Rookie pitchers give you a roofie.  Rookie hitters give you agita.  So why do we keep going back for more like a guest on Montel?  It’s sorta like the old joke that Woody Allen quotes in Annie Hall.  We need the eggs.  Besides said eggs, if a rookie somehow/someway breaks out, he’ll help you win your championship.  If you draft properly in the first 7 to 10 rounds, your team will be competitive, but so should other teams.  It’s what you do after those rounds that makes the difference.  You’re not winning your league with Longoria in the first round, but you could with Mike Minor in the 20th.  As wonky as that sounds, it’s true.  If you click on the player’s name, you’ll find whole posts and projections for each guy.  It’s like Santa woke up drunk in March.  Anyway, here’s some rookies to target for 2011 fantasy baseball:

Mike Minor – In my pitchers’ pairings post, I told you to grab Mike Minor or Jordan Zimmermann on every team.  Then I see teams in the comments that don’t have either with a variation of this comment, “Grey (insert compliment), what do you think of my team?”  I don’t think you have Mike Minor or Jordan Zimmermann, that’s what I think.

Jesus Montero – I wrote the post you find under Montero’s linky-ma-jig prior to the Russell Nathan Jeanson Coltrane Martin, Jr. fiasco.  Montero should be owned in all keeper leagues and I don’t mind taking a flyer on him late in two catcher leagues, but, as of right now, he’s not going to get enough looks for one catcher leagues.  If J. Martin gets hurt (very possible with a side of “It’s going to happen at some point”), Montero will be a hot add across all leagues.

Jeremy Hellickson – For ratios, I give Hellickson the best rookie starter numbers.  Better than even our friend, Mike Minor (well, he’s my friend).  The Rays are pretty conservative and I don’t see them abusing Hellickson’s arm so he will probably be skipped most of September if he starts in the rotation out of the gate.

Michael Pineda – Just went over him yesterday, but you knew that because you follow along every day, right?  Mmm-hmm.

Domonic Brown – Tough (hamate bone) break for Brown for this year.  To look at the glass as half full, the shine is going to be off of Brown for 2012.  Hopefully those damn Mayans are wrong.

Chris Carter – Back in January, Chris Carter said this, “I’m still thinking it’s my job to lose, basically.  It’s a business.  They want to win and make the team better.”  That isn’t as great a quote as, “Who are you, Karim Garcia?  I do not know you,” but it’s still pretty solid.  It’s like you go into a job interview and say, “If you want the burgers to get flipped right, I’ll get hired.  What, you want crap burgers?”  Unfortunately, Carter’s in Make Believe Land hanging with the Easter Bunny.  It’s not his job to lose.

Aroldis Chapman – Let’s quote what I said back in November of last year, “Fidel Castro used to karaoke Sublime by singing, “I don’t practice Santeria, I can’t see Aroldis’ fastball.”  It’s fast.  We’ll leave it at that.  There’s really no question.  Let’s give some numbers now.  In 26 IP of his rookie year, 25 Ks, 1.15 WHIP and a 2.42 ERA.  Then in his sophomore year, his numbers were 160 2/3 IP, 130 Ks, 1.51 WHIP and a 4.82 ERA.  His wildness really stopped him from being successful with 96 walks.  There were definitely some flashes of brilliance, but almost completely unownable in fantasy.  Wait, next year hasn’t happened yet. Oh, right, random italicized voice.  My bad.  Those are the rookie and sophomore numbers for Randy Johnson.  These two aren’t the same player, but A) Randy is the player Chapman is most compared to B) Aroldis is a wild, nasty lefty C) There’s no C.”  And that’s me quoting me!  I do think Aroldis in the bullpen has a better chance of success.  When he finally moves into the rotation, I’m going to preach caution.

Freddie Freeman – I’ve been pretty down on Freeman, in the non-sexual way, since I wrote his post back in November.  He’s just a’ight in NL-Only leagues.  For clarification purposes, “just a’ight” is less than “a’ight” and way below “a’ight a’ight.”

