1. SS Carson Williams | 21 | AAA | 2025
Featuring double-plus defense and easy power from the right side, Williams should be the everyday six for Tampa sooner than later. He posted nearly identical lines through 115 games each of the last two seasons, slashing .257/.356/.497 in 2023 and .256/.352/.469 in 2024. His 142 wRC+ with 20 home runs and 33 steals in Double-A put him on a path to the majors impeded mostly by the organization’s machinations. Sure, he strikes out a bit much and could benefit from a short stretch in Triple-A to get heated up, but he might be able to change the playbook with a spicy spring.

Please clap for Busch’s slash line of .323/.431/.618 with 27 home runs across 98 Triple-A games in 2023. Now that he’s out of Los Angeles and being all but handed the first base gig in Chicago, he can finally stop faking second base and fully flower as a hitter. Or so goes the thinking that led the Cubs to acquire him, anyway.

1. SS Junior Caminero | 20 | MLB | 2023
Caminero smashed 31 home runs in 117 games across two levels, slashing .309/.373/.548 with a 17.1 percent strikeout rate in 81 Double-A games on his way to a late-season promotion to the show. To my eyes, he’s the leading candidate to open the 2024 season as the club’s starting shortstop. Maybe they go a different way, considering he’s not a great defender and has spent a lot of minor league time at third base. Tim Anderson feels like a good fit on a prove-it deal, if they’re looking for a moderately priced option in free agency. Taylor Walls is a possibility, in house, but he hit .201 last year and got worse throughout the season. If he can handle the workload on defense, Caminero has the talent to rejuvenate a team and fanbase that will be missing its missing building block until it manages to forget him.

I reference mlb.com throughout this piece because it’s not a pay-walled site, and they update the rankings regularly. Makes it a nice shorthand for perceived value in the real-baseball sphere.
Padres C Ethan Salas is a sell for me as a top ten prospect (No. 5 on mlb.com). It’s amazing that he made it to Double-A as a 17-year-old, but also, should he be in Double-A as a 17-year-old? I mean, what’s the point? He didn’t hit in High-A (.229 slugging percentage in nine games), and then he didn’t hit in Double-A (.214 SLG in nine games). I guess the defense can push the profile, but at some point, he’ll have to wait for the bat. And then we run into a high-minors, stall-out situation. We’re just now reaching the other side of that with Luis Campusano. It stands to reason that Salas might receive a red carpet that never got rolled out for Campusano, but that’s still years away, and the return you could earn for shopping Salas this winter or next spring probably beats waiting for me.

The Giants swapped Luis Matos out for OF Wade Meckler, a mustachioed lefty with a great approach who’s been hot all season across several stops, slashing .379/.463/.522 with five home runs in 69 games across three levels. Well, four, now that he’s gone from High-A to the majors in a matter of months.
The Cardinals recalled 1B Luken Baker, who was hitting .334 with 33 home runs in 84 Triple-A games and should play a lot from here on out or at least earn himself more than a dozen starts.
Please, blog, may I have some more?Dynasty drafts come in several shapes and sizes. Some leagues break the player groups into veterans and prospects. Some leagues let you draft 34-year-old relievers right alongside 16-year-old little brothers. I don’t really have a favorite way to cut it up. I just love the game. Though I will say the Razz 30 has something special going on with a prospects-only draft and a vets-only auction that becomes, at its core, a bums-only auction. It’s about two weeks of slow-bidding Steven Brault up to $21, and it’s a treat like few others in the fantasy realm. Jose Martinez once sold for $96. Michael Pineda went for $62. Zach Davies for $36. Two of those are purchases of mine! The fun never ends! Well, except when you ask MLB owners if they’d rather make money or take all the different balls and go home.
Anywho, I’ve broken this year’s First-Year-Player Draft rankings down into tiers and included some snippets about where my head would be during those spots on the draft board.
