What a week here on the Prospect Podcast! Not only are we finishing up our pre-season preview with some of the top prospects and systems in the game, the MiLB games kicked off last Thursday, so we’ve had a week worth of looks. Including… live looks at the dynamic duo of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette. Lance and I begin the podcast with a detailed discussion of what we saw from Vladdy, Bo, Brendan Rodgers, and others, before diving into some news-makers from the first week of Minor League games. This all culminates in a spirited discussion of the unbelievably talented, and deep, San Diego Padres system. When I say deep, I mean it, this should’ve, could’ve, gone three hours. We start off with Fernando Tatis Jr., MacKenzie Gore, Michel Baez, and Luis Urias, before talking some Joey Lucchesi, Jeisson Rosario, Tirso Ornelas, Cal Quantrill, Franchy Cordero, and so many more. It’s an action packed hour and half of info. Finally, please make sure to support our sponsor by heading over to RotoWear.com and entering promo code “SAGNOF” for 20% off the highest quality t-shirts in the fantasy sports game. Thx Ralph!! Padres arel loaded. 2 trade scenarios in NL only obp league: Cesar Hernandez for Cargo or Cesar, Goldschmit, and Hader for Cargo, Rizzo, and Stratton. Which side and which trade scenario do you like better?
    Thx for all the prospect info, always in depth.

    I picked up Senzel, Have Chapman and Rendon.

    Offered Jose Quintana for Chapman. Which side ROS?

    Thanks!

    Pod was superr interesting. Listened to most of it to work.

    Please consider adding some time frame. Maybe letting listeners know from the 10 minute mark on we discuss Pads prospects including……

    SD has great prospects but I am worried about playing time in that outfield. It seems the Pads have 3 legit SS prospects.

    I think Renfroe currently feels like the odd man out. Of he was in Texas MIGHT be Joey Gallo like with less walks and higher average. Really shows its about playing time and team philosophy.

      @Mark:
      Will make note of this, Mark!

      Thanks for letting us know, always open to feedback, we want to make sure everybody enjoys the content and can pick out what they really want to listen to. Very good point.

      Agree on the SD depth, it’s crazy, especially at MI.

      I think Arias and some others are further off. That infield looks like Tatis at SS, Urias at 2B for the long haul to me. Maybe eventual move to 3B for Tatis, but I think he can stick at SS.

      Depth is never a bad thing for a club (maybe only in regards to prospect investing for us fantasy owners)!

    Wondering what your current thinking is with Yonny Chirinos? What did you think of him as a prospect? Does it seem like his stuff has made a leap forward? Do you think they give him a sustained chance to be a starter?

    Would you rather roster him in a 12 team mixed league or someone like Tyson Ross or Mike Minor?

    Thanks!

    • Lance

      Lance says:
      (link)

      @KCC26:
      Ralph probably has a better idea of him as a prospect than I do. I can’t say I knew much about him until he started kicking around circles recently.

      I think their initial intention was to piggy-back start him, but it looks like he could be more than that. Sinker looks great, splitter is funky too.

      I’m probably ranking them Minor-Chirinos-Ross rest of season, but I’m not expecting much innings-wise for Ross/Minor. Minor is intriguing because his velo has stuck out of the pen, I’m just not sure on how they stretch him out to 140ish if he stays in the rotation.

    I can listen to Padres prospect talk till the cows come home … and Rockies prospect talk (hitters version) ain’t no chopped liver either …

    At this moment, Luis Urias has 6 BB, 6 SO … what, even walks to strikeouts? What a bum! KIDDING — I LUV this guy!

    Luis Urias makes Rougned Odor’s approach at the plate look like John Daly’s grip-it-and-rip-it golf swing after one of Daly’s 6 month benders. If Odor is going to swing like Daly, can he at least swing it like a sober John Daly?

    Also, Gabe Arias has a howitzer arm? Thank you for that piece of prospect-intel. And then there’s Tirso Taters– hubba, freaking, hubba.

    Big thanks to you Fellas for the great work.

    Did I mention I could listen to Padres prospect talk till the cows come home?

      If you like this pod, you should really listen to the one where we talk about Padres— oh wait! (haha)

      Honestly wish we made this one a full episode, we had to speed through the end.

      Ha! on the Daly reference.

    Ralph,

    Hope all is well….

    15 team keep 11 obp and k/9

    My team is gonna be tough to do anything this year:

    1 Was offered: Vlad Jr, Sano, Kopech, Gardiner and a couple of 1st round picks for Sale, KSeager, Treinen, Beltre

    2 Give Gallo get Eloy and a pick

    3 Give Sale and Dejong and get Corey Seager and Darvish

    What do you think

    • Lance

      Lance says:

      @Nightpandas:
      Seems like you’re really looking to overhaul the squad here, I’m just going to give my vacuum thoughts on each trade independently, feel free to ask follow-ups, I’d be interested on Ralph’s thoughts on these too…

      1 – Sale is really tough for me to give up if you’re in win-now mode (which it seems like you could be). If you’re overhauling, I think it’s fine because I love Vlad-Kopech combo.

      2 – Win-now matters for me once again here, I’m going Gallo, I’m a big fan of his if you can take the average hit.

      3 – Seager/Darvish for me by a hair, it’s close, classic elite and decent for two top 75 players swap, pick your poison.

        @Lance: thanks Lance….

        Here’s my whole team,,,bats stink

        Gattis, Gurriel, Kingery, Devers, TAnderson, Gallo,Zimmer, Puig, GTorres, Franchy, Beltre, KSeager, Odor (dl), Belt, Dejong

        Sale, Morton, Castillo, Bauer, Chirinos
        Osuna, Treinen, Betances

    Ralph,
    GREAT PODCAST!!!!!!!
    Like the previews guy, I too love Padres prospect talk. I have a few of them and have more on my radar, but I am concern about getting too many players from one MLB team.

