On this episode of Solid Goldschmidt, we have Neil Young performing, “I’ve Been Searchin’ For a Heart of Goldschmidt,” and later the nursery rhyme, “John Jacob Paul Goldschmidt, His Name Is On My Buy List Too,” song by Various Artists. Well, I’m just full of Goldschmidt! Goldschmidt may have Growing Pains but don’t call him Tracey. Okay, breathe, Grey, you got puns… Breathe! Remove the cigarette and put on the oxygen mask — stat! When Goldschmidt was called up, trades were going down — the end of July is kind of a big deal! — so Goldschmidt never got his lead. Well, here we are. Paul Goldschmidt hit 30 homers in Double-A this year with 9 steals. Go for the Goldschmidt! Geez, I’m trying to stop. In most mixed leagues where you’re struggling with your corner infidel, I’d give him a shot. There’s Goldschmidt in dar hills! Okay, done. Anyway, here’s some more players to buy or sell this week in fantasy baseball:
BUY
Derek Holland – I’m not a huge fan of borderline Ranger starters. Sorry, Nolan. Their home park is Coors South. Seems like at any moment Holland could give up seven earned runs in two-thirds of an inning. Now that I’ve undersold (underbought?) him, he does have three shutouts in his last five starts.
Brett Cecil – Member what I said earlier today? Actually, I’m writing this before I said anything, but I’m sure I’ll say something. I always do. Oh, Grey.
Ivan Nova – 5 IP, 1 ER or 6 IP, 4 ER. That would be my exacta box if I had to choose Nova’s next start.
James McDonald – I almost called him James McStreamer. He’s been solid for the last two months, besides a start in Citizens Flank and yesterday. Can’t hold that against him; a lot better pitchers have been hit hard in Philly and yesterday’s start was four earned on four hits, that’s just mistimed big hits.
Alex Cobb – The Tampa Bay Peach has an ERA of 2.79, a WHIP of 1.20 and he gets those not-so-Athletics tomorrow. Yes, please and why not?
Charlie Furbush – Then after you pick him up you can cheer him on, “I love Furbush!” and your significant other can overhear and misunderstand you like in an O. Henry story and throw out her razors.
Jason Kipnis – Nothing says nourishing like some homers from Kipnis and a side of stuffed derma.
Brett Lawrie – Hope you didn’t miss out on him to the guy in your league that owns Desmond Jennings. People will point and laugh at you. Can you handle that sort of ridicule?
Chris Davis – It’s easy to look past his three years of failed hitting…Actually, it’s not easy to look past it. His grandmother Ann B. Davis would be very disappointed, and she’s fun-loving and carefree. If you’re really struggling at a corner slot, you could do worse (though not much, potentially).
Eric Young Jr. – Playing and stealing… Because he can! (And Tracy’s playing him and he’s fast.)
Eduardo Nunez – In one of my deepish leagues, someone dropped Eduardo Nunez. On one hand, I understand it. He’s not doing all that much. Then on the other hand, he can slot in at MI and steal bases. Then on the the third lesser known hand that is actually just a big ear, you should probably play the hot hand… Wait, another hand? Now I’m confused.
Rafael Furcal – Member when he was good? Yeah, I faintly do too. Was a while ago. He looks like he’s hitting now between DL stints, so it’s worth a flyer.
Dee Gordon – See Eric Young Jr. or an inch above.
Josh Willingham – The other white meat is hot with a side order of hot schmotato.
J.D. Martinez – The only thing standing between you and J.D. Martinez is the common sense that says don’t pick up an Astros hitter. I get it, but in some deep NL-Only leagues you have no choice.
Mike Carp – He keeps hitting but without power because he plays in one of those godforsaken ballparks that end in -co. We’ve cleaned baseball of steroids… Now move the fences in 100 feet! I miss 70 homer seasons. (Yet, no one thought it was weird at the time. 70 homers?!)
Lucas Duda – If I keep touting him, people are gonna start to think I really like this schmohawk. I mean, he’s a’ight. The preceding was taught in Hedging Your Fantasy Advice 101 at the Fantasy Baseball College of Charleston. You, “This guy is a fraud. I’ve done Google searches and the Fantasy Baseball College of Charleston appears nowhere except on this site. I tried Bing and it doesn’t show up there either. What gives, Grey? This isn’t a ruse, is it? I can’t handle ruses.”
SELL
Danny Espinosa – I’ll be honest, I hate doing these Sells. The Buys either hit or they don’t and you drop them. The Sells require you to drop them, then they get hot out of nowhere and you end up sending me anthrax. With that said, Espinosa’s doing a whole lot of nothing. He’s dug himself a hole — and I mean a hole literally and figuratively — and the best I see from him is maybe 6 more homers, a few steals and a lousy average. You can probably find that elsewhere, unless your league is so deep you can’t. These are decisions for you to make. Or not.
Rajai Davis – In most leagues, you want someone who is going to steal bases AND (caps for emphasis, not aesthetics) play every day. Right now, Davis is on the outside looking in on a Jays lineup that is filled with one outfielder, two 3rd basemen and six DHs.
Jordan Zimmermann – I told you to trade him a little over a month ago. Now you’re lucky to get the Padres top prospect, Nadir Bupkis.
Anibal Sanchez – Has nearly a 5.00 ERA in the last month and a half. BTW, you think Anibal and Gaby Sanchez ever double date with two girls named Kevin and Bob?
