There’s a common refrain heard all across New York these days. Come on, you know it well….All Rise. Now that’s reserved for a certain gargantuan pinstriped outfielder, but today Yankees fans will be jumping up to cheer Luis Severino. Sevy, as he is lovingly known, has spent the year carving up the league, including the powerful Astros. Today he gets the Mets, who in the best of times hit him to a Mendoza-like .162 average and .581 OPS. It is the worst of times for the Mets, so expecting any resistance to a Severino fastball is just plain foolish. It may be tempting to take Max Scherzer with an early pick, but it is expected to rain and rain some more in Washington today. Kluber is also on the docket, but the Tigers hit a sneaky .791 OPS against him. Instead, grab Luis Severino and get a jump on the competition. Ross Stripling, SP: Middle – So far this season, Stripling is blitzing the league to a 4-1 record with a 1.57 ERA and 1.11 WHIP. In his last 5 starts, he’s been even stingier: 1.21 ERA and .87 WHIP. Those are vintage Pedro numbers. Atlanta has some good bats, but they haven’t seen much of Stripling. He’s a great value pick even in the third round this week.
Clayton Richard, SP: Late – Richard gets to toe the rubber against the hapless Miami Marlins today. Collectively, they hit him to a 2008 Wall Street Crash low of a .568 OPS. That’s a great bet late in a larger draft.
Nolan Arenado, IF: Early – Nolan is on fire lately, with a .969 OPS over the past month. He has only a few at-bats against today’s opponent, Zack Godley, but he gets to face him in Colorado, where Arenado makes it rain extra-base hits.
Charlie Blackmon, OF: Early – Notice a theme? Yes, when the Rockies’ big bats are at home, they’re a great bet to rake. And against Godley, Blackmon rakes to a 1.214 OPS. Stack these Rockies and ride the silver bullet to an easy win.
Matt Carpenter, IF: Middle – Carpenter is on a great run, batting around .300 with a .900 OPS over the past two weeks. Somehow he has 14 at-bats against lesser light Anthony DeSclafani of the Reds and hits a robust .429 with a 1.627 OPS. Those positive Cardinal fans will have a great reason to…be positive today.
Adam Jones, OF: Middle – His team may be in last place, but Adam Jones of the Orioles is not one to slink into the background. Jones loves to face off against Marco Estrada of the Blue Jays. In 32 at-bats, he’s got an .874 OPS and 2 home runs.
Evan Gattis, IF: Late – We might squeeze one more week out of grabbing Gattis late in a large draft. Right now he cannot be denied, and against Matt Moore of the Rangers, he hits .333 with a 1.178 OPS.
Jorge Soler, OF: Late – Check he’s in the lineup, as he’s day-to-day with a bruised toe, but this under-the-radar slugger has hit 9 home runs this year and loves to face today’s opponent, Sean Manaea of the A’s. In 3 at-bats, he has a home run. It’s not a ton of history, but these are the type of late picks that help you win your league.
I’m Only Happy When It Rains
Well, sports fans, it’s a wet one out there in certain parts of the country. Rain is forecast for the Cardinals and Reds in St. Louis, in Philadelphia for the Brewers and Phillies, at Wrigley for the Pirates and Cubs, and in Washington for the Nationals and Giants. The wind isn’t doing much other than blowing in at a good clip in Arlington for the Rangers and Astros.

Stack ’em, pack ’em and rack ’em: The highest projected runs scored today are Rockies (6.07) at home versus the Diamondbacks; of course, the Diamondbacks (5.45) at the Rockies; and the Nationals (5.44) at home versus the Giants.
The best and the brightest: The biggest favorites today are Washington (-289) against the Giants, Cleveland (-251) against Detroit, and Houston (-225) against the Rangers.
