Even if you draft one or two outfielders in the top 100 (which you should), you’ll still need to identify some late bargains. The top 20, 40, 60 and 80 outfielders for 2011 fantasy baseball can be found under the 2011 fantasy baseball rankings. This is by no means all the outfielders I’d draft for one of my teams. This is a list of guys that will go after the top 200 and could provide some healthy returns. Where applicable, click on the player’s name to read more about them and to see their 2011 projections. Anyway, here’s some outfielders to target for 2011 fantasy baseball:
Julio Borbon – I don’t want to toot my own horn — well, actually I do, but can’t reach — but last year this outfielder to target post had Bruce, Rasmus, Corey Hart, Jason Heyward, Austin Jackson and Julio Borbon. Okay, Borbon was a year too early. Fair enough, fair enough. What makes Borbon enticing is his potential for 5 to 7 homers and 20 to 30 steals. The parade rain is his potential to sit on the bench and watch David Murphy play. One injury to the Rangers outfield — that could never happen with Hamilton and Cruz! — and Borbon will be a great bargain.
Tyler Colvin – Same deal as Borbon as far as playing every day goes.
Jose Tabata – ESPN has him at 253. I have him ranked at 82 overall. That might be the biggest gap for any player that doesn’t spell his last name with a P, R, A, D and O. I’m not sure I understand why they’re so down on Tabata in the non-sexual way, but if I try to figure out their logic, my brain hurts.
Logan Morrison – His upside is small and his downside is small. She says she likes the ocean. Yeah, I rhymed small and small. Sue me for the twelve seconds it took you to read it. Because of Morrison’s propensity to take a walk, I can’t imagine he falls on his face, but he also might only match James Loney-type numbers. For what it’s Wuertz, Rudy and I just drafted Morrison in our LABR league, hoping he breaks on through. In deep leagues like that, I love Morrison. About as safe as you can get while also being upsidey.
Garrett Jones – You almost definitely have to platoon him out, but he’s on the strong side of the platoon, going against righties. If you can work in a hot hitter when Jones is sitting and get Jones for his 20+ homers and 7 steals, it’s not too bad.
Andres Torres – Currently has the ADP of 234 at Mock Draft Central. I see no reason why he can’t repeat last year, assuming he stays healthy. That’s not as easy for him as it would seem, but it’s worth more than the 234th spot.
Angel Pagan – Another guy who’s very low according to MDC. Honestly, I don’t know how accurate that ADP list is, but Pagan shouldn’t be at 243.
Travis Snider – Here’s what I said last October, “(Snider) hit .155 in April and nearly lost his starting job. Where the OBP was solid in the minors, it abandoned him. Nothing was working. Then in May, he turned things around hitting .378. Gaston giveth time, Snider giveth power and OBP until he hurt his wrist and went to the 15-day DL for 62 days. Wrist injuries can be tricky things. Maybe when he returned in August with little power he was still nursing it? Maybe his power didn’t really return until the last week of the season when he hit four homers in 6 games? Maybe Green Day’s been singing the same two songs for the last fifteen years, one fast and one slow? I do not have the answers to these questions. I’d like to think all three are answered in the affirmative.” And that’s me quoting me!
Dexter Fowler – I could just say SAGNOF at this point because I’ve been touting Fowler for two years. Old habits yadda3. To reaffirm what I’ve been reaffirming on top of my affirmations, Fowler could easily be as valuable as Victorino one hundred spots later in a draft. He’s Feign Victorino, ya’ll!
Cameron Maybin – I almost left Maybin off the list entirely and would hesitate to draft him outside of NL-Only leagues. Couple of things bother me: A) His upside may only be The Big FraGu. B) His move to Petco doesn’t help at all. C) There’s no C.
Manny Ramirez – Well, there’s an exciting name! What, no Raul Ibanez? Cute, random italicized voice. Sure, Manny’s no longer exciting, but he’ll have the DH spot to snuggie himself into and he’s never… wait, let me say it again in big letters… NEVER been unproductive when healthy. I doubt he hits .395 and 35 homers, but 25 homers and a .290 average doesn’t seem out of the realm of possibility. He shouldn’t be on the list because he’s only ranked 195 overall at ESPN, missing that magical cutoff of 200, but it’s my list and I can make the magical cutoff disappear when I want.
Peter Bourjos – He may sit here and there because of Vernon Wells, but never underestimate the Sciosciapath’s defensive-minded leanings.