Juan Pierre – Has 4 steals in the last two months. Or one less than Eric Young Jr. in the last week. Since we started this post with a nod to Kanye, let’s end it the same way, “You’ve been putting up for Alex Rios for way too long…. Kenny Williams is so gifted at findin’ what you don’t like the most… So I think it’s time for us to have a toast… Let’s have a toast for Juan Pierre who stopped stealing bags… Let’s have a toast for Adam Dunn who’s in an o-for-78 hole… Let’s have a toast for Alex Rios who raised the white flag… Let’s have a toast for Gordon Beckham who didn’t have the decency to take a day off…”

16 Team H2H Keeper. I held on to Lawrie for backup reasons at 2nd and 3rd (have Espinosa and Reynolds). Would you drop Espinosa now for Goldy and play the Lawri-nator at 2nd for the rest of the year? I could also add J. Weeks for some insurance and drop Bourjos for Goldy.
Ab-Fab Albright – as per your yousche.
@Grey: I have J-Zimm and dont really need him. Drop him for Goldschmidt or Lawrie?
@Wilsonian: Drop Bourjos for Goldy and hang onto Espinosa.
@ Grey,
1. what do you think the chances are of Mike Adams closing next year (somewhere)?
2. do you like Brad mills at all?
@Wilsonian: Yeah, switch it up.
@Jaydog: That’ll be my name for when I’m watching Design Star.
@tHe sHiT: Lawrie
@The talented Mr. Dope man: 1. 10% 2. Not so much.
@Grey: just drop Bourjos for Goldy or also drop Espinosa for J. Weeks?
Tony Campana with an inside the park 2-run HR. Dude is fast. It wasn’t even close.
Bourgeios worth picking up for steals? 16 team league
yonder alonzo (out in left-field) proving why unions are good .
I have Ubaldo and Holland. You mentioned in the previous comment thread that one would be crazy and/or stupid to start Ubaldo. . . what about Holland at home against the Indians?
I’m chasing wins in a league with a GS limit. I suppose I could start both and watch the game get decided in the 13th.
What would you do? Thanks.
@The talented Mr. Dope man: He’s still under contract for another year, so Feliz would have to move into rotation and he’d have to beat out Uehara for closer.
@Myles Kennefick: I picked up Bourgeois for steals to replace Rajai in my 12 teamer. With Snider getting sent down though, the Toronto OF is a little less crowded so I decided to hold on to Rajai and dropped Lilly instead. Bourg already has 2 DL stints but steals bags like it’s his job (because it is) when healthy.
tl;dr: Cool story, bro.
@stumanji: Adams will beat our Uehara for closer any day of the week, and twice on sunday.
@Wilsonian: Weeks hasn’t been doing much. I’d hold if those are the choices.
@Wilsonian: He’s crazy fast.
@Myles Kennefick: Yup
@chata: Ha
@Earl Battey: I’d like to avoid Texas at home in most instances. Depends on other factors.
Watch out…Tyler Colvin just hit another one…he’s only 34 off pace.
@The talented Mr. Dope man: Biggest issue is he has 2 saves in his career. Managers like experience. If Feliz is moved into the rotation, there’s a long offseason where Texas can acquire a closer.
@Grey: I’ll hold then. Do have two more questions, however…
Bourgeois or Davis for steals? With Snider getting sent down, it looks like Davis might get a few more ABs than recently thought.
Also, do you like Colvin over Goldy for just this year? I really just want some pop out of some spot starters.
re: your last post, Holliday actually has more HRs per PAs this year than his career average (he only has 360 PAs because of injury). And it’s also his best HR/PA ratio since 2007.
Cust kayin’.
Question- I just picked up Matt Moore in a keeper league. Am I crazy for considering keeping him next year even though he’s never pitched in the bigs? His numbers are just insane. And what you think about keeping Wainwright next year (picked him up off waivers so he’s a 22nd rounder)? Thanks.
@Wilsonian: actually should be Bourjos, Bourgeois, or Davis for steals?
bad week to have picked up and started colvin in my Razz league .
somebody had to continue to suck .
guess it was me .
Kuroda or Danks ROS?
Thanks dude.
Ah dammit, just got offered a deal in my 16 Team H2H league. I was offered his Trumbo/D.Hudson/Anabelle for my Walden/Morrow. Seems like a good deal on the surface, but really would leave me short on closers (would just have Kimbrel and Rauch left). What do you think? Counter with Morrow/Rauch or Gio/Walden? Or leave Annabelle out and counter with Morrow/Rauch? He turned down Gio/Rauch for Trumbo/Hudson.
@Wilsonian: Bourgeois…No on Colvin.
@Random Collmenter: Depends how deep your league is.
@chata: Ha
@L-Boogie: Kuroda
@Wilsonian: Try Morrow/Rauch, but can’t imagine he’ll take it.
@Wilsonian: Colvin’s average makes Dan Uggla look like a batting champion. .124 entering play today!
@Grey: he cancelled it. But now wants Gio/Walden for Trumbo/D.Hudson. I’m trying to pry one of his closers away from him (most likely League, even though he sucks). If I got League, too, what do you think of the deal?
Oh, and I’m leaving Colvin alone. The Cubs fan in me has an issue with holding out hope that he’ll bash a few in the last two months.
Kipnis or Roberts for a bench bat? 14 team h2h
Furcal or Dee Gordon?
Need a short term fill in for Hanley (Might potentially keep once back as MI Filler) Nunez or Bartlett??
re: Keeping Matt Moore or Wainwright, league isn’t that deep – 10 teams, 5 SP’s, four bench spots. We get to keep 8 players (my other sure-thing keepers are Miggy, Prince, Holliday, Hamels, Hosmer, Jennings). Thanks.
Would you drop Kelly Johnson for Lawrie or EY Jr?
