The inaugural draft of the Team-Based Razzball Elite League 2 concluded this past week after more hiccups than my newborn daughter gets after crying for five minutes, and some unmentionable Commenters choosing to bail on the league, oh, ya know…the night before the draft. The nerve! Shunned! However, the Razzball Commenter community is so robust and incredible that we were able to find replacements rather quickly and finalize the setup to get along with the better of the two REL leagues. Yeah, I said it, JB! We can podcast tic-tac-toe fight soon to see which league is truly better.
REL2 mirrors REL1 in every aspect, except for the site we use for the league. REL1 chose Yahoo, while REL2 is housed on FanTrax. Neither are perfect options, but I have a personal vendetta against anything Yahoo fantasy sports, with their poopy app and convoluted interface. I also realize that I sound incredibly elitist with that comment, but it’s the ELITE league! I’m giving myself a pass.
As JB said in the first Draft Recap, “REL teams in the initial season began with keeping 17 players on their active roster, leaving 8 remaining spots to be filled with a $100 auction budget. Scrubs going for mad cash! It was a draft we’re likely never going to see anything quite like again, as every following season is a 3-round supplemental snake…I’m going to always cherish the inaugural REL auction draft!
As with the REL Hoops League, yearly winners will get their pennant retired on the footer graphic, and is now my new primary goal every fantasy baseball season. Get that Brewers ink up on the rafters! Unfortunately it’s going to take a season or two of rebuilding to even be in the conversation, but I’ve never done a full rebuild in a dynasty before! Should be fun…”
Right, JB…except you gotta long road ahead of you to make the Brewers work. Although I probably shouldn’t talk…I have the Braves. Ha! Here’s to 2020!
We’ll be posting updates once a week during the regular season, giving the other 29 REL2 GMs and myself a chance to recap their past week and explain their decisions. We’re about a week behind REL1 due to those silly owners which shall not be named, so no FAAB entries have run yet. The first one is this Sunday, but the draft’s done, so here’s how it went down and what the REL2 owners think about their teams prior to year one:

Taking over the woeful Padres, our goal was to try and add some baseball players to fill out the roster.
We started with warm body RP Jared Hughes for $12 and warm body SP Travis Wood for $10. Maybe a bit pricey for 20 holds and only an outside chance at a SP, but we are filling holes at this point. Hansel Robles for $23 was next. Need some help for significant fantasy contribution, but we like the talent. Bud Norris can’t play baseball very well, but for $15 he is a starting pitcher, so that’s about all we are looking for here. Jarrett Parker was worth an $8 flier. Probably a marginal player, but was good during last year’s cup of coffee. Juan Lagares is another guy that needs a break for regular playing time, but for $10 we’ll roll the dice again. Jason Motte for $3 is another cheap bet on some cheap stats. Aledmys Diaz for $5 was looking fun until the Cards signed Tejada and sent him down. See how he develops in AAA. Overall, we targeted a few guys we liked for an increased role if things go our way, and that’s who we drafted. |

Oops…Going into the draft I my biggest needs were power and 1B, as well as SP depth. I have Josh Bell, who is assumed to be called up by midseason, and John Jaso currently only eligible at C in Frantrax. Brandon Moss was available, and a perfect fit. Also, because of the Nationals depth, they did not keep AJ Cole. Adding him to my young SP core of Gerrit Cole, Tyler Glasnow, and Jameson Taillon, could have produced great long term depth. Moss and AJ Cole were bold, underlined, and highlighted at the top of my draft sheet. Then I fell asleep at the wheel, and missed out, not only on Moss and Cole, but all of the top available guys.
In my defense, this league is completely new to us all in terms of format and depth. Seeing minor leaguers and backups go for $20 will catch anyone off guard. So I sat back waiting for prices to drop, as I had quite a few guys I was targeting in middle of the draft. I didn’t expect there to be such a drop off in price from the higher end guys down to the middle tier of available players. So I ended up drafting my mid-level targets (Clint Robinson, Derek Dietrich, and Tom Murphy) for much less than I anticipated spending on them, and was inexplicably left with $50 in hand at the end of the draft. I could have drafted both of my initial targets in Moss and Cole, and still landed nearly all of the depth players I wanted. Later in the draft, I took a flyer on Juan Nicasio, which already seems to be a good buy, Dilson Herrera, Carlos Frias, Brett Anderson (to stash in one of 5 DL slots), and JP Howell. I think I have a top bullpen, and should have a top 5 offense thanks to the Pirates strong core of players. Will still be light on power, but with everyone in my lineup contributing, they should still put up respectable numbers as a team. After a draft that I can only describe as a disaster, I’m just thankful I have a good group of young talent to build around. I am hopeful that Glasnow, Taillon, and Josh Bell will get their shot early in the summer. If I can get good return in trading a few prospects from the deep minor league system that the Pirates have, I think I can recover and my Buccos can still be competitive this season. |

