Hitter Profiles: Deep League Fishing

As the All-Star break signals the beginning of the second half, it is time to fill the gaps in our roster for the stretch run. Before we do, let’s revisit some bold hitter predictions for the month of June. For my first prediction, I postured that Giancarlo Stanton would come back from the injured list blasting homers with thirteen in the month. For this one, he did come back but was barely worth a roster spot with his three homers, so that is a fail. My other prediction was Ronald Acuna leading the league with eleven steals. He in fact did lead the league with thirteen steals, so I am claiming a win even though this looks less than bold in hindsight. With that assessment out of the way, let’s jump into this week’s hitter profiles looking for second half targets hiding deep in free agency.

Buy (Sell?) Maikel

Jeopardy! Contestant, “Okay, let’s see…All right, Lady who has replaced Alex Trebek, I’ll take ‘Mikhail Gorbachev Not Maikel Garcia‘ for $200.”
Lady who has replaced Alex Trebek, “Glasnost and Perestroika were famous economic policies introduced by this Russian President.”
“Who is Maikel Garcia?”
“Sorry, no.”

Maikel Garcia is not Mikhail Gorbachev even if that’s what you hear every time. The first thing people ask Maikel, when they see forehead is not, “Can I call you, Birthmarkhail?” Maikel Garcia has been leading off, and Maik’ing great contact. He won’t be in my top 100 for the 2nd half (dropping next Tuesday), but I strongly considered him. His numbers don’t look that different than guys like Andres Gimenez, who was an easy consensus top 100 guy in the preseason. If Maikel can hold down the leadoff spot, he could go 5/20/.280 in the 2nd half, which would sneak him into the top 100 for value. Now, stop asking him to tear down this wall. Tigers Shop At Spencer’s Gifts

I’ve been giving the Tigers a hard time, unlike the contact their hitters make. Okay, okay, that’s enough. It’s time to dig in on Spencer Torkelson (2-for-3, 4 RBIs and his 10th and 11th homer, and 3rd homer in two games). You have to dig deep because his prospect status has sunk so low. All right, that’s not nice. Seriously, I need to look at Torkelson. Yikes, that’s a jump scare. In 187 games in the majors, he has 19 HRs, 2 SBs and a .210 average. Josh Bell is a bad hitter; Torkelson is a bad-hitting Josh Bell. Call him Gosh That’s Hell. Any hoo! He’s young and he just had his best month in the majors, 7 HRs in just under 100 ABs. He still hit .180-ish, but baby steps, Gosh That’s Hell. Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:
