Way back on Tuesday, March 3rd at 9:00pm EST, a gaggle of Razzball Writers (well, most) settled in for an early season draft. Twelve fantasy writers in one league and you thought we weren’t going to take this opportunity to hear ourselves talk (type)? Well, then you thought wrong! We’re all loaded with hot fiyah taeks! Now you know who is in the league, next we’ll hear what they had to say about it. I interviewed each writer with some questions; some personal and some generic and here’s what they had to say:
B_Don:
Q: First pick in the draft is pretty sweet! Did you give any thought to Trout or are you an Acuna guy all the way?
All Acuna, all day. Stolen bases are at a premium, and getting them from a source that doesn’t hurt you in any other categories is difficult to find. The opportunity to get a player that can go 40/40 over a full regular season is too tempting to pass up.
Trout hasn’t gotten any slower since he stole 30 bases, actually his sprint speed last season was higher than it was in 2016, but that’s not his role in the offense anymore. The addition of Rendon and his recent injury history seems to cement that position.
Q: You were a little late getting to the draft and FanTrax had it’s way with your squad drafting 6 pitchers in the first 9 picks, how are you going to handle this?
Yes, I forgot about the draft… I tend to go more pitcher heavy in drafts, but RCLs are a different beast, and the shortened season may reduce the impact of top end pitching even more. With a heavy pitching leaning, I’m going to explore the trade market and attempt to fill 1B and/or CI. Missing those pitcks is tough, but being active in an RCL can be more important than the draft.
Q: Tell us your favorite pick you made and the pick you instantly regretted.
Stanton in the 8th. This was before the season suspension, but it’s a steal now that this injury should be dealt with by then. Seager in the 10th is a nice value as well if he can stay on the field.
Since I showed up late, I’m not sure if there was a pick I regretted. Sale is obviously a tough loss, but this was during the limbo where he was still trying to come back. Other than that, nobody likes drafting Eric Hosmer, but 1B was dry and at least he’s hitting in the middle of the lineup and playing every day.
Q: What did you think was the best overall pick of the draft and biggest reach of the draft?
For best overall pick, I like Miguel Andujar at 239. A potential plus average, 30 HR threat over the course of a full season, and may get multi-eligibility at some point this season.
The biggest reaches were Anthony Rendon and Jonathan Villar. Rendon at 14 seems too early for somebody who isn’t going to contribute in stolen bases. On Villar, I’m skeptical that the power surge we saw was real and he’s moving from Baltimore’s homer haven to Miami’s chasm. Many of those homers from last season are going to be easy outs this year. Plus, Kerry had already taken Trea in the first round, which seems like an over investment early on.
Q: Go ahead and give us a prediction for where you think you’ll finish and who is your pick to win (if not yourself).
I’m winning of course. Other than my team, I like what Mcafeeeee and Truss did in the draft.
Thomas Howland:
Q: I love your start with two arms in the third and fifth rounds, then all offense. You seem pretty high on Bo Bichette there, expecting big things?
Love Bichette’s breakout potential, and at the time of the draft his ADP was drifting higher and higher, had just missed him in the fifth round in an earlier draft. Power/speed/high contact breakout candidate.
Q: Tell us your favorite pick you made and the pick you instantly regretted.
Fave is Michael Brantley in the 9th. I think he’s got a chance to be my number two outfielder. Instant regret is Goldschmidt, was hoping to grab Greinke but he went two picks later.
Q: What did you think was the best overall pick of the draft and biggest reach of the draft?
Best pick Trout, love having him even at number 2 overall. Biggest reach is Bichette despite the talent.
Q: Go ahead and give us a prediction for where you think you’ll finish and who is your pick to win (if not yourself).
If things go right, especially since Snell has time to heal, I really like my team to finish in the top three. The others I like are Butters and McAfee for their offensive balance and lack of questionable pitching at the top.

Will is MIA during quarantine, hope he’s doing OK out there!
Coolwhip:
Q: What do you think we can expect from Jo Adell this year?
