There’s no Reyes, Rollins or Hanley on this list of shortstops.  This list is guys that can be had later in your drafts if you’ve punted shortstop or are still looking for a middle infielder.  Look at this as a supplement to the top 20 shortstops of 2011 fantasy baseball.  If you’re feeling especially adventurous, click on the player’s name to read more about them or to see their 2011 projections.  I’m going to start this list of targets at the 122 ADP cut off.  You say, “Arbitrary!”  I say, “Why are you saying arbitrary to a computer screen?  No one can hear you.”  Anyway, here’s some shortstops to target for 2011 fantasy baseball:

Ian Desmond – I dropped a killer no whammy no whammy…. double whammy! post on you regarding Alcides Escobar and our good friend that neither of us personally know, Ian Desmond.   That’s right, I went bi-postal and I’m bi-winning.  Liked Desmond last year and he only seemed to disappoint.  (Seriously, look at his numbers compared to other shortstops.  He wasn’t that bad.)  I like him again this year.  Don’t fear the Nats.  No one else does!  Oofa.

Stephen Drew –  He was the reason for the 122 ADP cut off.  I really like Stephen Drew.  I have convinced myself that at the age of 28 he will break out.  Possible signs of this:  his walk rate last year was (barely) the best of his career, he has speed for 10 steals and the power for 20+ homers and he was once a top ten prospect… Okay, five years ago.  But still, he’s 28.

Alcides Escobar – How does a shortstop go from stealing 40+ bases in Triple-A to stealing 10 in the majors?  I don’t know and that alone is my reason to think Alcides has to steal more this year.  Yes, it is that scientific.

Asdrubal Cabrera – Da ‘drubal!  Love him!  Okay, I don’t really.  He’s okay.  But now with the injection of Orlando Cabrera!  Yeah, that doesn’t really change things much either.  I do like a good ‘drubal when I can get him on the cheap.  That’s what she said!  Yeah, I don’t think that makes much sense either.  Moving on…

Jason Bartlett – It’s true, I don’t like Jason Bartlett.  How’s that for the hard sell?  But he’s being drafted around 279th overall.  Really, he’s that bad?  Rhetorical!  No, he’s not.

Reid Brignac – There was a study done by the University of Washington that basically says you don’t like what you can’t pronounce.  Yeah, that’s a complete lie, but I do think that’s why people love Jay Bruce and dislike Reid Brignac.  Okay, that and Brignac is only getting a starting job for the first time this year.  You, quibbler!

  1. Rob says:

I’m trying to convince myself to use an early pick on Elvis Andrus, but hard to justify drafting a 2 category guy(R, SB) that will bring nothing to the table in HR, RBI, and AVG(not so concerned about AVG).

On Yahoo he’s number one on all the analysts overrated ranks as well. Maybe this will cause his value to actually slip relative to value.

I get what you are saying with compared to the rest of the crew at SS he could be special, but still hard to pull the trigger on him opposed to waiting for one of these scrubs to fill in.

  2. Steve says:

Carry-over from previous post. Uehara has had what’s been described as a ‘precautionary’ cortisone shot in his elbow.
    Um, yeah.

  3. WillieMayesHayes says:

Punted SS…then missed out on Desmond & Alcides.
Asdrubal or Brignac? 6×6 league, OPS the extra cat.

  4. Tarasco's Secret Stash says:

Hey Grey, how come Storen plummeted so in this week’s Closer Look?

  5. Schmohawks Bob says:

Do you consider Ike Davis to be out of the Top 300? I’m considering keeping him in an NL only league as a CI for five bucks. Slim pickings once you get to CI.

  6. Buddo Chezuski says:

Thanks for the post Grey. I have a feeling with the way my picks are set up in my keeper league that I’ll be drafting one of these guys.

Where does Nishioka fall in this pecking order of SS (since he has SS eligibility in Yahoo I think)??

  7. Frank Rizzo says:

What is the situation in Tampa? Reid, Sean Rod, Zobrist. Is Reid an everyday SS going forward? Will Sean Rod get enough starts at SS to become eligible at SS in Yahoo? Will Sean Rod be an everyday guy? It’s a effin soap opera.

  8. Wilsonian says:

Regarding Elvis the Pelvis Andrus…read somewhere that he packed on 10 lbs. of muscle this offseason bringing his total bodyweight up to a sturdy 140. Ha!

But in all seriousness, this could bump his HR totals to the 5+ area (praying for 10-ish), and make him a little more valuable.

This has been your Public Service Announcement.

  9. Tom says:

Grey, You chose the wrong Escobar. I’m liking me some Yunel if he hits in the 2 hole for the Jays where he is projected by most sites. Surprised he was left off this list since his ADP is 220+.

  10. Wilsonian says:

Speaking of Sean-Rod…would you drop him in a 16 Team H2H Keeper for any of the following (who are on waivers at the moment):

    Nishioka, Moustakas, Ackley, Harper?

I really hadn’t planned on it, but those guys are available for the time being. Sean-Rod is set to be my bench/super utility guy right now.

  11. LMack says:

How hard would you go after Drew in an OBP league? If he holds the gains in his BB%, he could be a solid 5 category contributor, albeit a little boring to own at times.

Is jumping him in the 7th too early? 8th? And do you think Drew is solid enough for me to wait and take a flier at 2B, i.e. Aaron Hill, in a 12 team league with no MI spots?

