My family never thought I’d amount to anything, yet, here I am laying on my couch, saving the world. You’re welcome, world! Which is also what I scream every time I wash my hands. Today in quarantine news, I watched Curb Your Enthusiasm and mentioned to myself, “It’s weird to think of Larry David as touchy-feely, but he is just so casually shaking other people’s hands.” Then I laughed to myself and thought, this must be what it was like to be Howard Hughes, as I peed into a milk bottle. The top 40 outfielders for 2020 fantasy baseball were updated with new projections for a 100-game season. With this series, I will take a look around the 2020 fantasy baseball rankings to see if there’s any differences now that we might only play a 100-game season. Projections have been updated on all my positional rankings. Anyway, here’s thoughts on the top 40 outfielders for 2020 fantasy baseball with the new Corona timeline:

22. Joey Gallo – I’m still not in on Gallo, even with the corona timeline. I expect some push back on this, because Gallo is the type who could hit 30 homers in 100 games. I’ve attempted to distance myself from my early March thoughts on Gallo, and not just socially. “Did you just sneeze into your elbow? You sicko!” That’s me to my reflection. I tried to distance myself from myself because I didn’t love Gallo in The First Preseason, what I’m now calling it. I wrote a Joey Gallo overrated post in the TFP, and some of it was contingent on his wrist, and how healed he would be. It was not 100% contingent on that, though. His new park is going to be better for pitchers, and worst for his strikeouts. Now, with so much time off from seeing MLB pitching, it’s not going to help his strikeouts. Gallo could very well hit .190 in a 100-game season. Right now, Steamer hitter projections have Gallo hitting .223 with 71 hits in 317 ABs. Just a mere ten less hits, or one less hit every ten games, and his average is .192. Everything about average is going to be exaggerated in a short season, and Gallo could surprise with a high BABIP and hit for a good average in a short season, but, if we’re to assume everything will be magnified to who players are vs. who they are not, it doesn’t bode well for Gallo surprising with an Ichiro-type year. But, yes, one more caveat, if the Rangers play all their games in Arizona, that could change my thoughts a bit on him, too.

23. Tommy Pham – Exactly the type that I would avoid in a Corona timeline. He’s not good–okay, some think he is good–but he’s even worse when you think about how he’s merely good when over a 130-ish game seasons. It’s too bad we don’t have an example of what Pham could do over a 100-game season. All we have is his stats from 2018 that are over a 98-game season when he went 67/14/41/.248/10 in 351 ABs, and that was when his legs were two years fresher-slash-younger. Go back and look again at his stats over 351 ABs. Please. I implore you, and I barely even know what implore means.

28. Michael Conforto – I moved him back up to where he was before his Spring Training injury. Now that I think about it, Coronavirus is like the entire nation has an oblique injury. Will we be back in three weeks? Two months? Will it linger until October? Shrugs! Maybe the nation needs to see Dr. James Andrews. “Hello, this is Dr. James Andrews’s office, and we’re not in right now because the doctor has a hundred million dollars from elbow surgeries and is in Barbados. If this is urgent, go see a Mets doctor. Haha, kidding.”

35. Franmil Reyes – I’m sorry I never wrote the Franmil Reyes sleeper post. Well, I did write it, I just never published it. I wrote it back in November. You remember November, right? It was sixteen years ago, but somehow right before the month of March. (However, Coolwhip did give you his Franmil Reyes fantasy.) Franmil looks even better in a short season, though I have big rose-colored glasses energy for Franmil. I love everything about him. How did he get so far into my special heart zone? I think I might just crush hard on giant men. Not Giants, heaven forbid. For outfielders, Franmil ranks as the tenth highest for homers in Steamer’s hitter projections with a .259 average. As I keep saying, averages are going to be even more mercurial than usual in a short season, but, even though Franmil hit .249 last year, he is actually a big slugger who could surprise with a halfway decent average. Last year’s .279 BABIP was low for him, and he had next-to-no issue with Ks in the minors. Franmil is on the verge of becoming a superstar and is so close to getting his name scrawled all over my Trapper Keeper.

Think I’d draft Sano before Reyes. Have my last OLC draft next wednesday. Should be interesting. Did 10 drafts between late January and early February. Wonder how many of the same players I’ll be drafting and how many I won’t be. My recollection is both Sano and Reyes were going around 120 with Conforto a little earlier. Too bad Sale, Severino, and Syndergaard aren’t still there for others to draft.
In Pham’s case, a move from Petco to Arizona is an upgrade.