Hey Grey, I was just offered Cueto and Andrus for Hanley. I also have Asdrubal so I’m in good shape at SS already so I don’t think I need another backup SS. He has Sandoval (who I dropped earlier this year, curses!) and Zimmerman. My current 3b eligible guys are Freese/Ryan Roberts/Lawrie(once he gets 3b eligible). I only have one 1b eligible guy and that’s slugger formerly known as moobs. I’ve been trying to get rid of Hanley for months and Cueto has been extremely solid so I’m inclined to try and make a deal with this guy.
What do you think about Cueto + Sandovol for Hanley?
@Wilsonian: If you got League…
@strike thrower: Kipnis
@Jangles: Furcal, unless desperate for steals…
@Brew Crew: Nunez
@Random Collmenter: No Moore there.
@Killer Joe: Lawrie…Unless you really need steals.
@WDE05: Try for the Sandoval deal, he should do it, it’s fair.
For those of you in daily leagues:
Venable’s got four road games against RHB next week, two of them at Cin. Plug him in
Are we starting Ubaldo tonight? He has the unfamiliarity factor going for him, but the it’s in Texas and against Texas factors going against him..
What do you think about Filthy against the Phillies tonight? First game off the DL. Sit?
@Feeding the Abscess: Thanks for the heads up!
@The Sequential Hermaphrodite: Depends on the league size.
@zeke: Depends on the league size.
@Grey: he won’t do the 3 for 2 deal giving me League, too. Gio/Walden is too much for Trumbo/D.Hudson, right?
Would you deal either Gio, Kuroda, Lewis for Trumbo in a 1 for 1? I could then pick up either Nova, Vazquez, Cobb, Furry Bush, EJax.
Ha love the Anibal blurb, that’s all I wanna say! And I own both of em!
i’m wondering if anyone can tell me how many games lawrie played at 2b and at 3b in the minors this year. if he played 20 games at 2b he’ll be eligible there for me next year. i checked mniorleaguebaseball.com and i couldn’t get his games played.
Sorry Grey. 12 team mixed points league.
My gut says sit Sanchez, but it is in SF, so I thought I’d check with you….You steered me right with Bumgarner yesterday. He got the loss, but I still got decent points from a solid performance. Thanks.
I don’t think that my balls are as big as Mr Met’s head. I think my unusually small penis contributes to that illusion. Couple that with the fact I traded grienke and halladay hoping for Josh johnson’s return, and it leaves me spot starting 7 schmohawks while Justin Masterschmowhawkson anchors my staff and there you have why it falsely appears I have Siamese Mr. Mets between my legs.
@Grey: Start Harangutan @ PIT tonight?
@Wilsonian: It’s fair…Lewis…
@TheNewGuy: Thanks!
@anarchy burger: Not sure
@zeke: Start him.
@Votto-voom: Ha! Nice…
@Tele: Sure
@anarchy burger: 0 at 2b
http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=lawrie001bre
lawrie … rbi single up the middle
Lawrie with an RBI in his first AB…please let this kid be a beast and save me from Kelly Johnson’s slumps at 2b!
Do I put all these guys out there tomorrow? I’m tempted just to throw them all out there: Luebke @ Pit / Chacin v. Was / Narveson @ Hou. Thanks.
A little background on my situation with regards to my question above: I’m first in WHIP by a hair over 3 teams (14 team league), but also 10th in Ks, just a shade below 3 teams. I’m on an island by myself in ERA, so even worst case scenario I lose only a point, if that. I’m on pace to meet the innings limit, but don’t mind going a bit over at this point, benching SPs at the end of the season if need be and just riding Verlander (who I also have going tomorrow along with Cain).
@Salty Balty: Are guys like Chapman, Alburquerque, Romo, Clippard, and Uehara on the wire? Their K/9 is bonkers and most will help your WHIP
No, its a holds league, so guys like that are gone. My bullpen is currently Bastardo, Downs, Choate, and Mujica. I punt saves, but still managed to rack up 3 guaranteed points in the category (thanks Madson). I have K. Jansen on the DL who I picked up after he came back of the DL or after assignment, can’t remember which. That hurt. Jansen was on a roll. Also, the league counts K/BB, which changes the analysis a bit.
Yes! I got Paul Goldschlager in two leagues!
Keeper question (again):
Trade Adam Jones for Hellickson?
I could use either position equally next year
@WDE05: That’s what I’m saying! I need him to save me from Espinosa…
@Grey: but you wouldn’t recommend doing that deal if all I would have as closers are Kimbrel and Rauch? I could pick up a middle reliver like D.Hernandez, Venters, etc.
ffs Holland, just as people start to trust you…
Oh, and thanks for telling us to sell Annabelle. I think you put a charge under his ass!
@Salty Balty: Start them all.
@Gordon Shumway: Hold
@Wilsonian: Rauch is barely a closer right now, if at all.
@Wilsonian: It’s the reverse Sell curse.
Not pretty, but Rauch gets the save.
I’m looking at upgrading in runs and average. Got HR and SB locked up…RBIs still relevant. Got 11 SP’s so lots of depth there.
Would moving a package of Chacin, Espinosa, Kennedy and Iannetta for Mauer and Yunel Escobar make any sense?
Jesus – was it really that important for Niemann to throw a complete game?
@VinWins: Kinda surprised they went to him.
@knighttown: Yup
@Steve: Seriously
no way on god’s green earth was that a hit , by crawford , in the bottom
of the 9th .
jeter choked the throw .
@chata: Agreed
A Crawford hit? I’m taking it.
@Grey: yeah, I’m not leaving myself with just Kimbrel and Rauch.
In other unrelated news, Napoli hit another homerun tonight…
Anything to Lynn getting the save tonight for STL?
@Grey: any love for johnny giavotella? is he a snookie’s juice head guido boyfriend? nice first game…
Or Sale getting the save for CHW?
