I’m a big fan of the everyman. I consider myself the everyman. I’m every man’s everyman. A pioneer of normcore. Track pants and a blinking light on my car’s dashboard that either means my seatbelt isn’t on or I need oil. That is me. What better way to elevate the Everyman Culture than to take part in a tourney where no one is smarter than anyone else. Enter the RazzSlam, a Best Ball tourney. Every everyman likely knows what a Best Ball league is, but, if you don’t, it’s when you draft a team and the computer manages it for you by choosing who are your best players, and you get those stats. It’s basically one fantasy league removed from the robots taking over and killing us all. Well, the last laugh is on you robots, cholesterol is beating you to the punch! Kinda love that Razzball is putting on a tourney (hosted by NFBC — thank you!) that no one really has any clue how to strategize. A true everyman experience. Oh, I’m sure there’s a few people who think they know the correct strategy for Best Ball, and a few of them might be right, but there’s an under 1% chance they know why they’re right, and it isn’t just luck. In some ways, Best Ball leagues are a lot like Best Ball strategies. Throw a ton of them out there and a few good ones will rise to the top through sheer force of players’ performances and nothing you’re actually doing. That’s the fun. Anyway, here’s my RazzSlam, a 42-round, Best Ball 12 team draft recap:

Psyche! Before we get to the RazzSlam recap, the season’s first Buy/Sell is available on our Patreon, click that and sign up. It won’t be live on this site until next Friday. Anyway II, the RazzSlam recap:

ALL RIGHT, YOU GIANT BOZO, GIVE US YOUR WAR ROOM TOTALS

Mr. Al Capps, the name calling has to stop.

OKAY, YOU CLOWN, WHATEVER YOU SAY!

What’s wrong with you?

I STUBBED MY TOE AND I’M ICING IT. SORRY, JUST NOT A GREAT START TO THE DAY FOR YOURS TRULY.

Oh, okay, feel better. So, there is a War Room for the Best Ball drafts like the RazzSlam, but, I’ll be honest with you, I winged this.

FIRST OFF, IT’S WUNG, NOT WINGED, AND SECOND OF ALL, GOOD FOR YOU. FINALLY THINKING FOR YOURSELF.

I appreciate that, especially since you’re just my internal monologue.

WAIT…WHAT?

Yeah, you’re just me screaming.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Sorry, bro. It’s true. Here’s the scoring so we can at least try to make heads or tails of the league:

Here’s some points accumulated by players last year:

Spencer Strider (596)
Gunnar Henderson (594)

THE TOP PITCHER IN FANTASY WAS THE SAME AS GUNNAR HENDERSON? THAT SEEMS TELLING.

It’s telling me pitchers are so much less valuable in NFBC’s Points Leagues.

I SET YOU UP, YOU KNOCK ‘EM DOWN.

I do my best. Put up innings and potential wins and you have a chance to be a valuable pitcher. Last year, Chris Bassitt had 487 points. About 100 less than Strider. On hitting side, Brandon Nimmo had 529 points (less than 70 points than the top pitcher, by the by). Nimmo illustrates what is important on hitting too, but is pretty on par with the Player Rater. He was the 29th best outfielder last year on the Rater, and he was the 29th best outfielder in points at NFBC.

SO, THIS IS BEST BALL AND YOU DON’T HAVE TO ADJUST YOUR LINEUP. THERE’S NOTHING TO DO NOW, RIGHT? JUST LET CHATGPT SET YOUR LINEUP AND KICK IT WITH YOUR BOYS?

There’s a few FAAB waiver wire pickups throughout the season. Watch Truss’s RazzSlam and RCL columns and he’ll be sure to notify you when they’re coming up. The first FAAB pickup is quick, April 9th, then the next one isn’t until June. Otherwise, you just sit back and let the computer choose your best lineup. This also played into how upsidey I went with my draft. All you need is nine decent starters each week. In theory, your worst starts won’t be used, so if you go for upside guys it should be fine when they get blown up. I wish I had other BestBall elements in my life. Give me BestBall dentistry. My teeth get cleaned in the best way when I need it and no superfluous brushing or visits to the dentist. Give me BestBall avocado toast. Only when the avocados are just ripe enough do they get smushed on the best piece of toasted sourdough. Give me BestBall boxers. Just the right amount of comfort. Call them BestBalls.

I THINK YOU’RE DESCRIBING A FUTURE DYSTOPIA WHERE HUMANS MAKE NO CHOICES AND COMPUTERS DO EVERYTHING.

Sah-weet!

Grey, 12 TM 5×5 redraft would taking Strider at 9 be a bad move? I really think he will end the year we look back and are like damn, the #1 fantasy player was a pitcher. 300+ k 20+ wins etc…

If yes, Would you cut Hunter Harvard to pick up Mize?