Well… prior to this live reenactment of Contagion, I was expecting him to be up relatively quickly towards the end of April, early May at the latest. When Maddon likes a prospect he usually petitions for him to come up pretty quickly. Remember Kris Bryant? The Opening Day 3B that season was Mike Olt, how’d that work out? Similarly, Goodwin is/was likely the Opening Day RF and I doubt he is suddenly above average. After April last year his production dropped significantly.
As for Adell, I was expecting 80-90% Robert expectations at a much cheaper cost with a tick less steals, but now I’m not sure how or when he comes up. In ST he didn’t take a single walk so Maddon wanted him to return to Minors camp. Hopefully he comes up shortly after the shortened season begins as Angels will have less time to make a run, he could still be a difference maker at cost with steals in bunches and some flashy power.
Q: Tell us your favorite pick you made and the pick you instantly regretted.
Favorite pick: Machado in the 5th hands down. It wasn’t that long ago that he was borderline 1st round talent before the public breakup with the Os. And last year before “giving up” he was on fire, May-July he hit .293 22 HR. Well, in the offseason the coaching staff gave him some tough love and he had a come to Jesus moment. Then he showed up to camp like Ben Swolo, claiming it was his time to be Supreme Leader. Color me a believer. A shot at him returning to 35/12/.300 form? Yes please. Now: Still like it for most part, just hope he is staying hungry and in-shape. If so, with the season starting in summer, could see the same summer from 2019.
Regret: Odor, it’s always Odor. I thought I could avoid him this year but he “fell” in this draft and the power/speed lured me in. Also taking Grandal in 9th, bleh, I had Garver in my queue and I clicked the wrong one like an amatuer.
Q: What did you think was the best overall pick of the draft and biggest reach of the draft?
Since this draft started pretty early with Stanton getting injured and no announced timetable, BDon got a steal with him as the rest of us were resisting taking a chance on him. Haha, I struggled with the choice every round since the 4th and I likely would have given in 4 picks later. Biggest reach? Probably Ohtani, in the draft I even commented that I thought I was robust with him as an Angels homer, but he wasn’t on my list until the 8th. COVID19 aside, next year will probably be the best time to own him once he’s fully removed from surgery.
Q: Go ahead and give us a prediction for where you think you’ll finish and who is your pick to win (if not yourself).
I think I have a top 2 offense. Belli, Muncy, Devers, Bogaerts, Machado, Soler is a hell of a core. Power is definitely the theme, in a short season that’ll be huge. Every HR = 1 Run 1 HR 1 RBI at minimum, so that could pile up in a hurry. I like my pitching too as I didn’t have to sacrifice much, so I think I could be top 3 if some things break right, I’m a little concerned about SVs as I punted it more than I planned, and in a short season that could be dangerous. McAfee looks positioned pretty soundly to make another run; His offense is probably my top competition and his bullpen is less shaky than mine.
Butters:
Q: Welcome to the writer’s league! Have you played the RCLs before? You drafted like you knew what you were doing.
Glad to be here, I played in one RCL last season so it wasn’t my first rodeo.
Q: Did you forget saves are a thing?
Short answer, yes.
Long answer, I went in with the plan to not pay for saves (SAGNOF). The way the draft shook out, I either had a guy at another position I liked better or I got sniped. I grabbed Oberg and Pressley hoping that they could take the closer job and run. Unfortunately the delayed and most likely shortened season means there is less chance for injury/ineffectiveness to clear a path for them. I’ll be playing the wire pretty aggressively but I may decide to punt the category if I can’t find a gem early.
Q: Tell us your favorite pick you made and the pick you instantly regretted.
Eugenio Suarez was a pick that had reservations about at the time due to injury concerns but I felt I couldn’t pass up the possible upside. Now that pick is looking like a potential steal since the delayed season gives him time to get right for Opening Day (yay for silver linings). Another pick that may work out better than expected is Zac Gallen. Obviously the upside is immense but it could be capped by an innings limit. Well, now everyone has an innings limit so he should be able to contribute for more of the season.
I didn’t really have an instant regret pick, other than not getting a real closer. I didn’t love Willie Calhoun in the 13th but if he doesn’t pan out it won’t kill me.
Q: What did you think was the best overall pick of the draft and biggest reach of the draft?