Harang with a sexy line (5 IP, 4 ER, 16 baserunners, and 1 K)… he definitely deserved that W. Is the guy who invented that stat dead already, or can I still kill him?
Speaking of potential murderers, we finally got a glimpse of the real CT this week… possibly a nice meltdown coming for the finale. It won’t make up for him adding sanity to his repertoire, but a strong finish would be nice.
FFS Perez.
Maholm, Cobb, Chatwood, or Narveson for a spot start tomorrow? I’d be dropping Carrasco for the streaming spot.
with the rest of the fantasy season coming up, who gives me the best pitching? Neise, Porcello, Nova or Nieman?
Hey grey…
In re: to my trade question earlier, guy has agreed to Sandovol + Cueto for my Hanley.
Now I need to decide who to drop…
I have Freese/Roberts currently at 3b, but both of those guys have been playing well so I hate to dump them. Meanwhile, Kelly Johnson has reverted back to his early season, putrid form. Is he a drop at this point? If I dump him, Roberts/Lawrie would be my 2nd base. Other options would be a pitcher…Aroldis Chapman (non holds league) or Dempster would probably be the guy’s I’d consider there.
5…the number of games in which DJ hasn’t had a homer or a steal yet. Stud!
Man Jason Werth loves to hurt us all doesn’t he, just when he looks to be heating up, we plug him back in…0/8 so far in Coors…Whereas guy he replaced in my lineup Maybin, goes 3/5…
Been trying to play the hot bat as I don’t have room for both guys and its a 10 teamer with deep benches, but been missing more than hitting recently. I won’t get much for trading em so in these situations do you like to try and play the hot bats, or just stick with one guy throughout? If so pick 2 outta these OFs for ROS (I need ribeyes and OBP mainly): Maybin, Werth, Crisp. Thanks
Hi, I’m in a dynasty league and have Napoli and Lucroy. Ramos has become available. Should I pick Ramos up and drop Lucroy or hold? Thanks.
^ I should add that Hank Conger is also available.
@Awesomus Maximus I think that’s the Conshellation Prize!
Fister or Leubke for the rest of the season
Lawrie or Ackley rest of season?
r, hr, rbi, avg, obp, sb, errors, gidp
Would you swap out Colon for Nova for the rest of the season
furcal or alexi ramirez rest of season?
r, hr, rbi, avg, obp, sb, errors, gidp
thanks grey…
@Wilsonian: I saw while I was at a strip club. Hey now!
@Wilsonian: Don’t think so.
@herschel: Ha… Eh
@Wilsonian: I can’t find a reason for that other than Ozzie’s crazy, which is valid.
@Awesomus Maximus: Mike and Paula feels like pedophilia. Adam and Jen is hilarious. CT and Laurel… Hmm, huh?
@Bazzrall: Narveson
@lopes: Niemann
@WDE05: Freese…
@TheNewGuy: First two
@The Sock: Hold
@LT: Fister
@paulzone: Ackley
@paulzone: Alexei
@anarchy burger: Not sure if your question has been answered about lawrie but I use baseball-reference DOT com for all minor league positional queries.
Answer: 0 @ 2b & 72 @ 3b
@Grey: zing! I was wondering about those two for a deep league. Picked up Lynn on speculation.
Would you lose Santos for Melancon or Izzy? I’m worried Ozzie’s crazy ass isn’t giving him many opps right now (which he isnt).
@Wilsonian: Not until we hear more from Ozzie.
@Grey: like that will make any sense…
Do you have an opinion on Colon or Nova – Colon looked tired last night and I’ve been riding him all season but I would think the yankees would get smart and use Nova
I like Zambrano’s way of working through the Reds’ order:
Go after the first two guys, walk the 3, 4 and 5 hitters, and continue going after the rest of the lineup.
Heisey possibly to the DL, Wristbands will still find a way to keep Alonzo’s butt glued to the bench.
@Feeding the Abscess: Or Alonso. Same thing, really, some dude with the last name of Alonzo would get the same amount of PT
On CBS’ GameTracker, dudes were saying “Zombrano is a fat fatty who can’t throw strikes, but he’s probably the best hitter in the Cubs lineup today”
Promptly hits a homer.
White Sox should sign him to DH/pitch in relief. Can’t possibly be worse than Dunn, right?
Started streaming pitchers in the RCL. Not going so well. Nicasio (1 IP, 1 ER, one blow to the head requiring surgery) and Peavy (start pushed til Sunday).
@Wilsonian: I know, right.
@LT: Don’t like Colon.
@Feeding the Abscess: Ha!
@Feeding the Abscess: True
Stubbs is awful right now. Would you deal him straight up for Krispie, Lind, Trumbo, or Morse if I needed some power?
is votto having trouble with his left shoulder ?
alonzo is just a terrible left-fielder
Jurrjens to the DL, Minor will pitch against the Mets tomorrow.
refrain
Alright, so I’ve got an involved little dealie here, figured I’d share and if anyone has the patience to read my ramblings, feel free to chime in. I feel its a pretty interesting situation, but then again, its my team so of course I do.
I’m trying to position myself for a title run here in a deepish, very active 5×5, 12 team league. I just got away with dealing Asdrubal and Hellickson for Sabathia and Bobby Abreu. I have some MI depth (Reyes, Kinsler, Ackley, Dee Gordon, and Lowrie stashed on the DL), so while the deal should cost me some offense, it shouldn’t be too much if I manage my lineup well. On the other hand, I have an opportunity to gain 3.5-5 points with the ERA boost and a couple points in W’s too. The biggest problem I have is that I’m pretty far ahead of the innings pace and I’m worried that my high K total is inflating my position a bit, being that I’m 2nd in K’s, and after running the numbers, I’m only 9th in K/IP. Going from Hellickson to CC should obviously help, and the guy who lead in K/9 is WAY behind the IP cap, so I can sort of assume I’m 8th in Ks.
