The other day I looked at the pitchers that were getting lucky for fantasy baseball. Today, we hold that up to the mirror and see how the other half lives. You know, the losers that should be winners. The Jon Cryer’s of the world. Or is he just a loser? How about these guys are the Ronald Miller’s? They’re going to go from total geek to total chic. These pitchers are either not leaving men on base at a normal rate and/or they’re giving up hits like there’s 7 Pat Burrells fielding behind them. They couldn’t get lucky with a bottle of Rumplemintz and Lindsay Lohan. But that could all change. Anyway, here’s a list of pitchers with the biggest difference between their xFIP and their ERA. (If your guy is on the list, it’s a good sign. Some would even say you could go out and trade for some of these guys, you educated fantasy baseball owner you!)
Ryan Dempster – 3.52. His ERA is 7.20. Honestly, it can’t get worse.
Matt Garza – 2.03. Buy Garza! Matt Garza. The guy in the front of this blurb. Immediately. He has a 2.14 xFIP. A K-rate of 11.78. After his next start, it may be too late to buy him. Go. Now. This post will be here when you return.
Travis Wood – 1.78. I kinda love Wood, um… *blushes* His buy low window is rapidly closing.
Francisco Liriano – 1.58. But his xFIP is 5.49 and his K-rate is abysmal, which is only topped by his egregious walk rate. Nothing’s changed from when Rudy said you should try and sell him last week after his no-hitter.
Chris Narveson – 1.35. His K/9 of 8.54 is purdy and his 3.03 xFIP is nothing to sneeze at unless you’re allergic to those sorta of things.
Ervin Santana – 1.32. Another guy whose K-rate looks solid to go along with a solid walk rate. Before too long, we may see magic from Ervin.
Yovani Gallardo – 1.21. Seriously, every pitcher I own has been unlucky. Been a really tough first month-plus for the stache. Gallardo should get 3.75 ERA by year’s end. And by ‘year’s end’ I mean, hopefully by next month.
Daniel Hudson – 1.14. I’ve been pushing people to be patient with Hudson, now you see the why.
Madison Bumgarner – 0.72. His innings last year still concern me, but he’s pitching well. Well, better than it appears.
Edwin Jackson – 0.70. Crazy how unlucky my pitchers have been to start the year. Not crazy good but crazy like I want to stick my head in a oven.

Which side do you like? Dunn + Beckett for Morneau + Garza. Thanks.
Grey what should you look for in return for lirano?
I mean Uggla for Pedrodia, is it worthy? thanks
Lowrie or Izturis for 2B going fwd 12 team H2H
Very deep 6×6 with QS. Which two do I drop from Wolf, FGarcia, Richard, Litsch? Thanks.
@Timequake: Dunn
@mets fan: Anything
@henW: Nope
@EK: Lowrie
@bill: Litsch, Garcia
@Grey @Anybody Why is Steven Sharpe the hottest search trend on rotoworld?! Stupid prank or….?
Of the guys listed up there, Dempster, Wood, Narveson, Santana, Bumgarner and Jackson are sitting on the wire…if you throw in Danks, Myers, Peavy and Floyd, which two would you recommend picking up?
@Grey. Btw thank you for everything, you seriously are a great help. Your posts are seriously too funny. Thank you!
@Grey – Just moved Berkman for Uggla to stop the Beckham/Hill bleeding @ 2B. Reasonable?
Hey Grey,
In my AL Only 10 Teamer I just got an offer where I give Chris Perez for Jason Kubel. I have Wallden and Rauch.
What do you think? Thanks in advance.
Clue
Grey: I feel your pain. I own Garza, Hudson, Gallardo, Bum and Jackson on a majority of my teams. I couln’t agree more about scooping up Garza. I think he finishes as a top 10-12 SP.
Question: J. Sanchez in S.F. is scaring me. Do you like him going foward as a #3?
Comment: About 10-14 days ago I told Razzball nation about my case of beer bet that the Grandyman hits more than 32 homers. Most commenters laughed at me? You still laughing Grey? You a believer?
Pence or Rasmus?
@Grey: wow your that down on him?
@Grey: Head in the oven was how Sylvia Plath went. Might want to shoot (pun intended) for a more masculine approach a la Hemmingway.
Too dark?
Oops. Left this at the end of the last post. . .
Would you rather have Oswalt or Kuroda the rest of the way? I’m not chasing any particular category, as my pitching is pretty putrid across the board.
@EK: Pence
So dude I’m trying to flip Dunn for declined Dunn for Hudson and offered me Carpenter instead. Ugh. No go, corrigido?
/RW Vegas spoiler alert
The show is scripted. I just found this while hacking the Viacom mainframe:
PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR: What are your expectations for what happens when you meet your father?
NANY: Honestly? I really… don’t… have any expectations whatsoever.
— later in the script —
[during a tear-filled confessional]
NANY: I just want my dad to know that I never gave up looking for him, and I know that he will be so proud of me for that.