Danny Espinosa – Anyone that has read this site for any extended period of time knows I love to punt middle infield and go for upside.  Espinosa has already found his way on multiple teams and I’m not done drafting all my teams yet.

Mike Moustakas – Recently, I was doing research for a screenplay and I had to read some parenting books.  There’s this thing parents do called a stall tactic.  For instance, “Mommy, can we go to the park tomorrow?”  Then Mommy says, “We’ll see.”  They’re stalling on a decision.  This is bad.  So what does this mean for baseball?  Dayton Moore is a bad parent.  Let Moustakas go to the park!

Desmond Jennings – Aroundin’ third, and headed for home, it’s a brown-eyed handsome man and it’s Johnny Damon.  In keepers, I’d still pursue Jennings, but, without injuries, we might not see Jennings in any real capacity until next year.

Dustin Ackley – It’s looking like the Mariners may give Ackley a shot to play 2nd base right out of the gate.  An upside MI flyer?  Yes, please and thank you.  Then I look at Ackley’s minor league numbers and think, “Um, whatever.”  Everyone thinks Ackley is going to grow into a force.  Key words here are “going to grow.”  In 2011, you’re going to get numbers that are fairly similar to Crapolanco.  BTW, there’s an announcement coming on Monday.  Batten down your hatches!  Or is it button?

  1. royce! says:

    My wife must be reading the same parenting book, except we don’t have kids.

    Re: Minor-It would be hilarious if you responded to every “how’s my team?” question that way.

  2. Steve says:

    Didn’t realise “we’ll see” is an officially recognised parenting strategy. I’m just trying to get them to leave me alone.

  5. thegeniusking says:

    Ah, John Fogerty’s “Centerfield”, a bitter album that a bitter, bitter man spent ten years recording in his garage. Luckily, old timey baseball nostalgia was at a fever pitch in the mid-80’s, so the old man got a hit out of it. Though personally I prefer the song that started the whole “John Fogerty gets sued for sounding like John Fogerty” debacle “Zanz Cant Danz” wherein Fogerty gives a cautionary tale about a “little pig”, former record label head Saul Zaentz, saying in the chorus “Zanz can’t dance but he’ll steal your money, watch him he’ll rob you blind.”

  6. Chas says:

    You’re a screenwriter? Any credits? I work in the industry myself, and am just curious.

  7. AL KOHOLIC says:

    @Kendrys Cart Off Home Run: votto,hanley and cargo for sure,prob. heyward and felix,tough choices,i like kershaw too

  8. Mark says:

    I have Minor or Zimmermann or both on four out of six teams so far. One I drafted Minor but dropped him because I’m deep with high end SP and needed a better RP flier and had no one else to sacrifice (went with McGee, will likely pick Minor back up if he doesn’t get grabbed when I have room). Another I passed because they both went ahead of Jhoulys Chacin and James Shields, and I felt no need to reach for Minor or Zimm with those two still on the board too, feeling I needed just one more SP and I could live with any of the four. I wound up with Chacin around pick #260, mind bogglingly enough, and Shields didn’t even get drafted. That’s a Yahoo Winner’s league, which just goes to show how easy it is to win a Yahoo public league with minimal effort.

  9. nyydj2 says:

    Grey, just mocked this one and came back to see this new entry you put up. I think I went into shock to see Felix still there at #32, was not planning on a pitcher that early, kind of screwed me up the rest of the way. Average is totally tanked and I did not get into the draft in time for the first pick and autoed Braun. What do ya think anyways?

    Is there something I’m missing with Kendrick at 13 as he is still a FA(never drafted) in 24 round keeper league

    Grey : How many teams do you manage in a given year BTW?

    @Kendrys Cart Off Home Run

    Keep a close eye on McGee as I and many others have Farnsworth pegged for primary closer duties.

  13. Steve says:

    Happy trails to Scot Shields, king of the Hold in his day.

  14. Jake says:

    Based on saves/job security/health (my ratios and Ks will be fine), who do you prefer…Francisco Rodriguez, JJ Putz, or Matt Thorton? I’m looking to add one of them as part of a package deal, but they all concern me a bit.