Phillies | 0 | Waiver Adds and Prospect Callups Past Week: |

Long story short: I’ve never faced a (fantasy baseball) challenge like the Philadelphia Phillies rebuild. This is a roster full of replacement level (or lower guys), plus a few interesting prospects and guys that could break out if they stay healthy or win the starting job. I like to be active as a manager, so patience and rebuilding through prospect development are not my style.
I deliberately left a hole in my roster at C, thinking I would punt as I don’t have confidence in either Ruiz or Rupp. When Nick Hundley (plus average, Colorado home, power upside) showed up in the draft pool, I knew I’d target him and then try to fill out my Pitching staff with high K/P where possible (Grimm) and guys who I think have been undervalued in the past (Petit). As this was my first auction, I probably overpaid but I got the positions and players that I wanted, so I am fine with my draft.
As this is an only league where 60% of our active roster has to be made up of Parent Club players, I am not likely to contend this year as the Phillies look to be at least two or three years away. Therefore, I have been talking trade for my few current season assets: Howard, Franco, Morgan, JP Crawford, Grimm, etc. I am considering trading Franco for SP depth in good situations or 3-4 prospects.

In an NL-Only league, talent is thin. Luckily the major league Diamondbacks squad is stacked with competitive talent. With the league scoring format, I took my chances and focused my keepers on pitching depth first, leaving me light in offensive depth. I was displeased to overpay for Kiki Hernandez in the draft, but was pleased to steal Keon Broxton for pennies as the final pick. I then doubled-down in the draft and focused exclusively on more pitching: Brandon Maurer, Tyler Lyons, Mark Bolsinger, Andrew Chafin, Addison Reed, Chris Hatcher. Those aren’t superstars, but there were no superstars in an NL Only supplemental draft.
Mets | 0 | Waiver Adds and Prospect Callups Past Week: |

Going into the draft I had two main goals; 1. Acquire a couple of quality relievers, 2. Add a hitter or two to cycle in my utility spot. Obviously with my lineup there are two things that are very clear, I’m aiming to compete NOW, and my starting pitcher is all good son. So with my highest bid I added Tyler Clippard, a player I think could see some saves and holds this season in Arizona. He’s been reliable for a long time. I then added Adam Warren, another deliver on a good team. Warren, might see time in the pen and the rotation; I’m hoping for a little flex love from the former Yankee. I then added Harold Ramirez a solid unprotected prospect that I’ve already fielded multiple calls on. Adam Duvall was a player that I entered the draft with my eye on. Much to my surprise I was able to hold off until the field had dwindled to just a few of us to nominate him. Adding a little cheap power is a plus for this Mets team. The rest of my bids were depth (Chris Johnson and Michael Morse), and handcuffs (Logan Verrett).

