Don't be shellfish...FacebookTwitterGoogle+

Yoenis Cespedes homered in yesterday’s second day of kinda real baseball played about six hours before I wake up.  I wonder where Cespedes is being drafted now.  When Rudy and I took our giant beach balls to early March drafts and took Cespedes in a bunch of drafts, he was going cheap.  I wonder if now all those other ‘perts are suddenly stepping up because others are excited about him.  I wonder if everyone else is a Monday morning quarterback with their advice.  I wonder if Yoenis will hit 30 mistake pitch homers.  I wonder if he’ll make adjustments and hit for a decent average too.  I wonder how this would sound read by Morgan Freeman.  Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in spring training (and real baseball) for 2012 fantasy baseball:

Bartolo Colon – 8 IP, 1 ER, 4 baserunners, 6 Ks. I still wouldn’t go near him with a three foot churro. (Only partly because waving a three foot churro near Bartolo would be similar to going to a grizzly bear observatory wearing nothing, but bikini briefs made of Marshmallow Fluff. Talk about a Fluffernutter — oofa!)

Mike Carp – Mike Sashimi ended up on the DL after one game playing in Japan.  He should’ve never said, “Come on, pal!  Fugu me!”

Jason Vargas – 6 1/3 IP, 1 ER, 4 baserunners, 3 Ks.  I think Vargas is gonna have one of those seasons where you think because he’s the Mariners’ number two that he’s gonna take a number two on your stats, but he won’t.  For now, I’ll call him a Marginer with future appeal.

Jesus Montero – 1-for-3 as he started his 2nd straight game at DH.  Uh-oh.  I was hoping to see Montero start at least one of these games at catcher, but now it’s looking like he may only start when Olivo rests, which would mean once or twice a week behind the plate for Montero and mid-May for catcher eligibility.

Dustin Ackley – 0-for-4, knocking his season pace down to 81/81, but will probably come closer to 8/8, which looks like what Dorothy Hamill would put after her signature.

Justin Smoak – 1-for-4 with a homer.  Is there anything more satisfying than a home run for a guy you pick for two games before the season (actually) starts?  It was almost as satisfying to drop him right after.  It was like a one night stand where everyone has the same expectations.  (I promise you when there’s a full slate of games I won’t talk this much about the A’s and M’s.)

Jonathan Broxton – Royals are leaning towards Broxton for the closer role.  Perhaps a see-saw isn’t the fairest way to determine who should get saves.  Broxton is such a wild card at this point that you have to hold onto Holland in most leagues until he shows some level of dominance/health.

Carl Crawford – Looking at returning at the end of April.  With a wrist injury, I’d choose to March.  Valentine said he’ll only need 50 ABs in rehab, I said, “No, no, no.”

Bobby Abreu – The Los Angeles Suburb of Los Angeles Angels almost got rid of the Abreu-tross from around their DH neck last night.  He came inches from being an Indian, but now the chances of it happening have reduced to 50%.  If it happens, it’s better for both clubs.  I’m just not sure how much better it will be for Kendrys’s playing time.  Abreu wasn’t stealing much time from him anyway.  Stealing time from Kendrys is the fact that he missed 273 games in the last two years because he celebrates like a buffoon.  Angels have already said Kendrys will sit vs. lefties because of health.  Not because of the sourpuss with the big contract that they can’t get rid of.  Yeah, I used the word sourpuss.  Now get off my lawn!

Freddy Sanchez – Expected to start the year on the DL.  Welcome to the club, we expected that in October of 2010.  That’s like predicting a fart two years from now will smell.

Jeff Samardzija – Won a spot in the Cubs’ rotation.  He’ll be in the first Buy/Sell of the season later today.  You can hardly wait.  No, you.

Brian Wilson – Bochy said Wilson was never scratched on Wednesday, he wasn’t supposed to pitch.  So Brian Wilson owners can Smile.

Chris Perez – In five pitches, he threw a complete inning.  After the game, he said, “The quicker the inning, the more time for mullet grooming.”  He should be fine for Opening Day (The One Not Starting Between 3 AM and 6 AM.)

Scott Podsednik – Told reporters he’s not making the Phils’ roster with them opting for Juan Pierre.  Can’t him and Juan Pierre get into one pair of Ryan Howard’s pants and be a stealing hybrid that sounds like a French revolutionary, Robspierre.

Adam LaRoche – Returned to the Nats lineup after nursing a foot injury for, like, two weeks.  Is it me or is LaRoche always hurt?  He should change his name to Adam LaOuch.

Carl Pavano – A police search warrant revealed that a classmate of Pavano threatened to reveal a homosexual affair with the pitcher if he didn’t buy him an SUV.  I’ll never look at his porn mustache the same.