I believe that is the dictionary definition of “no expectations”; nicely done, Nany. Okay, you caught me, I just made all that up. But really, what other explanation could there be for what’s happening this season? Mike Mike’s dorky girlfriend who has everything in common with him? She’s a plant… I’d say flown in from one of the Carolinas but based on MTV’s budget and her pot belly, I’m gonna’ go with low-price escort. Irregardlessly (<– my favorite non-word), it's a total Truman Show move at the very least.
Bee tea dub, I would watch the shizz out of a Mike Mike & Leeroy: The New Odd Couple spin-off. Hell, the two of them should be the entire cast for a new season of Jersey Shore.
How about Mat Latos at -0.85? Or does his velocity drop preclude any potential bounce back? His K rate is actually up, but the walks are also up. But his HR/9 and LOB% all look unsustainable. I know you were avoiding Latos like the black plague so I should be trying to get someone to “buy low” on a talented pitcher with good peripherals or do you think he turns it around?
As a follow-up to #20 – would you drop Latos for Wood?
@TillmanLover: No idea.
@Chili Davis Con Carne: Bum, Wood…
@TillmanLover: No worries, thanks for the kind words!
@AnotherFalstaff: Yup
@Clueless: Sounds good.
@Dr. Stats: Sanchez is a WHIP killer, he’s fine for Ks. Grandy’s over under is 30 HRs. 32 isn’t absurd.
@EK: Pence
@mets fan: Well, you’re not trading him for something you can get on waivers, but just about anything. You obviously want the best anything you can get.
@OaktownSteve: Never too dark.
@Earl Battey: Oswalt
@p0rk burn: Bleh
@Awesomus Maximus: Didn’t read your comment because haven’t watched it yet. Thanks for announcing the spoiler.
@Ian: I worry about his IP from last year.
Dynasty League Trade Question – I have very solid SP (Veralnder, Lester, Hanson, D.Hudson, Kuroda, Beachy, Wood) and am in serious need of some bats. I, like most, hate Mark Reynolds at this point and can really use some solid production from third. I’ve been rocking Wilson Betemit but once Moose gets the call up Betemit will hardly play. I believe I can trade Lester and obtain Jay Bruce and Mike Moustakas. Which side do you like better knowing my current situation?
Is Alcides still a viable SS option…best options on the wire are Batrlett, Carroll Wee Willie Bloom and Bonifacioeioifosfhe
Sorry about that my giant tears just rolled down my cheeks, splashing on random buttons.
And who do you like better the next couple seasons? Bruce or Grandy?
@Grey: Correct your priorities, esse.
Grey,
I just read somewhere that matt holliday is a sell-high candidate and brian roberts is a buy low because of their babips…so if that’s true, what do you think of this trade in a 4 OF, 12 team league:
Holliday/Espinosa for Kershaw/Roberts
I’d be trading Holliday and my other OFers are Kemp, J-Up and Tabata and my SPs are Oswalt, Marcum, Gio, D. Hudson, Ed-Jax, Wood, Pineiro, Vol-fml-quez…so I can drop volquez for an OFer (brantley’s out there, plus others)
Thanks.
Drop Volquez for either Narveson or Wood? I don’t have to start whoever I have in this spot any time soon.
I already bought Garza in my most serious league three starts ago, dealt BJ Upton for him too and I think the guy thought he was fleecing me. Not that Upton’s awful, he needed speed, but I think that trade is gonna come up roses for me. As much as the K/9 Spike is encouraging, he’s also suddenly transformed into a groundball guy, which was really what had me shying away from him on draft day.
Here’s a question: I own Liriano. The best offer I’ve been able to get for him has been Ben Revere. Obviously, there are better buys on the wire. Would you drop him for Travis Wood at this point? If not, would you drop Masterson for Wood? I’m leaning against it but obvioulsy feeling tempted with each passing Liriano stinker, or Linker if you prefer.
My biggest worry with Wood is that he’s a flyball pitcher in a bandbox with a 5.5% HR/FB and that his SwStrk% is only average right now and doesn’t match his high K/9 spike, which is probably inflated because so few of the balls he has put in play are being turned into outs (we saw something similar with James Shields’ K/9 last year). I do think Wood is a buy guy right now, but I think he’s ultimately not even quite as good as his xFIP suggests, more like a ~4.00 ERA guy with a slighly above average K/9 and WHIP, which is passable in a 12-team league but nothing to go crazy over.
There’s probably something similar going on with Garza and his K/9 spike, but the difference is his SwStrk% has also shot way up and his GB% is at 48% compared to a career 40.1% mark. I could see him keeping his K/9 over 9.00 for the rest of the year and putting up an ERA right around 3.00 pretty conservatively.
looking at pitchers: kennedy, beachy… who do you think jason bartlett would prefer for an eiffel tower? and as a pitcher? i like beachy a lot, i like kennedy a lot. you think kennedy in the long run? oh, and this is no keepers, for what it’s worth.
as for keeper leagues, who of the young hitters are you targeting? hosmer, brown, moustakas? dirk diggler? im always hesitant/intrigued when these young dudes come up…
@Grey: Hey dude. Move DLR for Garza, if possible?
