I wrote this Daniel Norris sleeper post at the same time I wrote my Carlos Rodon sleeper, because they’re similar, and not because they were born within a year of each other about 22 years ago.  Geez, 22 years ago, I could be Norris’s absentee daddy.  *checks Norris’s player profile picture for a mustache*  Nope, he ain’t mine!  Rodon touches 98 MPH while Norris touches 95.  Rodon has three pitches, while Norris has four pitches.  Rodon lives in a house, Norris lives in a VW van parked in a Target parking lot.  Hold on one second, what again were their similarities?  Oh, yeah, they can’t command their pitches.  Well, couldn’t up until last year.  In Triple-A last year, Norris threw 90 2/3 IP with a 4.1 BB/9.  In the majors thru 60 IP, he had a 2.9 BB/9.  Another thing that’s similar is both guys should reach around (not that kind of reach around) 180 innings this year and both could go over 9 K/9.  Now, whether it’s due to Rodon playing in college while Norris went straight to the minors out of high school, Rodon feels more polished.  That’s not to say he’s more like A.J. Pollock; wrong polished.  That polished is with cabbage.  As in, my babcha would Polish our forks with cabbage.  Now, Norris still makes the nethers attentive on a pure upside scale, so don’t let the “He’s not as good as Rodon” get you down.  He’s in Motown.  When a prostitute trips, a pimp yells hoedown.  And now I’ve painted myself into a limerick corner.  Anyway, what can we expect from Daniel Norris for 2016 fantasy baseball and what makes him a sleeper?

In Single-A, Norris led all of the minors in K/9.  In Triple-A, he had a 15.1 K/9.  That was all in 2014.  In 2015, shizz went a little pear-shaped with a 7.7 K/9 in Triple-A and 6.8 in the majors.  I don’t think he was exposed as not as good as his earlier minor league numbers indicated.  I think he got to Triple-A and the majors and he tried to figure out how to pitch rather than just blow hitters away.  You know what comes next?  Learning how to pitch while blowing away hitters.  Backing up this hypothesis is his walk rate in the majors last year was his best BB/9 since High-A.  Someone likely said to him, “15 K/9 is as sexy as that whipped cream scene in Varsity Blues, but you can’t be effective and have a 5 BB/9,” so he fixed something.  That quote likely involved chewing tobacco or Big League Chew, because all baseball scenes involve one or the other.  I doubt he can’t figure out how to command his pitches while also striking out hitters.  It’ll come.  When?  Well… He’s a sleeper, because he’ll likely be drafted late since he appears to be a year away, and, sadly, he might not just appear to be a year away, but he might actually be a year away, though he might appear to be a year away and not be a year away.  I’m the Grand Champion of putting “year away” in one sentence, by the way.  Norris is a pure upside play.  He could be a 4+ ERA guy that bounces between the rotation, the bullpen and the minors or a 2.75 ERA guy with truckloads of Ks.  I’m guessing for this year, we’re gonna get a little bit of all of those scenarios from month to month.  For 2016, I’ll give him the projections of 9-11/3.67/1.22/155 in 180 IP.

I agree that he’s probably at least a year away but with him and Stroman it looks like big things are coming for the BJs.
Need help in a 12-team 8-keeper 6×6 (R, HR, RBI, SB, OBP, SLG, ERA, WHIP, K/9, QS, IP, SV+HLD) league. I’m set on keeping:
    AuShiz
    Starling Marte
    Carlos Gomez
    J Upton
    Matt Carpenter
    Arrieta
    McCullers

For my final spot I’m considering:
    Craig Kimbrel
    Big Papi
    Ian Desmond
    Wade Davis
    Liriano
    T. Ross

You think Kimbrel is the smart choice in a SV+HLD league? Anything you’d change?
    Thanks!

8 team keeper with 14 keepers
R, HR, RBI, AVG, OBP, NSB
    L, ERA, WHIP, K/9, QS, SV+H

    got myself to many keepers
Jose Abreu, Bautista, Betts. Brantley, Cano, Chris Davis, Frazier, Marte, Rendon, Schwarber
    Bumgarner, Wade Davis, Kluber, Scherzer

those are the 14 i wanna keep but still have guys who should be kept like
Dozier, Fielder, hector olivera? Jose Reyes, Devon Travis, Yelich, Carlos Martinez and Jordan Zimmermann

would love to hear what you think, guessing i should trade a few guys away to get a keeper shortstop?

    thanks pal!