Brewers | 0 | Waiver Adds and Prospect Callups Past Week: |
FAAB Remaining: | $100 | n/a |
Sometimes being a fan of the NL can hurt. When the post went up for RE2, the only NL teams left were the Padres and the Brewers, and I staying true to my raisin’ (not raisins, to be clear), chose the Brewers. I know they aren’t great but they have made some trades to upgrade the farm system and if I am being completely honest I just wanted to get a reply in to snag a team. Sure, the AL teams were better. Sure, the Brewers don’t seem to be particularly good at anything at the moment. Sure, I’ve never been in a league so deep – my regular league is 16 teams mixed with 400 players drafted. This is a 15 team NL only with 375 drafted. Yoinks! AAAALSO, I’ve never been able to convince my regular league mates to try an auction style draft OR FAAB. What could possibly go wrong? With only a couple of days to get our 17 keepers on the 40 man and the 10 prospects in to M@, I had to more or less scramble.
My goal in the draft was to shore up pitching as best as I could and nab at least 1 possible closer who would get me holds and just try and get 2 value bats (I needed 1 OF and 1 UTIL). My targets were Jake Peavy, Chris Heston, Brandon Moss, Kevin Quackenbush, Tyler Clippard, Jumbo Diaz, Mark Reynolds, and Jonathan Broxton to name a few. I got stuck trying to up bid Chase Utley, but got him for $8 so things could have gone worse there, right? No. The one player I decided that I WAS leaving the draft with was Jake Peavy and I ended up with him at 30. I did get the least Dodger, Carl Crawford for $11 next. If you’re counting, and you’re not because I am not giving you all the info, that is $49 spent in the first 13 nominations. I wanted to be aggressive and leave no money on the table, but so far only one of my targets came to me. I took a break for a while to let some money come off the board before getting Jumbo Diaz for $19 at the 30th nomination. He was the last of my on-radar relievers, and I paid less for him than Quackenbush (22) or Clippard (36!), and while Broxton went for $14, he isn’t the setup man Seung-hwan Oh who went for $27. Diaz should get me Ks, Holds, and I think saves because Hoover has never been able to do particularly well as a closer when given the chance. Next I nabbed Adam Ottavino for $4 thinking that when he comes back this season he might be in line for saves or holds. After him, I made my greatest mistake of the draft. I had lost out on some of the guys I really wanted by other aggressive bidders and when I nominated Chris Heston, at one point I had him for I think $19. Someone bid 20, and I went over the top with my max bid of 26. Instant regret, as that would leave me 2 bucks for 2 players at nomination 52 out of 120. No one felt gracious enough to save me from myself and bid $27 and I got stuck with Alexi Amarista (who I just threw out but got hosed on) and Stephen Drew. I wish I could have those 3 back, but we’ve got the whole season for other people to disappoint me much more than myself! “But Jake, what sort of “team” are you putting out each week?” you ask. Eh. Jonathan Lucroy, Chris Carter, Scooter Gennett, Aaron Hill, Jonathan Villar, Ryan Braun, Carl Crawford, Domingo Santana, and Chase Utley (Stephen Drew, Garin Cecchini, and Alexi Amarista on bench, with Orlando Arcia in Minors slot). My pitchers look even worse with Taylor Jungmann, Jimmy Nelson, Jake Peavy, and Wily Peralta as my SPs (I am one short of the 5 needed. I will end up with someone even worse once the first round of FAAB runs! Hooray!) Jumbo Diaz, Jeremy Jeffress, Corey Knebel, and Will Smith are in the ‘pen, also short one real life throwing man. Zach Davies and Chris Heston sit on my bench, Ottavino in a DL spot, and Jorge Lopez is in my other Minors slot. So that’s about 730 words on how I am a bad pretend baseball manager. I look forward to being reminded weekly why this is just a hobby! -jaaaaake |

We went in to the draft looking to secure a good MR and speculate on some upside. Cedeno was good fit for MR, and with Boxberger’s injury, there’s upside for Save opps.
Beyond that we nabbed Canha and Medlen and feel they were some of the best remaining players, though not without quite a bit of risk. After that we were just trying to find some ABs. Goins is just a placeholder until our eligibility issues work themselves out with Lowrie and Coghlan.

