Brad Peacock isn’t even ranked in the top 150 starters for CBS. Then again they have Javier Vazquez ranked 47th overall and he retired, so there’s that. Here’s what I said when he was traded to the A’s, “Peacock had a great season in Double- and Triple-A last year, putting up a 2.39 ERA and a 177/47 K/BB line. The A’s basically got Gio Gonzalez back. I’m gonna be all about Peacock in 2012 like I just woke up from a nap after drinking seven glasses of water.” And that’s me quoting me! I obviously thought the acquisition of Peacock by Pitt was a great get. I wonder if skinny Jonah Hill is as good a baseball evaluator as fat Jonah Hill. I know he’s not as funny. He’s not even as easy to look at. Nothing worse than the nerd who gets the summer makeover and thinks he’s now cool. You’re still a nerd, embrace your Jew-fro. Don’t make me take off my mustache and smack you with it. Peacock is done with the minors. He has nothing left to prove, so I do think the understaffed A’s will show off their Peacock in their Opening Day rotation. So what can we expect of Brad Peacock for 2012 fantasy baseball and what makes him a sleeper?
He has a good fastball, but when Peacock is working off the curve his balls can be all over the place. I’m sorry, I need to pause to giggle. Okay, back to business. Usually Peacock gets so worked up when he’s promoted… Okay, I need to just call him “he” otherwise I’ll never get through this post. He tends to lose control and his ratios take a hit when he’s first promoted. I’m thinking it’s because he gets over-excited. Hopefully, he only has these issues for the first 40 innings. That’s how long it usually lasts. Luckily, his home park is very forgiving. The exciting thing about him — the Ks. C’mon, you knew that was coming. He had a 11+ K/9 in Double-A and a 9 K/9 in Triple-A. If he only gives a 7+ K/9, I’m still buying. With some command issues, but nice Ks and no wins on the A’s, I see his line at 9-8/3.60/1.30/170. Optimistic, but completely doable. Peacock isn’t just a command a foul-mouthed old man will shout at the urinal, he’s a great sleeper for 2012 fantasy baseball.

com’n grey give us his real name! Brad peaCOCK! sounds like a pornstar name to me!
nice article, i agree on peacock 100%, and it made me happy when i saw you mention how u loved him when u first wrote about the trade.
I also really like the other pieces that Oakland got in the deal, most of all, Tommy Millone.
I also think that Millone starts the year in the rotation, and the person i compare him to is BRANDON BEACHY. This guys stats are nearly a carbon copy of what Beachy did in the minors, and he is also an guy who, like Beachy, was a little older than most prospects and more polished.
I will draft Millone all over the place, and I expect him to have similar success to beachy with an era around 3.75 and 8+ k/9 to go with a minute walk rate. This is someone u can get LATE in most drafts. Remember his name people!
It’ll be fun to use Fantasy Team names with Peacock puns if he turns out to be good.
Grey, I know its coming soon, but could I get a quick opinion of J Zimm for this year?
So according to CBS’s depth chart, the A’s rotation is 1) McCarthy, 2) Colon, 3) Peacock, 4) Parker, 5) Milone, 6) Braden, 7) Anderson
Anderson won’t be back til late spring at the earliest, but Braden should be ready before the end of May.
If Peacock is susceptible to nerves early, will the A’s let him work it out? It makes sense that they would – they’ve been pretty transparent about this being a year of rebuilding, and if Peacock’s already done everything he can do in the minors, you probably want to stick with him through the rough start. Moreover, w/McCarthy, Parker, Colon and Milone rounding out the rest of the start-of-the-season rotation, Peacock may not be the worst of the bunch when Braden returns.
But let’s say they are all doing OK. Does Colon go to the bullpen? Or does Braden ease his way back by starting in long relief?
@Tony: Hehe
@joe from point pleasant: Yeah, Millone’s a good name too. Not as fun to say, but still good…
@weas: Yup!
