Talking to my Shohei Ohtani bobblehehead, “You’re going to be okay. You just need to rest a few days.” [Moving his head and miming talking] “I’m sorry, what?” [picking up my Shohei Ohtani translator bobblehead] “Unfortunately, I tried to play through a shoulder, knees and elbow, knees and elbows, knees and elbows pain. I’m sorry that I failed you.” No, you didn’t fail me. You failed the entire world!!! Sorry, no, that’s not true. Pete Crow-Armstrong wasn’t failed, because he will win the MVP unanimously now. Just thought of a funny bit: Going to a sports book, and talking to the person at the betting window with my Ohtani bobblehead. Wonder if I’d get thrown out. Any hoo! Dodgers called up Itch’s top Dodgers prospect Josue De Paula. He said about him previously, “Listed at 6’3” 185 pounds, De Paula appears to be bigger than that to the naked eye–not that I’m walking around with inappropriate eyewear looking at teenage athletes. A left-handed hitter with impressive contact skills for a guy his size, De Paula has yet to really lift the ball in regular season play, topping out at 12 home runs in 98 High-A games in 2025, slashing .263/.406/.421 with 86 strikeouts, 81 walks, and 32 steals in 40 attempts. He was 2.2 years younger than the average age in the Midwest League, so we have a lot of reasons to believe the power will come sooner than later. He closed out the season with a week in Double-A, where he will likely open 2026 as one of the youngest players at that level, and I’d like to open a wound on Grey’s head.” What the heck? That’s from the previous preseason, and De Paula did not let up: 105/26/101/.302/31 in Double-A as a 21-year-old. Seems kinda unfair that someone this good could be in the Dodgers’ system. I could see picking him up in any league for an upside flyer, but the reality of the situation is with two-plus weeks left: Do you want a rookie upside flyer or a vet who is actually hitting well like Richie Palacios? There’s a reason why Dick Palace will be in this afternoon’s Buy column. By the way, Rudy, who does the titles, told me to include this:
Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:
Victor Mesa Jr. – 1-for-1 and his 12th homer. Don’t usually mention pinch-hit homers, which this was, but there were five games all day, and Vic Table Jr. also homered the day before, so could be a little hot schmotato alert.
Nick Martinez – 6 1/3 IP, 0 ER, 2 hits, zero walks, 3 Ks, ERA at 2.92. You in the preseason, “I’ve studied your starter rankings for 56 days straight. I could recite your entire blurb for Spencer Arrighetti by heart and he’s your 146 starter ranked. The first 145 are committed to memory too. I will absolutely kill this draft, and by kill I mean the good killing.” You now, “So, I had Hunter Brown and lost my H2H playoff to someone who farted the alphabet through our draft and picked up Nick Martinez. I want to die. The bad dying.”
Martin Perez – 7 IP, 0 ER, 6 baserunners, 4 Ks, ERA at 3.08. “So, I followed your draft advice, grabbing six starters, spaced perfectly in my snake draft. I cannot lose this league…” “…I just lost to someone who autodrafted Martin Perez in the 2nd round.”
Max Fried – 3 1/3 IP, 1 ER, 1 hit, 2 walks, 7 Ks, ERA at 2.73. He recorded ten outs, allowed one hit, walked two (just recounting shizz now) and threw 80 pitches (new info). If this were ten years ago, I’d guess he was injured or nursing something, but now, honestly, I have no idea if 80 pitches is a full start; he didn’t have it or a mystery Dum-Dum lollipop behind door number three.
Anthony Volpe – 3-for-4, 5 RBIs and a slam (2) and legs (8). How crazy is it that on Wednesday Lombard hit the Yanks’ first grand slam of the season? Nuts, right? Well, now they have two with Volpe hitting one on Thursday. Baseball, man.
Luis Garcia Jr. – 1-for-5, 2 RBIs and his 30th homer, 2nd homer in two games. On the same mic Lou Gehrig gave his famous “Luckiest man on the face of the earth” speech, me chanting to the crowd, “LuGaJu! LuGaJu! LuGaJu!”
Kyle Karros – 1-for-4 and his 11th homer. He won’t be in the Buy column this afternoon, but him and the Rockies are going home for ten games starting Monday. Sounds extremely promising.
Jacob deGrom – 6 IP, 0 ER, 1 hit, zero walks, 12 Ks, ERA at 3.80. Getaway days are the best days for starters and no empirical evidence will change my mind. Give me empirical evidence and I’ll say, “Ooh, someone is an Imperial Officer for the Dark Side and you’re Darth Nerd. What’s up, Darth Nerd?” Any hoo! It’s cool to get Old School deGrom and not just Old deGrom for one game, at least.