As owner of the KC Royals defending their WS title this season, but an Astro fan living in Houston, I kept a pretty good combo of starters and relievers from the Royals in Ventura, Volquez and Duffy, however it looks like he will start season in the pen. The pen starts with Davis, Soria, and Herrera, so I had to added two starters and two relievers in the draft.Bullpen: I tried to get some cheap saves or holds with Nate Jones and John Axford, who I believe takes the A’s closer role over by May. The two starters I got were CC Sabathia, hopefully a sober one, and a player I thought was a sleeper in Mike Pelfrey real cheap for $1 of the Tigers, who has had a great spring.
I rounded out my offense in the auction with Josh Hamilton for $8, Matt Duffy of the Astros and my own Infante for second base and was saving about $23.00 figuring the second baseman I targeted Jimmy Paredes would cost allot but only $1, so I ended my auction leaving money on the table which is a lesson learned for a first timer in a Razzball league. |

My choice of the Mariners was the last team remaining of the available rosters in our AL only league. Seattle isn’t a terrible option in an AL-Only so I think I have a decent start there. My only starting spots open after all the keepers were at C and 2 RP options. Other than filling these, my main targets in the draft were young players with upside regardless of position. I managed to get Dioner Navarro for $1 and filled RP with Brad Brach ($14) and Will Harris ($15). I think each of these should have good value, especially with SV/HLD scoring. Filling my roster inexpensively allowed me to spend on Eddie Rosario at $28 and Tyler Duffey at $17. Even though the position wasn’t needed, Chase Headley at $16 seemed like a bargain. I rounded out the roster late by locking in two prospects I like in Tyler Naquin and Richie Shaffer at $4 and $1. Happy with the team so far but I still have some work to do to make up for Seattle’s terrible farm system.

As a league like this is virtually unchartered, this has been quite an interesting ride thus far. A draft with the top ranked players being Ian Kennedy and Pedro Alvarez? What a treat!
With the Twins, I chose I had to take a focus on building a team to be competitive not necessarily this year, but in a 1-2 year timeframe. There is a wealth of young talent here that hasn’t quite reached fruition, but also pieces to both build around and use to acquire future talent. Most of my keepers/protected players were obvious ones – Buxton, Sano, Dozier, Perkins, Jepsen, Berrios. The rest were decided with a prediction of what I thought would be available/scarce in the draft as well as potential future value. I set 3 draft goals: at least one Catcher (none rostered going into the draft), at least 2 “prospects” from a top-secret list (unless you have access to the internets), and at least 3 SP (only 2 guaranteed SP rostered going into the draft). It took a while before I was able to land a player, but I didn’t want to spend too much too early unless one of my primary targets was thrown out. I was able to grab 2 catchers (James McCann $16, Hank Conger $8), 2 prospects (Patrick Kivlehan $1, Henry Owens $35), and 4 SP (Owens, Matt Shoemaker $17, Ivan Nova $10, and Odrisamer Despaigne $2). Despaigne was a really crappy pick, but his name game is on point. Nova was “meh,” but they will have a need for him with CC and Tanaka on the payroll. Still waiting a bit on trades here as we fill out the league, see how the first FAAB period goes, and what fringe players hit/miss with the big league clubs as the season rolls around. JKolo |