  15. chata says:

    so , i adopted the 12th place orphaned team in a keeper league .
    last year’s winner scored 89 points …. my team finished with 20 points .
    (11th place had 41 points) …. just to give you some perspective .

    to make matters worse , every team keeps 9 players !
    my best keepers turned out to be : wright , uggla , s.drew , scherzer , soto ,
    d.lee , dlr , ian stewart , and jair .
    obviously , in not competing for 1st place , this year .

    with the 1st pick in this year’s draft (#109 , over-all) ,
    available are : feliz , gallardo , bruce , butler , and freeman .
    my plan is to go with freeman (my 6th keeper , replacing d.lee)

    if i take bruce , i’m afraid that some smart-azz will grab freeman
    and that i will not have a 1st baseman , going forward .

    with picks # 132/133 , i’m targeting hellickson and trout ,
    as draft picks and keepers (# 7 & 8) .
    still , i’m going to need another keeper (or two , depending if hellickson
    makes it back to me .)
    julio teheran ??

    dom brown , getting hurt , helps me , i think .

    so , yes , screw the mayans .
    or as voltaire said … “There are truths which are not for all times , nor
    for all men .”

    it hard to make a mistake , at this point , but , what are your thoughts
    on freeman , in this instance , at #109th ?
    is this the guy that i want to secure ??

    thanking you , in advance .

    (and playing for 2013/14)

  16. Grey

    Grey says:

    @AL KOHOLIC: Thanks! Crawford, Uggla, Bruce, Cruz, Pedroia and Latos…

    @Kendrys Cart Off Home Run: Agree with AL.

    @thegeniusking: Ha, yeah him getting sued for sounding like himself is genius.

    @Chas: Yup

    @Mark: Yeah, not much of a challenge there.

    @nyydj2: Yeah, this team is a bit of a mess. F-Her can stabilize your pitching so you didn’t need Liriano which could’ve helped your hitting.

    @exno: Agreed

    @Mr2Bits: Think we have 7 or 8 this year.

    @Steve: He was a great cuddle boy in his day.

    @Jake: K-Rod

    @chata: I’d go with Bruce… Brown over Teheran.

  17. joe from point pleasant says:

    @Grey: Regarding Marcum’s fastball…

    Yea I know he is a soft-tosser, 87.1 mph average last year, but its a big difference when you are only “touching 86” rather than averaging 87. In order to average 87 you have to figure there are some 89 mph pitches mixed in there with some slower ones.

    Anyway, his fastball isn’t what will make or break him anyway its that slider. I liked Marcum before this news, not quite as high on him as you were, but now I think I would stay away from him in drafts for at least the time being.

    Changing the subject more toward this post… do you think Ackley could wind up with .310 80 run 12 hr 10 sb 60 rbi numbers this year or is that way out of the question?

  18. Chris says:

    Are you doing any Tout Wars this year? Can’t wait to hear it tomorrow on Sirius.

  19. JoeC says:

    @thegeniusking: But don’t you agree that his bitterness was well-justified?

    And “Centerfield” is such an upbeat song. Doesn’t sound like he let his bitterness seep into that particular ditty.

  20. JoeC says:

    @joe from point pleasant: Boy, that seems a bit optimistic on Ackley, considering his underwhelming minor league numbers.

    I’m gonna go with the “under” on all those cat predictions (and in some cases, massively under).

  21. rar says:

    Why the optimism that Ackley will start the year in the bigs? Nothing I’ve read suggests that.

  22. El Burro says:

    Greetings, oh wise Grey. Its a lovely day in LA as my Bruins narrowly escaped the evil Izzo empire last night, but Ill take it.

    Your daily blog along with the FanGraphs site continue to be my must reads and yours particular, always seems to give me a chuckle – so keep up the great work as your sarcasm/wit is much appreciated.

    I read the “reach for what you want” post and couldnt agree more as I reached on a few guys I wanted cause it was a 16 teamer, so wanted to get your take on my draft earlier this week.

