0Chase Utley will make his first start of the year on Monday in the Phillies’ 47th game of the season. If only the Yanks would lend out Suzyn Waldman for the occasion…Oh my goodness gracious!…Of all the dramatic things I’ve ever seen! For those of you who carried Utley on your DL since Opening Day, congratulations. The word is that Utley’s knee feels okay. I’ll put the over/under at 90 games for the rest of the regular season. I wouldn’t expect classic Utley this year (as in .300/30/110/15). I think he’s going to look a lot more like last year’s Utley (511/75/16/65/13) for the rest of his career – minus a couple of SBs. Second basemen don’t age gracefully and he’s 33 with a bad knee. If someone will trade a top 50 player for him, take it.
Other fantasy baseball news…..
Asdrubal Cabrera – 5 for 5 with 2 HRs and 5 RBIs. He’s now at .302/32/9/32/6. He managed only 9 HRs over 900 ABs in 2009-2010. Where’d all this power come from? Is he that mad the Indians picked up another Cabrera and he had to add an “A.” to his jersey? If that’s the case, the Indians will win the World Series if they could just find an Orlando-Soo Choo and Orlando Santana to add to the roster.
Felix Hernandez – F-Her has been just so-so this year – paling in comparison to other AL starters who have the luxury of facing the Mariners. Luckily, the schedule rewarded him with a start at Petco against a Padres offense that fell back to reality (5 runs in last 5 games). Given all that, it’s not so surprising that F-Her went 8 IP, 1 ER, and 13 Ks. The surprising part is that the Mariners supported him enough to give the win.
James Shields – A 3-hit shutout over the Marlins with 13 Ks. He’s now K’d 7 or more in 6 of his last 7 starts and is second to F-Her for the K lead in the AL. He’s got a bright future ahead of him. And when it doesn’t look bright anymore, I’m sure the Rays will just trade him to the Angels.
Rick Porcello – One hit the Pirates over 8 scoreless innings. He’s rocking a 3.08 ERA now over almost 50 IP. I have a feeling that ERA is going to mushroom over the next 50 IP unless he starts K-ing more people (5.5 K/9).
Marlon Byrd – On the 15-day DL after an Alfredo Aceves pitch broke his face. Lucky this game wasn’t in Toronto or Aceves would’ve been arrested for hitting a Byrd. In all seriousness, hope Marlon is doing okay. Some players don’t come back the same or have subsequent sight issues from an injury like this (see Dickie Thon and Tony Conigliaro). Two uplifting cases are Ron Santo who came back from a broken cheekbone in 1966 to resume his HOF-quality career and Willie McGee whom I presume took multiple pitches to the face yet persevered and had over 2,000 hits in his career.
Fernando Salas – He’s gotten the last 4 saves for the Cardinals. When asked by the press if he’d named Salas the closer, LaRussa replied, “Why does he need another name? Fernando is a great name. It’s my favorite ABBA song.” The beat writers laughed because they thought it was Kyle Lohse performing another LaRussa impression. Little did they know that LaRussa has already swapped in 4 relief pitchers as his stand-in over the last week.
Jason Heyward – Off to the DL with a sore shoulder. He’ll be replaced by Eric Hinske and Joe Mather. That’s like replacing Hank Aaron with Hank Azaria.
Nate McLouth – Left Sunday’s game early with an oblique injury. No word yet if he’s going on the DL but….really, when does someone injure their oblique and not go on the DL? Really, Nate McLouth, do you have some sort of oxygen chamber that can heal obliques? In any case, McLouth has cooled off (4 for last 32) after showing some signs of life in early May. I’d McLose him from just about any team outside of super deep leagues.
Edinson Volquez – 2.2 IP, 6 ER, 11 baserunners against the Indians. Guess he knows how Custer felt. A real letdown for all those (including me) who got excited by his previous start (6 IP, 3 ER, 9 Ks). In 10 starts this year, he’s failed to pitch more than 6 innings and has only two games where he’s given up either less than 3 walks or less than 3 ER. We don’t even start him in our NL-only league – if you’ve got him in a 12-team mixed league, Ay Dios Mio, drop him already.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia – HR’d both Friday and Sunday. He’s hitting over .300 in his past 10 games. Who’s ready to jump on the Salty bandwagon? Yeah, me neither. I’m as confident in him as I’m confident in David Ortiz being able to spell his last name.
Albert Pujols – He’s now gone 100 ABs since his last HR. I may be off by a couple but I think Jose Bautista has hit 700 HRs during that time.
Juan Miranda – 1 HR and 4 RBIs over the weekend and Russell Branyan got DFA’d. Those are two Miranda rights. But he got hit on the wrist with a pitch in the 8th. That’s the type of wrong that can ans will be used against him in the court of fantasy baseball. If the injury is minor, Miranda suffices as CI or UTIL filler as he should start most of the time (with Nady getting a couple starts a week). If he’s hurt, maybe we see Brandon Allen!
Gio Gonzalez – What’s the difference between Gia and Gio? Both are sexy but Gio is a lot more predictable. In his last 4 starts, he’s pitched between 6 2/3 to 7 innings, 0-2 ERs, and 6-8 Ks. Now if he could only control pitches (over 4 BB/9) as well as he could control the weather.
Brian Fuentes – Lost his 6th (!) game of the year on Sunday when he gave up a run in extra innings. Yet he only has 2 blown saves. He might have a shot at 20 losses if they let him focus on Kazaams when Bailey comes back.
Javier Vazquez – Grey and I drafted this schmohawk on 3 teams this year – including our 13-team NL LABR team. In that league, you cannot bench a player that you drafted unless they are sent to the minors or the DL. So we had to suffer through 8 horrible starts, one more awful than the next. If our ERA/WHIP was in a Lifetime movie, it would be huddled in the back corner of a shower. We’re praying that the Marlins just put him on the Disgraceful List just like the Red Sox did with Dice-K and Lackey. Nope. The Marlins believe in him and he’s supposedly healthy. Next start against Tampa. Jeez, we think, if the NL is crushing him – imagine an AL East team? Since we can’t bench him, we have no recourse but to drop him. So what does the bastard do? Goes 7 shutout innings and strikes out 7. The bastard hadn’t topped 6 IP, 5 Ks, or less than 3 ERs all year! Our only solace will be if someone else in the league picks him up this week because of this start and he starts turding all over their ERA/WHIP.
Which group of players would you take in this trade? Team A has very deep pitching and 2 above average pitchers to replace both Jered Weaver and Romero.

