Don't be shellfish...FacebookTwitterGoogle+

We at Razzball realize that exporting our views across the country has damaging consequences on the blogosphere. To help make amends, we are reaching out to leading team blogs and featuring their locally blogged answers to pressing 2013 fantasy baseball questions regarding their team. We feel this approach will be fresher, more sustainable, and require less energy consumption (for us anyway). The 2013 Dodgers Fantasy Baseball Preview comes courtesy Mike Petriello from Mike Scioscia’s Tragic Illness.

1) Carl Crawford was a huge fantasy asset as recently as 2010 but since then has taken a nosedive in both the real and the fantasy world.  With all that said, it’s sounding like he’ll be fully healthy and in the starting lineup on opening day.  What should fantasy owners expect from Crawford in 2013?  Will we see a return to glory or more of 2011 and 2012?

Is it a cop-out to say that the answer is probably “a happy medium”? Because that’s how I’m leaning. After the last two years, it’s unlikely to expect that we’re going to see the heights that he reached back in the day with Tampa, especially now that he’s into his 30s and coming off major surgery. That said, Boston never seemed to be a good fit from the start, and attempting to play through an injured wrist and elbow couldn’t have helped. Now that he’s supposedly healthy, away from the Boston microscope, and in a situation where he’s not expected to be “the man”, one hopes that we’ll see a rebound. If he can coax out a .280/.325/.420 line with 10 homers, 30 steals, and good defense, he’ll be a valuable piece — even if he’s not quite earning his contract.

2) Matt Kemp scares us.  That first sentence was going to solely be about his injury but Google news searches lead me to links about a return to Rihanna and brings back painful 2010 memories.  Are there any concerns that Kemp won’t be ready for opening day or healthy enough to produce for fantasy owners in 2013?

Kemp insists he’ll be ready for Opening Day, even if he’s limited in spring training. The problem is that his shoulder injury was a serious one, enough to require surgery, and we’ve seen shoulder injuries limit power in the next season. So while I’m confident that Kemp is going to be a whole lot better than the mess who struggled down the stretch after hurting himself slamming into the Colorado center field wall, it might take some time to get back to full strength. That alone could hurt his prospects, though I’ll be more than happy to scoop him up if anyone actually lets him out of the first round.

3) Adrian Gonzalez has seen his power decrease dramatically over the last two years, hitting only 18 HRs last year in 684 plate appearances with half his games played in what is considered to be a hitter’s ballpark.  Is there any hope for fantasy owners that A-Gonz returns to form in terms of power and what are your expectations for him in 2013?

I have hope. I mean, after what it took to get him, I have to. No, I don’t expect him to be the MVP candidate that terrorized baseball in San Diego, but then again, he doesn’t really need to be. Part of the appeal of the trade, which often seems to be forgotten, is that James Loney is awful and there was absolutely nothing available on the free agent market this winter. Mike Napoli’s busted hip? Adam LaRoche? A return engagement with Loney? Meh. That doesn’t make Gonzalez better, per se, but it does explain further why it was so important to get him. I’ve got him for .300/.350/.450 with 25 homers and great defense, and I’ll be happy with that.

4) The Dodgers spent big money on Zack Greinke but that wasn’t the surprise move by the Dodgers this off-season.  That award goes to signing Ryu Hyun-Jin to a 6 year, $36 million dollar contract which doesn’t include the $25.7 mill they paid just to negotiate with him.  Many are projecting him as an overall SP3 at best.  With all that aside, what is Ryu’s future role with the Dodgers considering they have plenty of starting arms at their disposal and what do you think he can provide fantasy owners in 2013?

Ryu’s a starter. No doubt. The Dodgers didn’t sign him to be a reliever, and they’re contractually prohibited from sending him to the minors. Though they do have a ton of starters, they’re all but certain to deal one or two before the season (likely Aaron Harang or Chris Capuano). As for what Ryu can bring, it’s anyone’s guess, though I’d note that “SP3 at best” isn’t a bad thing, and would make him valuable for that amount of money. From what we know, he has excellent control, so even if he doesn’t strike out a ton, his K/BB and WHIP should be decent.

5) What’s the most likely event to occur in 2013 for this Dodger team:
A) Dodgers make the World Series.
B) The awesomeness of this Dee Gordon image finally gets old.
C) Kenley Jansen will finish the year with the most saves for the Dodgers.
D) Chad Billingsley finally heals from injury but management questions whether or not he’s hungry enough to be a part of the starting rotation.  He proceeds to eat Ted Lilly and Chris Capuano to retain the SP5 slot
E) The pressure is finally off Andre Ethier and he puts up another 30 HR season.

