Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

Max Scherzer is finally starting to post some non-apocalyptic ERA/WHIP results to go along with his thunderous league-leading K totals.  A 7 inning / 1 ER / 9 K win against the Pujoless Angels marks his 4th straight start with a Win, 6+ IP, 2 ER or less, and 8+ Ks (this was actually his 8th straight start with 8+ Ks!).   His season ERA and WHIP are still north of 4.00/1.30 but he will under those marks in nein time at this rate.  I imagine the only thing scarier than facing Mad Max Scherzer right now is imagining him channel his inner Mel Gibson (1980′s crazy, charismatic version) and intimidating the opposition by popping his pitching shoulder in and out of the socket between pitches.  Anyway, in other news…

Delmon Young - 5-for-8 over the weekend with 2 doubles and a HR at home against the Angels.  Luckily, there are no Jewish panhandlers in Detroit or else he might have re-channeled his inner Mel Gibson (2000′s crazy, Anti-Semitic version)

Albert Pujols - Missed the past four days with a strained calf.  The MRI showed no major damage but there is still doubt whether he will be back for the Angels’ next game on Tuesday.  Man, I remember when Pujols was younger and his body was so chocked full of stem cells that he could break a finger on a hit by pitch and his knuckle would regenerate by the time he got to first base.

Jason Kipnis - 3 SBs against the Yanks on Sunday which almost doubles his SB count since July 1.  He’s hit about .200 during that time with 1 HR.  Incidentally, the definition for Kipnis in Moishe’s Yiddish dictionary is “a man who cannot get hits when it gets too hot and he starts to schvitz”.

Freddy Garcia - Here is a riddle.  How did starting pitcher Freddy Garcia leave the game with a 3-2 lead in a game his team won 4-2 and still not get a Win?  Because he only managed to get through 4 2/3 IP.  Nice job, Jabroney!

Ike Davis - 2 HRs to supply all the offense in in a 2-1 Mets win over the Astros.  He now has as many HRs after the ASB (12) as he did before it.  I like 2nd half Ike more than I like 1st half Ike but I’d like him even more if he didn’t react so violently when offered help by his hitting coach.

Jeremy Hefner - Lost the win and the shutout against the Lastros by giving up a run in the 9th.  The Met fans were super disappointed as his Uncle Hugh had offered free party invites at the mansion if he threw a shutout.  Hefner’s performance to date has been spotty but he’s worth streaming in the right matchup.

Matt Holliday - 4-for-5 with the Wee Willie Keeler cycle (1B,2B,3B, another 1B) and 4 RBIs.  It looks like Holliday has overcome Beltran’s crazy hot start to be the most valuable Cardinal in the Player Rater.  While that’s great, Matt, I would not celebrate just yet.  I know, it would be so nice.  But it’s a long season.

Allen  Craig - 3-for-5 with a HR (#20) and 3 RBI.  It would be difficult to figure out a way to play Berkman, Craig, and Freese in the same lineup but luckily at least one of them is hurt at all times.

Joe Saunders - Traded by the Diamondbacks to the Orioles.  The Diamondbacks are opening up spots for young pitchers while the Orioles can’t bear to watch any more of theirs.

Tim Hudson – Gets the W in a 7 IP, 1 ER, 6 baserunners, and 3 K start.  He’s now 13-4 this year and 194-101 in his career.  His K/ERA/WHIP are never exciting but he is the epitome of a solid 4th/5th SP in shallow leagues.

Cliff Lee - Gets the W in a 7 IP, 1 ER, 7 baserunners, and 5 K start.  Improves his record to 3-7, finally catching up to the win total of immortal Phillie teammate Raul Valdes who has pitched 29 IP to Lee’s 161.

Nate Jones - The most valuable fantasy pitcher over the weekend as he got Wins on both days for the White Sox.  He is 7-0 on the season despite 1.53 WHIP in 50 IP.  Jose Quintana has 5 Wins for the White Sox despite 110 IP with a 1.19 WHIP.  And that concludes the “Whining about the number of Wins that pitchers on 1+ of our teams have”.

