Pirates SS Konnor Griffin has been the early talk of spring training after blasting two moonshots in the same game followed by Pittsburgh leaking their desire to sign him long term. Translation: they know he should be part of the opening day lineup but would like to maximize whatever leverage they have here. We’ve seen this move a lot, and I get it. I actually think it makes sense for most young players to offer a year or two of free agency to make a ton of money earlier than they would’ve and have stable income across time. Decent money management is all you’d need for your whole family to live like royalty for a hundred years, minimum. Why quibble over the dollars beyond that? It’s a little different for a Pittsburgh player. Humans like to win, or at least compete.
Rockies OF Zac Veen kicked some addiction issues this off-season and gained something like 500 pounds of muscle (reportedly more than 40 pounds). He looks good early this spring with two home runs in six games, but the real benefit of this life change would be his response to the season-long daily grind, in my opinion. Should also help with his response to slumps. It’s hard to replace old habits with new ones, and I wouldn’t be surprised if more time on the ballfield is often his response to newly found free time that used to get filled with a substance or two.
Rockies 1B TJ Rumfield has three home runs, slashing .417/.533/1.167 through 15 plate appearances. Spring training doesn’t matter unless it does, and for a guy like Rumfield, it certainly does. This new Colorado front office brought in a few new guys and might be a little extra invested in seeing their off-season targets succeed, which figures to help this former Yankee farmhand make his case for an extended look. At 6’5” 225 pounds from the left side, he makes more contact than the typical big man and has been better than league average at each of his last four stops in the New York system.
Nationals 3B Brady House has just eight plate appearances but has already hit two home runs. He hit just four in 73 games last season on the way to a 56 wRC+. The 11th overall pick out of high school in 2021, House has better bones than that. This fresh new front office and coaching staff could help renovate his approach and make a big difference. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s a better-than-league-average regular in year two. He just got traded for Brewers OF Garrett Mitchell in the Highlander Dynasty Invitational, and he’s probably available on the cheap in your leagues.
I just double checked the books, and there’s no law that says Detroit can’t open the season with Kevin McGonigle at shortstop. They have Zach McKinstry and Javier Baez on the roster, but they’ve both lived that utility player life and probably fit a first-division roster better in that role. McGonigle is 2-for-2 with a double, triple and a walk today, slashing .462/.533/.769 on the spring. Gonna be tough to send him down if he’s still hitting like this in a few weeks.
Yesterday I watched Twins RHP Taj Bradley wipe away a left-handed hitter with a 98 mile per hour fastball up in the zone and wished I had him on some teams. He got nickel and dimed the next inning, but he revamped his delivery and started putting in the homework it takes to retain a big league rotation spot. Arrows up for Bradley with a full-season to refine his craft in a relatively weak division. Click here to read more about Bradley’s developmental journey.
Red Sox LHP Connelly Early hit 97 in that same game during a snappy nine-pitch inning. He looks awesome. It’s February, and I love baseball, so a lot of this stuff looks pretty awesome to these Midwestern winter eyes, but I work hard to separate the yay-baseball feelings from the holy-shizz-lookit-this-guy feelings. Still good if not quite so smooth in his second inning, during which the announcer started talking about how Cam Schlittler got tons of hype while Early was also good without the hype. Real little brother stuff. They’re playing the Twins in this game. Not a Yankee to be found on the broadcast.
Speaking of New York, two Yankees’ MONSTARS, OF Spencer Jones and RHP Carlos Lagrange, are putting on a show during their time on this planet: Jones hitting preposterous bombs and Lagrange touching 102.4 while dispatching each hitter with ease. I wouldn’t like the look of it if I were that Boston broadcaster.
Thanks for reading!

What’s up Itch? Wondering what you think of Ethan Salas. We’re able to keep up to 5 prospects heading into our draft, and I’ve got 4 that I’m keeping for sure (Chase Burns, Sasaki, Hope, Hagen Smith) – Salas is my only question mark. He’s only eligible as a prospect keeper for this year, meaning if he provides no value this year, then I’m better off letting him go and getting an extra reserve pick at the draft. Do you see any reason to keep Salas around for just this year?
Hey Milarky,
I think you’re better off letting him go.
In 2027 drafts Griffin, McGonigle, and Wetherholt go top _?