C, probably. That Dee Gordon image will never get old — hell, I think I might have made it in the first place — and while I like the Dodgers’ chances, I’ll never guarantee that any team will make the World Series. As for Billingsley, if cannibalizing teammates is what it takes to get that elbow injury to heal, I’m fine with that.

Would prefer to have a bit more upside on your staff at the tail end. I’d lose Dempster for Andrew Cashner and I’m not a huge fan of Napoli but it’s hard to gauge who else you had available in a keeper. Not really hip on Prado especially since you already have a 3B/SS/2B. He’s a nice piece for a team for his flexibility but he’s too costly because of it, especially in yahoo leagues. Would’ve preferred going for another upside guy there who can produce more than a 15/10 season.

Overall, team looks like it’ll be a little light on steals but that can be fixed via waivers as it’s clear there are plenty of 7 HR/30 SB types floating around for the taking. Also feels like Milone/Ryu/Griffin are all very similar low-K pitchers that will help with WHIP but not much else. Keep your eye on K/9 guys that surprise. In the end it’s a solid start to the year for you, just be mindful of those needs.

      @Sky:
Thanks Sky. Perez was on the board at that time as well but wanted someone a little more veteran plus I liked how Nap is going to get some util days off from behind the plate, would you have gone Perez there?

The Cabrera pick was a little last second as I was running out of time debating between him or an arm like Haren/Anderson/Wilson but liked the fact that the league is daily and I could plug him into any spot so I probably overpaid because of it. Really only good offensive players were guys like Cruz and Rios and I was already heavy at OF so I went versatility.

Ill need to hit waivers as the season guys on to pluck a heavy K/9 up or snag a hold/saves guy like Robertson or Fujikawa

        Sky says:

@2 Cups 1 Braun: Sorry, should’ve been clearer about why on Naps: I like the idea of Napoli but I don’t trust that hip. Worried he’ll get drafted to be that DH catcher who plays 150+ but maybe only nets you 120-130 due to that injury concern. I probably would’ve gone Perez there but I completely understand your thinking.

I assume you meant Prado when you said Cabrera. Yeah, he has that charm to him, that’s just where I would’ve aimed for my next patch of guys I wanted further down the road. I play in a deep 12 team 8 keeper where we play 2 at every infield position + 2 UTIL and 5 OF (LF,CF,RF,OF,OF) and he went in the 4th last night there as well. That’s why I was saying he went too high. 10 team you don’t really need that kind of flexibility. I’d rather just rely on waivers.

Yeah, how many DL spots you have? Anyone draft Luebke? I’d snag him and throw him in your DL spot for now if you have that available. QS makes things much better drafting a Padres pitcher that’s actually talented.

        • 2 Cups 1 Braun says:
          (link)

@Sky: Correct on Prado as I had Asdrubal in my head for some reason. Luebke actually went in the 16th as people love to speculate especially with 3 DL spots. I don’t have any MI in my league but have always loved that guy I could stash and plug for the guy who decides not to play for the day. Unfortunately a bunch of non-streamer guys banded together so we are running a Monday/Friday waiver wire pickup process were before I could drop/add immediately up to 100 times.

I did like Perez but I feel he is all upside with little history under his belt but I guess I could be wrong. In the event Naps hip blows up, I can snag something good from the wire.

Jesus Montero – Soon to be dropped as a guy autodrafted 3 catchers
          Jonathan Lucroy
          Ryan Doumit
          Alex Avila
          J.P. Arencibia

Gotcha. In the end, just didn’t seem like a need with Prado even with that but I guess he’s nice for daily management.

No arguments about Perez but I think too many people are saying the same thing about Napoli and only one guy is entering the season with a bum hip similar to what’s been aching ARod. But as you show, 10 team theres a lot of catcher depth to be had.

Any chance of Puig up before expanded rosters? Spring grain of salt blah blah but he looks to be a potential beast and I would venture to say there will be a fair amount of injuries in this outfield with a pretty short depth chart. Thoughts?

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

@Cam_13: Think it would take some permanent/serious injuries for them to go that route too soon. It’s possible, just not something I’d concern myself with this early unless it’s a deep keeper league.

There is one closer left on the Free Agent list that i can snag and either keep or use as part of a trade for a save needing owner. There is one guy in our league literally hoards closers.

I need to drop one of the following though –

Brandon Belt, Jeremy Hellickson, AJ Burnett, Trevor Cahill.

Would you drop one of those for Brandon league. If so Who and Why?

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

@Gareth: If one guy has that many closers, he probably has better ones than League to barter with. If you’re making the move to pick up League, it’s to have him on your team and hope he doesn’t lose the role to Kenley.