I think I did ok. I still need one more closer, but anybody even worth handcuffing is gone. I have too many hitters on my bench, but Utley will end up on the DL, and I hope I can trade Ike or EE for a Brain Freeze (is that a fair trade?). Should I drop Pena for a middle reliever who can get me some Ks?

@DrEasy, team looks like it will compete, drafting Utley didn’t help your infield much. Too many bench hitters, but like you said, maybe you can trade for a closer. Not a bad team at all, could see some average issues, but nothing major.

What is the ideal SP strategy for a league with no IP or games started limits but that restricts streaming by charging for transactions? It has a 5 man bench so I’m thinking get a minimum of 7 SPs?

    • Sweeney says:
      (link)

@schlitzy, If I were you I’d use my last several picks on middle relievers with strong ratios to game the IP limit, and devote a “normal” amount of your draft resources to SP. If your have 9 pitcher slots, for me that would be 3 closers, 4 middle relievers, and 6 SPs. This leaves you one bench slot for a high potential bat, but if there are no good fits there you could add a 7th SP.

Drafting extra SPs that wouldn’t hurt your ratios tends to be way more expensive than reasonable middle relief contributors.

    • Big Magoo says:
      (link)

@VOTTO-VOOM, Since you have a middle infielder slot, I assume there’s a corner as well? Looks pretty good – Lawrie’s a weakness at short even in a 16-teamer. Either Escobar or Cozart would be better if available. Assuming M. Harris is Matt Harrison, pitching looks solid. Volquez’s value is in his strikeouts, so he’s garbage in this format though. See if you can get a low-Whip guy like T. Hudson, McCarthy, or Alvarez on the cheap. Well done.

    • Sweeney says:

@blairtch, Chapman! His role is still TBD, and if you hold him for a few days right now there’s a chance you’ll get a surprise announcement as closer or something. If his role is still murky, Zambrano and Peavy will still be there for you as backups (agree on Z>Peavy)

@ujoh, pitching looks good to me…..but your right about AVG and SO…..Lind scares me with his back.

    • Big Magoo says:
      (link)

@ujoh, Pitching looks solid. You’re right that the avg looks light, but that’s not as big of a deal in H2H. You’re a little speed-heavy and power-light though. Braun might be your only 30 homer guy. I’d look to deal Stubbs or Upton for another power bat.

      • ujoh says:
        (link)

@Big Magoo, Upton gets no love in my league. I get made fun of for drafting him every year. His .230 AVG scares off everyone, despite the fact that he can go 20-30 in his sleep. I could deal Stubbs, but won’t get a “great” power bat in return. Speed seems to be easier to find this year than in years past. I also feel like Cutch will hit 30-30 this year, but that’s me being in love with my team and overprojecting everyone’s stats…..

        • Big Magoo says:
          (link)

@ujoh, I agree that guys like Upton and Stubbs are usually undervalued because of their avg. I like them too – I own them both twice each across my four money leagues. But with your team makeup, it would benefit you to move one of them for some more power. I’d try to deal whichever one of them has more perceived value in your league so you can maximize your return. Maybe a Reynolds type? You’d gain 15-20 homers in that one spot in your lineup, and only take a small avg hit. I like Cutch too, but I see closer to 20-25 homers from him. PNC Park is rough on right-handed hitters.

Big trade being discussed in my Yahoo league: Kinsler, Stanton and Buchholz for Prince, Kendrick and Gio. Which side do you like better? I think the Prince side wins.

    • Tony says:
      (link)

@Jon, I’d want the prince side, prince/kendrick is pretty even with stanton/kinsler power wise, better on the average side, gio > bucholz….. i also don’t believe in stanton as much as others, at least if it’s h2h, roto he’s more valuable…

      • Jon says:
        (link)

@Tony, yeah, it is H2H. Gio to Buchholz is a pretty big dropoff in my eyes, which is probably the biggest reason I like the Prince side better. Agree with you. Thanks!

      • L-Boogie says:
        (link)

@Tony, Not sure which side I like better. Depends on need. But I do think that the 2 sides are NOT even power-wise. Stanton can hit as many HRs as Prince and Kinsler combined (30-35+10-15?) Not saying it’s going to happen, but it’ll be close. Then kick in another 30 for Kinsler. Average, runs, RBI might be a different story, but it’s not close power-wise.

            • Big Magoo says:
              (link)

@Wilsonian, I’d try to make room for him in a keeper. He has nobody blocking him in the bigs and he’ll be at least as good as Morel immediately (by June/July this year), and top 7-8 at third by 2014.