I think that Tommy Edman has a real chance to be a difference maker in the 12th. He was one of my late round targets and I was hoping he would fall another round so I could snag him. I guess I should have known better drafting with a group like this.
As for a reach… maybe it’s the Giants fan in me but I am out on Kershaw in the 5th. He hasn’t been the dominant guy we all remember and the injury bug has started to creep in. He could still have a solid season, but there was more upside available.
Q: Go ahead and give us a prediction for where you think you’ll finish and who is your pick to win (if not yourself).
Obviously, I’m in it to win it. I like the power/speed combo I’ve got on offense and I’m hoping that those guys will also manage to hit for average. My big 3 should drive my pitching cats. I gambled on upside, maybe more than one should, but that’s the thrill of fantasy. If I hit on a couple I should be in good shape come championship week. I’m admittedly nervous about my lack of saves but I think I made up for it in the other categories. I’m also a big fan of Coolwhip and mcafeeeee, They both have a good combo of studs and balance. I expect there to be more randomness with the abbreviated season so anything goes.
Hammer:
Q: The middle of the draft is tough this year and I found myself there a lot this draft season and have a ton of Mookie shares, what was your strategy with the middle pick?
I actually love the middle of the draft this year, especially in the top few rounds. WIth a solid top tier of 5 hitters, plus the two big aces, you’re pretty much guaranteed to get a good start to the draft, just take who falls to you. The other benefit, especially in a 12 team league, is you’ve got a decent shot at a great pitcher making it back to you as well (Verlander/Scherzer/Flaherty/etc). Getting Mookie and Verlander in my first two turns gives me a solid base and left me feeling like I didn’t have to chase any particular position or category in the next few rounds, which was the goal.
Q: Tell us your favorite pick you made and the pick you instantly regretted.
Favorite Pick – Dansby Swanson in the 21st round. Swanson is probably my favorite late hitter target this season. He was on an absolute tear in the first half last season before an injury derailed a real breakout year. He clearly wasn’t right when he came back (zero HR after returning from the IL) so you’re getting a huge discount on a guy in a great lineup, who can give you power and little bit of speed, an entrenched playing time situation, and a ton of pedigree. I’ll put him in MI/UT all season and not think twice about it.
Instant Regret – Luis Castillo in the 4th round. This is more to do with looking back and who I took Castillo over vs. Castillo himself. Looking back, I probably would have taken Kershaw or Paddack if given the chance again. I was hoping one of those guys would make it back to me in the 5th so I could solidify my pitching early but the were both gone by the time I picked again.
Q: What did you think was the best overall pick of the draft and biggest reach of the draft?
It’s hard to pinpoint exactly given so much has changed with the delays in the start of the season and injuries we didn’t know about at the time so I’ll try to disqualify those picks.
I love Kris Bryant in the 5th round to Richardo. I think the pendulum has swung too far in the negative direction with Bryant. The guy is going to hit leadoff or second in a very good lineup. He’s still got all the tools that made him a top prospect and MVP. Sure, the HRs aren’t likely to come back to the 2016 levels, but he’s going to be elite in runs, while providing above average numbers in HR/RBI/AVG. I like him over guys like Machado and Vlad Jr. that went before him.
For reach, I’ll sort of continue above and pick on Vlad Jr. again. I get it. He’s the shiny toy, and if he puts it together he could have a monster season, I’m just hesitant at the price. I already mentioned I prefer Bryant at 3B and if you wanted to get in on a young TOR star, I’d rather have Bo Bichette who went 5 picks later. Going even as far down as Matt Chapman, who I took in the 9th round, you’re looking at comparable and safer production at the position. It’s just a lot of risk at a critical point in the draft.
Q: Go ahead and give us a prediction for where you think you’ll finish and who is your pick to win (if not yourself).
I felt like I was chasing pitching the whole draft so I’m not in love with my staff. There’s upside guys in there like Kluber and Urias, plus a late pick in Mike Minor who I’ve got tons of shares of, but I need things to break the right way. I’m also light in saves, especially if the Rays mess around with Nick Anderson like I suspect they might. I think I’ll be in the top 4, mostly carried by my hitting with a better chance to contend if I can manage the waiver wire well for some arms.