Joc Pederson – 1-for-3, 2 RBIs and his 26th homer, hitting .234. Rangers are in such a bad stadium, they might have two guys (Joc/Burger) reach 30 homers and not even be over 50% rostered for most of the year. Their hitting sucks, I think because of their stadium, but — wait it gets worse! — their pitching ranks 21st overall for ERA with a 4.31 ERA. This is the same beguiling oh-crap-that-sucks the Mariners are pulling off.
Julio Rodriguez – 1-for-3, 3 RBIs and his 21st homer, hitting .239. True story alert! I went to the bathroom with deGrom throwing a one-hitter and did a pee-pee (checked mirror to admire hair, but nothing that long, didn’t even wash hands! Oh stop, like you do at home) and returned to the Mariners beating the Rangers. Welp, nice to see JRod get going early. As I always say, he’s mostly a 2nd half of September hitter.
Logan Gilbert – 7 IP, 3 ER, 5 baserunners, 11 Ks, ERA at 3.72. Exhibit 34,000,127 that Wins Are Stupid. Gilbert was out-matched in every way by deGrom and Logan got the Win. If you’re in a league with Wins as a category, think on that. One whole category is totally arbitrary. That’s why I have an ulcer!
Erick Fedde – 5 1/3 IP, 2 ER, 5 baserunners, 1 K, ERA at 3.97. Streamonator has Fedde at the Guards next, and I don’t like it, and the robot doesn’t like it. Prepare for a Fedde whopped.
Braxton Ashcraft – Hit the IL with a made-up injury. Nice to see the Pirates using a little Dodgers’ fake-injury magic.
Oneil Cruz – 3-for-4, 2 RBIs and his 18th homer, hitting .276. His home run went 700 feet, give or take. Can we talk about how he’s a .280 hitter now and next year I’m gonna draft him and he’s gonna hit .180? How cool is that?
Jared Jones – 7 IP, 0 ER, 3 baserunners, 8 Ks, ERA at 4.10. Not sure if it’s true, but it feels like right now the White Sox (Jones’s opponent) has a 40 K% collectively. Not to take anything away from Jones (while doing just that), but the Shite Sox are stumbling to the finish line.
Cam Smith – 2-for-3 and his 20th homer, and 3rd homer in three straight games. Okay, so I said something like him going to Driveline this offseason would get me interested in 2027, but also if he homers in 15 straight games to end the year, that would also get me interested. Smith isn’t in this afternoon’s Buy, because I think he’s rostered in more than 50% of leagues, but if he’s available, he’s clearly hot.
Cristian Javier – 6 IP, 1 ER, 4 baserunners, 5 Ks, ERA at 5.50. Streamonator actually likes his next one (a little), but I don’t trust Javier at all. If you want to try him, you are on your own. But I will be here for you after, in a strictly consoling capacity.
Zack Wheeler – 7 IP, 1 ER, 7 baserunners, 9 Ks, ERA at 3.14. This was the 2nd time Wheeler threw 110 pitches or more this season, joining Dylan Cease (five) as the only pitchers to do so more than once this year. Starters in the year 2070: “Wow, he threw two pitches? That’s crazy. Does he still have an arm? No? Aw shucks. That sucks. That’s what happens when a guy tries to throw more than one 130 MPH pitch.”

In a tight race for a championship. I’m chasing K, W and also one save from gaining a point.
Thinking of dropping Fuentes who I picked up for vulture W and K. I have 3 true closers and Fuentes. Senga is available. Been leery of grabbing him, but he seems to be safer as a closer. Would you drop Fuentes for Senga?
I’d risk it for Senga
Do I drop Cags, Lile, or Austin Riley? Getting spanked and need to stream an SP heading into FINALS weekend!
Riley
Volpe or Lombard ROS?
Lombard
Who’s the drop between Vinny P and Bell?
Bell
Shana Tovah Grey! May it be sweet and prosperous.
You too, sir!
Roupp @STL (Just faced them in his last start at home)
or
Warren @MIN
Warren
Mayo or Lee
Lee, unless dressing a sandwich
If your mayo’s too orly, try adding a little mustard or vinegar
– Hints from Heloise

Need to supplement a slumping Anthony for the weekend. Who do you like out of this bunch for AVG, runs, and singles?
Mesa Jr / Marsee / Cam Smith / Joshua Baez
Also, someone dropped Michael Harris. Worth my waiver to run out during next week’s championship round or is this a prolonged slump?
*Sorry if this is a duplicate. Don’t see my original comment
Need to pick up an OF for the weekend with Anthony struggling. Needing AVG, R, and singles. Who do you like best out of these options?
Victor Mesa / Cam Smith / Jacob Marsee / Joshua Baez
Also, someone dropped Michael Harris. Should I burn my waiver to pick him up for my title matchup next week or are we looking at a prolonged slump?
Smith
Yes
Thanks! Sorry for the duplicate comment
No problem
Good morning. Redraft, 12 team, standard 5×5 roto.