Just checked on their adp’s from March 1 to date. Sano 112. Reyes 117. Conforto 131. Haven’t drafted any of them in 10 on line drafts, 3 cut lines, and 1 draft champions. Don’t envision me taking them at those adp’s.

Awesome now top40 for OF report!!!

    a. Franmil lookin’ good, but I didn’t draft him. Da! Maybe there’ll be more gems to be had in tomorrow’s top60 for OF, right?

    b. I’m off Conforto even though I was on him for 2 years in a row, maybe that’s why I’m off him. He’s so boring and if you don’t play him for all his games played you’re losing value. He’s the kind of player that has value from a full season of games. Guessing when he will get hot or stay hot is worse that Russian roulette with a loaded gun.

    c. MLB quote of the day for May 17, 1969

Pham – raspberry lips! Solid talent, too much risk between health and vision. I like his hitting witch where ever the Padres play.

Franny! He seems to have struggled with transitioning. To the AL, he’s still a he. Babip went up to .301 but avg dropped to .237. K-rate increased too. Agree with above going Sano before Franny. But could see grabbing him say round 12 of he’s still on the board.

    22) I took a chance on Gallo in a league I felt really strong with batting average with my earlier hitter picks (Bellinger, Bregman,Martinez, Alvarez) and was going for the .215 avg with a chance to put me way out ahead with home runs.
23, 28, 35) Didn’t really have an opinion on these guys because I was more interested in other guys being picked in 12 team drafts in this range like Laureano, Robles,Robert, Ozuna or waiting a bit to get Antana, Biggio, or Gurriel Jr.
I want to be higher on Conforto then I am because I think he is an extremely gifted hitter that never gets locked in for reasons unknown.

You’ll get 11-12’s in all hitting cats. But doesn’t pitching count ? Pitching has to go perfect for you to have a shot of winning your league. Don’t mean to be harsh. Short season so perhaps I’m wrong. I guess Glasnow/ Gray/ Lynn/EdRod/ Odorizzi/ Houser can work. But 1 point for saves.

This predated Motown. My guess is that the group was either from Philly or Brooklyn. Speaking of Motown, met Eddie Kendricks of the Temptations…great guy. Saw Little Stevie Wonder at Forest Hills Tennis Stadium when he had just turned 16, with the Supremes and the Temptations. Aug. 20, 1966, singing Fingertips Parts 1 and 2. I went to Forest Hills High School, in Queens, N.Y.
Saw the Beatles 1st american concert there in 1964. So many great concerts. Bee Gees, Johnny Mathis, Sammy Davis Jr., Simon and Garfunkel (Paul went to F.H.H.S.), as did Michael Landon. Bob Dylan, The Who. It was a precursor to the Fillmore East where we saw everyone, during my college years of 1965-1969. What a great place and time to grow up. We had no money, but was very fortunate.
Used to go to Forest Hills Tennis Stadium to see the U.S. Open, Unlike today, you couldn’t hear a pin drop. Saw Laver, Rosewall, Newcombe, Ashe, Althea Gibson, Stan Smith, Pancho Gonzales, Ilie Nastasi……was the place to go in the the’60’s. Tell your mom how lucky she was to grow up in those times. Music, movies, books, theatre, and baseball all were golden.

I have Abreu, Olson, Bell and even Muncy who can play 1B who I have at 2B or UTIL. I think Bell might be underrated going into this year, because his underlying metrics supported what he did. I also read somewhere he was dealing with an injury in the 2nd half that may have contributed to his production decline at that time.

That being said, I have a couple of trade offers on the table that want Bell that involve SP from a pitching rich team who needs offense at 1B.

    1. I get Flaherty for Bell and Lance Lynn.
    2. I get Castillo for Bell.

I think I should move Bell, but which deal would you take. I like Lynn, but there is ratio risk with him.

      1. I’d take Flaherty

      2. It’s fair, I’d want Castillo

      • Play Ball says:
        (link)

Leaning Flaherty over Castillo even though I would also be giving up Lynn. I’m concerned about my ratios in a small league. I have 6 SP. The top 3 are Clev, Corbin and Giolito. The others, could have ERA’s in high 3’s near 4 and WHIPS around 1.20-1.25. Even Giolito could be one of them. Castillo has a delivery that could cause inconsistency and his ratios may go up from last year too.