Michael Brantley – This guy is so off the fantasy radar… How off is he?! How come whenever I say something is so something that stupid Match Game refrain plays in my head. Brantley is off the radar; leave it at that. Brantley might be the best name on this list or the worst. (I guess he could also be somewhere in the middle like Monie and Malcolm, but what kind of hyperbole is that? Brantley’s the most middlest! That’s stoopid.) In the minors, Brantley showed a good eye so a decent average is possible while also stealing 30 bases. Or the Indians demote him in April because they’re dopey. Really could go either way.
Lorenzo Cain – I recently received this letter in the mail, “Grey, hola from Caracas! Big fan of Razzball and your machismo. Let me ask you a pregunta that is plain and simple like my cousin Juan Carlos del Flores. Who’s the number one added outfielder in April that no one is currently drafting? Yours, Juan Francisco del Flores (not to be confused with Juan Carlos del Flores).” Thanks for writing in, Juan Carlos del Flores. It’s a great question. My money’s on Lorenzo Cain. Has speed, some slight power and no one, not even anyone in Lorenzo Cain’s family, is drafting him.

Venable? I’m in a league with a lot of stat cats but I’m gambling he can steal bags and score runs for me (as well as hit triples and things like that, which most leagues wouldn’t count). If he leads off for the Pads — and he seems to have the edge over Maybin — I bet he’s usable. I’m hedging my bet with Colvin (so, basically punting LF).
I’ve been questioning MDC ADP data as well. But, is there any better option out there? I take ADP into serious consideration as to when to draft players, so an unreliable ADP source would be devastating.
@NewBVick: u can only take it with a grain of salt….. how accurate can some ADP’s be when people enter a draft, pick players for 1-5 rounds, then dip? everything after that is garbage then….
@Alpine McGregor: Venable could get you steals, I don’t trust him at all.
@NewBVick: Agree with Tony. It’s all a grain of salt stuff. You can’t rely on someone to be there at 200 just because his ADP says 220. There’s a huge margin of error with ADP.
@Grey
I was going to ask you about Ben Francisco here, but I realized that you already wrote about him in the morning edition.
Wow! Tony Randall! I’m a big fan!
Grey –
Handicap the chances that Aroldis Chapman gets moved into the rotation this year. I drafted him knowing I’ll probably be using him as a MRP with the upside to close, but I hopepraypine for him in a SP role. Any chance it happens?
@Alpine McGregor: BTW, I like your site, good writing.
@El Famous Burrito: Ha
@Eddie: 5% chance, and he’d be sent to the minors to get stretched out first which would delay it a month too.
Thanks Grey, and right back at you times 1000. Razzball is pretty much the fantasy baseball oracle as far as I’m concerned.
@Grey: I’ve read that drafting a player at their ranking (assuming your ranking is correct) will get you a 6th place finish. But, waiting and picking that player later is what wins leagues. I assume it means if you draft them later you gain value instead of selecting them at where you have them ranked which would be a wash in terms of value.
So, I’ve figured I could use ADP to know when the latest point I can pick such player is. But, as you and Tony brought up this data is flawed. Is a players ADP then reduced to somewhat of an educated guessing game?
Would using the “earliest drafted” data from MDC be more helpful than using their ADP data?
How far would you generally trust ADP numbers, as far as overall draft position goes? I’m picking 5 of 10 in an upcoming draft, trying to get an idea of the best value for the 1st 3 or 4 picks…
Seems like options may be:
5 – Tulo, Longo, Votto
15 – Howard, Fielder, Wright maybe
25 – Pedroia, Zimmerman, Kemp, Holliday
35 – Uggla,, Kinsler, Choo, McCutch
Thinking Longo, Howard, Zimm, and Uggla if at all possible…Obviously, anyone’s first pick will affect what position they go after that, but what do you feel is the best combo of positions for a mid-round 1 pick? I’m on board with getting a 1B and 3B early, OF after that?
Just finished 12 team mixed Weekly H2H:
C: Napoli
1B: M. Cab.
2B: K. J.
SS: Alexei
3B: Bautista
OF: Hamilton
OF: Werth
OF: Span
UT: Reynolds
SP: J. Johnson
SP: Latos
RP: Thornton
RP: Street
P: Lilly
P: Kuroda
P: Daniel Hudson
BN: Volquez
BN: J. Montero
BN: D. Jennings
BN: Kimbrel
Some AVG concern, I think, but if M. Cab./Hamilton can each go .310, that will help off-set .250′s from Bautista/Napoli/Reynolds. Maybe I’m rationalizing that. The bench is a little funky, but in a weekly H2H, I figured no reason not to go all-upside – it’s not like anybody’s ever going to play unless they breakout or there’s a serious injury to a starter…
@Alpine McGregor: KIT, BFF
@NewBVick: Seems pretty general. If you pick the wrong players even at a discount, it’s not going to help you.