@AdamH: Solid
@MStark: Braden and Anderson can’t be counted on for anything. Colon goes to waivers or a contender.
Grey – from the previous post, I did see that Heyges picture. The rest of them looked much the same! Him, not so much.
@joe from point pleasant: Isn’t Millone a soft-tosser? Doesn’t seem like he’d have the K-potential to match Beachy.
hey grey,
i usually dont like to keep SP’s, but i have to as most of the other decent SP will be kept in my 16 team keeper. i figured out my position player keepers
that said,
which 2 would you keep out of these guys (wins and QS count a lot)
Latos, Beachy, Dan Hudson, Derek holland, Ervin Santana
thanks!
@Steve: Yeah, didn’t age well.
@the grate one: Latos, Hudson…
@Joe C – He throws like 87-88 mph and touches 90 every so often… His two big pitches are his plus curveball and plus change.
His repertoire/stuff is similar to that of Shaun Marcum’s exept his command is impeccable.
It is possible his K rate is closer to 7k/9 but i still really like this kid.
@joe from point pleasant: Sounds delicious!
Which just makes the Colon signing more mind-boggling. Why not give these kids a chance to learn OTJ in the majors? Seems like they’ve proven themselves in the Minors already.
A’s baseball would be more interesting to watch if these kids were out there rather than Fatolo Colon.
$5 Heyward or $0 Moustakas?
How do you compare your peacock to Jarrod Parker are they both worth ownin?
@Jans: Heyward
@RMM: Both worth owning.
hey grey, i just made a trade in that 16 team league
so, if you could only keep one of latos or dan hudson (again where W’s and QS count for a bunch – but we get tagged for L’s and BBI)
which one you keepin?
thanks (again)
Just when I was getting over losing Peacock ($5) to the AL, you had to write about him. Oh well.
Would you rather, in an NL Only League (4×4 $260 Cap where we must keep at least 7.)
a- Keep Halladay at $40
b-trade him for Chacin $10(Free Agent at end of season) and $1Jay
c-trade him for Chapman ($10/2 yr) and $1 Jay
d-none of the above.
@the grate one: Latos
@elwood blues: B
I can’t help but have Filthy Sanchez deja vu when reading this post. Lots of Ks, lots of hope… potential for lots of let down when I use a late round flier on him.
Grey who do you see as the ultimate sleeper this year – like a cargo of 2010?
@awesomus: the huge difference is that filthy’s huge problem has been his walks, and Peacock seems to be much more of a control kinda guy. Just above 2 bb/9 in the minors
cbs has the worst rankings, something like 20 SPs in the first 4 picks…literally and figuratively. Their draft room rankings are even crazier. Thank you Razzball for restoring order!
Guys you do know a Peacock is a bird too, thats what came to mind with me- though not as funny as the other meaning granted.
Im loving this post though Grey, added him to my farm last year in a keeper league. By the sounds of it ill be promoting him very soon and thus costing me $0 this year!
One other thing, any idea when Rudy’s releasing the auction dollar values for players?
I’ve looked at CBS dollar values but they are just err…BAD. I mean they value J Bruce the same as R Martin ($13)…
This is likely everywhere already (I have no facebook acct so I’m not in tune with the viral zeitgeist), but anythehoo:
http://murkavenue.tumblr.com/post/16553509655/i-found-ice-cubes-good-day
@royce!: any info on the last P…I hear it’s not that simple…
@Awesomus Maximus: Nah, agree with royce!
@Tom: CarGo wasn’t a huge sleeper. He was being drafted around 100 overall in 2010.
@exactly: Yeah, they’re bonkers.
@TheNewGuy: Thanks!
@TheNewGuy: Bruce the same as Martin? Ha! Yeah, Rudy will do them.
@royce!: That’s awesome! I thought it was gonna be a link to that picture of Ice Cube rafting saying something like “‘Member when he was hard?”