Grey, I need you to turn the key for me. Keep Lynn for pitching depth and just move Bell for Castillo or take Flaherty being the most dominant and safer option for counting stats and ratios for both?

Thanks Grey! I’m gonna be torn on this one (I have plenty of time to think this one over lol)

I guess the only other context I should have added to that which is giving me pause, is I don’t really need Alonso as I own Bell, Muncy and Evan White (and I know I can sell one of them to prob gain something else back).

Robert is obviously the big return here where I am gaining a ton of steals over Yordan. I guess my fear is missing on Yordan maybe being like a second coming of a Pujols like bat (obviously huge what if there) but what he did was beyond impressive in a short sample.

2 new entrants for the 30 homer discussion that I don’t think were mentioned yesterday: Alvarez and Cruz. Again, this is just for fun so who cares. Might be difficult depending on inter-league play…. just wanted to throw those ones out there.

Also, who knows if Tommy La Stella continues his TORRID pace from last year! hahaha

OK, time to read your post. brb

I’m off Gallo in Roto just because the AVG sink is too much to make up for in the top-100 of drafts, IMO. But I’m not totally off the player. Drafted him in a points best ball, as I told you a few days ago. Park doesn’t really *worry* me for someone like him. But it does make me like your boy Lynn a bit more.

You implored me on Pham — so here I am imploring! I’ve owned him the last two years, but no shares so far this year. Always getting like a Laureano before him–who is just a better, younger version of him–sort of like how Cougs thinks about baby seal vs Grey Erotic. HEY NOW! Calm down baby seal, you filthy animal.

Were we talking about Pham? Oh yeah, sorry, dozed off looking at his stats. Got carried away with all the erotic talk. Pham is a boner kill! Would only really implore on him in an OBP league.

BTW! You left out Pham’s *awesome* 39 games w/ the Rays in 2018. How convenient! He helped win me a ship w/ those 39 tasty games. Flags fly forever! I also had Yelich on that team — wonder who helped me more? Hmm…

Pham ended last year strong, too. Unclear why that’s been a pattern the last two years for him, and what that implies for this year. See, I’m imploring, just as you asked!

He’s got nagging injury risk, a crappy hitters park, and old legs. I’d take him if he fell a round or two, but that ain’t happening.

Conforto — I am out for now. Was liking him in early draft SZN — then you told me to look at his AVG — and I was like, yep, Grey’s right again! FML knows what’s up! Just don’t want to deal with all that shiz you mentioned. Plenty of other dudes there I want to own and haven’t been able to get yet, like OZUNA! Think I’d also take Schwarbs over him straight up (maybe even Frans too), but he goes a few rounds later. Usually find myself getting pitching there, or the last available speed guys who don’t kill you elsewhere — Rosario, Edman, Mercado.

Franmil! Pure sex! You wrote the sleeper post in our hearts, Grey. You have BDE for Franny!

You even pulled out the SAT vocab word–mercurial–for the Fran blurb. That’ll get heads turning.

Was there another person who sang Layla other than on American Idol ? Now the acoustic version is practically an entire different song. Saw Clapton numerous times in college, but in high school, saw the Cream at Cafe a Gogo in Greenwich Village. Maybe 200-250 people. Richie Havens was the opening Act, sitting on a chair. Cream came out, Clapton, Bruce, and Baker. Ginger playing the drums with a joint in his mouth. I was a senior in high school, and got high only after I graduated, and that night is embedded in my memory, as so many events were from many years ago.

The Franmil/Schwarb comparison keeps coming up around me. Here’s where I see Franmil being the one to target first, and if you miss on him Schwarber is nice conselation prize, though if its an OBP league Schwarb is slightly higher.

I think I touched on it some indirectly in my sleeper post, but I’ll illuminate it more: They basically had the same season last year, except Franmil did it while underperforming the xStats and with a bad Launch Angle that caused an obscene amount of GBs yet haivng top tier elite sexy stats in barrel%, hardhit%, EV, EV+, etc. Schwarber on the otherhand was up there on many of those stats too but was not “cheated” and his batted ball profile lines up. He seems like a safer finished product now. But Franmil looks to be only tapping the surface so his ceiling is higher, he just needs to get more balls in the air. elevate and celebrate!