I really like what Butters did. His team is loaded everywhere. If I were him, I’d just punt saves and try to take down the league that way. He certainly has the roster to do it if a couple of his hitters project at the higher end of their ranges.
SON:
Q: No pitcher until the sixth round, man after my own heart! You think your pitching can hold up?
I’m just trying to emulate the best! I feel good about my pitching. If my targets don’t perform up to expectations, I don’t have a problem streaming.
Q: Tell us your favorite pick you made and the pick you instantly regretted.
I don’t really have a favorite pick. I was just going with the flow and trying to remain as balanced as possible. I didn’t regret any pick, but I wasn’t super excited about Vlad in the fifth. He was there and I wanted one share of him this year.
Q: What did you think was the best overall pick of the draft and biggest reach of the draft?
I like Paul DeJong in the 17th round. He’s going to hit cleanup for the Cards and 25/5 with 30/10 in the range of outcomes is kind of juicy. Luis Robert was the biggest reach. I get the power/speed combo is alluring, but there’s a lot of swing and miss in his game. That’s not a death sentence by any means, but I can see some struggles his first time in the bigs.
Q: Go ahead and give us a prediction for where you think you’ll finish and who is your pick to win (if not yourself).
I’ll give myself a top 5 prediction. As for who will win it all, I must always adhere to Truss and Mcafeeeee, the defending champ.
MattTruss:
Q: You know there are only 5 outfield spots right?
Yea, I got a little carried away there and probably should have sprung for a Corner Infielder at some point instead. What can I say, I want to draft 9 OFs on every team. I have a lot of RPs right now as we wait and see and can easily drop one to open up a streaming spot, as is the plan. There will likely be a lot of streaming hitters in whatever funky version of a season we end up with.
Q: Are you sure your pitching staff of….Patrick Corbin will hold up?
I’m actually pretty high on E-Rod too, but admit the staff is a little thin. Maeda and Heaney could be big though too and again, there will be lots of streaming with the short season I think.
Q: Tell us your favorite pick you made and the pick you instantly regretted.
Favorite: Probably Luis Robert, I’m excited to see what the kid’s got in the majors. Instant Regret: Puig, in hindsight I should have grabbed a corner man here and probably still could have gotten Puig later.
Q: What did you think was the best overall pick of the draft and biggest reach of the draft?
Best: With the benefit of hindsight, Stanton in the 8th is pretty sweet but I also love Richardo’s grab of Kopech in the 24th, he slipped off my radar and I regret it. I also got double sniped on Chapman and Woodruff in the 7th, would have loved to get either one of those over Benintendi there. Reach: Ohtani in the 5th seems a little reachy, but nothing else really pops out too much.
Q: Go ahead and give us a prediction for where you think you’ll finish and who is your pick to win (if not yourself).
Honestly, there is so much unpredictability this season. With it shortened I feel like luck is going to play a much bigger factor. If you drafted the right guys that get hot at the right time, you’ll have a big advantage and not as much time to level out. I’m going to be quicker to drop players, I know that much. It’s going to be crazy but I’m gunning for that top spot as always.
Richardo:
Q: Cole, Bregman, Gleyber, Blackmon, Bryant, LeMahieu and Gary Sanchez. That’s a pitcher in the first round, four of Grey’s 2020 schmohawks and a top catcher…are you drafting straight from the Anti-Grey manifesto or what?
Oh wow, the first question is “do I not respect the guy who signs my paychecks?“ To quote the great Pee-Wee Herman, “You don’t wanna get mixed up with a guy like me. I’m a loner, Dottie. A rebel.” Honestly, I was surprised when Cole made it to me at pick 9, so I changed up my strategy and took my stud first and then rattled off 9 straight hitters. And while I’ll never disparage the great name of Grey, I’m a fan of all of those bats. I was planning on filling 2B in the third-round and Albies and Marte going right before my pick put me on the clock deciding between Altuve and Gleyber. I chose to take the position flexibility with Torres. In fact, four of those nine batters I took have multi-position eligibility.