@The Vaporizers: Lester
@Shea Sera Sera: Ha… Bartlett
@The Vaporizers: Bruce
@Awesomus Maximus: I know.
@Exactly: I’d want Holliday.
@ujoh: Wood
@Mark: Wood over Masterson.
@ivebeenupforthreedaysstraight: Yeah, Kennedy…Brown, Hosmer…
@The Situation: Yup
@ujoh:
I like Wood. I’ve dropped Volquez on most of my teams. Volquez has the highest upside, but he is a bit of a headcase with major control issues—the opposite of Wood. Good luck.
“Crazy how unlucky my pitchers have been to start the year.”
did u ever stop to think that edwin junkson is just not that good? i mean come on dude, his BEST season ever was in 2009 (3.617 era, 1.2617 whip)… and those numbers weren’t even that good. that year his babip was .276 (lowest ever for him), and his FIP 4.28, xFIP 4.32.
“unlucky” with your pitchers? HA. are you kidding me?? there’s no unlucky here. this guy is junk, always has been and always will be.
aside from 2009 (which was obviously a fluke), he has NEVER posted an era less than 4.424 and a whip less than 1.396. AND his K rate isnt even that good! (6.67 in his best year). he pitches in the AL, in one of the worst parks for pitchers. etc etc etc. so essentially at the BEST CASE scenario i get a 3.60 era and a 1.26 whip, with ooookay strikeouts from an AL pitcher?? thats like a #8 or 9 starter where i come from… aka waiver wire fodder. he just shouldnt be considered fantasy relevant, period.
how can you seriously call yourself an expert by drafting junky guys like this in your leagues and then convincing others to draft him too? and then you actually try and justify by calling him “unlucky”? come one dude, thats just wreckless and negligent. you couldnt PAY me to pick up this garbage off the waiver wire, let alone draft him.
As a bench/utility bat would you rather have Smoak or Kubel?
@Grey
Which five of these would you take (and in what order)?
Charlie Morton
Chris Narveson
Matt Garza
Daniel Hudson
James McDonald
Francisco Liriano
Alex White
Thanks.
@Mark: Do you have any sources that I can check out that show that Garza has improved his groundball rate? I, too, stayed away from him on draft day because he was a flyball pitcher moving to Wrigley. But, if his flyball rate has gone down and his groundball rate has improved significantly, then you have to love the move from the AL East to the NL.
Re: Garza. From a tier perspective, is he up with the Billingsley/Scherzer group? Better than Wandy, Marcum, D Hudson, Gio, Chacin, etc? Lots of names, but thanks for your help.
Working a deal for Garza where I give up a closer. How do you rank these jerks and would you give any one of them up for Garza?
Chris Perez
Leo Nunez
Joel Hanrahan
Jordan Walden
Kyle Farnsworth
@Grey: I’ve got the yips regarding Wright’s health.I may be able to swing a deal moving him and Ogando, for Longoria and Carlo’s bro Ervin. Good move?
@Charles: fangraphs…learn it, live it, love it
http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=3340&position=P
Humber or McCarthy for tomorrow?
re: #43
or Dillon Gee @ HOU?
Somebody offered me Neil Walker for James Shields in my 12-team H2H. Espinosa is my current 2B, and my other SPs are Haren, Billingsley, Beachy, Chacin, and Dempster. What do you guys think? Thanks!
This order look about right: Garza, MadBum, Gio, Hudson, Beachy, Zimmmmermannnn, Peavy, Bedard?
14 team H2H – With Raburn residing at 2B for me, trade Lowrie away for Rios?
Current OF/U is
OF Bruce, OF Rasmus, OF BJ, U Fowler, and U Morneau.
Grey, thanks for all previous help.
Which side? His Venters, Garza, Desmond for my Fuentes, Haren, Bonifacio
My other starters are Weaver, Beachy, Gallardo, Johnson and Sanchez. My other relief pitchers are Soria, Papelbon, Salas, Jansen, Rzepczynski.
League counts Holds as well as Saves at equal value and I’m short on Holds.
Is Garza going to be that good? Will Haren sustain his level of performance?
Grey please rank the following pitchers, thanks.
Masterson
Beachy
Wood
McDonald
Head to Head league standard scoring categories.
I think I got missed in the shuffle. Let’s try again. Drop Latos for Wood? Thanks.
20 teams. Would you drop Minor for Romo?
@Waldo:
I love Shields this year. Depends on your other SP depth. ROS Walker is an upgrade over Espinosa, but not enough IMO to lose Shields over unless you have a myriad of quality SP options. Good luck bro.
Grey, in AL-Only, what do you think of Pedroia and Trumbo for Shields and Jhonny Peralta? I am SP-deficient and my SS is Casilla. I dunno if this other guy goes for it though… SP’s seem really over-valued by everyone else in my league.