My pitching staff is currently comprised as follows: Sabathia, Hamels, Beckett, Morrow, Garza, Niese, Marmol, Walden, League, Gregg. Running some more numbers, largely based on ZiPs RoS projections with a touch of my own IP total projections, I found this group should take me almost perfectly right up to the 1500 IP cap. I also dealt for Marmol and Gregg recently (while Marmol was scuffling, got a great deal there if he pitches the way he’s pitched the last week or so), and I have a ton of room to make up in SVs, so between the ERA, SV, and a bit of W’s boost, I think I can get close to 90 points with neutral luck as long as I can maintain my standing in Ks, which I could well do going from Hellickson to Sabathia. Also, for what its worth, I’m already 2nd in WHIP, so though I figure to maintain that strength, there’s little room for growth there.
Here’s the dilemma: I’ve been offered Lincecum for Sabathia straight up. My first inclination was that the K/IP boost is exactly what I need, even if it costs me a win or two, and that the ERA shift is probably a fairly lateral move, perhaps with Lincecum even offering a touch more upside. But thinking more about it, its a pretty interesting risk and not quite that cut and dry. I ran more numbers, this time based strictly on ZiPs ROS, and found that with Sabathia, I’m likely getting enough of a K/9 boost to maintain a high ranking in Ks, probably 2nd, with a final K/9 of 8.01 at the end of the year. However, that number wouldn’t be THAT far from the pack below me all, most of whom are between 7.80 and 7.95 that it would guarantee I maintain those points, and there would still be some risk I lose at least a few. With Lincecum, I would almost certainly be first or second, with an 8.09 K/9 at the end of the year, but it could well cost me a crucial W or two. My initial thinking was that the risk in Ks was much more significant than the risk in trying to chase W’s with CC, but after running the numbers, I’m not so certain anymore. It seems keeping CC is a higher risk move, but there’s actually more potential upside there if I can keep my Ks lead but gain a couple W’s, which could be the difference between 1st and 2nd or 2nd and 3rd, while with Lincecum, I’m safer in Ks but perhaps conceding some W’s.
Continued from ^^^: So the simple question being: Do I deal Sabathia for Lincecum straight up?
If you’re in a non-holds league, keep CC and dump Gregg for Chapman, Romo, Uehara, or Clippard. They’ll help your WHIP, K/9, and ERA.
@Wilsonian: Lind
@chata: Not sure on Votto.
@chata: Alonso is.
@Feeding the Abscess: Nice!
@Mark: Hold
I can’t I need the Saves to make a run (it is non-holds). That was my first move, I timed my buy on those two great, just when it was starting to look like Uehara was gonna get dealt and while Marmol was scuffling (it was a high risk move but I really didn’t give up much). I spent most of the year with just Walden and League until a few weeks ago and I figure to gain 3-5 points in Saves if I keep four closers (I’m currently 7th, was floating between 8th and 9th for much of the year). Plus all the guys you mentioned are owned, and Gregg has actually pitching respectably the last few months with xFIPs below 3.50 in both June and July.
Reckon Chris Perez’s days as the closer could be numbered? Another BS last night, and his peripherals are frankly flat out bad. Vinnie Pestano next in line? Thinking about giving him an add, can always use some more saves.
@TheNewGuy: Yeah, he could get replaced. Grab Pestano if you can.
@Mark:
you obviously know you numbers pretty well .
am having trouble wrapping my head around your prediction that you
will gain 3.5 to 5 points in ERA by simply adding C.C.
Grey is obviously the expert here , and I think he’s one of the best
in the business when it comes to evaluating pitching .
however , i worry about how many times C.C. will face the sawx
from here on out AND how long girardi is going to stick with him
during a tight pennant race .
every player is susceptible to having a bad outing , i just think that
girardi might be inclined to let C.C. “take his licks” … particularly since
other options would be worse , and he’d probably err on the side of
protecting his bullpen .
I’d forgotten how soul-destroying owning Ryan Howard can be.
@chata
Yeah I didn’t really go into that because I figured I’d rambled enough already, but basically, there are two categories where there is a large cluster directly ahead of me: ERA and SB. SV is pretty well distributed, but with four closers I figure I can make up good ground while also maintaining a good strikeout rate and not pushing my innings too hard. I’m already in 4th in SB, and there’s almost zero chance I fall further, I have around a 20 SB lead on the next best player, and I still have plenty of speed with Reyes, Kinsler, Wright, Dee and Alex Gordon, Abreu, etc. I may have less to gain without Asdrubal, but little to lose. In ERA, when I made the trade, it looked like I could be pretty confident that I’d jump at least 3 or 4 players if not more in ERA because of the clustered distribution directly ahead of me. If I can gain 6 points between SV and ERA, which is very reasonable based on the standings, that should put me between 86 and 90 points (I’m currently at 82.5), almost certainly a top three spot and a shot at first place.
@chata
Also, Hellickson was a major negative regression candidate, while I still have three strong positive regression candidates in Morrow, Garza, and Niese. Their xFIPs and SIERAs are all around a half run higher than their actual ERAs, and all three have been steadily improving as the year has gone along to some degree.
Peavy at the Twins or Minor at the Mets tomorrow? It’s h2h…
@Steve: Minor
@Mark:
re : C.C.
exactly what i was talking about .
girardi’s probably thinking that C.C.’s good for another 30 pitches .
no way would francona send beckett out there for the 5th inning .