My boy Coolwhip showing up in the baby seal ramblings, love it!!

Yeah, just to be clear, for me it’s Schwarbs 1A and Franmil 1B. I own both of them in various leagues. But have yet to make my fantasy of owning both on the same team come true, yet.

We’re mostly in agreement here. I prefer the product that is closer to be finished, as you so eloquently put it. Here is my rebuttal:

          – WRONG! hahahaha, owned! OK, baby seal is tipsy, excuse his RUDE behavior, Coolwhip.

          Here is the real rebuttal:

          1) Using Sexy Mike Trout as your profile pic is unfair and I demand the competition be leveled!

          2) Now that the most important part of the argument is out of the way, please allow me to dive into the minutia.

          3) Swing change on Schwarbs is pretty much the most important aspect of why I prefer him. His K% and AVG improved DRASTICALLY once the change was made. Was finally able to hit LHP too. Went from a league average player to ELITE. All the underlying metrics support this, too, and early in the Spring it looked like he was holding onto those GAINZ.

          4) I HATE guys who are AVG sinks, so naturally, I was kind of meh on both early in draft SZN. But Schwarbs is not as much of an AVG worry for me anymore. I think Franmil has more power, but the difference is fairly negligible, IMO. So the AVG upside is the biggest difference.

          5) Franny is SUPER streaky. No me gusta super streaky. Unless we’re talking about Old School, in which case, I say, “WE’RE GOING STREAKING!” He also had the “best shape of his life” thing going for him in Feb. – but do you think he’s still crushing iron and broccoli nowadays — or crushing Cheetos and Doritos post COVID-19? Hmmmm… try to argue that one Sexy Mike Trout!

          6) I could say more but that’s probably enough. Just look at some video on his batting stance change. Pretty different.

Baby seal wins again! Thanks for playing!

            1) For what its Werth I mostly agree with you too, Schwarber was clearly a different cat in the 2nd half, I should know as i benefited from it all the way to victory twice… but i’m bored, so here we are.

            2) Whenever I see you post a brick wall of text, I always try to skim it over. I think to myself, by law of averages alone, somewhere within those ramblings there has to be something entertaining I can glean from it.

            3) You’re the one that self-identifies as an immature marine mammal. Don’t balme your choices on me ;-)

            4) I suppose its drafting strategy, after pick 100-120ish I’m looking for upside. And like I said they basically had the same season last year, with Franmil running at like 10% efficiency and bad luck. Imagine, if he takes any developmental steps at all this year, and any improvement in LA, swing profile and he could be Pete Alonso part 2: Oso Negro de Reyes.

            5) So the average drain thing… I don’t think theres as big a gap between them as maybe you think. If Reyes gets neutral luck he’s a .265-.270 hitter with zero improvement. If he improves at all or gets BABIP luck in his favor he could easily be a .285 hitter or better. Like you aptly pointed out, Schwarber fixed his swing mechanics etc and rallied to the power of Franmil. If Franmil takes any steps forward at all, finds more gaps, improves a 9.5 avg LA to 12 or to 15 like Schwarber… we are looking at Pure, Uncensored, National Geographic, Joe-exotica Tiger Sex.

            6) Steamer projections for them are essentially the same: looks like they buy Scharbers improvement but think Franmil stays exactly the same… once again, sex. pure sex.

But I should watch some tape, since there isn’t a whole lot better to do these days.

    Grey,
Got to thinking about a fantasy league I played in a few years ago. 5×5 with the usual categories but you had to choose a player from every team while taking 2 players from 2 different teams.
For example, you could choose Belli and Beuhler from the Dodgers and Bieber and Lindor from the Indians.2 teams down,28 to go.
Of course you could pick any team to take the 2 players from. The interesting thing with this is different managers could pick some of the same players-it doesn’t matter. You could play with 10 teams,15 teams or a 100 even. What would be the chances that 2 managers would have the exact same team, maybe 1 in a million I don’t know.
You use the basic 1 catcher,MI and CI, 5 OF and 9 pitchers. That leaves you with a 9 player bench because there are no pickups or trades during the season.
Believe me it’s harder than it looks.
    Please lmk what you think.