Please rank top 4 ROS of: F. Freeman, K. Marte, R. Anthony, O’Hearn, Sanoja, Mayo, C. Jensen, DeLauter, Eldridge, H. Hernandez
Thank you.
Mayo, Heriberto, Marte, and is Freeman healthy? I don’t know. Maybe O’Hearn
Thanks. Looks like O’Hearn has tough stretch coming off IL (3 of 4 vs. lefties, then the Mis & Henderson). Guess will see if update on Freeman today before deciding which to drop for Heriberto (Mayo gone; I already have Marte).
Cool
So Seattle is at bing bong this weekend and the A’s are running three lefties out there this weekend according to Hittertron. So would you rather run Taylor Ward (the short side of the platoon) out there or Canzone as a weekend streamer?
Ugh, I guess Ward
Texas is 2.5 games behind Houston. Jake was at 90 pitches and leaves the game. Seattle needed 10 pithes to score 4 runs, take a 4-3 lead and get Gilbert the win. That win killed me in my H2H but forgetting that, what is Jake doing? He’s 37 years old. His team is right in hunt, how on earth is he not telling his manager to let him at least start the 7th? Jacob deGrom had some of the most dominant seasons I’ve ever seen. He’s still got it in the bag, last couple of starts he’s been dominant again, but he really does remind me of Maddox, who used to take himself out after 90 pitches no matter what the score was.
DeGrom has had a lot of injuries, so maybe trying to keep him on the field
Is Framber capable of shutting down the Rockies? I can’t believe this is even a question. So, playoffs on the line, yay or nay?
Ray @SF
Nola @ ATL
Are any of these three wroth a gamble?
Not for me
I’d guess so
Framber has not allowed a run since i spite cut him in nfbc (one start).
Haha, perfect
Week one of two final. Need K’s > K/9 > QS. Rank these starters
Anthony Molina (SF): vs SDP, @STL
Scherzer: @TOR vs DET
Bassit: @TOR, @NYM
Andrew Alvarez: vs LAA, @STL
Dobnak: @BOS, @PIT
Scherzer, Alvarez, Molina
Hey Grey!
Ashcraft: Are you kidding me! I swear my league is Effing with me.
I thought for weeks that Francona was messing with me by not shutting Burns down instead of making him ½ @ss it. (Also, my league has him undroppable to add insult).
THEN I thought Chad Tracy was a secret owner in my league by sending Gasper down, and then back up the next afternoon after I dropped him.
NOW THIS!?
Ashcraft was one of my starters today, and you wait until NOW to do this? ESPN says “Pirates placed Ashcraft on the 15-day injured list Thursday with right arm discomfort.” Yeah, well this gives me stomach discomfort.
NOW I am CONVINCED this goes right to the top! Bob Manfred is secret owner in my league! <Puts on tin foil hat>
(sidenote: I am in CST and read your stuff 1st thing in the am. Roughly 7:00am. I want you to know that whilst you are slumbering in your cozy palace at 5am, I am pulling my hair out, having ulcers. Lol.
10tm H2H, redraft, last 3 days for 1st place. Need to hit the gas but not blow-up ratios
1) Would you still start Scherzer vs BAL and Liberatore vs CHW today?
2) This weekend, I have Holmes vs PIT, Seymour vs HOU, Tolle vs KC, and Burns @ Mil. These are all starts (except maybe Burns) right?
3) Also thinking picking up Peralta vs HOU or Jobe vs COL. Which one is best?
4) I am down in Saves this week and can afford 1 more RP for this weekend. Who you like best?
a.Garret Whitlock vs KC
b.Tyler Wells vs HOU
c.Rico Garcia @TOR
d.Dreyer @MIA
e.Kittridge @TOR
f. Ginkel vs TEX
Sorry for the long post, but this is all I have for the rest of the season! Lol
Haha, sorry? Haha…1. Yes 2. Yes 3. Freddy 4. Tough call, I guess Ginkel
Thanks Grey!
Have a great weekend, hope to finish strong!
Thanks, you too!
When a guy is on a hot streak, and he’s got an off day on Thursday, does that make you less likely to pick him up on Friday?
Bathroom Ponderings
Ha, I have considered that too…Not sure it matters, but it might
Grey
11 team keeper roto
Wetherholt is due to come off the IL this weekend
Who do i drop
Max Clark or
Hector Rodriguez
Clark
Preach!

HAHA, yes
Hey Grey. So disappointed in Julio and Carroll this year who have been the foundation of my keepers the last couple years. You see yourself down on either of these guys next year?