@Doug Ault:
I’m with you bro. I own Wright on a few teams and I’ve managed to pull of this deal: I gave Wright and Gordon, I got Longo and Pena. I just have a bad feeling that Wright will be DL’ed soon, or the Mets will blow up their roster by summer time thus hurting his numbers.
@Wiley: Smoak
@MouseRat: Chris Narveson, Matt Garza, Daniel Hudson, James McDonald, Francisco Liriano….
@Charles: They’re all close.
@AdamH: I’d give any of them up.
@Doug Ault: If you can…
@EK: McCarthy
@Waldo: I’d hold.
@zombie: Yup
@AdamH: Sure
@t-rex: Haren side…It’s fair.
@dave: Wood, Beachy, McDonald…
@Pierre: Nah
@Giant JJ: Eh
@rafi: Not crazy about it.
@rafi:
Dont give up on Pedroia yet.
Which side? Lester/Mccutchen or Kemp/Garza?
@Grey: Good stuff today. Please rank the following based on overall value for rest of year and beyond…B Wallace, Adam Jones, Trumbo. Thx.
grey,ross,ludwick,boesch,bernadina,willingham rank these please
grey if im up on innings by just a few,would you start beachy vs philly tomorrow,thanks
lonnie chisenhall just hit another HR.
do you think he will get called up this month, since the indians are competing?
Someone recently dropped wood in my league.. would you prefer wood over stauffer for the rest of the way?
@Sos: Kemp
@Gmen: Jones, Trumbo..
@AL KOHOLIC: I’d start Beachy. Boesch, Bernadina, Willingham…
@trick dad: June
@John: Yup
Also i was proposed this trade in non keeper no inning limit league..
Hudson for my Beachy
I kind of love hudson after the stretch he went on for my team last year. But i do love my rookie nookie but not sure about how many innings he’s gonna get this year.
What side would you want?
Billingsley or Garza?
please rank:
beachy
e jackson
t wood
bumgarner
e santana
narveson
thanks
please add norris to post #66.
(my bad)
@John: Hudson
@daniel p: Bills
@That guy: Bum, Wood, Beachy, Jackson, Norris…
@Grey re: @MouseRat
For real? Narveson over Garza?? Can you pass that shit this way when you’re done?
Grey, what do you think of Wood relative to zombie’s list in #46 (Garza, MadBum, Gio, Hudson, Beachy, Zimmermann)? What about Pineda? Thanks.
Oh great Grey one,best potential for saves,dunn thompson or jansen
grey, whats bryce harpers ceiling?
30hr? 40hr? .300 hitter? .330 hitter???
14 team league, 5×5, 4 keepers….
Uggla + Fuentes for Feliz + Danks.
Fair?
Be nice if Hudson could get some run support today. Mind you, looking at the respective lineups, it’s a wonder a run has been scored at all.
@Mark: @MouseRat: I copied and pasted incorrectly. Narveson should be at the end.
@Jake in Columbus: Wood after Bum.
@AL KOHOLIC: Dunn for right now.
@the grate one: Too far away.
@NF: Uggla
@Steve: Seriously.
Thanks Grey, I’m glad to see that 3 of my pitchers are on this list; it gives me hope! Is Soria a reasonable return for Liriano?
@Grey: Hudson has walked some guys today, not normally his go.
hey, what do you guys think: brian roberts or espinosa over rest of the season?

Trade opinion please Grey:
Tulo/Hudson for Lincecum?
Thanks for your help.
@Grey: Mike Pineda up with Wood or down with Beachy at this point? Thanks.
i’m going to draft the 1st player that i come across who’s last name is trow .
though , trough is an acceptable alternative .
Grey et al,
I want to make sure I was not crazy for refusing the following trade offer:
He offers Quentin, Alvarez, Tomlin and Padilla and I give up Kennedy, Billingsley, Beachy and Moreland.
Now, to put this in some context, I have been on the lookout for power and have expressed interest in Quentin. I look at the others he offers as useless to me (I am sitting on Reynolds so what would I need another worhtless 3B for).
What do you guys and three girsl think?
Thanks!
…and one more thing – would a Billingsley for Quentin trade seem reasonable.
Grey, I had also asked earlier about which pitcher I should offer for his Choo and you suggested D. Hudson. Still good?
Thanks much everyone.
funny clip on mlb-tv .
they got cutch to do the ‘carleton dance’ , to “it’s not unusual”
(tom jones) , after admitting that the fresh prince of bel-air is his
favorite tv show .
earlier , cutch said that he want’s to spend his career in pittsburgh .
check it out , i’m sure they’ll repeat the segment .
it’s called “intentiional talk” …. with kevin millar and one of the hosts .
Offered Weaver for Rasmus & Marcum…. Take it?
who do you like for a backup cf:
byrd or torres?
I’m second to last in RBI and last in average so I made the following offer to someone: Jaime Garcia/Tabata for Berkman/Brantley
Good offer?
I’d still have Kershaw, Scherzer, Romero, Lilly and Matusz coming back soon.
adam jones or rios?