I got a good chuckle out of Heyward and the Hanks. That Utley line looks good in a 2b position I look at as weak from bad depth rather than injury. Has it been that long on Pujols? He is 12 AB short of Hill’s lack of production.

Only thing worse is a player that you think will break out every year, which does not happen until you finally give up and let another team draft him. Here’s lookin’ at you, rickie weeks.

This is a continuation of my questioning to Grey last night re: me having Lind, Heyward, and Strasburg on the DL and my league only has 2 DL spots available. The reason I’ve still got Stras is because we do offseason trades. If nothing else, he’ll hold some value there and I could deal him for draft picks or package him with someone else for a keeper. My question is whether or not I drop Strasburg and pick up a replacement bat. I can plug Morrison into Heyward’s spot, but I don’t have any more bench bats available. That being said, do you hang onto him, or drop him? If I’m dropping, who’s the pickup:

fwiw, unless yall keep most/all of your roster or strasburg would be kept at like a 20+ round value, i don’t know if strasburg would even have much trade value in the offseason.

Is Jeff Wilpon trying to destroy the Mets. This dude wakes up this morning and decides to insult the two best players on the team. What a fucking moron.
Mets chairman Jeff Wilpon opined recently that Jose Reyes won’t be getting a Carl Crawford-like contract.
Crawford inked a seven-year, $142 million mega-deal with the Red Sox this winter and Reyes will be entering the free agent market this coming fall. “He thinks he’s going to get Carl Crawford money,” Wilpon told The New Yorker. “He’s had everything wrong with him. He won’t get it.” Wilpon, of course, is referring to the many injuries that Reyes has battled throughout his career. It’s become apparent that the Mets will not be in the running to re-sign the shortstop and it’s possible that he’s even traded

