Rumors are swirling that the Mets are looking to trade Thor himself, and sign Zack Wheeler to a long term deal instead. Another 2009 draft pick, however, may have something to do with that as well. Steven Matz had fallen out of favor the first couple months of the season. But he’s turned it around in July, particularly since he’s been back in the starting rotation. He has a 3.27 ERA this month, and a 2.54 ERA at home, where he pitches today against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates hit a measly .211, with a .566 OPS, against Matz over 38 at bats. Justin Turner, 3B: $3,700 – Turner has a .366 ISO the past two weeks, and his team is projected to have the highest runs scored today in Washington.
Mookie Betts, OF: $4,300 – Three home runs yesterday in a 4-5 effort, .375 ISO the past two weeks. He’s also facing crafty lefty C.C. Sabathia, who baffles younger hitters, but Mookie sees him well: .387/.958 against.
Mike Trout, OF: $5,000 – When is a player worth almost as much as the cheapest starting pitcher? When he’s the best player in the league playing at his peak this year.
Joc Pederson, OF: $3,600 – Another Dodger lefty who’s somewhat affordable, he’s got a .907 OPS against righthanders like Joe Ross of the Nationals. He’s also batting .353/1.156 in the past week.
Josh VanMeter, OF: $2,300 – Greta Van Fleet? No, it’s another lightning bolt across our horizon. VanMeter plays against righties, and he’s facing right hander Chi Chi Gonzalez of the Rockies at home in Cincinnati. He is hitting an absurd .471/1.530 in the past week, and he hasn’t been around enough for the pitchers to adjust yet.
