Shohei Ohtani (1-for-2, 2 RBIs, hitting .301) hit his 22nd homer to tie for the MLB lead, and he tossed 6 IP, 2 ER, 7 baserunners, 3 Ks, ERA at 3.29, vs. the Rangers in Texas, one MLB’s best teams, and the Win. Are there enough superlatives for Ohtani? Let’s try, he’s the best baseball player ever. Good place to start. It’s unfair to compare different eras, because things were different 100 years ago when Babe played. Things were different 20 years ago when Bonds was in his heyday. Speaking of which, besides those two, there was Say Hey, there was Hammerin’, there was–Rickey knows you’re not forgetting Rickey–There was Rickey! None needed their full name mentioned. You knew who I meant. None pitched as well as Ohtani is pitching. Babe’s the only one to even give that a go, and we know when he was an elite hitter, he wasn’t also a pitcher. Ohtani sent a ball 443 feet the opposite way last night with ease, has hit six homers in seven games, and has 105 Ks in 82 IP, which is third in strikeouts. Absurd. There are no superlatives. He is the superlative. Superlative Ohtani. Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:

Grey doesn’t feed me bananas if the title to my piece isn’t witty and funny. So, naturally I’m a skinny monkey but I try, and I wanted to go with an Indiana Jones theme with Short Round yelling Doctor Jones for this one. Something something about hidden treasure and discovery, but then I ran across a clip of Amy from The Big Bang Theory ruining Raiders of the Lost Ark and now my world ceases to have meaning. But I’m a “professional”, so the show must go on. Nolan Jones of the Colorado Rockies isn’t quite a hidden treasure, as he was a top prospect and is being started in NFBC leagues, but he’s still only 21.8% owned in ESPN leagues and has been on quite the heater. Let’s dig in.
Please, blog, may I have some more? It’s almost at the half-way mark of the season, so it’s a good time to take a step back from your team, adjust your glasses, look at what you need – and then find the patsy in your league who still simply prorates stats or believes that the first half of the baseball season dictates how the rest will unfold. We who have lived longer than we would like to admit, yet are grateful for the wisdom and the greater community of humanity time has bestowed, recognize rubes like a man born on the bayou can tell an alligator from a soggy log.
Please, blog, may I have some more? What is up party people? We’ve got a new star in the sky. Corbin Carroll has been putting on a clinic. I was very intrigued by him, and I liked him but I will admit he was outside my top 100. Certainly didn’t see him as a top 10 option, but that’s where he is and honestly I’m not sure I can see him really slowing down. He has been doing everything you want from a points league player (power, average and speed). I know I’ve said speed doesn’t help in points but it is a nice bonus. For the love of god, do not sell high, he is about to be first round pick next season.
Please, blog, may I have some more? It’s unlucky season in fantasy baseball right now. We have official and terrible news on players like Lance McCullers, Vinnie Pasquantino, Yordan Alvarez, Chris Sale, and Jazz Chisholm this week. There are no less than five dozen players on the MLB injured list right now. With the dog days of summer officially upon us and […]
Please, blog, may I have some more?Shohei Ohtani is really good at baseball. Everyone has seen the Tungsten Arm O’Doyle joke by now about how each day Ohtani and Mike Trout achieve some fantastic feat, and then the Angels still lose the game. Is there such a thing as a post-meme sleeper? Ohtani continues to pile up outrageous stats. Going into […]
Please, blog, may I have some more?In the biz, we call this an “In Appreciation Of” post. This is in appreciation of Tildaddy. The one and only: Ronald Acuña Jr. (4-for-8, 3 runs, 4 RBIs and a double slam (14, 15) and legs (29), hitting .333). Tildaddy says you are done with your chores! Scientists should get together Ronald Acuña Sr., Fernando Tatis Sr., Bobby Witt Sr., Michael Harris I and other former players, who have elite MLB sons, and let them study them. Like the movie, Concussion, but call it Cushion Pushin’. Tildaddy is running away with the top spot on the Player Rater, and–Well, one of his home runs yesterday went 461 feet and it looked like he was barely swinging. Put that together with a guy who might have 45 steals by the All-Star Break, and we’re looking at a possible 40/70 season. I just nearly fainted. I need to sit down. Sits in a hole labeled “People who faded Acuña in the preseason.” Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:
Please, blog, may I have some more?Dynasty baseball is always complicated. The winners tend to allocate their roster spots most effectively, and this time of year especially, each spot is gold. With short-season leagues underway in Florida and Arizona, new names are popping into the newsfeed all the time. These two remaining short-season “leagues” have inherited the levels left behind by the recent minor league purge, so one could argue they matter more than they ever have. On the other hand, the pitching and defense is perhaps too haphazard to help us sort the hitters. Same goes double for the Dominican Summer Leagues. Also, it’s only been a week, and everyone is telling everyone else to hold their horses while filling their own FAAB runs with DSL hitters like Atlanta OF Luis Guanipa and Guardians SS Welbyn Francisca. And that’s where we’ll close this post: circling some names making waves in the dynasty-verse.
Let’s take it from the top first though. Big news of the night has to be Giants OF Luis Matos, who homered in his first at bat and got pulled from the game after his second. He’s hitting .398 with seven home runs and six steals in 24 games at Triple-A Sacramento. This might be a drill but does not feel like a drill. San Francisco is 35-and-32: good enough to make the playoffs if they started today. Hard to make a strong case against promoting Matos. I added him in two leagues yesterday: a ten-teamer and a twelve. Both redraft leagues. Chasing that lightning.
Please, blog, may I have some more?Summertime! Time to tidy up the old ranks. This week is first base, next week is third. Reminder, I’m trying to predict what they WILL do. If you want rankings of what’s happened already, there’s a player rater for that. There’s also a projected rest-of-season tool that I used but since I’m not AI (or […]
Please, blog, may I have some more?Razzball nation! We’ve got a bit of a computer nerd pun as our title today for those that observe such things in the land of SAGNOF. Some of you might not remember those old dial-up internet days with the screeching and dinging of phone connections to get you live on the ‘world-wide web’. Trust […]
Please, blog, may I have some more?Mitch Haniger fractured his forearm on a pitch, which was his most solid hit this year. Giants’ beat reporters are saying Luis Matos is being called up. Luis Matos being called up is fun. I like fun. Transitive! I like Luis Matos. He had hit six homers in the last six MiLB games. Total damage in the minors: 9/15, and he was hitting .396 in Triple-A. Can I get a giddy up, pardner? Itch said two days ago he was on his Prospect Stash List. Itch said previously, after Matos was coming off a disappointing previous year, “The premium bat speed remains. He just needs to develop better plate discipline. He has the hands to make contact with most pitches, so he swings at most pitches. That has to change. Development is not linear. He’s got time, and I might do time if I find where Grey lives.” Okay, honestly, I’m scared. So, I grabbed Matos in my shallowest leagues. He’s got power and speed, and he’s crazy hot. Let’s see how far it takes him. Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:
Please, blog, may I have some more?Welcome back Razzers to another Top 100 Outifelders, I’m just going to dive into the player updates this week as I made several updates throughout my rankings in a bit of a shuffle-up, let’s get it! Nolan Jones – Who would have thought that the land where all prospects go to die would be the […]