@chata: In the process of earning his licks, though, he can also put up a couple of clean frames to make his final line more palatable. Most pitchers get yanked with 3.2 IP and 7 ER; Sabathia is now through 6 with 7 ER, and he may go another inning or two.
whats your oppinion on this beltre situation? i dont like how it looks
@Feeding the Abscess:
true dat .
and the possibility exists that he could also give up a couple of more runs .
but , from a non-fantasy point of view , francona is going to protect
against any further damage to his pitcher’s psyche .
I have been using rotoworld for years and I stubbled upon your site this year. I like yours way better. My one comment about your buy / sell posts. Half of my leagues have a maximum transactions of 50 a season and therefore I can’t just pick any guy up. It would be nice if you had a section for fliers versus long-term adds.
What do you think of the chance that Vinnie becomes the closer in Cleveland this year?
ROS, who do you like better, Minor or Holland?
@lopes: Looking at September now…
@jokerman: Thanks for the kind words! I hear ya on the flyers vs. long term adds, but I think it’s clear from the comments usually. Can’t really separate them, because everyone’s league is different. What’s a flyer for you is a long term add for someone in a deep league. Pestano could be the closer by Wednesday. Minor…
@Grey: Feels like Paula is just trying to earn some face time at poor Mike’s expense, as she’s been a bore all season. Just hope he we don’t spot any sores on his lip next week.
Grey:any chance Minor replaces Lowe in the rotation when Jar Jar comes back?….and if so,would you take him over Lube key?
@Grey:
what’s it gonna take for ellsbury to be a 1st rounder next year ?
25 – 45 ? (HR/SB)
30 – 50 ??
@lopes: September?….not good.not good at all.I had Weeks and Beltre in a points league and was cruising,replaced Beltre w/ Freese and Weeks w/ Infante who are both hurt now….Im down to Encarnacion and EY Jr.blech….I was really counting on Beltre coming back soon.
Chris Davis is playing second base tonight.
Coco Crisp just stole his third base of the night.
Hommy giving up 1st inning HR again.
I tried moving Hommy before his regression hit, oh well.
Make that four steals for Coco Crisp.
@Feeding the Abscess: I offered someone Gordon(w/3B eligibility)/Valverde for Hommy and was rejected.Kinda glad at this point.
Just putting it out there:
Hanson’s lost 1.5 MPH on his fastball from last season to this season. I’m personally avoiding him like the plague next year.
@Awesomus Maximus: Taking his virginity is a low blow. Literally, I guess.
@Oilcan Giuseppe: Don’t think so.
@chata: Unless something catastrophic happens, he’s already there. At least top 15.
@Feeding the Abscess: Davis at 2nd? Wacky… Gotta his Ks in the lineup somehow.
@Feeding the Abscess: Yeah, not a great sign.
Blanks with the GS. Heating up. I’m in panic mode, dropped him last week. Sad face emoticon
Cueto, Niese, Cobb and Narveson. Ugh.
And my RCL collapse is pretty much complete.
Good job Hanson
@Grey
I’ll never forgive you for making the regression police visit Jhoulys Chacin.
I think its about time for Hanson to go back on the DL. What a stinking pile of shit he has turned into.
Cuddyer or Crisp for UTIL?
Rasmus turning it around? He’s been decent the past few games in TOR.
@Grey: Let’s just hope Mike-Mike didn’t take her literally when she said, “Let’s do this… I need some face time.” I can’t imagine getting up close and personal with that catcher’s mitt.
Prado or Chavez at 3rd? Is Prado a must keep(for this season, I mean), he doesnt really impress me.
Put me on the sell list? You better take that shit back where you got it.
Which three of these guys do you like for the rest of the year: Gio, Oswalt, Beachy, Bedard, Niese?
Hanson has cost me dearly since the all star break (my team had a 3.05 ERA and it is now 3.38 thanks in large part to tommy) … now I am thinking i just have to bench him against the Cubs this week. Do I dare play Stauffer who has 2 away starts? Or risk Ubaldo vs. Det? Or Billz vs PHI? Which of the four do you think is the best option? thx
@Grey:
1. How long do you think Lawrie stays in the nine-hole, and where do you think they’ll put him in the lineup after they break him in? I’ve been riding the hot bat between Espinosa and Kelly Jo, but both of them are bordering on hypothermia right now and I’m tired of the bullschmidt.
2. Can you rank Fister, Worley and Chacin ROS?
Thanks. And phenomenal moustache, by the way. I recently had to put mine down after a shaving accident left it severely lopsided.
Weeks or Lawrie for my Util spot next week in my weekly league? Need AVG bad.
Bench Hanson for Annabelle next week in the same league? Annabelle’s not been great recently but man…Hommy’s stinking atm.
@TheNewGuy: And I mean Jemile obviously. And add Kipnis to that equation, so 2 out’ve 3 from these (needing AVG bad, real bad): J Weeks, Lawrie, Kipnis.
Thanks man
NL Only 4×4..12 team keeper league.
and here’s how it breaks down: I am 3rd in avg and 2nd is within reach. 5th in HR and could probably climb as high as 3rd. 6th in rbi’s and likely stuck there. 4th in steals with the top spot still within reach.
With all that in mind I have some questions:
1)
I am bidding of Goldschmidt and would need to drop a player, either the slumping Torres (still a steal potential?) or the slumping Nix (a few HRs recently, but avg has really dropped). Torres? Nix?
2)
If I don’t get Goldie, should I put a secondary bid on DLee and drop Torrest or Nix?
3)
I also have Doumit coming back. My catchers are Hernandez and Ruiz (both with retainable contracts; Doumit being a FA at the end of the season) Who are the best 2 going forward? Is it worth activating him and dropping Torres or Nix, or just let Doumit go, I have had no luck trying to trade him, being an FA and all.
@SetPhaserstoDL: Ha… Sorry, was bound to happen.
@Wilsonian: Depends what you need… Steals — Crisp.
