Sometimes you record a podcast and you’re so aroused by your subject that you need to take a shower after recording. Not saying I have to, specifically, but the collective we. This week on the Prospect Podcast we just so happen to have one of those arousing topics. No, we did not invite Lisa Ann onto the show. Instead, Lance and myself dig into the very exciting Oakland Athletics farm system. We talk all the top talents from Jorge Mateo, to A.J. Puk, Franklin Barreto, and all the top names soon to hit Oakland. Ralph/Lance- How do you guys feel about Nicky Lopez? Is he a top 200 guy?

    Great podcast. Lance is getting better all the time; Ralph is the King of course.

      @Randy: Lance is the man.

      I don’t think so, I peg Lopez for a utility guy.

        @Ralph Lifshitz:
        Appreciate it, Randy!

        I’m probably higher on Nicky than Ralph, I’d have him inside top 200 if I were to put together a list.

        The risk is utility though, as Ralph says.

    Ralph, have you ever listened to the FWO guys on Fantrax?

    They are funny as shit, but really know their stuff. I think they are great, my 2nd favorite on Fantrax after your show.

    I love the lead into Mateo, “hungry for steals?”! Nice transition from breakfast food to fantasy sugar!

    Lance convinced me to wait on moving Barreto. Let’s hope he’s right about the hit tool!

    In my big rebuild I have lots of prospects, but I want more! Currently I have: Senzel, Royce Lewis, Jo Adell, Meadows, Chavis, Heliot Ramos, Brent Rooker, Tristen Lutz, Julio Pablo, and Pratto. Plus, for pitching: Gore, Baez, Crouse, and Faedo.

    I have room to add Jesus Sanchez and Brandon Marsh, but where I’m stuck is I want Jahmai Jones and Soroka.

    Grabbing Marsh would make Julio Pablo droppable due to better upside?

    Also, do you consider the upside of Rooker worth holding for now or is he at 66 due to a faster path?

    • Ralph Lifshitz

      Ralph Lifshitz says:

      @Sport: I’d add Sanchez and Soroka and dump Crouse for Marsh.

    Hey Ralph,
    Need some advice trying to pick 4 of these keepers. 8 team league, H2H. We have round movement so here are my top options.

    Lindor in the 12th
    Yellich in the 13th
    Devers in the 20th
    A.Wood in the 19th
    Hosmer in the 17th
    Keuchel in the 11th
    Rivero in the 20th

    I’m leaning Hosmer over Wood as my 4th, but kind of want to keep an SP. Thoughts?

    • Lance

      Lance says:
      (link)

      @Skillz:
      I’d go Lindor/Yelly/Devers – duh.

      And Hosmer over Wood.

      Somebody mentions below that Rivero in the 20th is nice, which I agree with, but only if you’re win-now, which given your first three keepers, is probably a yes.

      Even with how good Rivero looked last year, he’s a closer, you’ve been warned.

      I kind of talked myself out of my initial point…… dammit

    Ralph,

    I got my MLB and Prospect draft tomorrow night and I was hoping for some advice on my prospect selections.

    MLB Hitter Keepers: Posey, Goldy, Rizzo, Moncada, Seager, Correa, Bryant, J Turner, Trout, Benintendi, Braun, and Happ

    MLB Pitcher Keepers: Verlander, Keuchel, and Salazar

    Prospect Keepers: Acuna, Senzel, Kopech, Honeywell, Tucker, Reyes, and Morejon

    Based on my MLB keepers I have been looking to load up on potential aces this off-season with my prospects. I have picks #2 and #4 in the prospect draft and have been debating on whether to take MacKenzie Gore or Royce Lewis with pick #2. Based on projections of who is available if I take Gore I may still have a shot at getting Lewis at #4 but I also follow your style of hitters over pitchers. What are your thoughts based on my current team set-up?

    • Lance

      Lance says:

      @Field of Schemes:
      I don’t tend to look at team construction when picking this high in a FYPD.

      Can’t go wrong with either Gore or Lewis. Gore might be closer to making an impact, if that matters to you.

    I like Rivero in the 20th over Wood or Hosmer.

    Howdy man!!