Joey Votto – Hoping to return next weekend after a small rehab assignment.  Hopefully the rehab goes better than that of his sister Demila.

Jose Bautista - Two days back and he is returning to the DL with wrist inflammation.  Based on this video, an inflamed wrist seems cool but probably does not mix well with a wooden bat.  Doubt we will see Joey Bats again this year.  So good news, Moise Sierra fan!

Brandon Morrow - Back after 2 1/2 months on the DL and, unlike Bautista, managed not to go back on the DL after his start.  He had 7 Ks on Sunday but was only able to get through 4 2/3 IP.  The big number was that he only threw 1 BB.  If his BBs are in order, Morrow is a must own in all leagues.

Mark Rogers - Went 5 shutout innings for the win against the Pirates and managed to throw 101 pitches despite only 3 hits and 3 walks.  Nice foul balls, Pittsburgh!  He is fine to stay away from outside of the easiest of streams.

Carlos Gomez - The lesser CarGo went for the slam with the double side of legs.  I haven’t paid too much attention to Milwaukee this year (do not own anyone on it) but is anyone else shocked he has 13 HRs and 26 SBs this year in less than 300 ABs?  If you are desperate for SBs, he is worth a try.

Erik Bedard - Crapped the bed (4 2/3, 6 ER, 8 baserunners, 3 Ks) in what seemed like an attractive stream given Milwaukee’s road hitting challenges and the charmed home splits of seemingly every Pirate pitcher (Bedard’s home/road ERA split going into the game was 3.26/6.98).  I think I liked him better when he was mostly good and seldom healthy vs. mostly healthy and seldom good.

MaLoney - Yeah, that’s my made-up name for Adrian Gonzalez’s replacements – Mauro Gomez and James Loney.  They each got a start over the weekend with Gomez having the much better game (4-for-6, HR, 3 RBI).  I would not be surprised to see the Sawx give Gomez an extended shot and potentially DFA Loney.  Loney had such potential – if only he had a coach in LA that understood the challenges of playing 1B on a major market team.

Jason Heyward - HR’d in all three games @SF which is a notoriously tough place for lefties to hit HRs unless you are on steroids.  Heyward is now at 24/19 for the year and making his way into the top 30 on the Player Rater.  I don’t think he will ever steal more than 15 SBs in a season again but it wouldn’t shock me if he hit 35+ HRs next year.

Chris Volstad - LOWERED his ERA to 6.28 in 6 2/3 shutout innings at home against the Rockies.  Think injuries and apathy are causing the Rockies to pack it in.  Look at this lineup:  1. Blackmon, 2. LeMahieu, 3. Pacheco, 4. CarGo, 5. Rosario, 6. Colvin, 7. Nelson, 8. Herrera, 9. Chacin.  Even Ron Gardenhire would have a tough time getting that many utility players into a lineup.

Alex Gordon - A 4 RBI game while managing to avoid hitting a HR.  He has managed to maintain last year’s AVG/OBP gains (.299/.366) but lost the power (9 HRs).  He is finally living up to the expectations the Royals had for Mark Teahen.

Adrian Gonzalez - Hit a 3-run HR in his first AB as a Dodger.  He is instantly Sylvester Stallone’s favorite Dodger hitter since Mickey “Piss Lightning and Crap Thunder’ Hatcher.

Alfredo Aceves - Received a 3 game suspension from the Red Sox for a verbal altercation with Bobby Valentine.  It probably started with some frustration over Andrew Bailey (pick him up if you need saves!) getting the latest save opportunity but Aceves crossed the line when the Mexican-born pitcher made a snide comment that his people invented the wrap before Bobby Valentine.  “When was the last time someone served cold cuts in a burrito, Alfredo?  Answer me that one, muchacho.”