In not keeping Didi Gregorius I figured I needed to spring for a 2b and Brock Holt seemed like the best one out there…man this AL league is shallow! I’ve never done an AL/NL only league before and this whole REL thing is wild anyway so my philosophy is basically Burn While You Learn.
So yea $38 for Brock felt steep but $9 for Neshek felt good…I think some people were sleeping as Neshek was the 1st pick….or maybe he has a crappy year and I look like Marty McFly’s body double in Back To The Future 2.. Such is the beauty of playing baseball in Fantasyland! Looking back now I am not so sure I shouldn’t have kept Beltran but I feel like his decline is real…and I wanted to go a bit younger….don’t we all. I ended up with Bassitt kind of on a whim and then Didi decided to accept my offer after all and stick with the club. He was kinda tough to let go so I kinda feel warm and fuzzy about that one. After the Manship landed my 1.5 year old son woke up from his nap and I logged off for about an hour…M@…I can’t imagine having 3…lawd have mercy (in my best reggaeton voice)!..I had a chance to log back in on my phone to find that the draft was still moving!….none of my queued players were on my team…awesome….but right then Logan Morrison was up for auction for $3…I threw down a buck more and ended up with him…nice one…I think. Vance Worley was a mistake…I meant to click Vidal Nuno…but now I think I’m happy about it…heh…Seth Smith….meh….I got some open spots to fill with the oh so loaded talent on the waiver….here we go! |

Rays | 0 | Waiver Adds and Prospect Callups Past Week: |

So I inherited an orphaned team, the last available in the league. My initial thoughts were, “Great, the Rays! They’ve got some pitching and some youth, and of course power will be a problem, but at least they’re a smart real-life team and I could be a frisky mid-pack squad this year, especially with some trade chips in my pocket.” Then I saw the exact roster I was left with and was less sanguine, and then Boxberger got hurt and now here we are in full-on triage mode.
I can’t really tell you my keeper and auction strategies because I didn’t participate, but here are a few thoughts:
Because I was short 2 roster spots, I was able to participate in a brief supplemental draft, where I had the 5th and 6th picks. I went with 1) Shane Greene, who might end up the Tigers’ 5th starter for a spell, is youngish and has the chance to regain his form of a couple years ago; and 2) Michael Feliz, who’s probably a top 10 prospect in the Astros’ system, throws hard and could contribute in the rotation or pen at some point this year. I was on the fence about Feliz vs. someone like Matusz, who went a couple picks later, but opted to focus more on the future and fill out the back end of my staff through FAAB. This could end up a lost year, but I have a funky foundation and am looking forward to a league type that’s pretty foreign to me.
In closing, RIP Phife.

I’m extremely stoked to be managing the Texas Rangers, the team I grew up rooting for and who I still long to see win a World Series. The Rangers are a great blend of solid major league talent and a top 5 farm system (even after dealing away guys like Jake Thompson, Nick Williams, and Jorge Alfaro for Hamels last July). I really like my lineup, it feels pretty balanced overall. My pitching staff however, I do not feel so great about. Outside of Hamels and the mid may return of Yu, the only other starter I kept was Martin Perez. I struggled a bit between keeping Martin Perez or Derek Holland, and wound up picking Perez due to age and upside. I was happy with the work he got in last year post TJ, and think his K/9 will rise significantly this year compared to last. These were the positions I needed to fill going into the draft; Catcher, 2 Starting Pitchers, 2 relievers, and 3 bench spots. Robinson Chirinos was the second player nominated in the draft, and I was happy to land him for $7. He had 10 homers last year, and I don’t think 17-20 is out of the question if he starts 130 games and stays healthy. Of course, towards the end of the draft Dioner Navarro went for a buck, so for whatever reason Catchers were going cheaper than the cougars Grey picks up on the weekends. My main target going into this draft was Ian Kennedy, so at the back of my mind I wanted to keep at least $60 of my budget for him (anything over $60 and I probably would have passed). Immediately after I won Chirinos, Ervin Santana was nominated. To me, the 3 best starters for a win now team were Kennedy, Santana, and Holland. Once the bidding on Santana was about to end around $20, I threw my money at him until I eventually won for $25. I like him for $25, he should get between 160-180k’s this year. Due to his suspension last year, his arm should be pretty fresh as well. So at this point we’re 3 players into the draft and my budget is already down to $68. Holland is nominated a few players later and goes for $24, which I’m fine with passing on. At this point I’m not touching anyone until I get Kennedy. Kennedy gets nominated soon after at #12, and I land him for $41. So 12 players into the draft and my budget is already swashed down to $27.This was my first auction draft, and with the player pool being so low my strategy was to spend quickly. The last thing I wanted was a huge budget and a bunch of players left over that I didn’t want. I lost out on Tom Wilhelmson for $18 which bummed me out. He would have been nice insurance for holds in case something happened to Kela or Dyson. My next pick was my boy Jake Diekman for $11. He came to Texas as a part of the Hamels deal. For those of you unfamiliar, he’s a badass hard throwing lefty who should get me a decent amount of K’s. So now I’m sitting at $16 left, and I’m not terribly thrilled with the rest of my draft. I did a decent amount of prepping for this draft, but didn’t realize how DEEP this would go. My next pick was Robbie Ross for a buck, hoping for a come back year out of him. Spent $6 on Cody Anderson as a flyer for the Indians rotation (I’m thinking Tomlin might start the year crappy and get sent down). I accidentally clicked a $2 bid on Coco Crisp and got stuck with him. Spent a buck on Chi Chi Gonzalez who I believe will be the Rangers 5th starter until Yu returns. So, that’s how the 2016 REL2 Rangers became the powerhouse it is. I’m really looking forward to this league, being a huge Rangers fan and managing all my favorite players will be a blast. I have a great shot to win the AL this year, and have big expectations for Profar/Mazara/Gallo/Brinson.