    16 teams, 5×5, mixed, H2H league; drafting from the 11 hole. Ive won this league 3 of the last 4 years, but not sure about my 2011 squad – think Im a bit light on bats and solid on arms. FYI — I usually punt C, SS and Closers.

    sure , i’d like to have bruce on my team ,
    but , i’m not sure i want to risk having d. lee as my 1st baseman for 2012 and beyond .
    of course , there are always future trade considerations .

    off topic …. do you down-grade ryan howard’s projections , now that it appears that utley won’t provide his usual protection in the batting order ?

  24. Jake says:

    follow up question…who wins this deal?

    Zimmerman and Morrow for Lincecum and K-Rod? I only have 1 closer in a 13 team league, and have Beltre as a discounted backup to Zimm (fell to the late 5th rd).

    I’ve tried to trade Beltre, but nobody seems to want to even give a Wilson/Soria/Bell type for him straight up….no respect, I tell ya.

  25. Grey

    Grey says:

    @rar: May give him a shot to start. May being the operative word. Sorry if that’s confusing. I read that if his defense is up to snuff he’ll be the starter. I think he had one error as of Sunday. I’d ignore him either way in one year leagues because I don’t think much of his hitting yet.

    @El Burro: Thanks for the kind words! Your team looks really well balanced with speed and power, like the guys you took. Latos scares me and with him your pitching may make or break you.

    @Black Beard: Interesting…

    @chata: Is there official word on Utley? Why can’t you draft a 1B next year to replace Lee? Or acquire one some other way?

  26. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Jake: I’d want Zimmerman.

  27. 9-7 says:

    I have Minor AND Zimmerman on my keeper team. Too much?

  28. AL KOHOLIC says:

    @Grey: latos is really scaring me to this year,even at $7 im still not sure,i thought id take a shot at nolasco as a late pick with k,s and upside,but spring or not,he just got rocked for 8 hits and 7 runs in 2 innings,sprong era,24.75

  29. OaktownSteve

    OaktownSteve says:

    @Joe and Joe: speaking of the massively under on Ackley, 80 runs are ridiculously out of the question. Ichiro scored 74 runs last year. And lest you think that an aberration based on the vile wreck that was 2010 Marniers baseball, he only scored 88 the year before despite getting 225 hits. If Ackley played anywhere else, there might be cause for getting excited. Can’t see him having much but deep league value even if he plays 140 games in 2011.

  30. Wilsonian says:

    From earlier…

    Does your recommendation of Espinosa mean you like him over Sean-Rod?

  31. chata says:

    after 108 keepers , there’s not much left .
    if i had butler instead of d.lee , bruce would be a no-brainer pick ,
    as even by 2013/14 butler will still be a young man .

    watching some minor league games .
    can’t corroborate the comment , but some announcer/analyst
    said he couldn’t see how utley would be able to play defense this year .
    didn’t he just go and see a “new” doctor ?
    haven’t heard of any results from that visit , yet .

  32. AL KOHOLIC says:

    @Wilsonian: id say yes from his post history

  33. El Burro says:

    Gotcha; appreciate the take… As for Latos, Bud Black was pretty careful with him from an innings stand point in ’10, but I hear you on the overall innings ‘jump’ from ’09 to ’10. Im hoping you are wrong about him… Incidentally, took him over your boy, Liriano, who was also there… I too like my SP from the NL (West, when given the option).

  34. Grey

    Grey says:

    @9-7: Nah

    @AL KOHOLIC: Eh on Nolasco. $7 is too cheap to throw back.

    @Wilsonian: Yeah

    @chata: You’re overthinking this 1B scenario. I doubt Freeman is even a top 100 pick next year. He has weak power.

    @El Burro: No problem.

  35. cashmoney says:

    drafting tomorrow, keeper league 12 teams standard scoring except we use offensive K’s…My keepers are Uggla and Kershaw
    I’m drafting 10 and have been pretty set on going 1b-3b, more specifically Prince and Zimm. I am hearing from guys in my league that Braun is probably going to fall to me which screws this plan up royally

    would I be crazy to pass on Braun at 10? I really want a big time 1B and 3B…I could always grab Dunn or Morneau in the 3rd or 4th but I really like Prince this year and doubt he would make the turn

    If you were at 10 and Braun, Prince, Agon, Wright and Arod were there, who would you take?