Is it time to drop Plouffe? I have 1 move remaining for the year, and I was planning on dropping him and adding Michael Young. Any reason I shouldn’t? Dude is killing me last two weeks…..

    • @AP, I’m not going to convince you otherwise. I think Plouffe’s run in the middle of the season was a fluke. It was like he was a fantasy scrub and then ‘Plouffe!’ he’s a HR hitter.

Weekly H2H, Kyle Seager or Manny Machado at 3B this week?

    Thanks!

    • @Schizer, Definitely Seager.

  4. I’m terrified to start Burnett against the Cards today, but the Stream-o-nator rates him a roughly average play. I don’t need a gem, just a QS. You think he’s up to it? My playoff hopes have been shattered by the Cardinals offense teeing off on one of my pitchers many times before…

    • @Alpine McGregor, The game is @PIT which has beengreat for pitchers all year. If this was @STL, I wouldn’t start Burnett. STL is one of the tougher draws but, remember, that their two best hitters right now are RH so Burnett is in a better position to succeed than Bedard was on Sunday.

  5. fri-guy says:

Playoff time in my H2H and I can’t decide between (pick 2):
    2 start Burnett
    2 start Capuano
    2 start Beckett
    1 start Wainwright

    tx

    • @fri-guy, Capuano and Beckett pitch @COL in one start and home vs. ARI at the other one. Even with COL’s depleted offense, not sure I want any of that. Burnett has a tough home start vs. STL and then @MIL which has been tough. Wainwright @WAS up against Gio.

Tough call. I’d go with Wainwright because he’s been pitching so well. If you’re going for volume, I’d go with Beckett as I think the league/team switch might get him going.

      • fri-guy says:
        (link)

@Rudy Gamble, i get to pick 2…what worried me about wainwright was that he left early yesterday, but he’s been a monster lately.

i’m leaning toward wainwright and beckett. i also have jansen as my closer for the win/save possibility.

        thanks!

    • Eddy says:
      (link)

      @Eddy,

Also, is Shelby Miller a must add if called up (like STL is thinking about doing)?

    • @Eddy, @COL is always suicide unless you’re talking about a top 1/2 starter. I think Beckett will rebound in LA but not willing to try him in COL (he is prone to the gopher ball too…)

Question: Is Lester worth hanging on to? Been pitching better of late, but possible trade and hammy injury, have given me fits. I REALLY need pitching in a deep league heading into the playoffs and there aren’t that many warm bodies available. Cobb is available as well as Arroyo, but both are inconsistent and scary. Thanks

    • @fyke62, Yes, Lester is worth hanging on to. If he ends up on DL, then cut him.

Only one WW Pickup left for me this week. I could use SP but Zobrist is a FA and Alexei is my SS.

Who to snake? (12 team std 5×5 h2h)

    Zobrist
    Kyle Kendrick
    JA Happ

    Thanks!

    • @phorts, Zobrist isn’t much of an upgrade for Alexei but those are also some awful SP options. Go with Zobrist unless Kendrick or Happ have an amazing matchup in the next week or two…

SON is showing no love for my pitchers this week. Which 3 should I start this week:

    Marcum (SON 103) @ Cubbies
    Peavy (98???) @ Balt
Westbrook @ Pitt (103) and @ Wash (not yet scored)
    Darvish (104) vs TB
Minor (not yet scored) vs Philly
    Samrdijizdijiza (102) vs Brewers

I need K’s and W’s most of all. I have a shaky lead in ERA and I’m all set with WHIP.

    Thanks dude.

    • @L-Boogie, Samrd…ja, Peavy, Darvish, Minor, Marcum, Westrbook

Marcum would be marked higher but his start is a day game @ Wrigley. Those make me nervous…

      • L-Boogie says:
        (link)

@Rudy Gamble, So Marcum’s day game at Wrigley scares you more than Darvish’s summer game in Arlington?