              • Wilsonian says:
                (link)

@Big Magoo, My only worry right now is Lawrie not being fully healthy, ever. So I wanted a backup. Morel might be hitting 2nd, too, so he might be a good backup for when Lawrie sits. I’m looking at dropping him for Arenado once things start to play out a little, or I may get itchy and do it soon.

@Howie Met Your Mother, Are you talking 40 innings for the season?

      • Howie Met Your Mother says:
        (link)

        @golfnut,

Sorry, I mean per week. My league has a minimum of 40 innings per week to qualify for pitching stats.

        • golfnut says:
          (link)

@Howie Met Your Mother, you wouldn’t come close to 40 innings with 3 closers. They average 3 innings per week….multiply times 3….that’s only 9 innings per week…..maybe 12 if you get lucky.

          • Howie Met Your Mother says:
            (link)

            @golfnut,

My question is/was; after factoring in the average # of innings per week that 3 closers would net you, how many “typical” starts would you need in addition to those closer innings, to reach 40 combined innings.

    • Sweeney says:
      (link)

@Howie Met Your Mother, each closer = about 3IP/week. Each start assume about 5.5 IP. So for 40 innings you need 31 to come from starts, that’s about 6 starts.

@Thomas, Team is a tad light on power and a tad high on speed… Can trade a bat for an SP if you like… Your pitching doesn’t look bad though…

  34. Henry Rodriguez – I am interested in picking him up

to do so I have to either drop –
    Mat Gamel or
    Brent Morel

    or I could pick up
    Dayan Viciedo

there are holds and saves in this league

    or I can hang out

    • PrinceRudyNasim says:

@Mr Baseball, damn bro dropping Gamel would be tough. You will be so pissed if this kid ends up coming thru. H-Rod throws “harder than f$%k”( kenny powers voice) but lets remember its still is H-Rod. I feel like that dudes whip will never be good enough to be dominant. Hes not worth dropping Gamel this early in the yr. If you need holds i would see if Mujica is avail. in your league

12 team H2H keeper – would you trade Teix for Upton or Kemp? That would leave me without a first baseman but with outfielders to spare in a trade for someone like Morales, Freeman, Duda. If I couldn’t make a deal then I’d be looking at a FA like Aubrey Huff at 1B until LaHair gains eligibility or someone decides to trade with me:

How many of my 5 bench spots do I want allotted to pitchers? My gut is to drop Alonso (dont ask) now for a pitcher to stream, and Ortiz as soon as the next SAGNOF roadrunner emerges. My current arms available are:

Wandy, Jhoulys, B Norris, C Sale , D Holland, Colby Lewis, M Minor.

    Thanks in advance

@HoosierDaddy, Thanks! Nope, not much to add other than a lack of speed… Your pitching is kinda ridiculous though, you could trade Zimmermann for Gardner and be fine…. I’d go with all bench arms, maybe one bat… Your league’s so shallow bench bats aren’t going to help much… If you want, try to trade Ethier and Ortiz for Gardner…

  44. Hi Grey, I asked a question this morning and it didn’t appear. I tried to re-load the same question and it said it had already been submitted. I assumed it needed some approval because it contained a web link (albeit one to a Razzball forum question I wanted to lobby you to weigh in on) but it never appeared. Did something strange happen today? Am I *gulp* blacklisted?

Anyway, there were two questions to my question.

First, does the news you reported above after reading it elsewhere about Perez mean it’s wise to drop Vinnie in a non-holds league? Am I better off with a decent setup man who might get saves like Glen Perkins or Henry Rodriguez?

And second, I have Doumit as my catcher in two semi deep (14 and 16 teams, mixed) leagues: one where I’m waiting for Jesus (Montero) to gain catcher eligibility and one where Doumit could stay on the roster all year. Mesoraco is available on waivers in both leagues … your post on him seemed to indicate he might start slow as he gets settled in. Does that make Mesoraco a bad choice to employ for the month or so it’ll take for Montero to gain eligibility? Should I switch out for Mesoraco in the league where I don’t have Montero to keep Doumit? I kind of liked the idea of Doumit playing some in DH and OF but there’s a buzz around Mesoraco.

      Grey says:

@Enrique, Nah, site’s acting funny with comments with links… No idea why… Rodriguez over Pestano… Mesoraco and Doumit will see about the same PT. Couple of game per week…

@Enrique, I cleared the comment on the back end.

      • @Grey, Sorry for all the multiple posts there … something funky was going on on my end or yours.

        And thanks for the answers!

  45. I just tried to re-post the forum link and it didn’t go … I guess links to the Razzball site itself aren’t allowed. But any chance you could weigh in on the forum question entitled, “Lineup check – looking for opinions” in the lineups, waivers, keepers section?
