Hehe, I said tool. Our Fantasy Baseball War Room is one part draft tool, one part fantasy team evaluator, one part fantasy junkie’s s’s and g’s tool, one part holy, two parts smokes, three parts… How many parts is that so far? Cause it’s only really seven parts total. I think there’s one part kill-your-day-with-this-war-room-thing-a-maboob in there too. I don’t know, guys and four girls, I think it’s pretty cool and I only get excited about things once every three full moons or once every time I see the t-shirt with three moons and a wolf.  For reals, it might be the best thing since sliced bread.  Now sliced bread that is toasted and buttered is another story entirely.  This shizz is so insane, I just had an aneurysm.  Are you happy now?!

If you’re unfamiliar with our Fantasy Baseball War Room, it’s a draft tool to help you track where you are at any moment in a draft.  It shows you if you have too many steals, homers… Or if your ERA or WHIP are too low.  Or too high.  Or if your lamb is still rare or should be turned (results vary on lamb).  If you’ve already drafted a team, go into the War Room, enter your team and it shows you exactly how stacked/dreadful the team is.  If you’re in the middle of a draft, you can filter which guys are left that have the most home runs according to my projections.  Or the most steals, or the most runs or the most whatever (only applicable if “Whatever” is a category in your league).  If you’re in a bind, go into a Warm Room and take a shvitz.  Ah…That’s better!  There might be some bugs in our Fantasy Baseball War Room, just comment here and we’ll look into fixes. The default projections are mine from the 2015 fantasy baseball rankings. Step by step:

  • Sign up. (Dur.)
  • Choose what kind of team you want to draft. How many catchers, outfielders, middle infielders, etc. ESPN and Yahoo are for position eligibility. It doesn’t mean you’re playing there. ESPN is 20 games started; Yahoo is 5 started and 10 games played. So that means ESPN and CBS are the same. Or wherever you play that uses 20 or 10 game eligibility is accounted for. I say configure the team to look like our Razzball Commenter League teams.  And sign up for one too!
  • Now as you draft players, click Draft next to their name. If someone else takes them, then X them out. If a player is eligible at more than one position, drop down the menu to the position you want them at.  If you can’t find a player, search for them at the top.  As Jeff Francoeur would say, voila!  Or if you’re a Twins fan, Frank Voila!
  • Get as close to the Totals as you can.
  • Wanna start again? Delete the Team, by scrolling to the right of the player search at the top and a down arrow will appear. Click that, then click the pinwheel under ‘Taken” and delete team or sign out. We got pinwheels! Wanna throw your computer out the window from excitement?  Go for it!  Oh, and don’t lose your password after you sign up, I have no idea how to retrieve it.  Yippee!
  • Note from our programmer, Jamil.  If you get this error page, then your shizz is broke and you need to buy a new computer.  But, if you don’t want to buy a new computer, you should clear your cookies and start again.  Likely what happened is you’re logged into the app still from an old version.  Less likely, you still have the same internet cache from last year and haven’t cleared your cookies once in 12 months.  I’m not judging, Cust kayin’.

Its probably been asked before, but do these “goal” totals change at all for h2h leagues?

Hi Grey, thanks for your tools and articles.

I’ve got Stanton and Abreu for keepers, and considering Rizzo or Rendon for my first round pick (except keepers). Am thinking one of them (Rizzo,Rendon) could be gone before my turn.

Who in the list should be my next two round picks?
Arenado, Dickerson, B Hamilton, D Gordon, Dozier, Pence, Longoria, Kinsler, Wong

    A) I draft Rizzo (if Rendon is gone)
    b) I draft Rendon (if Rizzo is gone)

    Kindly pick two, thanks.

    • Wilson says:
      (link)

      To be clarify,

Who in the list should be my next two round picks “after I draft Rizzo or Rendon and owning two keepers Stanton and Abreu” ?

(Supposed decision making could be different after I draft Rizzo or Rendon.)

    • Grey

      Grey says:

@Wilson: No problem… Rendon, Arenado prolly, but know nothing of your league

      • Wilson says:
        (link)

        @Grey: 10-team league, 5×5 with OBP

Assuming Rendon is drafted by other team,
Pick two more picks if I drafted Stanton Abreu Rizzo Arenado. Thanks.

