Graduated from Prospect News: Stash List Volume 8: Winn At All Costs: Sal Frelick
1. Orioles OF Heston Kjerstad | 24 | AAA
Tough time of year for the stash list. I run out of things to say about the guys who’ve been left on the farm. Feel pretty negative in most of the blurbs, but it doesn’t make sense to me that guys like Heston Kjerstad are still in the minors, but here he is, and I’m not even sure I can recommend him as a redraft stash. You might be better off picking up a mediocre hitter who’s hot in the majors now. And while that’s always the proposition of a stash list to a certain extent, the board tilts significantly late in the season as the 2024 incentives of suppressing a player’s timeline grow closer. If roster spots aren’t a key concern, then by all means scoop these top two.
2. Red Sox SS Ceddanne Rafaela | AAA
The Ninja Turtles movie is a hit, and Rafaela is hitting everything out of the park in Triple-A. Sure, the 4.5 percent walk rate is scary, but the guy is slashing .317/.363/.662 with 12 homers in 35 games. He turns 23 in September. I think it’s hard to learn patience when you’re hitting .300 with a homerun every third game.
3. Brewers LHP Robert Gasser | 24 | AAA
Gasser’s been hot for the past few months, posting a 3.01 ERA and 1.10 WHIP over his last 12 starts at Triple-A. His 23.7 percent K-BB rate tells the tale of an off-speed specialist learning to get the most out of his diverse arsenal, a Milwaukee developmental specialty.
4. Rays LHP Jacob Lopez | 25 | AAA
The Rays adding Aaron Civale at the trade deadline might cut off Lopez’s path for the time being, and with Taj Bradley ahead of him in the promotion pecking order, Lopez might be stuck in Durham until 2024.
5. Mets 3B Ronny Mauricio | 22 | AAA
Feels like I’m really trying to read tea leaves on this one, by which I mean I’m looking at a used up clump of moist gunk and wondering what it means for Ronny Mauricio. I think the gunk is telling me Mauricio will be up come September.
6. Cardinals SS Masyn Winn | 21 | AAA
Feels like the team kinda missed its window because Winn’s hurt now. Growing up a Cubs fan and watching the Cardinals dominate for years, it’s surprising to see them slumping on an organizational level.
7. Royals OF Tyler Gentry | 24 | AAA
Finally in rhythm after a treacherous start, Gentry’s slashing .404/.517/.681 with three home runs over his last 14 games. September, here we come!
8. Tigers 3B Justyn-Henry Malloy | 24 | AAA
9. Tigers OF Parker Meadows | 23 | AAA
Shrug emoji Detroit has been so confusing to me this season, but that’s life in the AL Central.
10. Tigers 3B Colt Keith | 21 | AAA
He hasn’t been dominant in Triple-A, and he’d probably have to be at least that to convince the Tigers to bump him up this season, given the way they’ve handled Justyn-Henry Malloy and Parker Meadows.
11. Marlins 1B Troy Johnston | 26 | AAA
Old for his level through little fault of his own, Johnston is slashing .419/.471/.758 with four homers in his 15 Triple-A games and would likely be up next week if the Marlins hadn’t added bats at the deadline.
12. Blue Jays LHP Ricky Tiedemann | 20 | AA
Tiedemann inherits the spot that once belonged to Andrew Painter, reserved for a supremely gifted pitcher who could impact the playoff race if he gets fully healthy. Got his clock cleaned (3 ER in 0.1 inning) in his return to Double-A after missing much of the season but looked good in short Low-A stints on the way back.
13. Mets OF Carlos Cortes | 27 | AAA
Mostly a playing time angle recommending the 5’7” explorer, but Cortes has been stating his case, slashing .367/.480/.633 with four home runs in his last 17 games.
14. Mariners SS Ryan Bliss | 23 | AAA
I think a hot week or two would be enough to get him a look, and he’s got multiple hits in three of his last five games.
15. Brewers 3B Patrick Dorrian | 27 | AAA
Dorrian’s had my attention before during hot streaks of summers gone by. Probably won’t get the call, but he’s slugging .780 with seven home runs in his last 16 games.
Thanks for reading!
