The crazy analytics that the Rays have that no one else has: Pinpointing what players are good at and reenforcing that some players only do what they’re good at. For unstints, they’ll tell someone like Drew Rasmussen (7 IP, 0 ER, 1hit, zero walks, 8 Ks, ERA at 0.00) “pitch well,” and only “pitch well.” Crazy, right? Sometimes they’ll say to a hitter, “Hit well.” That has never been done before by a Major League Baseball team. One time they said to Vidal Brujan, “Be terrible,” and what do you know? What did he do? I’m gonna give you one guess here. He was terrible! It’s analytics like this that allow the Rays to save money too. The Rays received a bill from their travel department and were like, “This is way too much money to travel to games,” so they said to Manuel Margot, “Fly the plane,” and that’s what he did. Analytics, that’s what this is. So, I went to look to see if Drew Rasmusen had a sleeper post written by me, but he didn’t. Guess I merely loved him vs. wrote him up. Wanna know how much pitching there is in the majors? Rasmussen has a 2.96 ERA in 243 1/3 IP in his career. Yeah, but you have to draft a top starter. Mmkay. Anyway, here’s what else I saw this weekend in fantasy baseball:

We are merely eight games into the 2023 season and have learned a lot about what we can expect this season.  For starters, that lack of steals we have seen in past seasons is long gone with the rule changes going forward.  This means that players that derive value from speed will have more than ample opportunity to contribute.  We are also reminded that injuries are a reality of our game that will drive any fantasy manager crazy as we see players like Jose Altuve and Michael Harris tumble down the rankings.  Finally, we are rewarded for our eternal hope in the prospecting of our fantasy teams through players like Jordan Walker and Corbin Carroll.  If the first week of the fantasy season has told us anything, it is that we are in for a fun ride and with that a lot of opportunity for the savvy fantasy owner.  Time to break down the top 100 hitters for the rest of the 2023 fantasy baseball season.

I’d be lying to you if I said I was satisfied with last week’s streamers. We had a couple of pitchers absolutely pummelled, but it felt like that happened to every pitcher across the league. My ERA and WHIP are laughably bad in some leagues, but almost every fantasy manager is dealing with the same […]

Happy Easter! I’m currently watching a bunny and a hot dog run along the outfield warning track in the Guardians and Mariners game. Pretty typical afternoon, minus the bunny.

The eggs that interest me most at the moment are the zeros I’m watching Tanner Bibee post in his Triple-A debut. My favorite part was the fifth inning, when Bibee gave up two bloop hits to open the frame but closed it out without giving an inch or breaking a sweat. He cruised through five shutout innings on 78 pitches.

Welcome back to the weekly waiver wire/FAAB article! Can you find replacements for the rash of new injuries to the likes Eloy Jimenez, Mitch Haniger, Max Fried, and Robbie Ray with Joey Gallo, Ji-Hwan Bae, and Seth Lugo? Is the backend of your roster still suffering after your drunken inattention caused you to throw value […]

Eloy Jimenez has all the talent in the world, doesn’t he? When he’s healthy and “on” he often reminds me of the great Manny Ramirez – loose, smooth, and confident. But can Eloy ever stay on the field with any consistency at this point? This week it’s a hamstring injury – always a giant red […]

Perhaps it’s the constantly ticking pitch clock causing me anxiety and doubt but the Pittsburgh Pirates, yes those Pirates aka the 1979 World Champs have now won four in a row and that’s almost entirely due to free-agent-to-be Bryan Reynolds. Reynolds was 3-for-5 with his MLB leading fifth home run Friday night along with 6 […]

Welcome back to another installment of Top Dynasty Keepers. That waiver wire in fantasy baseball is now on fire as players are making adds and drops in reaction to the first week of the season.

This week we are going to take a look at two second basemen who play in the National League Central Division – Brice Turang of the Milwaukee Brewers and Ji Hwan Bae of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Road to The Show

Turang had an outstanding prep career in California, leading the Brewers to select him with the 21st overall pick in the 2018 draft. Entering the season as the No. 4 prospect in the Brewers system, Turang entered this season as the Brewers’ fourth-ranked prospect and was ranked as high as the 88th best prospect by Baseball America and 96th by MLB.com prior to the 2021 season before falling out of the Top 100.

Given a chance to earn a spot on the Opening Day roster this spring, Turang did so and is off to a solid start. Now, he is starting to get love from fantasy players as he is now rostered in 13.2% of ESPN leagues, an increase of 11.9% over the last seven days, and in 27% of Yahoo leagues.

Bae, who hails from South Korea, originally signed with the Atlanta Braves in 2017 but was declared a free agent after the fallout from Atlanta’s international signing violations. The Pirates swooped in and signed Bae in the spring of 2018 for $1.2 million. Unlike Turang, Bae is not getting as much love from fantasy owners as he is owned in 2.3% of ESPN leagues, though that is up two percent over the last seven days. In Yahoo leagues he is rostered in 19% of leagues.

Now that we know a little more about Turang and Bae, let’s breakdown each player.

What’s happening, Razzball nation?! It’s been a predictably wacky first week of baseball, and I for one already feel like I could use a vacation. We’ve had a tough start for some heavily drafted pitchers, but I’m trying to keep the faith that things will even out eventually. In a few leagues where I had […]