@Awesomus Maximus: Ha! Also, what about Laurel? Isn’t the other girl so much better?
@ruah: Depends on some other factors, but I’ve never been a fan of Prado. Has to be a pretty deep league to keep him.
@The Sequential Hermaphrodite: First three…
@jack: Stauffer isn’t bad away. Actually, he’s been better away.
@Marty Funkhouser: Ha! You ranked the pitchers. Jays lineup is pretty crowded to be moving him. They might leave him there for a while.
@TheNewGuy: Lawrie… Sure…
@elwood blues: Nix…Yes, still Nix…Doumit and Ruiz…Just drop Hernandez for Doumit.
which closer out of:
league, storen or santos?
@paulzone: Santos
@Grey: so i am going to trade ibanez for santos for some extra saves…i thought santos too but there’s been some Sale chatter…thanks
@Grey:
Ramon not Ruiz.. interesting. You see fewer at-bats for Hernandez going forward?
@Josh Beckett: You got a big correction coming tonight, buddy.
Hello Grey.
I want to lose Colon (not to be confused with a loose Colon) but I am not sure who to grab. Would Minor be a worthwhile add? If so, that would be about the fourth time I have owned him.
Also, what makes you think that Pestano is going to take over for Perez? I could really use another Closer down the stretch and this would be huge.
Thanks much Grey.
@paulzone: Cool
@elwood blues: Eh… It’s a coin flip. Go with Ramon if you like, I was just going on Ruiz’s strong 2nd half last year, but he hasn’t done much.
@yankees2011: Yes… He might take over, no definite. Perez has been a mess recently and the Indians are trying to get into the playoffs.
hey Grey, thanks for responding re: Prado. Only a 10 team roto. Chavez seems to be hitting well in that Yankee lineup and Prado is boring. Only other real options out there are Wigginton, Alvarez, Glass Chipper, Turner, Nunez(but Chavez plays instead)…..basically nothing.
Only other thing would to be slide Bonifacio up to 3rd and grab another SS off the wire like Furcal, Pennington, Bartlett, Gordon(if healthy)….yeah, not much there either, and drop Prado.
Grey:8 team points league….Gallardo or Victorino/Pineda?
Im a bit over my IP limit so i would have to skip a few starts from Gallardo anyway,so Pineda’s IP losing a few starts shouldnt make much difference…..Im just not sure because pitching is really the key in this league,specifically W’s.
I currently have Crawford,Gordon,Ellsbury,Arencibia,Jennings,Lind,Espinosa,Heyward for 3 OF and 2 UTL.
Crisp hurt himself in his escapades last night. Potential DL stint with a strained calf.
@Grey: Meh… neither is my pint of Guinness, to be honest. Without looking up the rosters, I’m having a hard time thinking of a Challenge female I found legitimately attractive (meaning, I’d actively pursue in real life), other than Coral. I generally find the (supposed) hotties borderline at best, and the fact that they whore themselves out for 30 seconds of quasi-fame pushes them to the “no thanks” pile.
Jenn… yeah, I understand the sex appeal, and that makes her mini-fling with Baba Booey’s younger brother hilarious. I could see making an alcohol fueled run at those silicans, but once sobriety is in the picture, mine or hers… well, better judgement would kick in with the former and her personality would serve as a sufficient c-block with the latter.
That reminds me, did you ever get a chance to peruse that horrific list of “The Hottest Women of Real World” (or something like that) I posted a link to a while back?
@Grey:
san diego
23-36 27-28
home road
time to re-adjust the hodgepadre concept ?
that’s a pretty miserable record at home .
Reckon Parnell’s getting this closing gig anytime soon or we free to drop him? Izzy ain’t been too sharp recently, and seriously, what are they achieving by keeping Izzy in there, give the young guy a shot.
@Grey: Roto Standings are getting tight, I only have a 2pt lead sitting in first still though. If you could give me some advice on offense and defense it would be much appreciated Grey!
C-Wieters
1B-Cabrera
2B-Zobrist
3B-Longoria
SS-Castro
OF-Holliday, Morse, Stanton,
Ut- Sandoval & Bruce
Bn- Hart
I’m pretty far behind in SB so that is one category I can catch up in, would you drop anyone for R Davis or Fowler? Ryan Zimmerman and Reddick are also available..
Pitching is definitely my sore spot with a need for Wins, ERA & WHIP.
SP-Masterson, Scherzer, Niemann, Vogelsong, Luebke, Hanson, G Gonzalez
RP- Storen, Feliz, Street, Nunez & Farnsworth
The team behind me is close in saves but after that it severely drops off so i could lose my worst closer or let go of Gonzalez or Hanson who have both been struggling but could make a comeback? Waivers includes Buehrle, Procello, Guerra (closer to replace street maybe), Sale, Cecil, Harrison, Holland…
What do you think Grey? I have -40IP which is why I have a large pitching staff…
@Awesomus Maximus@Awesomus Maximus: theres only a few Real World females I can think of off the top of my head….Svetlana,Lori and definitely Coral.
@Grey: If you go to rotowire and look at Kuroda’s page, his most recent blurb claims he shut out the Dodgers in his last start.
I realize they get shutout in most of his starts, but come on.
@Nick: Ryan Zimmerman’s on waivers??
Pitch Nova on tues in a standard mixer vs the Halos? Trying to decide whether to pitch him or cut him for extra hitters for tommorow.
mets are running out of infielders .
1st reyes … and now turner (ugly late slide by costanza)
@Oilcan Giuseppe: It’s obviously a matter of taste, but Jamie Chung, Jacinda Barret, and (though I didn’t watch Paris) Mallory Snyder would have to be in there.
Would you drop Annabelle or Beachy for Latos. Dude has had a TON of quality starts lately.