It’s interesting that you named Franco because I actually think he’s legit. He doesn’t strike out much, has power, plays in a band box, and showed he could hit last year. Meanwhile, Rendon scares me with that injury history. Schwarber and Xander are trending up too

Looking for anyone interested in taking over a team in a forever keeper league. 10 teams, 5 X 5 roto. NO DRAFT this year.

I MIGHT HAVE ‘TWO’ OPENINGS, WILL KNOW MORE IN THE NEXT DAY OR SO….

This league is played on FANTRAX.

    email me here, if interested:

    • Five-On-One says:
      (link)

@Malicious Phenom: So, MP, I’ve gotta ask. I’ve seen you post similar a question every day for the past week or two. Did you just start a league and are now looking to fill the spots one at a time? Or are the participants in your league dropping one-by-one each day? Or, most plausibly, do you get one or two takers, then they get a look at the team you want them to take over and quickly bail?

      • goodfold2 says:
        (link)

@Five-On-One: exactly, it’s why he should just SHOW the damn team(s)/settings here, he’s somehow thinking not showing this saves him time, when it’s the exact opposite. Also, in doing this it’s quite likely he’s making it seem like he doesn’t have the effort to get this done right (when i know that’s not the case since he still shows up and posts every day) to prospective leaguemates.

Nobody finds it fun to have 3-4 email back and forths to find out just what they are joining, and that takes a lot longer too. This isn’t selling a barely working footbath machine on craigslist, you should WANT your “buyers” to know what they are getting into.

      • Malicious Phenom says:
        (link)

@Five-On-One: These two potential teams are not available yet, they are owners from last year, who I have not heard a peep from in awhile… Just want to make sure they are out before I POST (goodfold2) their teams, for new owners..

        • goodfold2 says:
          (link)

@Malicious Phenom: so you are showing openings that aren’t even openings yet, and not showing rosters of those possible openings helps you or those who might be interested how? are you sure it’s not just to save yourself the few minutes of typing the rosters in? If somebody says they might want in, what happens later when you do have to send the rosters and/or league settings and the interest dries up? you’ll have wasted yours and the interested parties time, that’s what, all to save 3 minutes once. This 3 minutes ends up costing you dozens later, not to mention the other people involved. Showing all relevant info would likely weed out some people that would’ve not wanted in after knowing everything later, while also having the bonus of saving yourself and other people time now.

    • goodfold2 says:
      (link)

@Malicious Phenom: didn’t you JUST say this was filled and you were hoping it wouldn’t need more people for a long long time? and still no rosters eh, good show. maybe these guys that say they join learn something about settings or roster after they claim they want in and then don’t want in. That whole incomplete information thing till after the fact, but you know how to remedy that (hint it would only take an extra 3 minutes)…..
make that info complete BEFORE the fact.

In a 5×5 roto keeper league, my keeper roster is pretty set except for my last slot.

    14 I’m keeping;
Rizzo, Wong, Machado, Arenado, Franco, Harper, Springer, Marte, Greinke, Gray, Lester, Rodon, Melancon, and Giles.

My options for the last spot are Trea Turner ($5), Byung-Ho Park ($10), or Fr. Rodriguez ($15).

I know the Nats signed a couple place holders, but is Trea worth holding at this price?

Out league is a snake draft where players are assigned salaries based don round drafted, 1st round $17, 2nd $16, etc and then given $5 raises each year, with $245 for 15 players, so Trea is at a bargin price.

I also have thought about offering up a $47 Braun (who is too expensive for me to keep) for a $23 Desmond.

Should I consider the trade and fill in my SS position, or take a flyer on Trea (or Park)?

@Iron Sheik: Raisel all day. Be mindful that the wins may be scretchy this year considering we don’t know who is closing and if anyone who does can actually do the job. Also with the reds in full rebuild mode may be starting two rookie outfielders if Bruce gets moved. On the flip side the k’s and whip will be great and if he can cut down on the long balls shoukd have a mid 3 era

        @J-FOH: This conversation seems familiar…hmmmmm….