  36. Bermuda Triangles says:

    Grey: Any love for Mike Trout to play at all this year? Long term keeper league, I have no 1st round picks, and would have to try to carry him as a 5th OF (3 starters). If I have to drop him, at least someone else can’t draft him and hold for years…

    Any thoughts?

  39. JoeC says:

    @chata: Really? You’re getting info on a player from the blog of a rival team? Wouldn’t you *expect* them to say bad things about the player in question?

    I don’t know what that Giant fan is whining about anyways. Who CARES if Latos writes “I hate SF” on a baseball? What’s wrong with having a little passion? Don’t we want these baseball players to hate the opposition more and stop being so damn neutral (since players move around so much with free agency)?

    And all of this is moot as far as fantasy is concerned. Is Mat Latos a quality pitcher and do you think he’ll have a good year? If yes, draft him. If no, sit on your hands when his name comes up.

    I don’t care if he’s not a Mother Teresa clone. All I care about is whether he can help my fantasy team (see, I’ve got my priorities straight!)!

  40. Grey

    Grey says:

    @cashmoney: I’d go with what my top 10 and top 20 say.

    @Bermuda Triangles: Don’t think he comes up until September.

    @Herb Urban: Hey, man, good to hear from you. Your team looks stacked, nice hitting and pitching. Not even really sure how you got that good of hitting with those pitchers.

    @JoeC: I agree with you. If only more players weren’t so neutral.

  41. Penguin says:

    @chata: Sorry, I live in SF territory, and that shizz is funny. Remember that he will now have to pitch in a park full of people that hate him, face a team he’s gone out of his way to piss off, and have to keep this up for years.

    All rivalries are based on childish antics. I grew up in the middle of the UT-Texas A&M rivalry, where A&M hired an architect (who happened to have graduated from UT, unbeknown to his new employers) to build them a new building, he made it, it was wonderful, and then when it rained the first time, it turned burnt orange because of the stone he used (and cost them millions to replace). Just because it’s SF doesn’t mean it’s above participating in childish antics related to an in-division rivalry.

    I don’t think a bit of trash-talking with an in-division rival will necessarily lead to punching teammates.

  42. Major Tilt says:

    Playing in 12 team roto keeper league. Best available players are zimmerman, Kemp and all the 1b’s. I already have Votto. Would it be crazy to draft another 1b? Also Kemp is above Zimmerman in your ranks but 3b is shallow. Should I take Zimmerman?

  43. Ryan

    Ryan F says:

    I didn’t see you mention Brandon Belt. can you forecast him this yr now or June and long term upside if any please sir. I’m in a 16 team h2h 3 keeper league. Loney is my only 1b that is why i ask. thx

  44. JoeC says:

    @Penguin: Exactly!

    I *love* it that the Giants hate the Dodgers and the Padres hate the Giants and the Yankees hate the Red Sox (well, sort of) and nobody hates the Pirates except their fans.

    This is what sports is about! What fun are sports if you can’t take pleasure in beating your opponent? Respect ’em, yeah, follow the rules and all that jive, but by gods, let that fire in your belly burn a little. Winning is so much more fun when the embers of hate are fully stoked.

  45. captain yesterday says:

    Grey, I have the 11th pick in a 14 man league (4th pick in even-numbered rounds) and the owner of the first overall pick has made it known it’s available. What do you think is reasonable value for this pick? Or should I just stand pat?

  46. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Major Tilt: Don’t take another 1B.

    @Ryan F: June… Maybe 10 homers and a few steals this year.

    @captain yesterday: What does going from Fielder or Howard to Pujols mean to you? A 10th round pick maybe, nothing huge.

    I don’t really need Werth – he would replace Adam Lind in my lineup – which is an upgrade and I am not sure I want to give up 200 K’s

    so what to do here – do I just take the better player and figure out my pitching later

  49. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Mr Baseball: That’s tough. I’d take Werth and figure it out later.

