I suggest you grab a 3rd baseman before leaving the top 100, but that’s not always possible.  So, if you miss out on one,  this list is guys that can be had later in your drafts.  Look at this as a supplement to the top 20 3rd basemen of 2010 fantasy baseball.  Where applicable, click on the players name to read more about them or to see their 2010 projections.  Anyway, here’s some 3rd basemen to target for 2010 fantasy baseball:

Ian Stewart – For those drinking every time I mention Stewart, keep your buzz going.

Adrian Beltre – If he stays healthy, he’ll outproduce Aramis Ramirez.

Chris Davis – May not have 3rd base eligibility in your league (11 games last year).  If he does have the eligibility, there’s a chance he could be a bargain basement Mark Reynolds. (Yes, last year I said Mark Reynolds was a bargain basement Chris Davis.  Weird!)

Chase Headley – He’s a career .301/.368/.437 hitter in 492 ABs.  Oh, that’s in away games.  Yeah, thanks, Petco!  So he’s not going to be last round value that turns into a top 20 hitter, but he could sneak into the top 12 third basemen overall.

Kevin Kouzmanoff – He was actually decent away from Petco in his career.  Then again, he’s moving to another pitchers’ park.  Be hard for me to own Kouzmanoff in a 12 team league… In a 14 team league, Kouz wouldn’t be terrible.  I’d expect a line of 60/24/80/.260.  Nothing spectacular, but in a deep enough league there’s value there.  So, maybe mess with The ‘Noff!

Brandon Wood – Honestly, I won’t believe he has the starting job until I see it.  I have the feeling Scioscia’s spinning bottle is going to stop on Aybar or Izturis’s name to start at 3rd base at least 3 times a week.  It’ll be the Figgy Duets.

    Being a Cardinal fan, I can’t help but encourage people to shy away from David Freese as a “sleeper” at 3B this year. Do I think he will man the hot corner to start the season, yes! Do I also think his starting job will be over faster than LaRussa can fall asleep drunk at a stoplight. Personally I can see Felipe Lopez taking over that job as early as middle-may, and even more possiblier(?), give more AB’s to Allen Craig leaving Freese out in the cold….(my puns really suck)

    Hey Grey,

    I was offered Utley/Oswalt/Capps for my B Phillips/CarGo/Lidge in my 12 team 6×6 H2H League. Should I accept?

  3. I can’t believe I missed the Old Man/Chumlee reference in the Top 20 3B post.

    I’m instituting a cuss jar in my fantasy league this year, dammit!

    @Nate Marcum: He was on the deep sleeper list last week, but, yeah, he may be out by April 15th.

    @Chris: I’d want Utley’s side.

    @Mark Geoffriau: Ha!

    Stewart. Stewart. Stewart. Waterfall!

    I know you’ve been getting this a lot but, is Roberts dropping yet or is it still too early?

    Dear Grey,
    Let me start by saying that I really love your work. The way that you seamlessly weave witty pop culture references with serious fantasy baseball knowledge…well, it really moves me. Last year, when Milton was with us, he and I would check your site daily and sometimes he would just go crazy over some of your old-school hip hop and “The Wire” references (I do miss Milton’s infectious laughter in the locker room). Anyways, I can understand you calling me injury prone (I guess), and if you want to drop me out of your top 100, that’s your prerogative. But saying that Adrian Beltre will put up better numbers than me this year? Well, sir, now you’ve just gone too far. Didn’t he hit like 8 home runs last year? Son, I’ll do that by May 15th! It seems that I’ve now entered Jorge Posada territory with you and, frankly, I don’t like it one bit. Aside from that, you’re doing a great job. Keep it up!
    Yours truly,
    Aramis Ramirez

    Thanks. I have him in a 7 keeper league. I shouldn’t keep Abreu, Javy, Vlad, or Ian Stewart over him right?
    @mc serch: I am refusing to hit anywhere near 30 HRs this year in solidarity to the bashing my fellow corner infielder is taking on this site
    Sincerely,
    Derek Lee

    @AL KOHOLIC: Yeah, people forget how much they loved him last year. Though he did help with that.

    @Tom Reale: Depends who your other guys are. Maybe Abreu, though I doubt it.

    @Grey: Just to follow up on the Holds v Saves discussion from the previous post, I fear I may have omitted some important information. While the pitching slots are SP x 2, RP x 2 and P x 3, we also have 8 bench slots, and we have daily changes.
    This means there’s bit more scope for drafting more than one MR and/or closer and swapping them in and out. If I just draft one of each, I’ll be conceding two categories a week to anyone who drafts, say, three of each – which is historically what people have done.
    Also, we’re 14 teams this year – does that make it more sensible to go after Holds over Saves?
    Apologies if I’m being a doofus.

    I see what you’re saying with Aramis.

    But I think he is heading fast into underrated territory.

    Can easily see a .310 27 95 110 season for him.

    Can Beltre do that? I don’t think so.

