Title aside, this is no Jedi mind trick. Or is it? I’ve spent all week, well the last several to be honest, working on a more reliable (and reproducible) set of generic point leagues rankings. When I say “generic” that’s because they don’t allow you to define your league’s scoring system in order to generate rankings specific to your league. Like how I do with my preseason spreadsheet. I’d love to provide you with that, but I just don’t have the time. I’m envisioning a web app that makes this easy, but that would probably be a 2022 thing. In the meantime, these rankings should give you a solid overall comparison of the players (hitters).
I’ve used the following scoring system as the basis for today’s rankings.
RUN (+1), RBI (+1), 1B (+1), 2B (+2), 3B (+3), HR (+4), BB (+1), KO (-1), HBP (+1), SB (+2), CS (-1), SF (+1)
The way I see it, there are two types of rankings. Scratch that, there are three. Current rankings which I commonly refer to as year-to-date (YTD) rankings. These indicate a player’s current value based on what they’ve done so far. Next is a player’s future value. This one I call rest-of-season (ROS) rankings. What is a player’s value moving forward. I know I said there were three types of rankings, but I’m changing my mind. Wait, I’m changing my mind again. The third type of would be position-adjusted that allows you to more accurately compare players across positions which would account for position scarcity. That is a project for another day. Just don’t hold your breath.
I’m gonna go out on a short limb here and say that the most valuable set of rankings are the ROS rankings. This will allow you make the best decisions moving forward. Who to keep. Who to drop. Who to trade. The problem is, like projections, these are the toughest to calculate. My formula factors in a combination of preseason projections, YTD performance and the previous rankings. The specific percentage of each is as much of a secret as the Colonel’s Secret Recipe. In fact, moving forward I’m going to try out the name Colonel malamoney. Make that Colonel malamoney Jr.
Here are my YTD rankings. As you can see, my fantasy baseball crush Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is the top ranked hitter in points leagues. Speaking of Vlad, is it wrong that it annoys me that there is a player name Vladimir Guitierrez? Every time I start reading his name I think I’m about to get a Vlad update, but then Guerrero turns into Guitierrez and I curse at my computer. Guerrero Jr. is proving to the world that he is as special a talent as he was promised to be. If I’m being honest, however, I really think that Fernando Tatis Jr. is the actual top ranked player given he’s third on this list and he’s missed 18 of the Padres games. Vlad and Ronald Acuna Jr. have played 14 and 10 more games respectively than FTJ.

Here are the ROS rankings. Unsurprisingly Tatis Jr. owns the top spot. He’s just been that good. Heck, he’s been better than that. To clarify, the ROS column represents the number of fantasy points I project each player to get between now and the end of the season. The top of this list pretty much reads like a who’s who in baseball.

You’re probably not going to believe this, but I got a direct message from Ken Griffey Jr. telling me that he really appreciates the attention to players with Jr. in their name. He was the first to popularize the Jr. part. I was pretty pumped that he reached out considering The Kid is my second favorite player of all time, after Big Dave Winfield.