        • @L-Boogie, Yeah, home starts scare me less than road starts. Marcum is going to be eating deep dish pizza the night before while Darvish will be at home eating his sashimi.

          • L-Boogie says:

@Rudy Gamble, You’re right. Forget park factor. Hodgepadre success is due to all the fresh, local seafood.

I think you need to add a pre-game dinner factor to the SON. CC stating in KC? -10 points after all you can eat rib buffet.

    Good morning, Rudy…nice writeup.

What are your thoughts on Casey Kelly making his first start for the Padres (in Petco) against the Braves? I’m looking for a capable streamer to replace Lance Lynn (now in the ‘pen). The SON is giving Estrada a 108 @ Wrigley today, while the Hodgepadre gets a 101. I’m assuming a lot of that has to do with Kelly’s lack of available stats, and perhaps also his capability to roofie. Interested to get your opinion.

    Thanks!

    • @Chillmodious, I like Kelly today and thought about gambling on him. I’d consider him vs. Estrada more of a coin flip…

      • Chillmodious says:
        (link)

@Rudy Gamble, Pray tell, who won the coin toss when you flipped? (it’s that close for me also, so I’m willing to let your coin flip overrule mine)

        • @Chillmodious, Estrada. SoN wins all coin flips.

          • Steve says:
            (link)

@Rudy Gamble, Hey Rudy – I posted this in the comments in Grey’s By/Sell, but thought you might like to see it…

OK, SON doesn’t always nail it, but look at what I got last week in H2H from following the SON (a couple of them, the SON wasn’t real hot on, but it still helps you pick one pitcher over another…)

            Millwood – 0 Ks 4.50 ERA 1.33 WHIP – ND
            Kendrick – 3 Ks 2.70 ERA 0.90 WHIP – Win
            Estrada – 9 Ks 0.00 ERA 0.50 WHIP – Win
            Cobb – 8 Ks 0.00 ERA 0.67 WHIP – Win
            Karstens 4 Ks 0.00 ERA 1.00 WHIP – Win
            Hefner 7 Ks 1.12 ERA 0.75 WHIP – ND

Not too shabby. Even with Belisle, Aceves, Erv Santana (selected using the ‘Steve-O-Nator’) and J-Zimm doing their worst, I had an ERA for the week of 2.96 and a WHIP of 1.11.

            Good work, Stream-O-Nator!

  13. Rags says:
    (link)

Can you rank Eovaldi, Turner, Corbin, Stults, and Chacin in NL-only? Does the order change at all in a keeper league?

    • @Rags, I don’t think any of these guys are worth keeping so order isn’t affected by that. At this time of year, it’s worth looking at the schedules to see who has the most attractive matchups. Not looking at the schedules, I like Corbin and Stults because they’ll probably have at least 2 weeks’ worth of solid matchups.

  14. FilthyRich says:
    (link)

Weekly H2H league. WOuld you use Norris as a SP this week? He has 2 home starts (SF, CIN) and his home ERA is almost 5 runs lower than road (2.18 vs 7.27).
    Other options are:
    Skaggs (CIN, @LAD)
    Mendoza (DET, MIN)
    Harvey (@PHL) – only 1 start
    Lincecum (@chc) – only 1 start

    • @FilthyRich, Hard to imagine Norris winning either of those two games but will be helpful on K’s. I like Skaggs the best of the two start pitchers and Lincecum better than Harvey.

(I want to do this before Friday because my leaguemates will have a good chance of taking the cream of the crop once the next week articles start appearing.)

    Thanks

    • @Justin, Thanks. I’ve never seen anyone publish probable starters more than 7 days in advance. perhaps look at all pitchers due to pitch 3-4 days before your weekly league start (so Tues/Wed if ur league is Sun-Sat) and then check their team’s schedules for next week?

    Thanks man!