@Chili Davis Con Carne: Those four would be great. Any order of 1B, 3B, OF then 2B or SS and you should be fine.
@tyler: I don’t like Hamilton, Bautista, Werth, Latos or really Alexei and Span, so not exactly my dream team.
Grey : You mentioned on another thread that you were not a big fan of AVG on my team and overall didn’t sit well. Can you elaborate where you’d like to see improvement or where I can chip away? It is a yahoo 5×5 league that uses OBP and QS instead of avg and wins. Also its the 10th year for this keeper league so when players like Lester and HanRam are round 21 keepers, things can get tough.

@Mr2Bits:
Also forgot to add that your first 5 SP tiers were gone after the 4th round round
I actually like Venable…if you have the roster space.
Away against righties he’s almost stud.
If you miss out on Drew Stubbs or BJ Upton in round 7, just wait 15 rounds and grab Will Venable for similar production
@Mr2Bits:
And Chris Young/Hart were keepers as well.
@Mr2Bits: If it’s OBP and not a AVG league, then that helps. No idea how many teams are in this league.
@NewBVick: This is what I use:
http://www.fantasybaseballcafe.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=420573
@Grey:
10 Team H2H Keeper league with 3OF, 1 Util and 1,2,3,SS. But as stated before, players like Tulo, HanRam, Lincecum and Miggy Cabreara are in the 20′s for other guys keepers. Makes things go quick thats for sure.
So I have one spot to fill and will be dropping Brignac for a second fill(or more if you don’t like what I have so far) spot and was hoping you could help clean things up or improve in crappy areas
This is about all thats left to improve my team from pitching :
Scott Baker
Tim Stauffer
Brett Cecil
Homer Bailey
Bronson Arroyo
Derek Holland
Jon Garland
Derek Lowe
R.A. Dickey-
Brian Duensing
Dallas Braden
Offense available on the FA wire
Rajai Davis-
Andrés Torres
Logan Morrison
Coco Crisp
Austin Jackson
Sean Rodriguez
Luke Scott
Dexter Fowler
@Mr2Bits:
Travis Wood is also available from the pitchers pool
Wondering about my first pick coming up tomorrow in my 8 team draft. Our categories are:
H, R, RBI, HR, SB, AVG, OBPS, W, L, SV, K, ERA, WHIP, Ks/9
Here are my keepers:
Prince, Wright, Longo, Kemp, CarGo.
I have 8th and 9th pick (which is also technically 48th and 49th). You had said to go with a solid SP and a bat, and I’m aiming for Kershaw for the SP spot and I’m not sure what bat. Assuming Kershaw is gone, which SP would you take?
Verlander, Grienke, Weaver, JJ, Hamels
Which bat would you prefer (there is a good chance some of them might be gone, so can you rank em?):
Uggla, Phillips, Pedroia, Morneau, Cruz, Dunn, Mauer, Andrus, Krispie
Thanks man.
@Wilsonian:
Andrus might be a little early there, especially over the 2Bs. And if Kershaw is gone, I’d probably go Greinke or Verlander. Grey has Weaver at the top in the ranks though so who knows!
Ugh, you had to mention Ibanez. Every time he tried to turn that corner last year, it moved further up the street.
Closer question:
Would you take Nathan, Capps, or Rodney first if you were trying to limit risk?
I have Broxton and Kimbrel, and figure that I need one more closer in order to mitigate the risk in those two. Fair assessment?
@Mr2Bits: Wood over Niese and Torres over Brignac if he’s a bench bat.
@Wilsonian: Take a 2nd baseman and the SPs are ranked on the top 20 post.
@Steve: Ha
@Lava: Nathan, Rodney…
@Lava: BTW, all three of those have risk.
@Jason: yeah, I was leaning one of the 2Bs there (got my fingers crossed for Uggla), but at the same time I’m OK with Hill falling to me about 75 picks later. I also like Verlander more than the rest, as he would be my second option after Kershaw. I think Grienke picks it up a little this season for a winning team, too. Thanks for your input!
@Grey: thanks man. As I said above, I was leaning that way. Assuming Kershaw is gone, I would need to take one of those guys to anchor my rotation, correct?