Get Mad Bum for Mitch More?
Keeper League. Need some pitching help but not sure if Bum will be better long term value. Moreland has impressed me with AVG and power thusfar (even though the Grand Slam didn’t count).
I have G. Sanchez, E. Hosmer, M. Brantley, LoMo, G. Sizemore.
Thanks in advance.
nice: “we may see magic from Ervin”
I’ve picked up Ervin and Narveson (I figure I can take a spoonful of Narveson if I catch a cold anyway), and tried to trade for Hudson and Wood. Actually had an offer of Wood for Farwsworth that I blinked on after Wood’s last bad outing (he’s pitched better since). I might regret not taking that.
@Grey: he offered me Alexei Ramirez, Longoria and Erv Santana for Wright, Andrus and Ogando.Should I ?
@Doug Ault: its fair,matter of who you like
@AL KOHOLIC: My major concern is getting stuck with a useless Wright.I think Ramirez will heat up along with the weather………I guess I answered my own question
@Grey: @Al Koholic:
Would you trade Reynolds for Garza, I have wright already, and I need pitching
@everyone: trade Phillips/Chacin for Pedroia/Garza?
Hello yet again Grey,
You mentioned Wood in your article. He is available in our Yahoo 12 Team H2H League. Would you add him for one of the following:
H. Bailey
K. McClellan
E. Jackson
Thanks much.
Yikes, Bald Jim all over the shop today.
@MattW: Take it from someone who spent a 6th Round pick on Reynolds. Trade him for whatever you can get. Although I am still hopeful that he will start hitting, his production right now is grotesque (as you are well aware). Garza would seem to be a good deal.
Is it bad if you have 5 pitchers on this list?
I’m probably lucky to be 2-3 after 5 weeks.
Open hit-man contract: I need you to steal Jamie Garcia’s cleat inserts. I’m sick of watching this guy gellin’ through games the past two years. Pay is $25 per insert.
@Ault: jump all over that
@TravestyJones: Sure
@Exactly: Espinosa
@JMONTE: I’d want Tulo.
@Jake in Columbus: Beachy
@yankees2011: It’s fair, depends on needs. The side you have is a little better.
@yankees2011: Yeah, reasonable.
@EG: It’s fair.
@paulzone: Torres
@Jason: It’s fair.
@paulzone: Jones
@MackeySasser: Sure
@Shmorgie S. Board: Thanks!
@Doug Ault: Sure
@MattW: Yup
@Charles: Sure
@yankees2011: Over McClellan
@Titan: Yup
@Shrute Buck: Ha!
got offered chacin for lind? which side do you like?
Trade Ogando for Garza?
@Steve:
understand your concerns , but has the guy , once , pitched in weather
above 45 degrees ?
wish he was on another’s team , so i could steal him .
as it is , he sits until the temperature reaches 70 .
hopefully , it doesn’t take so long that he turns into a head-case .
Yo Grey, I have two if you don’t mind:
1) Which of Colby Lewis, Masterson, Bud Norris and Matt Capps would you drop for T Wood?
2) For utility spot would you prefer Smoak or Rios?
thx
@chata: Oh, I don’t own him anywhere, so was just really making an observation, but weather is not a factor I often take into consideration.
Hopefully the warmer weather will help a lot of my pitchers.
And my hitters.
Dread Pirate and Hip Hip Jorge not in their respective line-ups tonight.
@Steve: Good lord, that means that two of the three guys left in my line-up are Mini Donkey and Espinosa. Don’t think my .333 average for the day will last much longer.
@ Grey and all:
Which side looks better?
Lowrie/Lind/Pineda or Uggla/Garza?
would y’all drop Coco Crisp, Carlos Lee, KellJo or Narveson for Trumbo?
@Steve: Dreads got benched tonight for not running out a play last night, despite two long bombs.
@nyydj2: Ugh.
What is it with Grey and Cinci pitchers? Must be a glutton for punishment! Anywho, have to drop a player and it’s between Bay and Moreland. Can’t decide, thoughts?
@Steve:
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/blog/big_league_stew;_ylt=AmeDLodE7lQeE1XhkMzgnLGsO4d4?pg=2
@Exactly: Depends what you need. Lind…
@GTS: Garza
@Deeeeeez Nuts: Smoak…Masterson for Wood.
@nyydj2: Uggla
@brad: Lee
@MeanMachine: Bay
@chata: Makes Auckland weather look almost consistent
@yankees2011: the o,s are talking about sitting reynolds more and more if he cant start hitting,they expected a low average but with power
Watching Sportscenter I just realized that anchors and baseball commentators don’t say stuff like “he helps himself with a…” when a pitcher drives in a run, for like a decade now. Maybe they figured how stupid it is.
@SteNews/Analysis Headlines Preseason Outlook
McCutchen disciplined for effort: Pirates OF Andrew McCutchen was held out of the starting lineup posted for Thursday’s game against the Dodgers as punishment for not running out a ground ball out on Wednesday night, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “I talked to Andrew today and he understands,” manager Clint Hurdle said. “You can’t look past it. You can`t stick your head in the sand. We`re a team.” McCutchen went 0 for 4 on Wednesday against the Dodgers.

