re going to promise me that you are not going to rely on anything on this cursed team. There is a small chance Patrick Wisdom or Andrew McCutchen are available in your leagues.
Lane Thomas, the Nationals OF, may be a little more available. Thomas has been hot lately slashing .364/.382/.697 in the last seven days.

Drew Rasmussen (SP, TBR)
Despite the Rays’ early season success, many of their pitching injuries have me singing “I don’t know about you/but I’m feeling 22.” Drew Rasmussen joined the 60-day IL with a right strained flexor. He will be completely shut down from throwing at all until July.
Rasmussen joins pitchers Tyler Glasnow, Shane Baz, Jeffrey Springs, Pete Fairbanks, Andrew Kittredge, Shawn Armstrong, and Garrett Cleavinger on the IL.
Obviously, the Rays are going to need to figure out something here. Glasnow is back, but it is uncertain how reliable his health will be. So, the minors or a free agent could be an option. Taj Bradley is the obvious and most readily available resource, but there are many questions about his performance. Unfortunately, I am a little spooked in general about the Rays pitchers.
Taj Bradley is most definitely coming back up, but it’s been a very weird season for him to say the least
AAA – 16 IP, 11.25 ERA, 5.84 xFIP, 16.7K%, 11.5 BB%, .300 BABIP
MLB – 15.1 IP, 3.52 ERA, 2.76 xFIP, 38.3K%, 3.3 BB%, .313 BABIP
Hard to know what to expect from him https://t.co/5trPiKGkEk
