What is up party people? Sigh, another week, another promising young outfielder hits the IL. Jung Hoo Lee wasn’t lighting the world on fire just yet but there were signs he was about to take flight. Then he dislocated his shoulder in a collision with the wall and his timeline to return is uncertain, with the worst case timeline being the rest of the season. We should have some clarity in the coming days, but I’m fearful it will be a lengthy stay on the IL. So far he has been replaced in center field by Luis Matos who was a top prospect just a short time ago. He has big time potential but struggled in the majors last season which is why he’s been in AAA. Now that injuries to the rest of the Giants hitters have given him a chance to play every day, it’s up to him to put it all together and show off his talent. His numbers in AAA haven’t been great but he has hit the ground running since his call up and that makes him worth taking a shot on. Now let’s look at some other potential replacement options, starting with some guys from last week and then we’ll see who’s hot.
JJ Bleday – Solid numbers this week even without a power binge. That’s actually pretty encouraging because we know he can get on a run.
Jo Adell – The foretold breakout is upon us at last. His last week has been carried by his power. I mean, the man has 6 hits over that stretch and half of them have gone over the fence. Grab him now, if you still have the chance.
Jonny DeLuca – Playing time is still not assured and now that the Rays are healthier, it may be sporadic. Hope for the best, and the talent, but we have to wait and see how the playing time shakes out.
Jurickson Profar – I asked my friends (yes, they are totally real) if they thought he could hit 30 bombs this year while batting .300, they said no. If he hits those marks blame them, not me.
Willi Casto – Liked him for speed, but it turns out he has some pop and pretty solid average as well. I’m more interested in him now than I thought I would be.
Tommy Pham – You may not like him if he’s in your fantasy football league but he can help your fantasy baseball squad. Batting average is working for him although the extra base hits and speed haven’t been there. Those aspects of his game should both show themselves at some point.
Jake Bauers – It hasn’t been the prettiest but it looks like he will have regular at bats for the near future. He’s flashed some power and speed in the action he has seen so there is reason to be encouraged. He will need to bring his batting average up but deep leagues should take advantage and grab him.
Brenton Doyle – Half his games at Coors should boost his power/speed combo. He will need to get his strikeouts under control or it’s unlikely his .280 average will continue. At least he can offset that with some home runs.
Alec Burleson – Haven’t really heard a ton from him since the spring. I still like what he brings to the table. I’m watching him closely and/or grabbing him in deeper leagues.