Basically I’m not in love with my draft and wasn’t as prepared as I should’ve been (crazy deep), but I got some of my targets and think I found some good value. As this league is S+Hlds, I wanted some solid RPs after keeping Kimbrel, Koji and Carson Smith, and I ended up with Fernando Salas ($22) who looks to be the 7th inning guy for the Angels, and Jake Petricka ($14), who may be down the ladder a bit for the White Sox but has some closing experience that might help his case in the event of an injury or what have you. Opting to keep Travis Shaw over Tazawa in my original 17 turned out to be a good call as he went for $43 in the REL1 draft. I love me some Junichi and I’m grateful for all he’s done, but I think Petricka has more value in a S+Hlds league going forward.
Say what you want about Beltran, but I’ll gladly take him for $17 to shore up OF (even if it is for only 3 weeks), considering he went for $46 in the other league. Pedro Alvarez went for like $5000 or something and there was a huge boner for Erasmo as well, but I think I got pretty good value with my Joe Kelly for $11 and Chris Young (the pitcher, for $13) – in Kelly I get another starter (for now at least) to keep it all in the Bosox family, and with Young, I get an RP-eligible starter, which could be huge in this 5 SP/5 RP format if he stays in the rotation all year. I had aimed to get Henry Owens back, but at $35, he got out of reach. Same with Brock Holt, who went to the (MF) Yankees – but for $38! Right now it doesn’t look like I’m doing this organization very proud… I had hoped to take home Baby Farq McGee-zax (Danny Farquhar) and Henderson Alvarez at the end of the draft, but I ran out of cash. Sufficed to say I’m still kicking myself for paying $13 for CJ Wilson (someone tell me something good about this). All in all I’m in win-now mode, so I’m not too worried about going younger with my picks. I took fliers on Justin Smoak ($1) and Preston Tucker ($9) to round out my draft, the latter of whom was being tried at first base camp at the time. Gregerson for $25 was an absolute steal early in the draft while people were hanging on to their cash, as well as Ervin Santana for the same amount. I also should’ve stayed in longer for Nate Jones, who finally went for $33 All in all this should be a fun format, trades will be big and I’m looking forward to repping Beantown. (Also – props to the commish for dealing with all of us idiots while having his 3rd kid basically in the middle of our draft) |

Thanks again to everyone who joined the REL2! And, as JB first stated last week, thanks for your interest in the league, Razzball Nation! Our hope is that this league becomes a staple at Razzball, and provides a glimpse into how you can approach AL-Only and NL-Only leagues, prospects in the minors and super deep leagues. These owners are awesome for stepping up; I think you’ll enjoy reading their recaps each week!
