When is it acceptable to pay the max price for a starting pitcher? In cash games, it’s easier to do, but it can work out in GPPs as well. Pitching is where you can rack up a 60 point outburst if the match-up is right. Max Scherzer ($12,000) checks a lot of those boxes today. At home? Check. Weak opponent? Check. The Brew-Crew sit in the bottom five in team OPS and the top five in team strikeouts. Strikeout upside? Hi….have you met Max? 12 K/9 is pretty delicious. Vegas favorite? Check. Low Vegas run total? Also check. This is setting up for a big day for Mad Max, the only real question is if the Nats can put together some runs and get him the win.

Eduardo Rodriguez, SP: $7,500 – If you’d rather stack your bats and hope a cheap pitcher hits, E-Rod is where I’m looking. He’ll be my GPP pitcher of choice. The Sawx face the Marlins and while Eddie has had some rough outings recently, the Marlins should be just the cure for what ails him.
Salvador Perez, C/1B: $2,400 – Finding a clean-up hitter for under $2,500 is a treat and that’s where Perez typically finds himself. Granted, this is the Royals lineup we’re talking about, but still. Matt Shoemaker is going for the Twinkies and I like the Royals to surprise the Cobbler.
Gary Sanchez, C/1B: $2,100 – Nothing to analyze here except this is cheap homerun potential and a pivot at the position.
Gleyber Torres, 2B: $3,300 – I think everyone will be on the Yankees today, but there’s a good reason for it. Skubal is rocking a 6.31 FIP and the Yankees can pour it on at any given moment.
Whit Merrifield, 2B: $3,000 – A Royale with Yankees stack? Looks like I’m leaning that way. Whit’s got a surprising amount of pop in that bat.
Rafael Devers, 3B: $3,500 – I think Davers might be a guy that gets passed over as everyone looks at his opponent, Sandy Alcantara and thinks the match-up is too tough. Prey on their weakness and lock and load Devers for a nice pivot off the chalk.
Gio Urshela, 3B: $2,300 – Remember what I said about clean-up hitters in Perez’s blurb? This is way too cheap for Gio.
Adalberto Mondesi, SS: $3,000 – Get the dual threat while he’s still cheap, I’m really loving this Royals stack!
Randy Arozarena, OF: $3,800 – This is totally a Hitter-Tron call. The boys love Randy today against Eflin. I’m not sure what’s driving that, but I’ll trust the bots on what should be a low-owned play.
Christian Yelich, OF: $3,800 – If you find yourself moving off of Scherzer, Yelich is a nice BvP play. He’s homered three times off Scherzer and owns a .345 average in 31 PAs.
Giancarlo Stanton, OF: $3,000 – Stanton seems to be making his way into every DFS article of late. This price is just too cheap for potential GPP winning power.
Jorge Soler, OF: $2,000 – The final piece of our Royals stack is a min-priced Soler, I think we can pull off this stack even with the max-priced Max.
I’m Only Happy When It Rains
Ugh, so much rain lately. I fear the game in Boston will get washed, which eliminates our one cheap pivot pitcher. My crusade to put all baseball stadiums under retractable roofs continues. There’s some rain in Washington too, hopefully not enough to mess with Scherzer’s start. If it looks that way closer to lock, I might fade him and hope he only gets 4-5 innings. There could be a passing shower in the Twins game as well, but we’re only concerned with bats there, so we should be fine.
Doing Lines In Vegas
Lucas Giolito and the White Sox are the biggest favorites on the day. Gioltio would also be a fine pivot if the Sawx get rained out and you need an alternate, though he’s not much cheaper than Scherzer, only $2,000. The highest over/under is in our Royals vs Twins games, boding well for that Royals stack I touted. The lowest over/under is Mad Max in Washington.