I’d jettison Cahill or Belt depending on the needs of your team. Since you only showed me those 4, I have no idea how much you need or don’t need a pitcher or hitter. I’d be inclined to make it Cahill for the simple fact he’s steady but nothing special with limited upside.

  5. Jack Full of Hate says:
    (link)

I saw this league with these rules attached, it perks my interest what do you think?

    1. DISPERSAL: At the end of each month, two teams are eliminated, and their players are dispersed and made available to the remaining teams. Usually the teams eliminated are the bottom two teams (see item 6 however). Note also that the Commissioner cannot be eliminated. Those teams eliminated will be locked by the Commissioner for any future player activity. At the time the players are dispersed, the waiver priority is temporarily reset, such that the worst surviving team gets first choice of dispersal players, the next worst gets second choice, etc. At the end of each subsequent month, two teams are again eliminated. By giving first choice to the remaining worst team allows teams who are doing poorly every opportunity to catch up and compete for the rest of the year.

Some managers in the past have forgotten to participate in the dispersal draft on the first of each month, and / or have not read pertinent messages regarding the draft. Remember, you snooze, you lose!

    2. TIE BREAKERS: Where two or more teams are tied at the end of each month, an H2H match between the affected teams will be applied. The team winning the tie-breaker will be deemed to be the better ranked team. If still tied after the H2H match, the following tie-breaker rules will be applied: 1. lower e.r.a. 2. higher rbi’s 3. higher wins.

3: WAIVER PRIORITY: Except for each dispersal draft, the waiver priority will use YAHOO’s standard methodology. When dispersal occurs, I will record what the standard priority is, and then manually reset it in reverse order of standing, i.e. at the end of April, team 18 will have priority 1, team 17 will have priority 2, … team 1 will have priority 18. Dispersal occurs on the first of each month. On the 2nd of each month, the day following dispersal, the waiver priority will be set back to what it was prior to the dispersal.

4: UNDISPERSED PLAYERS: Any players unclaimed in the dispersal draft will become FA’s if they don’t get claimed. They will not return to the eliminated teams’ rosters.

    5. TRADES: The league settings say Commissioner approval on trades. In fact, I won’t disallow any trade unless the managers object. The purpose here is that if managers want to veto a trade, they must do so publicly. If four vetoes are posted, I will cancel the trade (three vetoes once we have 12 or fewer teams). The purpose here is that you cannot veto anonymously – if you don’t want a trade to go through, you must say so publicly. Private E-mails to me will be ignored. Also, the two parties to the trade cannot veto their own trade.

    6. DEPORTMENT & ACTIVITY: This league will be as active as you want to make it. Intelligent trash talking is encouraged. However, if your only means of communication is foul language, insulting a person’s sexuality, religion, etc., this league is not for you. Also, if you remain inactive, this league is not for you. So while its most likely that the bottom two teams will be eliminated each month, inactivity or boorish behaviour will also be considered.

strange, but not crazy, its a 20 team

@Jack Full of Hate: It’s like Amazing Race for fantasy baseball! Not a bad concept but seems highly involved. If you have the time, it sounds fun but probably not something I’d dive in on. Drafting 3 teams is my max then I basically have to do it once a month for the rest of the year? Yikes. Still, cool concept and I can easily see a following for it.

When I said the guy hoards closers I meant he’s the one in need, and probably has missed seeing League available on the list. The issue is he only drafted one closer on draft day (Grilli), and has been snagging back ups or handcuffs the past few weeks (Santon, Janssen, Pestano, Fujikawa).

My team is pretty much set. I have 2 closers in Street and Betancourt that are solid. I dropped casey janssen for Frieri (I was sick of the injury race with Santos). I also got Parnell, leaving only League as a free Agent. So 4 Closers.

My Staring pitching is Felix, Gio, Haren, Lincecum, Gallardo. Bench – AJ Burnett, Cahill, Hellickson.

My Hitters – Santana, Mauer, Votto, Weeks, A-Ram, S. Castro, Stanton, Jones, Choo, Reddick, Gardner. (U) Swisher, (MI) A. Cabrera, (CI) Goldshmidt. BENCH – Belt, Utley, Lawrie.

    Its a 10 TEAM 2 starting catcher, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, 5 starting OF, CI, MI, U League with 9 Pitching spots and 6 bench spots (hitter/pitcher).

I was thinking of keeping League and dropping Belt. Then offering that guy either Parnell or Frieri, along with either Lincecum, Burnett, Hellickson or cahill in a 2 for 1 deal for Nelson Cruz so I streamline and upgrade.