  12. NewBVick says:

Drew and Desmond really stand out here. Drew takes it pretty easily IMO, though I don’t see a breakout year. While Desmond will likely go 10-15 and I think his average will regress.

  13. OaktownSteve

    OaktownSteve says:

Two word answer to why Escobar stopped running: Ken Macha.

How long would the pole with which you would touch JJ Hardy have to be?

  14. Tom says:

You are easily surprised. Must be nice when you get the hiccups.

  15. royce! says:

That UW study is so wrong. I had a friend visiting from the bay area recently and he wants to open a banh mi shop so we were talking about banh mi a lot for like 5 days. After he left my wife pointed out that every time I said “bAAnh mi,” he would say, “bUnh mi” (ie, it sounds like bun, not BAA + n). I never noticed, which must have been seriously annoying him. My point being, I love banh mi, and I can’t pronounce it. Though I can properly pronounce pho, so it was with great pleasure that I discovered the new pho joint nearby, “Pho King.” Serious.

  16. Cookie'sMonsters says:

In your closer article you dropped Marmol from 1st in your preseason rankings. Why the changes?

  17. The Chew says:

I saw Steven Drew play against Jeff Francoeur in High School, and Drew hit one of the furthest line drives I’ve ever seen to dead center field. I bet he hit the ball 500 ft on a rope, and he was nothing but a skinny kid then.

Of course, Francoeur was a beast in High School too. Whatever that means….

  18. The Dude says:

Which set of 5 would you rather keep? 12 Team H2H standard 6×6 with OPS and Holds

    Group A:
    Miguel Cabrera
    Ryan Braun
    Shin Soo-Choo
    Elvis Andrus
    Carlos Santana

    Group B:
    Miguel Cabrera
    Shin Soo-Choo
    Tim Lincecum
    Elvis Andrus
    BJ Upton

  19. PepeSilvia says:

    Group A definitely.

  20. Andy says:

No Starlin? He was money for average and slitties for his short stint last year. Some positions would rather not hurt than actual help, and a bottom rung short stop is pretty much that.

  21. chata says:

got my mlb package the other day .
    watching the royals/angels game , now .
soria blew thru aybar , player x , wells (single to right) and struck out vernon looking , as wells had 2nd base stolen .

2 things …. hunter who stole 9 bases last year , and got caught 12 times ,
vows to steal 20 bases this year .

soria’s public announcement that he doesn’t want to be called the ‘mexicutioner’ anymore …. due to drug/gang bullshit going on in mexico .
prompted a whole discussion on another blog site , about what his new nickname should be .
one poster wondered …. “what if soria started hitting people in the head ?”

  22. J!m Future says:

In a 12-team H2H public league I joined, some guy already got cold feet about Wieters and dropped him for Martin.

As the guy who waited until last round and grabbed Iannetta, this is a no brainer to burn my #3 waiver claim priority on, right?

  23. Carns says:

Hey Grey do you think Boesch is any threat to Raburn’s ABs?

  24. LMack says:

Soria suggested the nickname, “His Mexcellency”

  25. Razoredge says:

6×6 (ops) – who would you choose from this group? Can only keep one.
(already have Dunn at $12, crawford $34, delmon $6)

Hanley$50 (the SS for scarcity, or take one of the bats below)
    Pujols $50
    Braun $43
    Longo $40

  26. Asdrubal Bastardo says:

A possible reason for Alcides’ lack of steals last year could be that Ken Macha is notrious for not sending his runners. With Macha gone, and Alcides on the Royals, I see Alcides finally running (not to mention the Brew Crew as well).

  27. Tony says:

@Grey: what do you see as Rasmus’s batting average ceiling?

  28. Dan Meyer says:

I’m giving R. Cano and Vlad for Beckham, Pence, and Liriano. Actually I gave; am I a genius or a fantard?

  29. Nate says:

It’s not that I don’t like what I can’t pronounce…I just don’t like Brignac because he hasn’t done anything notable with the bat since he was in AA 4 years ago. His AAA stats of .267, 17 HR, 10 SB in 839 plate appearances don’t impress me…nor do his MLB stats so far. I’m fine with a 2 category player at SS, but Brignac is a no category player.

  30. mike says:

    Help me pick two Keepers
    thank you Grey. Love this

    Cargo Rd.12
    Votto Rd.2
    Bautista Rd.24
    Buster Posey Rd.25

  31. Nate says:

@mike: I’d go with Votto and Posey. Votto may be the best 1B in the game right now, and you’re not going to get better value than Posey out of your 25th round pick.

  32. Eddy says:

Neftali Feliz started today against the Indians. He allowed two hits, walked one and hit a batter in a scoreless two innings.

I don’t know, this beginning to look interesting…

  33. Wake Up says:

Is it just me or is there not as much “value” this year? It seems like everyone I like, everyone likes this year. Where is the CarGo in round 12, Rios in the 16th, Pence in the 9th, Scherzer in the 23th?

  34. papasmurf says:

I love the choices of SS so much that I have two 2b now and no SS…

Aaron Hill and Brian Roberts LOL. Roberts slipped to 210+ in my league’s slow draft so I decided to take him. One of the two “should” end up being halfway decent this year right? Right? RIGHT? RIGHTTTTT? **smurf freak out**

  35. xenocide says:

there is only one option at SS in an auction league. Pay whatever you have to for Hanley