ve:
@AL KOHOLIC: Hurdle is such a managerial genius, who are we to argue with him?
O’s considered more time off for Reynolds: The Baltimore Sun reports that Orioles manager Buck Showalter did consider sitting out slumping 3B Mark Reynolds for an extended stretch in order to try to allow him to regroup, but he currently has no plans to do so. Reynolds was held out of Wednesday’s lineup against the Mariners. “We’ve considered it,” Showalter said prior to that game. “Obviously, [we sat him on Wednesday]. You kind of look what the other options are, and right now, we’re giving him a day not starting. We’ll see what tomorrow brings. I’m going to have a conversation with him between now and game time and get another feel for where he is. He’s a 27-year-old man. This is not some guy who has been playing in the big leagues for 100 years. This is his fourth or fifth year in the major leagues, and this is his first year in this league. Some people will tell you his strikeout totals are down, comparatively speaking, but I think he’s aware that where he is offensively, he’s capable of better and we need better.”

Thanks for the help, Grey…one more question…would you offer kemp for either cliff lee or kershaw? My top starters are oswalt and marcum and I have offense to spare, especially when david wright remembers how to play baseball.
Should I drop alcides Escobar for the purple dinosaur?
hosmer yes
would you give gordon for kennedy, garza, or kuroda. How would you rank them?
I don’t know about anyone else in this forum but I’m rooting for Edwin Jackson to kick butt and go lights out the rest of the year and win the Cy Young Award, and the for the asshole in post#35 to step in front of a #@&*#%ing bus an hour after it’s announced
@Tom Emanski: Ha!
@AL KOHOLIC: What a mess.
@Exactly: Nope
@Chicago Mike: Sure
@AL KOHOLIC: Wow
@pipa: Kuroda, Garza…
who do i drop when lomo returns?
Peter Bourjos, Raul Ibanez, Roger Bernadina
weekpoints league, have Posado at Catcher…trade Bumgarner and Carlos Gonzalez for Carlos Santana and Gio Gonzalez
Traded Liriano for Garza straight up. Did I do well?
@aj: Ibanez
@ChiSox: Nope
@daniel p: Yup
Grey – help
I get: Tulo and Rasmus
Give up: Hamilton and Jed Lowrie
hosmer or smoak?
woa,beltran with the 3 peat
ok .
i can’t be the only one who went scurrying back to comment #35
completely convinced it was me .
Hey Grey you like Masterson for Garza? I want to trade him before the wheels come off.
@Paul: Sounds good.
@Deeeeeez Nuts: Smoak
@AL KOHOLIC: Wow, indeed.
@chata: Ha
@MeanMachine: I like it.
Who is the best of this bunch?
Ted Lilly, Fausto Carmona, Kyle Drabek, Jason Hammel, Jake Arrieta, Brandon McCarthy, Erik Bedard,
hey grey, just wondering, I’m fairly new to razzball, do you post in-season rankings (other than closers)? would save a lot of us from asking “do you like this guy over this guy,” kinda like how your draft rankings convinced me to draft Pena when everyone passed on him…he’s heating up!
@chata: i did to,they should have an age limit for this site ,like atleast 10 years old,you take the information he gives us and apply it to your league and situation,they are all different,is grey right everytime,no way in this wacky weird game of baseball,is his percentage of being correct far superrior to other so called experts? yes it is, ill tell you 1 thing,i think others copy him,i continuously see similar articles by 2 ,3 or 4 others a day or 2 after grey post it,but he,s a big boy im sure he can take a little bullshit here and there,keep up the great work boss
@Grey: I was just offered Stubbs & ARod for Dunn & Weaver. Good deal? I have plenty of SP’s.
Anyone know if the Pitt/Dodgers game is going to resume? Garland was looking good and I could use the QS.
@Gmen: id love stubbs this year as long as k,s dont count,and i own A-rod in 2 leagues,he will come around
Who would u rather have, Bailey or Wood? Both are on the wire. Would have to drop Peavy or Bedard.
@AL KOHOLIC:
Grey just has the clearinghouse on speed-dial .
@Grey:
hah … you snooze , you lose .
melky just raised the bar !
there will be other opportunities .
fret not .
Could you rank these 3 for the rest of the season, thanks
Stauffer, Narveson, Homer Bailey
Wood and Pence or Werth and Norris?
@chata: Sorry Chata, but when I think of the amount of time and energy that Grey puts into this site, comments like that get steam coming out of my ears.
@Grey: @Al Koholic:
Who do you like better Marcum or Garza?
Got me so riled I dropped Justin NoMore in three leagues and traded Liriano for a link to the fake BinLaden bullet in the head photo.