I’m suprised you are so down on Cahill. The guy was lights out for Oakland and his Strike out rates are ticking upward. He’s also the number 2 for Arizona. I’m actually down on AJ Burnett out of the 3, although Hellickson may be due for a regression.

Hope this clarifies my situation. also a critique of my team would be appreciated!

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

@Gareth: Yeah, I’d throw Parnell in there and see if it works. I’m a fan of Frieri over Parnell holding the job.

Not down on Cahill, you gave me a list of guys and I thought Cahill and Belt were probably the easiest to jettison depending on your needs. Belt makes sense too. Cahill is getting looked over everywhere, he’s a good value if he falls to you just not someone I’d freak about.

You went higher on your catchers than I would’ve but it didn’t really hurt your hitters overall. You have some pitchers I wouldn’t have targeted on draft day – Haren & Lincecum – but it’s not a bad pitching staff. If you can get League and swap Lincecum/Parnell for Zim you’ll look a lot better on that front. Overall, should be competitive.

I passed on Zimmerman but should be able to snag Peavy and frazier with my next two picks. and frazier gives me LF and 3rd, so whatever the draft gives me later

Nice. I nabbed him in my keeper last night to pair with Edwin (2 of every IF position). Here’s to that .260 average he should’ve had last year.

Hard to tell from the layout but it looks like you have way too many bench hitters for a standard 10 team league (which I’m assuming this is). Also looks like you have only 1 closer unless there’s recent news about Soriano that I’m unaware of.

Team looks solid but 10 team league types typically do when they’re that shallow. Nice pitching staff and solid hitters. Should be competitive.

Nothing to hate about that team at all. Hopefully Niese/Gee give you SP3 seasons. I’m not as sold on Ryu as others but for a 20 team league, that is a mighty fine team. You’ll make it through the first few go arounds for sure and then stack up as needed.

      • Jack Full of Hate says:

@Sky: Thats my plan, own all offensive cats except steals and tinker my way into respectable pitching numbers. There are still arms available too. I put a waiver in for old Bud Norris, i can’t believe i missed that. Some stream options available. These guys went crazy on MI, so I had to make something out of that

        • Sky

          Sky says:

You did fine for a 20 teamer. Your pitching should get you just enough to survive and vulture someone else’s staff. MI is ridiculously meh this year, even in regular leagues. Ignoring it was the best route to go.

          • Jack Full of Hate says:

Who has more upside Bradley jr, Gomes, or Colby R? 14 team yahoo normal five plus xbh they are only a bench player. My outfield is stacked, thanks for the advice earlier I took the Cargo and Craig for Miggy deal.
I already have Colby and would only play him as my second util and only vs rhp. I would do the same with Gomes vs lhp, Bradley seems to interesting too pass on.

    • Birdmann says:

@Birdmann: Craig is my first util and I have an outfield of Jennings BJ and Cargo and I have Davis at first. I like to have bench hitters that I can play the splits.

@SmokeTNT: do you have any needs to fill? If not hold Trout

@Birdmann: Clayton and Goldy is the best of those from a pure players involved

      • SmokeTNT says:
        (link)

        @Birdmann: My lineup is:

        Posey
        Hosmer
        Rutledge
        Tulo
        Sandoval
        BJ Upton
        Justin Upton
        Brandon Belt
        Adam Dunn
        Mike Trout
        Jurickson Profar
        Jeff Keppinger

        Lincecum
        Parker
        Dempster
        Ryu
        Zito
        Chapman
        Romo
        Betancourt
        Jannsen
        Fujikawa
        Teheran
        Casilla

        (holds count, 8×8)

So I need an ace SP, but starting to think I may need a 3B soon, and might need to go for a package with someone like Middlebrooks or Trumbo.

20 teamers are always gonna leave you feeling like you a missing something. SP are either gonna be amazing with Moore/Lincecum bouncing back or you’re gonna feel the hurt.

Overall, it’s not a bad team for how deep a league it is. Hopefully you’ll be able to dive in on closers and surprise starters as the season goes on.

Big dynasty trade I need your opinion on… which side wins?
10 team dynasty.. the round value is next to each player.

    I receive: Hosmer(3), Jordan Zimmerman(9), Hyun Jin-Ryu(26)
    I give: A.Rizzo(21), Tommy Milone(13), Josh Beckett(22), Steve Cishek(23)

Im a tad light on SP so Im leaning towards accepting this trade. My hitting is stacked. I like Rizzo more than Hosmer esp with the round value diff but I think my staff of Stras, Sale, Cobb, Burnett, Hughes, Cashner, Doubront could really use Zimmerman to solidify it. What do you think? Thanks.

ooph, I don’t like the value of Hosmer but I think it’s the better side. I’d go that way.