    H2H points/ weekly league

    Have some roster Q’s:

    1.) drop Jackie Bradley jr who’s on my bench for any of these? Lewis brinson, Carlos Gonzalez, schebler, Jesse winker, Aaron altherr, joc pederson, pillar, Carlos Gomez, eloy Jimenez, or chris Owings who has eligibility at 2b/SS & OF

    2.) hold or drop bench bat josh Harrison who has eligibility 2b & 3b for either Solarte who has eligibility at SS/3b/2b, scooter gennet, zach cozart who’s now on angels, Albert pujuls , Addison Russell, nick senzel- worth a stash or will not be up for awhile? Lucas Duda (1b/DH), Wilmer Flores who has eligibility at 1b &3b.

    3.) if you recommend in keeping josh Harrison what about dropping my 1b on my bench Brandon belt for any of the above names?
    — my 1b is will Myers who may gain OF eligibility if hosmer is every day 1b. Speaking of hosmer he’s my IF slot

    4.) what to make of Ohtani, I’m contemplating dropping him I will never start him as a bat but espn has him on my bench in battter & bench under pitchers too. I’d be looking at Patrick Corbin.

      @Oscar the grouch:
      Assuming redraft…
      1) In a points league, Winker is going be nice with his discipline. Just gotta hope that Reds OF situation doesn’t limit his playing time.

      2) Scooter Cozart Harrison all close for me. I believe in Cozart’s BB uptick, would probably lean with him and see where he is hitting in the Halos’ lineup early on. Scooter easily as rosterable.

      3) Belt is fine.

      4) Hard for me to believe Ohtani is your worst pitcher. Corbin is an easy add for me, love him this year. Gotta have another scrub you can cut (at least I’m hoping).

        @Lance:

        Thanks Lance!

        Here’s my SP’s I’m waiting for bumgarner to officially be on DL so I can add him to DL so I can add a pitcher without dropping anyone .

        SP: bumgarner (soon to be DL)
        SP darvish
        SP keuchel
        SP berrios
        SP McCullers
        SP Jon gray

        Bench: Ohtani (SP & DH), Blake snell & Jameson taillon.

        We have 4 DL slots

          @Oscar the grouch:

          Yes redraft but can keep max two , I’m already planning keeping Bryce Harper & Carlos correa for 2019

            @Oscar the grouch:
            Yeah, tough to own Corbin there unfortunately. I still want Ohtani.

            Nice staff regardless, you can afford to miss out on Corbin if he does what I think he can.

    Higher upside for this year? Winker, Fisher, Hays, Senzel, Andujar, or Rogers?

    • Lance

      Lance says:

      @Sport:
      Pure upside, I’ll go Senzel.

      But I’d probably roster Winker over anybody here.

  11. Luke says:

    Ralph/Lance,

    A guy in my league is looking to move Edwin Diaz, his only closer. Would you consider trading Luke Weaver for him?

    Here’s my current pitching situation:

    Aaron Nola
    Alex Wood
    Jose Berrios
    Weaver
    Jon Gray
    Shoemaker
    Musgrove
    Junis
    Buehler
    Edwards Jr.

    Closers are Felipe Rivero and Cody Allen.

    It may not seem like I need another closer, but other than the guy with Diaz, I’m the only one in the league with 2 closers or less. Would you make the trade or hold weaver and wait to try and grab a closer on waivers when one inevitably emerges? Thanks a lot!

    • Lance

      Lance says:
      (link)

      @Luke:
      Wouldn’t be too concerned with the “only 2 closers or less.” That wouldn’t drive my decision. You have 2 of the top 10, that’s better than 3 of the top 15-30.

      The chance to upgrade to 3 of the top 10 would be big for me, even though I like Weaver.

      Lot of variables in play for me to make this decision (strategy, format, etc etc). In my ranks, I have Diaz above Weaver, so I will simply abide by that instead of asking 10 questions.

  12. Luke says:

    Lance,

    It’s a 12 team 5×5 H2H league. W SV K ERA WHIP.

    You make some solid points here. I think my staff would take a hit, but you’re right, having 3 of the top 10 closers may be too good to pass up. Thanks for the advice.