Brantley, Dickerson, B Hamilton, D Gordon, Dozier, Pence, Longoria, Kinsler, Wong

          • Wilson says:
            (link)

            @Grey: thanks.

So my draft could be: Stanton Abreu (keeper) -> Rizzo (assume no Rendon) -> Arenado (4th round) -> Dickerson (5th) -> Brantley (6th, if they are still there)

            Questions (10-team league)
            1. Should I draft a MI (eg. D Gordon, Dorzier) in the 5th or 6th round?
            2. Should I draft a SP in the 5th or 6th round?
            3. Donaldson (if he is there) over Arenado in the 4th round?

            Thanks.

  6. Chris says:

    Hello Grey,

If I can draft well, I am targeting the following players for 12 team, H2H league.

    C- Mesoroco
    1B – Rizzo (Keeper)
2B – Walker .(Dozier if falls)
    3B – Tier 3 (Harrison, Carpenter)
    SS – Desmond
    OF – Stanton (Keeper)
    OF – Kemp
OF – Bruce (he is going low on must drafts) or Myers (expect a rebound)
    UTL – Freeman

Will play the SPs as it goes, but won’t overreach. Planning to have for SP1 a high tier 2 pitcher, and then most low SP teir 3 and 4.

What you think of the offense?

    thanks

  7. TheStraw says:

    Keeper help…need to choose 7

    Betts – $10
    Bryant – $4
    Bumgarner – $26
    Cespedes – $27
    Chapman – $27
    Fielder – $5
    Frazier – $6
    Goldschmidt – $30
    Gray – $7
    Jones – $32
    Gyorko – $5
    Rosenthal – $8
    Ross – $9
    Soler – $5

I think I need to package some players to get an offensive upgrade…like using cespedes, bum, or chapman if I can get anyone to take them at those prices. Or, I can try to trade jones -good hitter but expensive – for someone like Donaldson or Brantley who cost significantly less ($8 or so). But saving money might not be a goal since stars regardless of cost are being kept over value since this is only our ‘2nd year of doing keepers.

Any advice would be most excellent. Thanks. Preparing for the rcl draft as we speak

        @JeF With 1 F:

Thanks for the suggestions. I think most in my league will be throwing pitchers back and keeping offense, so I might not keep two pitchers. If I don’t keep Bryant, I imagine I should try to trade him while people are drooling over him. Trying to get Donaldson at 8 or Marte or Puig at 9 or Rendon at 6 currently.

    Q. Who gets close to .250 BA this season … Chris David or Jay Bruce? They seem to be the same person but at different positions.

I’ve got a Jurickson Profar question. Another owner in my deep keeper league is looking to trade him. He’s asking me if I’m willing to deal Chris Owings. I already have Segura at SS and was planning to keep Owings as a bench bat (since our league is very deep and Owings can back up both 2B and SS in Yahoo). Our league has several DL slots and a couple of minor-league spots. Would it be worth swapping Owings for Profar? What’s your long-term outlook on him?

J – FOH – can’t do an RCL this year, between work and health issues, I just don’t have the time, wish I could dude..cheers

            2 points for each steal, 2 for 2B & 3 for 3B, 1 for BB and HBP

I will get power at the draft and in trade. I have an offer out there for Jose Abreu. I can not keep both those SP’s plus we start 2 at every position, except C, 4OF’s 1 U 1 DH..

    Thank you! This rules.

Looking for some community input on league management wherever I can get it.

The deep NL dynasty I’m running with some drunks is adding a new team/manager this season. Under the framework of an auction draft/keepership, how do we go about letting this expansion team grab some talent to build around? Lottery? Extra auction money? Coward’s cotillion?

We’ve tried nothing and we’re all out of ideas.

    sweet ass sweet.

    Question about format/targets…

1)In a H2H 5×5 where OPS replaces AVG and therefore HR’s score across 4 of 5 cats. would you condone punting SB’s and loading up on power? (e.g. instead of guys like Gordon/B.Hamilton/Segura go with Dozier/Cespedes/Castro)?