“He’s pressing,” Wilpon said. “A really good kid. A very good player. Not a superstar.” Wright is off to a slow start this season, batting just .226/.337/.404 through 39 games, but he’s averaged an .893 OPS, 27 home runs and 106 RBI per year since breaking into the majors in 2004 and is widely considered one of the top positions players in baseball. In a 12 team mixed league I have Furcal coming off the DL but right now I have Asdrubal lighting it up at short for me. My question is do I just drop Furcal outright or do I drop someone less significant like Alex Gordon or Posada and Roll with 2 SS’s and try to play matchups? I mean I know Furcal will probably be back on the DL by July so maybe I just drop him to lose the headache, but I’m not sure….
@ThePoonTycoon: it is my 8 Team league. I’m not leaving a lineup spot open, I just have no bench bats. I put Morrison into Heyward’s spot, but it does force me to use Dunn at UTIL. And to explain our keepers, we keep 5 – just the 5 you want, no draft round implications, etc. Our draft just essentially starts in Round 6 with the team who finished 8th. I talked to some of my league mates about Strasburg a few weeks ago, saying that I wouldn’t drop him unless I had to, and they all said if I dropped him and if they could fit him on their team, they would. So that lead me to believe that maybe someone would have a slight bit of interest in the off season. What do you think?

Same with Wright. He’s a valuable fantasy baseball commodity, but his stock in real baseball is plummeting. I have friends who are Mets fans and the last player they want to see at-bat in a big spot is David Wright. Does anyone really think David Wright is the same player that he was 3 or 4 years ago? No way
Albert Pujols is nearly a third of the way through the season and he has more GIDPs than extra base hits. Asdrubal Cabrera has more homers than Miguel. Russell Martin has as many home runs as Brian McCann, Buster Posey and Joe Mauer…combined. You can see why that guy thought the world was going to end. That’s some cats and dogs living togther stuff.
Never in my life have I felt less confidence in a pitcher on a team I was rooting for than I feel for Brian Fuentes. He is beyond terrible. It really makes you question the sanity of the folks running the A’s that not only does he continue to get appearances, he’s their closer. It’s madness.
Tabata or Dominic Brown as my final OF this week? Not in desperate need of speed which is why I’m thinking Brown…but I don’t know how many games he will actually pay in.

Whom do you like for overall solid production? Bloomquist, Wigginton or Seth Smith?
I’d ideally like someone who’d play both games, and Seth Smith would be my first choice, but they’re predicting Tracy will sit him in the first game against Saunders.

It’s tough, I know. But you have to roll with it. I’m sure that dropping Napoli means you won’t ever get him back. And for what? A catcher that’s hot for a week? He’s hit 20 HR three years in a row. Heck, if you go to FanGraphs and look at the ZiPS rest-of-season forecast, VMart and Napoli will produce the same numbers, save average. But you don’t draft a catcher for average.
My advice: stick with him. He’s in a good park and has only had 3 off-days in the past 10 days. In addition, he’s actually getting really unlucky. His BABIP is a hundred points off his career norm.

Hey folks, apologies if this is out of leftfield, but would anyof you cats be interested in taking over a team? The 3rd place team ( in a super competitive/active, 15 team roto league I commish) has stepped out for personal reasons. Suffice to say; this is no scrub team (as can be seen below) and you’d have a better shot than most at winning. It’s a non-keeper, but we have the same core 14 every year and all of them are highly active managers. Stats are 8 x 8, 25 man roster.

Since all the perts are taking the day off, I’ll throw my 2 cents, got about an hour to waste before i can actually leave work… here we go. (keep in mind my insight means absolutely nothing, but i’ve played fantasy baseball for about 9 years now, am in a 12tm al only dynasty 5×5 and a 12 tm NL only dynasty 5×5 and have won both of them several times).

Whose to say that the guy replacing them nets you zero fanatsy value and you released Stras to get them. 0 for 0 is better(because it doesn’t hurt you in periph hitting cats) than 1-30 and no Stras

Someone tell me why the fuck Bartolo would be throwing fast balls to Bautista with 2 outs and nobody on? 3.5 and 3.0 in HR/rbi
9.5 and 11.0 in wins/saves
but that will change .
at the out-set , my goal was to improve upon my 9 keepers
and field a competitive team by 2013 .
these trades , along with drafting hellickson , strasburg , and bruce ,
suit my purpose .