Raisel is the guy, check it! After being recalled and re-inserted into the rotation he posted a 28% k rate, a 7% BB rate, and a 53% GB rate.

That’s the makings of a guy I want in all formats. I think he’s going to be the man from April til July, and you’ll want to move him at your deadline before he gets shutdown. He’s going to have a sizable innings jump if he stays healthy, and he’s not the biggest guy, so he could go into hibernation by September.

    • Iron Sheik says:
      (link)

@Iron Sheik: Grey how about some closers on the cheap? Will Smith a good actor but maybe better closer? Capps for Sale? Carter Capps…Steamers likes him a ton…thoughts? It’s guys like this that you can hold out on and snag them late in drafts. Thoughts?

    Grey!

Wow! Have been catching up reading all my e-mails (’cause I didn’t bring my laptop with me when I went stateside). Now I’m catching up with all the sleeper articles. Really fantastic work, man.

On today’s article, all I can say is Elijah Duke’s clown boots. What? Didn’t come out like I thought it would.

It’s kind of early in mock draft season and already some trends are apparent.

    1. Your sleeper picks are supremely sleepy, as in everyone is sleeping on them except those of us who know better not to sleep on sleepers.

    2. CBS rankings are really out of whack, which will also help those of us who show up for the eventual draft because autobot will draft a pitcher with the first ten picks like it does every year.

    3. It is very conceivable that Trout is not the consensus #1 overall pick this year in H2H points AL/NL leagues.

Really loved the Rodon article from yesterday. Your manner of making it really simple is something that I will never forget.

Lastly, wrote a test for a job in Copenhagen (Saturday morning after arriving on Friday from North America, so I was full of jet lag) and Kabul (Sunday morning but yesterday someone drove a truck load of explosives into the UNHCR guest house compound in downtown Kabul killing the lone security guard but no international staff died so doesn’t look probable on me getting that job).

    Cheers,

@Ante GALIC: jesus, you ever stop and think you’re probably like at least 50 more times likely to die in these places than like nearly all other regular razzball folks? not making fun, real pathos here.

What are your thoughts on Parra to the Rockies? Looks like a good fit after a break out season where he started to hit for some power, and lift and pull the ball more. Should have an everyday job with Car-Go probably on the way out.

Grey I have a trade offfer in a dynasty 12 team upto 40 keepers, would you deal Cespedes for Castellanos and Z.Wheeler, I would have Springer, J.Upton and Dickerson in the OF. I also have Machado at 3rd.

      Posey/deGrom

  31. Much like CMart last year, this is a guy I wanna get for about 10 bucks that I use based on matchups and will be a fantastic keeper after the season.

    Howdy Grey,

In the first round of my keeper league draft the best available players to me will be Billy Hamilton, Salazar, and Gomez. I have 6 hitters and one pitcher (Cole) at this point with average speed and good power. Who would you target? 14 team roto. Thanks.

    • Grey

      Grey says:

      Salazar

      It’s fair

  34. Boomer19 says:

With so many outfield sleepers, should you target other positions early and wait? So far early adp has hicks at 284, Santana at 304, deshields at 147, conforto at 183, grichuk at 193, and Peterson at 182. I play in a five outfielder league. I know top corners are important right away, then I am not sure who to target besides best available. Thoughts?

16 team dynasty league trade offer… 5×5 roto league

    His Gattis and Nate Karns
    for
My Joe Ross, Montero, Napoli, Pete O’Brien

This is a 2 catcher league. I would slide Realmuto in for Montero. Would you accept this?

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      Gattis isn’t a catcher

    • Grey

      Grey says:

      Does this matter?

      • Bammers says:
        (link)

        @Grey:

No, I have Posey and Realmuto in my C slots. Gattis only qualifies for the 1 utility spot in our league, so he would have to start there.

        • Grey

          Grey says:

Hey Grey. I checked with Mike on this one but wanted to run it by you too. I’m struggling with it. 16 team dynasty keep 6. My current keepers are Aberu, Soler, Bogaerts, Sonny, Grichuk, Moustakas.
I have 2 offers for Bogaerts.
(1)Arrieta, Confor to and a pick upgrade
(2)Dozier, Rodon or Giolito and a pick upgrade.

Which one or do I hold X? Thanks