@Wilsonian: Yes, you need an SP, especially in that shallow of a league.
Looking forward to hearing your LABR report.
Speaking on NL Only leagues, I’m taking over a Dynasty League, 25 man rosters, 10 team, 280 salary. Last year’s owner left with a surfeit of cheap moderately talented CI’s and OF’s. I’m trying to upgrade the top-end.
I’ve been offered his Hunter Pence (32) for my Chris Johnson (5) and Robot Jones (9). I’ve got 1B, 3B and CI covered with Prince Fielder (25), Pedro Alvarez (16) and Ike Davis (5). It’s a lot to pay for Hunter Pence, but with keepers inflating salaries, I think it might be worth it.
Appreciate your thoughts in advance.
Oh ho man. I’m excited. I’ve got my first draft of the year on Sunday. Just found out I have the 9th pick. It is on ESPN, so hopefully some guys follow those rankings a bit. I’m hoping for Votto/Zimmerman for my initial pairing… My biggest issue with this league is that we separate into RF/LF/CF. I am guessing I treat CF kind of like SS, since its probably top heavy, with lots of SAGNOF. Thoughts?
Grey:
10 team standard 5X5 roto league starting C,1B,2B,SS,3B,CI,MI,3OF,U,and any combo of 7P.
How would you use your 4 BN slots?
All P’s (some SP and some RP or all SP’s), combo of hitters P’s? Safe backups or fliers?
Your opinion is greatly appreciated.
@Grey: much obliged!
is j.p. howell worth a flier in the final rounds of a 20 team league?
re: ADP. Use the ADP given by your site. MDC’s mocks don’t exactly have the most user friendly interface, and as a result players that are drafted in 99% of leagues go undrafted at MDC, thus plummeting their ADP and making you think you can get a guy in the 17th when he’s going to be gone in the 13th.
I overmocked last year and paid way too much attention to ADP and I was constantly getting undercut in the draft. It killed my day. That won’t happen again. I’m not saying take Stanton in the 4th, but if you want a guy, go get him….your team, homes!
@Grey:
Fair enough! This league likes its closers, so the best options available when I am picking closers (right around where you suggest) are somewhat risky in and of themselves. I guess it’s good to be risky with closers, if you’re going to take risk at all!
I’m assuming you like the news about Nathan’s health, if you’re picking him over Capps? This is in opposition to your rankings.
Hey, first time commenter Grey, but been reading for a while. Love this shiz.
Got my 12 team mixed 5×5 draft this Friday, and have the 5th pick. League only requires 3 OF. With pitching so deep, I am basically taking one arm around the 5th round, and then punting P and C until the rest of my lineup is filled out.
With this in mind, do you think springing for McCutchen in the 3rd (Pick 29), followed by Stanton/Bruce in the 6th and Stubbs in the 7th seems pretty logical? I would surround the McCutchen pick with power at 1B, 3B, and a MI.
Much appreciated!
Strategy question for you Grey:
Say it’s the third round, and you have Pujols and Holliday already. Howard is somehow still on the board, but the league only has one 1B spot; do you take Howard and use him at DH, or take a lesser player that plays an unfilled primary position?
@Schmohawks Bob: I’d take Pence.
@dsimon: re: CF — Agree with that.
@Buge Hoobs: No hitters. An SP and two handcuffs.
@giantJJ: Yup
@Carns: Yup
@Lava: Yup… Not in opposition to my last Closer Look.
@Jared: Thanks for the kind words! That sounds like a solid plan assuming you mean the league only needs SPs not 3 OF cause I’m not sure how 3 OFs makes the pitching deep.
@Tomas: Nope
going a little deeper with OFs…keeper league…rank’em
John Jay, Nolan Reimold, Jarrod Dyson, Scott Cousins?
I have J. Upton, Heyward, and Pence in the OF. I also have Gardner and Beltran. Should I drop Beltran for one of the above listed, or Freddie Freeman. Also, I punted catcher and landed Salty. Should I go with Ruiz? PS, in top 20 catchers you suggest if one can get Ruiz, they should not reach for a guy like Salty, but I don’t think Ruiz is in the top 300 list and Salty is somewhere in the 200′s.
Grey : Any hunch/lean for the TB closer? I’m hearing Farnsworth but McGee is also popping up allot?.
@Grey: Thanks for all the on-field highlights from the LABR trip.
What about off-field? A new post coming?