Thanks!!

Hey Grey. Guy in my league really wants Langford.

Jordan walker + King or Bieber for Langford

I know how much you love walker so I’ll take this with a grain of salt, but do you think that’s enough for Langford?

Thanks brotha!!

Closer question; Robert Suarez has basically locked in the closer role for the padres, and I added him to my saves plus holds 10 teamer before he got his save against the dodgers in Korea, however Mason miller is available.

The dilemma: Mason miller surely has better stuff than Suarez, but is on a much worse team, however he could theoretically put up some of the best strikeout ratios in the game. do you think he’s gonna get enough saves to be worth dropping Robert Suarez for?

Also for what it’s worth, miller had a MUCH better spring than Suarez. Not that I put all that much stock in it, just Suarez has a crisp 7.11 era and less Ks

Hello Grey! Good luck with your team(s). Nico in the 3rd seems kinda high to me, but what do I know. I don’t – that’s why I’m here. I know you liked him.

They have finally moved Sonny Gray to the IL, so I have an empty spot. Who do you like from these available SPs in our Yahoo 10 Team H2H Points League (SPs can score high with Wins being 10 Points):

M. Meyer
J. Hicks
N. Cortes
C. Mize
L. Severino
Gil
K. Crawford (he comes off Waivers on Thursday – I should know, as I put him there – yeah, I can’t control myself these days – probably should have kept him)

Gonna guess Crawford, but let me know.

Thanks much Grey.

Are you taking any shots on severino bouncing back? Could he have been tipping his pitches? He was so bad last year.

Are you concerned about Morton’s whip? That walk rate has steadily crept up the last 3 years. Last year it was 11.6%.

Hi Grey,

12 team roto redraft 5×5 OBP

A – How’s my team overall? I ended up punting SS and getting Correa for $1, then after the draft spending $2 out of $100 FAB on Merrill for his SS eligibility as soon as he was named a starter. I also picked up Yimi off waivers and I’m crossing my fingers Megill is the #1 sub for Devin Williams.

B – Who are my first drops or trade attempts for saves vulturing? I’m leaning Javier but I’m also not sure I need two CFs and two SS’s.

C –

C – K. Ruiz
1B – B. Harper
2B – L. Arraez
3B – J. Ramirez
SS – C. Correa
CF – J. Duran
OF – J. Soto
OF – K. Tucker
UTIL – Y. Alvarez

SP – J. Steele, M. Keller, M. Kelly, H. Brown, C. Javier, S. Lugo, Y. Kikuchi

What do you think of these specific trades (follow up to my question from below):

Snell for Volpe
Joe Ryan for Riley Greene
Mitch Keller for Torkelson or Gorman
Civale for Santander or Gelof
Pivetta, Kutter or Eovaldi for Mountcastle, Parker Meadows, Kelenic, Grissom or Frelick
Gavin Stone for anybody listed above

I don’t have any glaring needs other than I have too much pitching and would like another bat. He’s had a ton of pitching injuries so is looking for more. This is a dynasty league. QS is the only difference from standard 5×5. I’d like to send my trading partner a list of possible moves, so I don’t want to send him any that are terrible for me or him. Thanks!

I need depth and solid hitting. Nothing in particular TBH. I have extra pitching and want to deal from that depth to acquire another hitter. My lineup is flexible enough that I can make any of these guys work and they’d all help. Prefer finding power as I have a decent amount of speed. Any position listed (1B, 2B, SS, or OF).

Good morning good afternoon and good night. his mlb 3.5 walks I can live with I think per my effectively wild bs down below. he got pushed back on his off day before his last start and was and said he was off his routine. gave up 4 of his 8 spring bbs in that game. ironically helped him make the team as they liked the way he threw without A stuff. called it a great bad day.

I know you won’t love this, but spider sense says Merriestofweather leads the Cubs in saves this year. He’s been an almost a break out a couple times. Healthy and triple digiting. Adbert was wonky end of last year and his stuff just isn’t as good as Merryweather. I think Neris is pigeon holed as a non-closer high leverage.

Said with a knowing could be wrong face. Spider sense has not proven infallable.

On another note, I am killing time before the dairy order and I really don’t want to go back out there. It’s almost baseball season and I could talk ball all day.

Counsel said he isn’t naming a closer, which is odd. I might be wrong on this one. Just not sure why he wouldn’t just say Alzy is the closer. He was bad end of last year but seems healthy this spring. I think I’m on Merryweather because the 12.5 k rate and the big fastball read closer?