    I have MILB TV and every night before I go to bed I print the MILB schedule for the next day, I highlight my players and a few others I follow and check to see the ones that are televised. I especially like to watch the pitchers. I have enjoyed watching Buehler, Soroka and Wright so far. I hope some of my guys are going to start getting called up in the next couple months.

    I am thinking of taking 3B Welker next, he is kind of reminding me of a right handed Bryce Harper, he either walks or hit something hard somewhere. He may end up at 1B or a corner OF, if Colorado resigns Arenado.

    Can you please give me a one line comment as to what you have seen of my players so far this year?

      Homework! I’ll do my best on a few of these. Phrasing these as my general thoughts as I haven’t seen them all on MiLB.tv (Ralph might be able to add context if he has).

      *Qualifying all these stats with the small sample tag, however.

      1 Trammell – Great start in A+, BBs up, Ks down
      2 Cordero – all about bringing down the swing-and-miss, I think he’s more platoon than anything, big leg kick, upright stance going to keep that K rate in the high 20s for me.
      3 Tatis – Not the best start at AA, seems to be carrying over from small stint last year. A+ to AA jump is tough.
      4 Eloy – Wait for DL, should be fine.
      5 Riley – Looked great in spring, I think he’s up this year, makes an impact.
      6 Urias – nothing has changed, crazy hit tool.
      7 Kiebert? AA assignment is pretty nuts to me, aggressive, just not sure on the bat, defense is superb.
      8 Dominic? Blocked at ML level right now, he’ll hang in AAA and be fine

      1 Reyes – would bet he’s bullpen for 2018.
      2 Buehler – Good AAA start, like STL, just too much depth, think he’s a pen arm for 2018.
      3 Soroka – should be up this year, lottttt of people in love with him, command is nuts. If Ks stick, he could be the best SP callup of the year.
      4 Wright – too early to tell, looks ok so far
      5 Alcantara – still like, want to see at ML level in starting role for extended period, needs reps more than anything
      6 Gore – yum
      7 Urias – no idea here, shoulders are weird, we need a Urias prayer circle

        @Lance: just want to add on to Soroka, the dude was 19 in AA walking no one last year,
        then looked great in MLB spring camp, now touching 97(!) with the fastball all of a sudden
        and first 2 starts in AAA as a 20yr old lookin’ sexy as hell (1bb/ 13k 10ip)
        plus the dude sounds the part:

          Love this video. I may be one of the few that actually looks at stuff like this on prospects. Another young guy that carries himself extremely well is Royce Lewis. He always impresses me.

          I’m amped to see Soroka at the major-league level.

        Thanks Lance,
        That was great. I am looking forward to see this trickling in one or two at a time over the next couple years.

        I have four picks right after the MLB draft. Can you give me your top five or six picks at this time? I love 3B Nolan Gorman and LHP Mathew Liberatore.

        Thanks, Jose

          Sure. Keep an eye on my site BigThreeSports.com and here for my eventual draft ranks.

          Just going on player talent and not who is going to get drafted where, I think my five right now would be…

          1 Gorman
          2 McLanahan
          3 Mize
          4 Kelenic
          5 Liberatore

          Lot changes quickly on this front, so I reserve the right to move some guys around!

    Would you trade Moncada for Trammell and Lucchesi in a keeper league?

    • fletch f. fletch says:

      @fletch f. fletch: Nvm, ended up moving Moncada for Buxton straight up.

      • Lance

        Lance says:
        (link)

        @fletch f. fletch:
        Would probably hold Moncada in that first scenario, but like the swap for Buxton, still have hope there even if it’s all speed based.

        • fletch f. fletch says:
          (link)

          @Lance: Thanks Lance. I hope MIN is able to start batting Buxton higher in the order. Thinking (maybe wishfully) that his slow start is somewhat attributed to the cold weather up North. Of course, the same thing could possibly be said for Moncada, but that 50% K rate combined with the fact we have seen very little of the base stealing ability Moncada demonstrated in the minors had me willing to move on to Buxton.

          • Lance

            Lance says:
            (link)

            @fletch f. fletch:
            Going to be tough to bat him high when he’s swinging and missing this much unfortunately.

            They’re probably fine with leaving him low and letting him run around on the bases cause the guys around him aren’t that great.

            He’s gotta earn his way back up. Still super young, I have hope.

            I think you have a higher floor because of Buxton’s steals. Even with the K concerns on both sides.

            Hopefully it works out!

    Great stuff! In dynasty would you drop Wacha for any of: Gohara, Luchessa, Pivetta, T. Williams, Matz or V. Velasquez? Have an outside chance of competing this year too. Thanks.

    • Lance

      Lance says:
      (link)

      @David:
      This is interesting.

      First I’d ask whether Wacha actually is your worst SP. Seems like he could be with the depth of waivers here, but just wanted to make sure.

      I like what I’m seeing from Pivetta. If you’re win now, I might consider it.

      Gohara is right there for me too, but I want to see how he is past this injury.

      Ideally, I’d try to find a way to hold Wacha and add Pivetta.

    I have a few coming off the dl and have to make some cuts. I’m in a deep dynasty. 14 team. 40 player. You can keep everyone. 14 player minor league. Out of this group who is your bottom 3.. Luis Garcia, estury, mondesi, aj reed, wander Javier, yusneil diaz, Khalil lee, Alex kirilloff, Adonis Medina, Mitch white, Jeff Hoffman, Andrew Heaney, Carl Edwards and Addison reed.. I have a win now roster but love my minors. It’s hard to part w any. Thanks for any help I can get. Can’t make my mind up on who to cut.
