Searching for value in starting pitchers can be a fool’s errand sometimes, but going counter to the Verlanders and Darvishes are the only ways to win in DFS, especially when many teams are prepping for the playoffs and resting starters. One big time team that needs to stretch starters out is the LA Dodgers. Rich Hill isn’t exactly the paragon of health, and that means the Dodgers are looking to stretch out Ross Stripling. He’s been coming back from the IL this month, and doing so to the tune of a tidy 1.13 ERA. It doesn’t take too much imagination to see him getting through six when he’s pitching in the cavernous confines of Dodger Stadium. Tampa Bay is one hot hitter (more on him later) or two and timely hitting it’s way to an AL Wild Card spot, by no means a Juggernaut offensively. Stripling’s low $5,500 price tag means you can load up on offense without the risk of Verlander being pulled quickly or Darvish blowing up and making Cubs fans worry even more. Now let’s spend all that extra salary.

Jose Abreu, 1B: $4,000 – Abreu is powering up, with five home runs in September. He’s facing lefthander Martin Perez of the Twins, who’s got a 6.20 ERA the past thirty days that’s only that high due to a good start against the struggling Red Sox. Abreu hits .360 with a 1.032 OPS against lefties this year.
Rougned Odor, 2b: $3,000 – A streaky hitter that can win your game when he’s hot, currently slashing .306/1.146 in September. Yes, he’s facing Verlander, but does have two home runs against him in the past. Odor also loves batting at Minute Maid Park: .329/1.038 with six home runs over the past three years.
Eugenio Suarez, 3B: $3,900 – This guy is actually a bargain. In September he is slashing .370/1.430 with eight home runs. He’s facing right hander Yu Darvish, who’s pitching well lately but also not entirely dependable. Suarez has 37 home runs against righties this year. It’s amazing I haven’t used any ! in this write up. Woops, just did.
Marcus Semien, SS: $4,100 – He’s on fire, thus the price tag: .377/1.219 in September including six home runs, with three steals to boot. He’s got 25 homers against righties this year, and today faces right hander Jorge Lopez of the Royals.
Austin Meadows, OF: $4,400 – Another September scorcher, he’s hitting .423/1.415 this month including a Suarez level seven homers. He’s hitting .299/.962 against right handers like Ross Stripling.
George Springer, OF: $4,200 – And we’re spending. Springer has six homers in September, including, as you might have heard, four in his last seven games. He’s slashing .303/1.002 vs righties like his opponent today Lance Lynn of the Rangers.
Rockies Lefties: Marcus Stroman of the Mets heads to his Coors Field start allowing left handed batters to slash .301/.809 against him. Ryan McMahon is overpriced for someone hitting .200 in September. But Charlie Blackmon (OF, $4,200) is hitting .388/1.193 at home this year. Daniel Murphy (1B, $3,100) has several check marks: 10/13 home runs vs right hand pitchers, .321/.837 at home, .310/.856 at home. Tony Wolters (C, $2,600) is the one value in the bunch. In his favor is a .308/.933 slash line over the past seven days.