  51. Michael Bourne says:

    Strategy Question:

    I am in a 10 team daily H2H with 1 Catcher and 5 bench spots.

    I was thinking about using my last two rounds on Catcher. I could platoon 2 catchers (Ianetta, Salty, Martin) and try to kepp one in every day. Most catchers only get 350ish at bats. This would hopefully get me 550+ and keep me getting stats from catcher on a daily basis. I would get extra maybe 10 HR and 20-30 R/RBI and turn a catcher position into similar to a top tier one catcher without the draft pick.

    Do you think I am better doing this or getting an 8th SP, or even an alternate power hitter for my OF4 or Util2 and get extra power if I am already winning steals later in a week?

  52. JG_ism says:

    Hey GREY! Good evening, just finished my H2H yahoo draft. Next week is CBS auction. Psyched! Check out the first team, and please feel free to comment and criticize as I hold your opinion in high regards…

  53. Joel says:

    Grey, I have strategy question:

    I’m new to FBB. Been doing FF for years,and Doc is my go-to expert. Love this site.

    My league is a head to head, with 6 categories of hitting (HR, Avg, OPS, SB, RBI, and least strike-outs) and 6 pitching (W, ERA, WHIP, SV, Ks, least hrs allowed). whoever wins the most categories for the week wins.

    My questions are: does this format make stud pitchers more valuable? What round should I target for my first pitcher in this format? THANKS!

  54. Wilsonian says:

    @Grey: and one more Espinosa question… like him over Chris Johnson for a bench spot when you have Hill at 2B and Raburn and Kendrick in the UTIL spots?

    Sorry, I know I’ve been on this Espinosa crap all day. I’ve been on the road and have been trying to catch up on my leagues via cellphone only for the past week. So many apologies.

  55. Wilsonian says:

    Also, if I wanted to use Rasmus to target a pitcher, who (or what tier) should I target?

  56. Michael Bourne says:

    @Kazmere: Why so many closers? Planning to trade them or just make sure you only get first in one stat and last in 9?

    @Joel: The strike outs for hitters definitely adds up, but generally I think you hope for that and focus on other stats, using high strike out rates as a tiebreaker. I think HRA is similar. Use it as a tie breaker. Somewhat you can move up certain players, but it wouldn’t change the tiers much because higher tiers will get you more in the other stats.

  57. elwood blues says:

    So Grey, would you trade Latos for J-Z.. zimmermann that, is.

  58. DILinator says:

    First time commenter, long time reader! I love your site Grey, and have turned many of my Fantasy Baseball friend on to it! Unfortunately, I no longer have that advantage over them now… ;) Thanks for all the hard work you do, and all the laughs you have given me!

    Quick question: If I wanted to advertise openings in leagues I am running, is there an appropriate place on the site to do that? I am looking for experienced and knowledgeable owners, so I figured this site would be the best place to find them. Thanks in advance, and keep up the good work!

  59. Kazmere says:

    @Michael Bourne: Hardy…… har. Last season I got Lester in May for two of my closers, and flipped another + a mid-tier OF for CarGo. Won my league.

  60. Big Nate says:

    In my 14 team auction keeper league, we extend our roster and hold a separate minor leaguer draft. Last year, I ended up with Hellickson for $10 and Moustakas for $5. I could keep each of these players for $13 and $8, respectively, and they will not count against the $260 salary cap. Then, I could keep them for $3 more each year thereafter.

    Would keeping either one of these guys be more valuable than keeping Aaron Hill for $9? If so, which one? Is Moustakas going to get starting gig out of the gate? What’s his upside? Is he the next Longo?

  61. Big Nate says:

    And as a note for the above, keeping Aaron Hill at $9 would come out of my $260.

  62. MagicTerp says:

    Just finished my money leaguw auction. Pretty psyched about my team. But punting saves – SAGNOF! What else do I need to focus on?

    Love this “Anyone that has read this site for any extended period of time knows I love to punt middle infield and go for upside”

    Ive been doing this for years and has worked miracles. Glad to see someone else has the same views as me. Love the site and keep up the great work!