Q: Tell us your favorite pick you made and the pick you instantly regretted.
I’ve fallen hard for Nick Castellanos this year. Getting out of Detroit was a game-changer and the bombs should keep on coming in Cincinnati. I have mild regrets about taking Rhys Hoskins, not because I don’t like the value in Round 10, but because at the time I thought I could wait on my first closer. At the time, Taylor Rogers, Edwin Diaz, Brad Hand, and Ken Giles were all still on the board…..until the run. I ended up with Craig Kimbrel in the 11th, but I should’ve taken Rogers while I had the chance.
Q: What did you think was the best overall pick of the draft and biggest reach of the draft?
At the time, Justin Upton in the 21st round was an absolute steal. Now that we have the delay, Alex Verdugo in the 20th round looks like a great value. I’m all about Eloy Jimenez in the 80-100 range, but as pick 44 that’s way too rich for my blood. I think you’re paying for the ceiling at that price.

MattTruss dominates every league I’m in with him, so he’s my pick to win it all. Real talk – I didn’t even look at his roster. I just pray to the fantasy gods that we have baseball. I’ll even tank this league if it means we get baseball.
Kerry Klug:
Q: Drafting early can often bite us in the butt, do you think you can piece enough pitching together now that Syndergaard is done for the season?
He’s WHAT?! Yea, my 20/20 hindsight is now telling me maybe I should’nt have gotten cute and drafted the two top closers back-to-back in the 5th and 6th rounds. I need a Cy Young performance from Walker Buehler, minor ratio steps forward from Robbie Ray and Madison Bumgarner and then huge breakouts from Yonny Chirinos, Ross Stripling and — does that say Spencer Turnbull?! I’m screwed.
Q: Projections have you running away with stolen bases, was this a draft strategy for you or something you just fell into?
In the land of the homerun, the man with stolen bases is king. My stolen base strategy just seemed to keep falling to me. I took Turner with the 10th overall pick and was hoping to wait on speed, but then — lo and behold — there was Starling Marte sitting there for me at pick 34 and Jonathan Villar at pick 39. I still think I have some power sleepers in Franmil Reyes, CJ Cron — and I even think Nomar Mazara in his (and my) wildest dreams could finally top 25-30 HRs.
Q: Tell us your favorite pick you made and the pick you instantly regretted.
Favorite: Avisail Garcia in the 19th round. Did we all forget Garcia went 20/10/.282 in 489 ABs last year? Now he’s in Milwaukee with a better lineup around him and a better stadium. Why not 30/15 (in a full season of course!)
Regrets: Tommy Edman in the 12th. I panicked because the third base pool was thinning — but I could’ve waited even longer and took a definite full timer in Justin Turner who went 2 rounds later
Q: What did you think was the best overall pick of the draft and biggest reach of the draft?
Best Overall pick: Dansby Swanson in the 21st round by Hammer. I think if he returns to his pre-injury form we saw in 2019 he’s an MVP candidate. MARK MY WORDS!
Biggest Reach: Also Hammer! Whit Merrifield in the 5th. The stolen base drop from 45 to 20 is shocking — but he is over 30 now. Does it continue to fall? I think he could end up 15/15 and disappointing.
Q: Go ahead and give us a prediction for where you think you’ll finish and who is your pick to win (if not yourself).
Well I screwed the pooch with my starting pitching so I’ll be battling for the last playoff spot. As with all of these guys though — a few of these sleepers awaken and I’m in the money baby!
I’m liking Pat’s team from what I see so far. He’s got a good pitching/hitting balance at the top — I like his SP1 and SP2 in deGrom and Nola.
Pat:
Q: I love Ohtani in the daily format, what do you think we can expect from him with the shortened season?
Ohtani was simply mispriced during draft season for daily formats. The ability in a full season to contribute 100+ almost elite innings and a 20/10 floor with a good batting average out of a single roster spot is incredibly unique. The additional recovery time because of the suspended season is only increasing that value without him missing 2-3 games a week on a plane going to Salt Lake City in April/May. Coming off Tommy John I don’t expect the pitching side of the equation to be full 2018, but I think a 3.75 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and 9+ K/9 is still a realistic projection. It’s hard to give a hitting side projection currently, but he will be a set it and forget it option every day he hits.