2)On the other side of the x, if QS replaces W would you change your targets at all? Was thinking about punting saves and running the RP eligible SP’s from there like Wood/Stroman/Carrasco. Or would you opt to acquire sagnof from faab and make some attempt at the S category?

Great WAR room tool… With my first pick at #6, I expect both Rendon and Harper to be available. I’d like Goldy or EE but let’s assume they’re not available. My 3 keepers are Dickerson, Kipnis and Machado.

Would you still take Rendon (we have 1 Util spot), or take Harper, knowing you already have Kipnis and Machado to cover 2b and 3b, and if value presents itself I can still grab Beltre or another 3b later.

    Wonderfully written once again…
Question on a potentially large trade.
Note: I have three first round picks

I trade Yelich and 1-7-19 rd picks

I get Stanton and 8-9-11 picks. Stanton is keepable in round one.

For this deal to be made possible there’s a third party trade:
My 4-9 for 3-19. The three being the first pick in
    the third round.

    The overall trade would be:
    Yelich 1-4-7-9- for
    Stanton 3-8-9-11-
    19s cancel out.

    12 team league keep 5
Donaldson samardzjia wood and kluber are current keepers.

    Pull the trigger or hold?

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      I’d want Stanton

      • LC says:
        (link)

@Grey: To further the conversation, id be burning two picks in the first, but still have a pick in the first, another in the second and three more in the third. Two in each of the next 4 rounds. Samardzjia, Wood and Kluber are being kept at 11-13-20 respectively. Donaldson at 4.

I think the trade is a good idea as well.

When it’s your pick in a draft and all of the guys at the top of your draft board are guys in “bad tiers”…..do you draft them anyway (assuming they are there because they have fallen a bit to a more acceptable position), or do you reach for someone else in a preferred tier?

Just keep putting the scary clown back in the box, by any means neceassary, and turn the handle more slowly next time. If you are both still in the same house when it is all over than go on a nice vacation and rekindle. Or play more fantasy sports to numb the pain. Noise cancelling headphones are a necessary tool if attempting to wait out the Pause. And remember, the Pause can not be wished or prayed away. It is inevitable.

Grey, I’ve been looking forward to drafting Rusney Castillo as my third outfielder but I am suddenly having cold feet. Not because he’s an unknown, not because he’s a communist, and not because he wears his t-shirts three sizes too small like all Cubans do. It’s just that he’s projected to hit 7th in Boston’s lineup.

Even if Castillo lives up to his promise, he’s not going to leap over Sandoval, Ramirez and Ortiz. Probably not even Napoli. Best case scenario he could bat leadoff – which I could see happening if Victorino is in RF, but not if Betts is.

Should I draft Castillo if there are similar OFs out there with less upside but more ABs per game?

Brantley will be $10 the following year and Wong will be $9 and then $13 if I choose. I already have Dickerson $5, Ozuna $5 and Pollock $5 in my OF. Beltre and Longo are only top 3B out there.

Thanks for the prompt response. I have a file I use to track during the auction what teams can bid on players at specific positions, which I find extremely important at the back end of an auction. I’m not talented enough to integrate it into the war room file. Anyone I should send it too?

            (link)

There is nothing in the war room to track what positions your opponents need. You know how much money and how many spots, but don’t have anything regarding position needed. If you have a max bid of $3 and need a catcher and your sleeper is still out there, you would want to know if you can be outbid, no? Where can I send the file? Easier to explain if you are looking at the document.

@J-FOH: that’s better than my 30 man league, with 24 hours per pick, (28 owners averaged about 2.4 hours per pick), with the other 2 asshats occasionally taking 25 hours or more (which meant their picks were skipped till they finally showed up). We only had to do 5 rounds (and about 20 supplemental picks) and it took 25 days.

              Grey says:

@Grey: yeah decent owners seem to average not far off of 2 hours per. And to some extent the player depth we’re drafting (the draft i mentioned was only minor guys, and we have a 25 per team cap for those) gives some leeway for more time.

No add limits per week, and in 12 teamers you ain’t kidding about streaming after they’ve played 2 str days as the guys available is straight up crazy good compared to most other leagues i play in here.