Grey,
In a keeper 100 move max league. I have streamed 3 pitchers this week to just keep up with my opponent but at the end of the week, he will have had 8 more starts than me due to a 4 start Monday and Sunday. If its going to take me streaming a pitcher every day the rest of the week to be two starts short, do I keep streaming or let him take QS and K’s? I am leading in Saves/ERA/WHIP, do I take the 3 and not run up my add/drop or chase him on the other two cats?
@MattW: i still have to take marcum,that whip and era will be lower than garza and your still getting top k rate
Hey Grey! So after reading this article I decided to go after some of these pitchers in my league. One offer I got was Charlie Morton and Brian Duensing for Yovani Gallardo, with me receiving Gally. Would you pull the trigger on this?? Btw Im in a 16 team league and starting pitchers are hard to come by because a W=10 pts. Thanks!!!!!!
@nyydj2: me to but if we argue with them thats what they want,so i try to zipp it but im a bit of a hothead
@aj: Lilly
@Exactly: Not until the All-Star break.
@Gmen: Stubbs side.
@MeanMachine: Wood…Bedard
@ChiSox: Narveson, Stuaffer…
@Cheese: Pence
@MattW: Marcum
@nyydj2: Ha!
@Mr2Bits: Save your moves.
@Lubey: I like it for you.
Who wins Liriano for Garza?
@Lubey: his whip wont ever be great but i think he,s still going to have a real good year,gallardo that is,i would do that deal,there will be call ups coming
@Steve B: your kidding right,garza 10 fold
Hosmer for Bailey or Narveson sound fair to you? Either of them you wouldn’t do?
so i stream NOVA tonight bc its the yankees vs KC! and im already beat downin pitching cats H2H…….. great idea tony!!!
tomorrow im throwing two pitchers that were the worst choices, just to try and defy logic, because the logical choice isn’t working anymore!
WOW eff me in the Ace
Vargas/Britton looking like Doc/Felix vs. those potent Sea/Balt lineups tonight.
@AL KOHOLIC: Yea I know what you mean but Im afraid Morton might be a little too much. I think he may have a break out year; getting tons of ground ball outs…..Im leaning towards going with that trade though
@Steve B: Garza
@pipa: I’d want Hosmer. Or aim higher.
@Tony: Ha
@nyydj2: Yeah, ridiculous I can’t get a quality start from F-Her and then this happens.
@Grey: 5 x 5 roto, garza/chipper for dlr/moreland? which side?
thanks.
JZimm hot the heater zipping tonight with 11 K’s through 6. Unfortunately he let on a couple and Burnett came in, promptly walked a batter and then gave up the granny, no win for Zimm. Feel good about him maintaining the uptick in K’s though.
@Grey: also, youkilis/gallardo/hill for fielder/pedroia?
yeah for a second there i thought i’d get a win out of j-z tonight. i’ll guess i’ll take the 11 K’s though…
grey, are you still a believer in alcides escobar? he looks a long way from the .275 presesason projection. alcides or jhonny peralta?
Grey,
Should I trade Utley and Liriano Away for Garza? I have B.Phillips at 2nd base and oswalt coming off the DL next week. would this be a good trade for me? 5×5
@Grey:
Gordon & Capps for Garza? Hosmer & Capps for Garza?
I’m having a tough time putting a value on ol’ crazy Matt. What do you think?
Also, Can you rank my pitchers for the rest of the season? H2H 5×5
Liriano
Kennedy
Oswalt
Gio Gonz
Beachy
Marcum
Bumgarner
Cueto
Chacin
which side wins:
jered weaver and stephen drew for tulowitzki and garza?
@Grey Bourgeois or Bernadina for a keeper league going forward?
league playing touchy-feely
hardy !! ….. boy .
grey, with league really struggling…does anyone else in seattle get a shot? or is no one else even worth owning? lol
@Grey: I am flush on saves (Bell, Valverde, Santos, Capps and Padilla) and need steals. Not to make this a no-brainer, but some guy just offered me Andrus and Jaime Garcia for Jed Lowrie, Heath Bell and Sergio Santos?
I countered with Andrus and Jaime Garcia for Jed Lowrie, Valverde and Sergio Santos? But if he doesn’t take that – do you agree that taking the deal with Bell is a good trade for me? I am iffy on Garcia, but his peripherals are solid and Andrus is guaranteed steals at a position where I am playing a waiver wire pick up (Lowrie).
Higher-like Floyd or Anderson…those are his next tier of SP, then he has Halladay. I have 2 UT spots, and have Sanchez, Smoak, and now Hosmer…and have Votto at 1B. He is interested in Hosmer. I need SP help.
he also has Gio.
Would you drop D bag Volquez for Bumgarner now?
and cahill…sorry I had to go back and look at his team.
ya know , sometimes the world isn’t so harsh .
like when that slumping hitter that you’ve been benching for the
past week , finally decides to collect a couple of hits on a short
thursday , when you had no choice bet to play him … (butler) .
*edit*
bet = but
@herschel: Garza
@nyydj2: Yeah, nice start.
@herschel: Fielder
@tom: He looks lost, may as well go with a hot hand.