Right but let say someone with that potential value
@Grey: @royce!: True, true… I think it was the line, “With some command issues, but nice Ks…” that caused the vuja de. Just ignore the guy on pain meds… carry on.
The other day some of the commenters were talking about baseballs being modified by MLB depending on the desired results and that they’re probably made in China or something. Turns out “or something” has actually been Costa Rica since 1987. Yahoo just happened to have an article up this morning about things not necessarily made in America.
http://finance.yahoo.com/news/10-american-products-arent-american-133000946.html
You can find more specifically about Rawlings’ MLB baseballs here.
http://www.livestrong.com/article/270577-history-of-the-rawlings-baseball/
That’s not to say MLB could not have directed the cork core, pink rubber, “conditioned” yarn and/or two-piece leather cover to be tweaked. All the materials could naturally vary to an extent as well and the tolerances are fairly lenient. “All official major league baseballs must measure 9 to 9.25 inches in circumference and weigh 5 to 5.25 ounces.” However, they must all have “…exactly 108 stitches of red thread.”, whatever it is, and the mud every team uses still comes from the same spot in New Jersey since the late 1950s.
http://baseballrubbingmud.com/
The mud, of course, has a “secret ingredient” to add even more mystery.

I don’t have an opinion, per se, but the nerd in me found these things interesting.
Oswalt to sign with the Cards it seems. What, if anything, do we think of this?
Grey, when the Ryan Braun news broke, you said in redraft leagues you wouldn’t touch him before 10th round and for keepers you could make a case for the 5th round.
I was looking at the ADP reports on MDC and he’s averaging 2nd-3rd round.
You think that round value sticks? And in a keeper where you keep players based on selected round is he worth a 2nd round pick?
@centralohguy:
from one nerd to another ,
thoroughly enjoyed your post .
that “secret” ingredient …. jimmy hoffa’s remains ??
Sup Razzball? Good to see yas. I’m gonna ask this question now so nobody notices…
Yo Grey any chance Morel craps out and Viciedo gets some time at 3b?
“Put Maybin on the Rockies and I’d have him in the top 25 outfielders.” EEEEEEEEK! (Singing now in my best Opera voice) Youuuu do not belieeeeeve thisssssssssss!
also i didn’t see if you adjusted your position rankings in terms of scarcity…does 3B bump up one now that it will pick up HanRam, Trumbo and Cabrera 2 weeks into the season?
@Tom: If BJ backs into .280 average with 20/40 he’ll be huge…
@Awesomus Maximus: Seems to only have command issues when he first starts a new level of pro ball.
@Steve: Doesn’t do anything to his value from last year.
@Eddy: Yeah, in keepers… I don’t know what people are doing drafting him that early in redraft leagues. I think it hasn’t sunk in yet that he’s missing a third of the season.
@cockyphoenix: Hey, man! Good to see you! Yeah, I think Morel does crap out and Viciedo does end up there.
@Captainpyper: Where am I bumping Miggy to? He’s ranked number one. Hanley’s early 2nd round after being terrible last year, not sure where he’s being bumped to either.
Grey: Assuming I jump the gun and draft Bumgarner to be my #2 (with some Garza Luebke and Morrow types to pull up the rear), what are my chances to pull up in first place?
a) 1 in 12
b) not enough information
c)
@ Grey
@ Albert
i’m bored .
got anything for me ??
Man I was just looking back at 2011 projected sleepers and I think you guys missed on just about all of them. You have no where to go but up.
@Wake Up: sorry for the lame OPP joke…*trombone*
grey-in one of my leagues, sandoval is eligible at C (don’t ask). would u trade granderson for him straight up?
@exactly: What do you mean?
@Wake Up: I enjoyed it.
@pubscout: Nah
@Wake Up: I also enjoyed it, but was woefully away from a computer for most of the weekend. A belated bravo!
Peacock or N. Feliz as a SP?