@ruah: Bonifacio and Furcal would be my move.
@Oilcan Giuseppe: Eh, you have so much speed and not enough power as it is.
@Feeding the Abscess: Thanks for the heads up!
@Awesomus Maximus: Oh, yeah…I perused it. A few times. I think Jenn’s really hot, fakeys or not. Her with Baba Jr. is ridiculous.
@chata: It’s about what the pitchers are doing, never said it was a good way to get Wins.
@TheNewGuy: Might get a shot after Izzy gets his 300th. Depends how badly you need saves.
@Nick: NO idea how many teams… But looks like an 8 team league. Zimmerman over Hart, Fowler over Morse if you want steals…
@Oilcan Giuseppe: Svetlana was a good one too.
@Terrence Mann: Hehe
@TheNewGuy: Yup
@Wilsonian: Anibal
Giavotella or EYJr at 2B?
@ruah: Young
@Grey: Jenn is definitely a type, and if you’re into that type, she’s a knockout. Svetlana has since lost a bunch of weight, if memory serves, and looks a little odd (I prefer a figure to a stick figure), but she was fun to look at when she was on the show.
@Grey: or would you drop Cuddyer who’s a bench bat for Latos?
Looking to bid on replacements for Rubby and Nicasio in 12-team NL Only. Basically no pitching limit (500 starts) and as usual my ERA and WHIP are so bad that I’m not worried about those categories. So just hoping for Wins and Ks. Who would be your top 2 choices from Morton, Lyles, Rogers, Eovaldi, Leblanc?
Thanks!
Crap.. I missed the Chase Headley fractured finger. Maybe I could swap him for Prado.
Sounds like Jesus’ call-up is pretty imminent. When he gets the call would you drop the other Montero/ Arencibia for him? Have both those guys in other leagues and just wondering whether he’d be worth replacing em, Miggy’s been very cold lately.
@elwood blues:
I have Headley for $14 and i’d like to hold onto that next year.
There’s one team that has Prado for $8 and Magehee who will be a FA.
I guess I could always hold onto Headley and if lands on DL.. activate Doumit and move Ruiz to 3b.. yes he’s played one game there!
what the f**k is wrong w/ Price?….
also….I’ll say it again,W’s is such a bs category.I needed one W to tie the category today.I started Felix,Price,Norris,Scherzer and Oswalt.As of right now Price,Norris and Scherzer are done,and even though Felix looks great, Seattle is unlikely to score the two runs necessary for a win.my best shot of getting just ONE is Oswalt-the guy who hasnt pitched in six weeks and is facing Lincecum.
fantasy baseball:making prematurely balding men lose their hair quicker.
@Oilcan Giuseppe: Oswalt beginning to unravel.looks like its gonna be 0 for 5.
Big Erv on for his 3rd straight CG.
There’s 3 aces in Anaheim now.
Is Norris dropable (is that a word) at this point for a guy like Hughes or Cecil?
why is Oswalt still out there?
@Oilcan Giuseppe: seriously,he’s given up 12 hits already!
Jesus. This game. Yesterday I ask Grey whether to go for Peavy or Minor. He says Minor. Fair call – it’s the way I was leaning.
My opponent, of course, picks up Peavy.
@Grey: 12 team league, sorry Grey! Does that change your mind?
Instead of “James McStreamer”, how about the shorter, catchier, “McStreamy”? Fits into the fine canon established by that TV show, (Your) Anatomy, Grey.
Trade Jennings for Beachy? I’d be replacing Jennings with Ichiro, and Jhoulys with Beachy.
This ain’t the same Felix as yester-years. Despite the 12 punchouts largely from his offspeed pitches, his fastball velocitys way down this year- 92 rather than 95. His run support has been quite frankly wretched, but he hasn’t been as good this year either.
Guess some of that milage is catching up on his arm already…hopefully for us with him in keepers, it’s partly a case of wearing down at the end of the year.
@Grey:
Going forward?
Espinosa or Kelly Johnson? Standard, 12-team roto.
in case reyes is out, who’s a better SS replacement:
nunez or furcal
Hello Grey et al,
I need to add a SS. I dropped Nunez earlier this week but could add him again (although his benching for Chavez gets frustrating) or add say Betancourt, Furcal, or even Gordon. My SBs seem to be better now, so Gordon would not be as valuable.
What do you think? Anyone else please feel free to chime in. I’m all ears.
Thanks much.
@elwood blues:
So no on prado. he’s countering with my $22 Marcum, $14Headley, and $8 Torres for $10Vogelsong, McGahee (FA), and $1 Pagan.
Daniel Murphy out for the season thanks to a dirty slide from Constanza. What was Body Suit Man doing at Citi Field?
beckett just surprised the shizz out of chavez !
@chata:
and you , too
adams with the save,hope he keeps it
Crawford starting to hit again. Please let it continue. Please?
Mini Donkey brays again
Will Venable strikes again on the road against RHP
Couldn’t be happier with the performances I got from Felix and Magic
@Grey: weekly roto league, need runs, sbs and avg. which two of these 3 do you start?
lawrie (3 vs oak, 3 vs ana)
jennings (4 vs kc, 3 @ nyy)
eyj (4 @ cin, 3 @ stl)
thanks…
@Awesomus Maximus: Yeah, Jenn’s my type.
@Wilsonian: Sure
@VinWins: Eovaldi, Lyles
@TheNewGuy: Can lose Miguel…
@Oilcan Giuseppe: Ha
@Derrick: Cecil
@J.Ro: Nice
@Mark: Eh
@Eddy: Johnson
@paulzone: Furcal
@yankees2011: Furcal
@Awesomus Maximus: Ha
@herschel: First two…