How are you feeling about Scherzer today vs Baltimore? I have Sale going and wondering if should send out Max. In my championship final few days in head to head and up in era and whip, up by two in wins and tied for losses. But wondering if I should
Play conservatively. My opponent has 6 starters left for rest of week with a bunch of good starters. As for me, outside of Sale and Sherzer today, Saturday I have Seymour vs Houston, and Sunday I have Cameron @Boston and Quantril @Arizona but hoping I don’t need to play those guys. Just wondering if should run out Scherzer today. Thanks as always
I can’t imagine these guys aren’t solid bounce backs next year
Scherzer seems to be in a groove and worth starting…Now, if you don’t need it, by all means, don’t do it
Gotcha. How you feel about those remaining starts I have left in order of preference if forced to start them : Seymour vs Houston, Cameron @Boston and Quantril @Arizona
I don’t mind them…That order, maybe Quantrill 2nd
Your hair called and said, “please wash your hands before you caress me again”.
HAHA
Montgomery in Pittsburgh over Tanner Scott in a saves and holds league moving forward? Thanks.
Yes
thank you
No problem
Hey Grey! So, when I’m at a game, I clap (loudly) with two strikes starting from the first inning. Last night it felt like I was clapping and clapping and clapping for most of the game. I’m sure the family sitting in front of me loved me LOL. Fried was getting to two strikes, and then striking Rockies batters out, but wasn’t so efficient… was surprised when Boone took him out, then even more surprised to realize he was at 80 pitches already. My guess, or hope as Yankees fan, is no injury and just one of those days where he had good stuff but not great command. For what its Wuertz.
Yeah, that’s what I figured
Jones earned the Pirates 5th entry on the 100 Best Fantasy Starts list:
08 Paul Skenes May 12 vs COL
28 Paul Skenes May 6 @ARI
34 Braxton Ashcraft Aug 13 @MIA
40 Paul Skenes Apr 24 @MIL
65 Jared Jones Sep 10 vs CWS
deGrom would have been around #20 if he had “earned” the win. As it was, he had the 2nd best winless start:
182 May 24 Reid Detmers (LAA) vs TEX 8 IP/1 ER/ 1 BR/14 K
340 Sep 10 Jacob deGrom (TEX) @SEA 6 IP/0 ER/ 1 BR/12 K
360 Jul 23 Gavin Williams (CLE) vs MIN 7 IP/0 ER/ 2 BR/11 K
449 Jun 28 Sonny Gray (BOS) vs NYY 7.33 IP/0 ER/ 2 BR/9 K
453 Jun 22 Brandon Woodruff (MIL) @CIN 6 IP/0 ER/1 BR/10 K
470 Jul 08 Jared Jones (PIT) vs ATL 6 IP/0 ER/ 0 BR/8 K
522 May 10 Logan Gilbert (SEA) @CHW 6 IP/0 ER/ 1 BR/9 K
522 Apr 10 Shota Imanaga (CHC) vs PIT 6 IP/0 ER/ 1 BR/9 K
529 Aug 06 Dylan Cease (TOR) @CHC 7 IP/0 ER/ 3 BR/10 K
543 Sep 02 Cam Schlittler (NYY) @LAA 8 IP/1 ER/ 2 BR/9 K
561 Apr 01 Kevin Gausman (TOR) vs COL 6 IP/0 ER/ 2 BR/10 K
567 Mar 27 Kevin Gausman (TOR) vs ATH 6 IP/1 ER/ 1 BR/11 K
576 Jun 10 Reid Detmers (LAA) vs HOU 7 IP/1 ER/ 1 BR/9 K
577 Jul 30 Noah Cameron (KCR) @MIN 8 IP/0 ER/ 3 BR/7 K
616 Jun 05 Roki Sasaki (LAD) vs LAA 7 IP/0 ER/ 4 BR/10 K
616 May 13 Jacob Misiorowski (MIL) vs SDP 7 IP/0 ER/ 4 BR/10 K
635 Aug 09 Cam Schlittler (NYY) vs ATL 7 IP/1 ER/ 3 BR/11 K
643 Jun 02 Noah Cameron (KCR) @CIN 7 IP/1 ER/ 1 BR/8 K
653 Aug 29 Cristopher Sánchez (PHI) @LAA 7 IP/0 ER/ 3 BR/8 K
665 May 27 Dustin May (STL) @MIL 7 IP/1 ER/ 2 BR/9 K
There’s a 7-way tie at #94 for the line to beat:
7IP/W/0 ER/5 BR/10 K
Cmon Scherzer tonight!
Great stuff, Vin! Surprised deGrom would’ve been *only* around 20th
Well, Harrison has #27 with 6 IP/2 BR/12 K, so 6 IP/1 BR/12 K is a bit better. Currently, Rasmussen is at #20 with 7 IP/1 BR/9 K. An extra inning over deGrom makes WHIP & ERA a little more valuable, but 3 fewer strikeouts. Be right around there.
That makes sense