    • @kaiser soze, i like mcallister or stults – mcallister for a few more k’s, stults for ratios. i prefer ludwick and davis. votto back next wknd and frazier will lose playing time. ruggiano due to regress.

@Grey, Nice. Special occasion or just a routine visit?

My parents are shifting out of a house today they’ve lived in for over 20 years. I lived there too. Will be strange to not go back there anymore.

Kids will miss the pool too…

                      (link)

@Grey, Nice! No – in fact they’re moving pretty much just up the road from where they are now.

Leasing an apartment for a year until they buy something permanent.

Fortunately, the complex has a pool (emoticon)

They’re only about a 25 min drive from me anyway.

@Grey, Yeah. Was also an opportune time to free up some cash. They want a place with fewer stairs too!

which 2 to stream this week?
    McAllister v OAK
    Darvish v TB
    Iwakuma @ MIN
    Fister v CWS
    Stultz v ATL

McA and Stultz have most SON love, but i am wondering why is Iwakuma is below 100, his last few have been excellent and hes got crappy Min this week

    One more please…

I dropped Niese as you advised, but in his place I had to activate Marcum, who I stashed over the weekend on the DL.

Still want to take a flier on Ciriaco. Which SPwould you drop, if anyone?

Medlen, McCarthy, Vargas, Anderson, Samardzija, Harvey (Holding onto Dickey, Scherzer, Marcum) Thanks

I play in a 10-team H2H Keeper league where we lock rosters when playoffs start, so i’m trying to get rid of all my young pitchers who might get shut down towards the end of the season. We also have 28 man rosters so not much on the wire for pitching.

Would you drop Fiers for Stults?

I haven’t heard anything, but do you think Patrick Corbin gets shut down?

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

Sure, go with Stults, can’t imagine he’s the best SP available in a ten team league though… Corbin will probably miss a turn or two…

      • beardcrabs says:
        (link)

@Grey, the format is a bit strange: C 1B 2B 3B SS LF CF RF UTIL UTIL SP SP RP RP P P P P P P and TWELVE bench spots: each team has at the most 3 bench bats (I have one), I have 5 closers and 12 SP’s hence no quality arms on the wire…

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

@beardcrabs, Ah, gotcha… Okay, then lose Fiers for him…

Any news on estimated return dates for Tulo or Lawrie? I’m hoping they might be back for playoffs starting a week from today… but even if they are who knows how good they’ll be… any thoughts, Grey or Rudy?

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

Maybe in ten days for Tulo… Lawrie’s maybe two weeks away…

  35. Steve says:

I traded for Rollins, so I have a mental block about dropping him outright, but is it crazy to think Ciriaco will outperform him the rest of the year?

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      It’s not crazy at all…

  36. Melvin Emanuel says:
    (link)

    @Grey

So you think Lawrie will be back in 2 weeks? Right now I have Frazier as my primary 3B but with Votto due back in a week, I’m expecting him to lose playing time. Luckily, I’m in second place so I get a bye week the first week of the playoffs so hypothetically I can transition from Frazier to Lawrie seamlessly. With this in mind, does it make sense to hold onto Lawrie? The rest of the WW mess is underwhelming: Ciriaco, M. Young, Alvarez, Moustakas, Chipper, Johnson.

    Thanks!

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

Yeah, I’d hold Lawrie for now… You’ll be able to change it up next week if you need to, right?

      • Melvin Emanuel says:
        (link)

        @Grey,

Yeah no move limit and rosters don’t lock. Bye is next week so I can wait and see how the status of Lawrie and Frazier change. If Frazier loses massive amount of playing time and Lawrie is shut down, I’m screwed. I still don’t get Dusty. He says Frazier’s time isn’t right now yet right now may be their best chance to win it all and their best 3B is going to be riding the bench in favor of Rolen. Is it wrong for me to wish an injury upon Rolen? I think it makes me a bad person.

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

I think Rolen’s at a 75% chance of injury every day, whether you wish it or not…