Griffin top 25, McG and Wetherholt top 100
Hey itch
Would I be crazy to move on from Gilbert in a keeper for Bubba Chandler, Chase Burns and Jhoan Duran?
15 team keep 11, I would drop Mike Harris and Gore or Sonny Grey.
Rest of my keepers are: Yandy Diaz, Keachall, Bregman, Gunnar, PCA, Sheehan, Gore/Grey, Munoz
Thanks man
Hi Nightpandas,
I wouldn’t say it’s crazy, but I’d probably hold Gilbert in that scenario.
I don’t want to drop Gore or Michael Harris.
Veen might’ve gained 40 lbs, but its physically impossible to gain 40 lbs of lean muscle mass within an offseason naturally!
I don’t know what kind of steroids would be required to do it; but even with them I have my doubts! ?
Agreed on that number seeming a little suspect.
Perhaps they took the count starting from his lowest recorded weight or something–not necessarily where he was in September.
Agreed. He’s definitely getting a “random” PEDS test soon, though!
Morning Itch! Thanks for the ST write up! Lots of good info. I was able to pickup Rumfield
and Bradley in a couple of leagues.
Thanks!
(Wish I could scoop Rumfield a few places that have waivers locked right now . . . )
Hey Itch, been a long time (B. Witt days) and speakin of a long time, you got anything on Daniel Espino? Noticed he is starting today. Just turned 25 but still feels like a rookie. Been through a lot (injuries/surgeries) and has finally worked his way back. Really excited to see him pitch again, think he has something special. Could regain his electric stuff, health permitting
I’m never out a guy that talented, especially in that org.
Good morning itch.
Just offered rockies C Goodman for my Torkelson
Good deal or no
Im deep at 1B
Only have 1 C on my roster in a 2 C league
I’d rather have Goodman than Tork.
Here’s to hoping Zac Veen can make out like Josh Hamilton
Yeah I’m rooting for him.
Bradley just doesn’t have the control/command to be a top of the rotation guy. He will be great for 4-5 games and then the K’s disappear. He becomes way too hittable and is a tee ball pitcher. If he goes undrafted or really late, he’s a good find. At his ADP (124 NFBC), makes him a hard pass for me.
The unknowable piece about Bradley is that is sounds like he wasn’t working real hard at his craft with Tampa. Perhaps the career rerouting hones his focus.
Take this list down RIGHT NOW! Too much good intel.
Brady House is going to break out this year. Free 3B in most drafts. My money is on the over for HR. 13+…. 70r-70rbi.
I have Abimelec Ortiz as my 1B, and I pick next email draft. Carlos Santana, Nathaniel Lowe are there. I may wait for a shot of Rumfield.
Oh! Whisenhunt changed his mechanics, is throwing 96-97, and added a pitch he learned from someone good. No longer TIPPING his pitches either. Buy low.
Yeah I saw that one earlier this spring. He got hit around a bit if I remember right, but yeah that velo could make a huge difference.
Thanks!
Yeah I think you could wait a beat to get Rumfield, but I would want to add him to that mix.
Veen looks like he’s put on some big boy muscle lol the way he’s hitting, he may be this year’s Rockies breakout…I hope the McGonigle breaks camp…has there ever been an 80 grade hit tool prospect completely skip AAA? LaGrange is looking great, I wonder if the Yanks have him go a couple innings in the pen and then unleash him as a starter by midseason…Yanks rotation is talented but I’m not sure we see the whole staff healthy at the same time
What if Cole looks like Alcantara or Strider, if he has no setbacks? Rodon should be ok, but that’s an elbow! Gil is the walk king, and Warren is a fifth! Weathers is hurt EVERY year. Fried is great and Schlittler is young but looks solid. Lots of “ifs” = lots of innings in NY!
Veen quit drinking. Nice to see him taking things seriously!
Definitely possible
I do think Lagrange could wind up in the pen this season.
12 team dynasty 5×5 love the sprit of recovery and I am pulling for Zac Veen…he is available in our draft process this evening…I have 8 spots to fill should I take a flyer? Thanks itch for the consistently great content!
Double dip…do you think Elmer Rodriquez gets a look this year?
Yeah, and I think he’ll be pretty good right away.
Oh yes I think the time to take a flier on Veen is now.