It would take a glitch in the matrix for me not to have a slew of injuries before Opening Day. I got shivved yesterday losing woo and another closer.

So what are you expecting from Woo now? It’s only “elbow inflammation.” Well that’s a relief (sigh).

My fear besides missing time is that they will baby him even more than they did last year.

Yeah losing them this late is extra painful. I was going to set my lineups and then I see that dtd designation and that blue box of death in Yahoo.

At our draft last week I came in with two protected pitchers, then drafted 13 more for a total of 15 pitchers on the staff leaving the draft. I have now had to replace 3 of them due to injury and have another 2 starting pitchers who will miss the first few weeks in J Montgomery and Taillon. Sigh.

Just snagged Ginkel off waivers. I think we need to strike these words from the records.

There’s way more closers this year in my top 100. SAGNOF? Yes, as in all closers are the same diff, so just get a few, but few is the key here. There’s fewer closers now than, say, eight years ago. There’s fewer saves too, especially off waivers. Do I care if you have Devin Williams or Jordan Romano? No, not really.

Hey Grey! 1 more day until we finally get started!!

In a 6×5, 10 team league, who would you prefer for your last roster spot Gavin Stone or Luis Gil? I was all set on Gavin until his blowup yesterday (4.1 ip, 4 er).

in a 14 team auction, H2H keep 6, 5×5 plus OPS, K and W, K/BB. Locked on Carroll $9, Adolis $9, Kirby $6. Which 3 of these 4?

War Room gives good marks for batting counting stats, but doesn’t love AVG, which is fine with me in a H2H. With pitching, it loves my rates and saves, but hates my K’s. Something to worry about, or just a matter of Steamer and you not agreeing on pitcher innings?

This is a cool format.

Question in regards to formats. I’m in a 12 team league standard categories but we do OBP and QS.

Where do you stand on daily waivers vs everyone is a free agent?

Some folks find that the daily waivers will allow for an even competitive advantage because those that are near their phones more often will have to wait to pick up a closer.

The other folks thing free agency just makes things easier when day of injuries happen or your player get scratched you can pivot day of and pick up someone.

Thoughts?

So there will be nights when walks get Hicks in trouble. There will be nights when he’s just missing edges or not getting call and the pitch count gets up. But guys are just not going to barrel him with any consistency.

I got to thinking about how interesting it was that in a year where we talked so mich about command plus stuff and the ultimate model for that modern style of pitching finally got his Cy Young in the AL, the NLs highest pitching award went to the guy with the worst command in the business. I think Snell’s success last year has been swept under the rug. But clearly there is another path to success than deploying an arsenal where you depend on creating difficulty for the hitter via sequence and command of multiple pitches.

Enter…Gavin Stone who also pitched last night and was meh. He gave up a bomb to O’Hoppe but he also had generally good control and got a K an inning, but the contrast with Hicks was striking because Stone’s pitches looked so hittable. Each pitch had a consistant shape and velo and when he located, fb and cutters up and in to both handed, breakers and changes off the edges, he was successful. But if he missed location, he got hammered. There was no swing and miss generated by the quality of the pitch itself but only through the context of count, location and sequence.

If Stone stood out there and said, I’m going to throw a fastball, guys will put it in the seats every time. Where Hicks is out there saying here comes the sinker and we’ll kind of all see where it goes together.

So to finish the thought, the league has a way of swinging back and forth. In an ecosystem where most pitchers are controling the zone and they all go to driveline and their pitches are consistant and shaped the same way each time, does that environment create space for the ols cliche of effectively wild to creep back in? Luis Gil actually reminds me of Hicks. Mize showed some effectively wild in the spring too. Padres bringing back the knuckleball too. Just wonder if the funkiness, guys with some weird are a thing. when hitters are programmed to hit the driveline robots, does the Imanaga funky hesitation play that much better. Dunno. Just a thought.

Hope you don’t mind if I ramble on your page here for a minute. I watched some interesting baseball yesterday.

Jordan Hicks went 5 no hit one walk ten strike outs against the A’s opening day line up.

Ok so it’s the A’s and not a real game game, but, it was the way he did it. The sinker was not about the velo. He mostly sat 94. He humped it up to 99 once or twice. But the sinker was so unpredictable. The velo bounced around. Never really the same pitch twice.

I described it to the FCL guys last night as he had control but not command. He couldn’t put it exactly where he wanted so the catcher set up right down the middle and he just let it fly and just often enough it was somewhere in the zone, sort of by chance. The unpredictability of the flight of the ball made it so that even if he ended up middle middle guys missed it.

And once he got ahead or to even in the count, you could foget about it. The “stuff” came out. Stupid slider, ridiculous splitter. Rarely strikes, impossible to lay off.