Q: Tell us your favorite pick you made and the pick you instantly regretted.
Ohtani was my favorite pick. I think he could be a 1st round selection in daily leagues in 2021. That said, Tim Anderson was an important piece. I was lagging stolen bases at that point and while I don’t think he will hit .300 ever again he doesn’t hurt my batting average, which I believe will be a clear team strength throughout the year. Love his lineup and consistent production. The pick I regretted was Aaron Nola. I don’t mind Nola, but I never go pitcher early so when I selected DeGrom it threw off my normal draft capital allocation. As I look back on the draft if I would’ve taken Donaldson/Sonny Gray over Nola/Ozuna.
Q: What did you think was the best overall pick of the draft and biggest reach of the draft?
Austin Meadows after pick 50 is a crime. That is the best pick of the draft. Josh Hader in the 5th is my biggest reach in a daily league. The ability with no waivers to pick saves off the wire make the draft day expenditure on premium closers a little hazier, but my true problem is that the Brewers don’t even want Hader closing. If he doesn’t get all of the save opportunities I think it will be hard to return value there.
Q: Go ahead and give us a prediction for where you think you’ll finish and who is your pick to win (if not yourself).
I’ll say 3rd. I hit most of my statistical landmarks but am lagging a little in some of the offensive categories. This league will be scrappy so snatching up premium streams for runs and RBIs won’t be as easy as normal. I really like Son’s team. I’m not a huge fan of Ozzie Albies in the 3rd round, but the offensive buildout in the first 5 rounds is quite a base. I’m a fan of his SP2-4 and if Chuck Morton can provide elite numbers for one more year he will be tough to beat.
Mcafeeeee:
Q: The defending champion back in the house! What is your plan for defending your title?
I limped to 1st place last year with my 3B trio of Arenado, Rendon, and Devers. I’m running it back with three 3B in the first five rounds including Nolan, who nobody seems to like this season (I took him at #20 in my TGFBI league). I’m a little worried his AVG is going to suffer from the shortened season, conversely I think having Mondesi or any other top end SB guy will be a massive advantage over teams that punted steals.
Q: Tell us your favorite pick you made and the pick you instantly regretted.
This is where I tell you I didn’t love any of my picks, being at the turn I felt like I was often taking the best players available because my queue was empty. I normally punt saves, but with the delay I’m happy to have Hendriks and Jansen as my top closers.
I regretted the Encarnacion pick, I should’ve clicked Max Fried, Gallen or Eduardo Rodriguez there and continued to wait on a 1B like Cron or Chavis, whom I took five rounds later and will be my starter when Edwin hurts his shoulder carrying his parrot after his first dong.
Q: What did you think was the best overall pick of the draft and biggest reach of the draft?
I liked a lot of SP that went late: Maeda, Musgrove, and Michael Talbert Kopech. Labeling a reach is very subjective, but I’ll indulge with Realmuto and Sanchez in the 6th and 7th rounds. In a 12 team one Catcher league you’re passing up some talented bats there for a position that can be filled later. Pat landed Wilson Contreras in the 15th…
Q: Go ahead and give us a prediction for where you think you’ll finish and who is your pick to win (if not yourself).
I’ll compete with this boring balanced team, but chaos will ensue with whatever type of season we end up having. No matter the number of games, Son’s team looks very stacked.
Finally, I thought it would be a fun exercise to see who our resident experts, Grey and Rudy would pick to win the league. This obviously doesn’t take into account in-season management, trades or anything besides the draft really. Still I thought it would be a fun thing to look at. Based on the draft here are Grey and Rudy’s projections (or point shares) for each team and their corresponding roto points from Pre-COVID stats:

Well, there you have it, it appears Pat is running away with this thing, no matter who you ask! According to Grey, Thom and Coolwhip land on the podium while myself and B_Don take the honors in Rudy’s rankings. Of course, this is really all a crap shoot with a shortened season, so who really knows. I just can’t wait for something to get going!