@tggq21: Eh
@Tele: Either work…Gordon first.
@tggq21: Oswalt, Marcum, Bum, Chacin…
@KCC26: Tulo
@Howard: Bernadina
@the grate one: Can try Wright.
@McBainus: Yeah, Bell deal is fine.
@the grate one: I was just thinking the same thing, but looking at the other options in Seattle, I have to say no. Wright and Pauley have been solid, but neither has ever closed (1 SV between the two- by Wright in AAA). Cortes has minor league numbers one could expect from a closer (high Ks, but also high BB), but has never closed and only has 1 IP in the majors this year, and everyone else has been utter crizzap. So I’d say that League is safe for a while.
@pipa: No idea what you mean.
@whodat: Yup
vulture win for Kimbrel makes me happy
I just realized that Kendrys Morales is missing another year due to celebrating a walk off grand slam (off of League, no less). This should be a lesson to all of you- never revel in the Mariners’ suffering! It’s an old sailors’ curse!
[says the guy who spot started Britton today]
I’m sorry. It was from an earlier comment you answered. I asked if you’d trade Hosmer for Narveson or Bailey and you said you’d want Hosmer or aim higher.
So who would be your choice as a higher choice to get for Hosmer.
Floyd, Gio, Cahill, or Anderson.
Would you drop Norris or Beachy for either Wood or Mad Bum or hold tight for now? I think I could let Wood and Bum sit on the wire for a bit, but Norris and Beachy will get snatched up, knowing this league.
@royce!: That’s hilarious.
@pipa: Anderson or Gio, in that order.
@Wilsonian: Nope
@Grey: I kinda figured. Not real sure I’d swing it, either, at this point in tine.
Glad I had Beltran and his -53.00 pts benched in Fantasy Razzball today…
@Grey: With big leads in W/ERA/WHIP/Ks, is there any neeed to start de la Rosa (v SD) or Gallardo (v Pirates in H2H tomorrow?
Opponent has Weaver and Norris going.
Elsewhere, any warm feelings towards Ogando, Humber, McCarthy or Gorz tomorrow?
@Steve: Wow, good break. Sit em if you can, Gallardo’s matchup isn’t bad though. McCarthy at home, Gorz…
@Grey: Merci. Sorry to interrupt your dinner.
@Grey – Ian Desmond is available in my league. My SS right now is Asdrubal Cabrera.
Options for dropping and picking up Desmond – Michael Bourn, Carlos Pena, and Torii Hunter…
SS is a thin position and Ian has value… but I am debating picking him up or just stand still. What do you think?
I play in a Weekly H2H league, standard 5×5 ROTO scoring.
Question for Grey and the peanut gallery…
Would you dump any of Swisher, Kelly Johnson or Bourjos in favor of Delmon Young coming off the DL? I’m considering waiting until tomorrow to see if Young is really healthy.
Who would you drop to claim Jonathan Sanchez off the WW, Colon or Harang?
@Grey:
Dump Alcides for Hardy?
Would you trade Gio to get Garza?
Hmm 1/5 into the season…looking at my RCL team…its doing OK, 5th place. When I went into the season, Grey said looks ok but you have too much SP’ing and not enough in the OF. Looking at my team, I have too much SP’ing and not enough in the OF. Damn you Grey!
Trade Hellickson for Garza? fair, pointless, or ??
@William:
He’s got 12 steals!
@Grey:
So sit or start Gallardo? I was thinking about the same, sit but hmm the pirates at home…and would it make a difference HtH vs Roto?
I own four of these pitchers… It’s been that kind of year.
@Grey and everybody
Aardsma is off to see Dr. Yocum, and League has blown two consecutive saves.
Who’s the speculative pickup in the M’s pen?
@Shmorgie S. Board: i think he said wright earlier,then theres paulie,
@Grey: They guy took the Valverde deal, FYI, so I got to keep Bell. Then immediately afterward some guy offered me Michael Bourn for Tim Hudson – since I just added Garcia, I snapped that up.
didn’t see that. thanks, al!
Late to the party… Like others, I have a ton of these guys: Demp (off wiavers), Liriano, Ervin, Gallardo, and E-Jax. Probably for that reason it seems I need pitching more than offense.
I tried to get Garza for Billy Butler, but it was declined. The counter is Garza for Lind. I’m very tempted as our system uses K-heavy counters.
Is Garza worth giving up Lind?
@William: Hunter
@WDE05: Drop Colon…Can wait a day on Young though.
@Chris: Sure
@The Sequential Hermaphrodite: Kinda the same diff, but you can.
@BKK: Fair
@Elijah: Start him.
@McBainus: Cool
@Erik: It’s fair.
@Grey:
Assuming Young appears healthy tomorrow, would you drop Johnson, Bourjos or Swisher for him? I have Roberts and Lowrie who are both 2b eligible so I’m leaning towards Johnson, but Swisher has also been pretty terrible.
Posey/Hosmer or Wieters/Verlander? (points league)
I have Bailey – Narvseson on the wire… make the move?