If you subscribe to MDC preseason pass, I think its like $20, u get access to the Expert ADP which I find useful since its based on fully completed drafts.
Surprised this hasn’t been brought up:
Greinke will miss first two-three starts of the season (about 4-6 weeks total) because he has a fractured rib. He suffered it falling down after going for a rebound.
Three teams drafted so far and luckily only Marcum twice and Gallardo once.
Grey, how far does Greinke’s injury drop him in your rankings considering he will miss 3 to 4 starts and the scary idea of spending a early draft pick on someone injured?
this year im drafting fukudome. only because hes always very good in april, then you can drop him may 1st.
Grey: NL-only LABR format keeper question. All players entering yr 2 of a 3 yr fixed contract. Is the Cuban Missile @ $7 a keeper over either Bruce @ $23 or LuCroy @ $1 ? If I toss Chaps back he’ll be taken #1 (not me) in our minors draft.
And thx for the ocean laugh … Ladies Love Cool Grey!
@Grey:
Would your opinion of using 4 BN slots with P’s have changed if you knew that it was a weekly league?

@Mr2Bits: Farnsworth
@Steve: Thursday, I believe…
@Eddy: Thanks for the heads up!
@quimmy: Drop him 30 picks overall.
@The Mad Hungarian: Thanks! I’d go with Bruce…
@Buge Hoobs: Yup, draft 2 bench SPs.
@Grey: Some stuff about the draft would be good too.
Grey, I am in a 10 person league w. 3 OF/team. How many OF would you advise drafting? I was thinking of holding 3 steady guys and grabbing 2-3 OF fliers to see who develops. I know you advise against using bench spots for bats but what about stocking up on upside?
@Grey: TY as always sir. Hope you dominate the LABR.

Does anyone know of a scheduling tool for fantasy baseball?
Grey stopped following me on twitter even though twitter said we were friends! I don’t get it. Should I stop reading this site every day?
How big does your bench need to be before you decide to pickup some Bench bats? I read you thoughts on handcuffs, SP and an occasional bat with extreme upside. Lets stay with a 10 team league, when is the bench large enough to pickup some bats? I am in a league with 9 active pitchers 12 active bats and a bench of 8 players. We have $2 tranny’s in this league (not that it really would play into a strategy) I want to win!!!!
@Black Beard: Not sure what you mean.
@-redacted-: I went through and deleted people that hadn’t tweeted in the last month. Sorry, guess you got caught in the crossfire.
@wiudavis: I usually don’t take bench bats unless the league is deeper than 12 team mixed or weekly. That league sounds like it’s on the cusp and you should take a bench bat or two.
Oopps..I left out those details. We are weekly H2H with daily lineup changes.
Grey, is Thornton definitely going to be the closer?
@Grey: 12 Team Roto Keeper League. Trade my J-Upside & Greinke for his Hommy Tanson, Dread Pirate, & Papelbon? Thanks!
Just finished drafting my relatively shallow 12-team mixed (OBP and Holds). I had the 6th pick. Longo, Tex, and Braun were keepers. What do you guys think?

Currently in the 16th round of a 16-team H2H league with OPS and AVG.
Is Grady Sizemore worth a pick?
@Grey:
I’ve always tried reserving my BN for multi-position eligible bats in case of injury and a SP or 2, so please don’t be offended by my ignorance here:
Where do I find your top ranked handcuffs? Would they be the middle relievers?
@Thanks: Yup
@Bill Lumbergh: Sure
@Waldo: Team looks solid, might be a little light on WHIP but it’s not terrible.
@Eddy: Yup
@Buge Hoobs: Yup
@Grey: Thanks Grey. My local NPR affiliate has been kind enough to spend the week telling me to give money to the most important source of news and information in my life, so I’ll be sending a daiquiri your way in a minute.
I’m in a 12 team H2H 7 player keeper. We keep them as our 1st 7 picks of the draft. 6 (R, SB, HR, SB, TB, OBP)x 6 (W, SV, WHIP, ERA, K/9, HOLD)
Debating between the following:
Zimmerman, Kinlser, Dunn, Braun, Choo, Stubbs, Oswalt, Anderson, Latos, Wilson…
Which 7 do you think? Obviously the first 5 are good to go and leaning towards Latos and then….
I just saw that Rudy was in that LABR draft with Karabell! Love it!
Love everything about your site, check it daily.
It’s the third round and McCutchen, upton, Felix, and Heyward are all left on the board, what do you do? (1B and 3B taken in 1 and 2)