    @Grey:
    My B. 12 team. H2H. 6×6. (OPS & QS). And I am a huge fan of the quantity over quality strategy for SPs. I rarely ever have a top tier dude because I always keep 7 hitters year to year. But, I usually win Wins and K’s every week just like you said and I have won 2 out of the last 3 years. It’s funny that I just found your site this year and my buddy in that league said I have to read it because it sounds like you employ a lot of the same strategies that I have been using to win. For instance, a couple guys I loved last year that my leaguemates didn’t get. Sanchez, Beckham and Stewart. I also feel an unusual aversion to Abreu this year, I have owned him for the last 3 years and loved him, but I think he may be my Aramis this year.

    Wieters
    Morneau
    Roberts?
    Longoria
    Hanley
    Braun
    CarGo

    Abreu
    Javy
    Baker
    Vlad

    Hey Grey, what do you think of Guillen saying he’s going to let the ChiSox run wild this year. Beckham 20/20? Or is this standard spring training BS like Adam Jones saying he was going to steal 30 plus bases last year….

    Grey – check out these question marks I just drafted. Are there any that you hate or love? They each kept getting skipped in the draft to the point where I had to take a chance (in the 20th round for example).

    J Hamilton
    B Abreu
    Vlad
    Rios
    Ibanez

    Grey says:

    @Steve: With that setup, I’d draft 2-3 closers, one MR and the rest SPs, while keeping an eye for MRs on waivers and switching them out with SPs.

    @Mickey: Beltre adds in 10 steals which accounts for the loss on average.

    @Tom Reale: I’d keep Roberts for now, but watch for news, though I’m not sure when you have to decide by. If sooner vs. later, I’d just keep Abreu. Though not crazy about him either. Though II, Abreu does beat Roberts at OPS.

    @Quinn: Standard BS

    Grey says:

    For anyone: First time doing an auction league. Is it a rule that you have to leave a draft with a full team? (i.e. rather than waiting to fill your squad with FAs if you run out of money) Do most sites have an automatic stopgap built in to prevent you from running out of money? Thanks in advance for the help.

    @Grey: hi, question on your pitchers pairing. I think a SP from the verlander tier might fall to end of rd 5. I was considering drafting the upper half of the next tier in rd 6 on the way back if the right player fell. You warned not to “reach” for the next tier, would you consider that reaching? ( for a josh johnson, lee, hamels, or jimenez). I do not think that theyd be there for me in rd7.

    dilemma: if players in lind tier + granderson are avail in rd 5 or if adam jones is avail in 6 would you take them as OF2 or solidify SP1 and SP2 with the aforementioned strategy….thanks again; have a draft early next week

    Hey Grey, me and 2 others NEED a 3rd basemen, Chipper, Stewart (might go at 2nd), Beltre and Cantu are left. We’re in the 10th round, should I punt 3rd and wait it out?

  24. Grey

    @incognithole: That sounds fine for a pitcher. I’d take OF2 first.

    @Cookie’s Monsters: 10th round of how many teams? 12 teams? Then take any of those guys except Cantu. Stewart, Chipper, Beltre… In that order.

    Hey Grey, I was actually wondering about 3B’s because there is such a huge drop off this year – in general do you think it is better to take Chipper, suck it up and deal with his 200 minor injuries, or wait and take Beltre?

  29. Frank Rizzo says:
    (link)

    If Stewart is my starting 3b on any team I draft, I’m dead. I’ll take him as a 2b only.

    Adrian Beltre with better stats than Aramis is hilarious.

    Chris Davis could be a real bargain. Yahoo has him buried so deep in their rankings you have to look pretty hard to find him. He’s not as much of a bargain on ESPN though.

  30. Tom Reale says:

    @Tom Reale: Thanks. We are going to start drinking every time Stewart K’s too. No, not just because we are drunks, but also because it helps to pass the time between his HRs. And, if Sanchez K’s Stewart, we will be pounding a car bomb. No, not just because St. Paddy’s Day is just around the corner, but also in solidarity to our Scottish(or at least Scottish-sounding) bredren that are being persecuted by Jewish-Mexicans around the world.

    @Grey: Am considering, discounting Holliday a bit. He had ONE steal for the months of Aug and Sep–total. STL ranks about 25 in team steals. Not sure LaRusskie unleashes him. Having trouble seeing him get 5 SB, much less the 15 originally targeted. What do you think?

    Question:

    I get second pick in the first three rounds of this years keeper draft (5X5 roto, 10 teams). If I have Tulo as a keeper SS, but no 2nd baseman, should I take Utley over Hanley? It looks like Kinsler, Phillips, Roberts, Pedroia, Hill, and Cano will all be kept by other teams.

    @Tom Reale: Ha!

    @T-BZA: I’d want Kemp.

    @Simply Fred: I think he can get 7 steals in two weeks and then none for two months. They’ll be there at the end of the year.

    @timSTi: Looks like you punted average quite a bit, which isn’t terrible, but it’s something to be aware of. Not sure why if someone else takes a top tier SP you have to take one too.

    @zorob: Take Utley

    Grey, what round would you think about Sandoval? I have this dream, I am drafting and I get Howard/Tex/Miggy in the first round, Tulo in the second, Sandoval in the third, and Cano in the fourth.
    Is third round too early for Tae-Bo Panda?
    I know what you are saying but; I feel as if I can get some nice/great value in the outfield starting round 7 or so. Would an OF of Bruce, Hunter Pence and Adam Jones be that bad to start with? Gotta be better than some of those shleptards I would end up with in the IF.
