It’s hard to believe there’s only one week to go in this marathon of a season.  We’ve tortured ourselves for 25 long weeks, agonizing over batty calls, dipping into the streamers with mixed results, cursing players and praising others.  We’ve ignored our families, our jobs and our personal hygiene and now it all comes down to the final week.  You may smell like stale Funyuns, but dagummit, that virtual fantasy trophy is all yours.  Team Levy is perfect yet again, gaining back the point they lost last week.  After some good conversation with the crowd I came around a bit on Team Levy last week.  I was surprised to learn that no one in the history of the RCLs has ever gone perfecto.  That just goes to show you what a special feat it is, regardless of league competitive index.  We’ve had 117, 118, even 118.5, but never 120.  That’s a lot of teams in a lot of leagues, some of them pretty terrible I’m sure.  We could be witnessing RCL history folks and if it takes a historic achievement to take down a team from a high LCI league, so be it.  Let’s take a look at what else happened in the RCLs this week, in the week that was, week 25:

‘PERTY ‘PERTS

Each week we’ll peek in at our resident ‘perts & other industry names to see who is laying claim to best “expert” RCLer in the land.  We’ll take notes, check the standings and generally stalk them.  Click the heading above to check out the ‘Perts League home page and follow along.

Stop the fight, stop the fight.  With one week to go J-FOH has opened up a commanding lead and even entered the top 20 overall in the Master Standings for good measure.  J-FOH gained 4 points this week, tied with Jay and Yahoo’s Dalton Del Don for most in the league, and now holds an 8.5 point lead over second place.  Sitting in the second spot is Big Magoo and Team McLeod, both tied at 88.  Meanwhile, Grey lost 4 points this week, dropping him to 83 points and well into 4th place.

I had been looking forward to watching this close race the final week, but J-FOH squashed that plan with a big week.  J-FOH barely trickled over the GS limit with 181, but did so in style, benching starters that would have tarnished his 2.16 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in 50 IP.  Those sterling ratios along with 6 wins really shot J-FOH up the standings.  There are still some teams with GS left who can pass J-FOH in Ks but it won’t be enough to bring him down.  Quite an impressive second half run for the hateful one.

On a less positive note, Ralph was this week’s biggest loser, dropping 4.5 points and falling under the 70 point mark for the first time since week 19.  Ralph now sits comfortably in 6th place with JB nipping at his heals.

10 T 1000 RCL 1000 106.3 106 101 105.1

As stated in the intro, Team Levy got back to perfection.  The LCI of All Hail Beddict Tha God fell even lower, down to 98 now.  It’s interesting to note that Team Levy is the only team in the top 25 with an LCI under 100.  That just goes to show the power of perfection.

Cram It is making things interesting, he gained 5.5 points in DFSers Anonymous this week.  That, along with the 106 LCI has him within 3 points of Team Levy.

Backdoor Sliders put up a TOW worthy performance with both his teams this week, but despite that very strong effort, his FCL team still lost ground to the red hot Cram It.  Cram did burn his final 9 GS on Sunday with one of the better 9 GS performances you’ll see all year.  Backdoor Sliders still sits a 179.  That final stat push could make or break Backdoor’s final ranking.

Team Lion fell from 2nd to 4th due to the strong performances by Cram and Sliders while Fatuous Jeffreys fell from 4th to 5th.

Big Magoo stayed put in 6th but Mordecai Brown Baggers jumped up from 10th to 7th.

No jump was as sweet as Up North’s though.  Up North gained 7 points in Mortals vs. Beddict this week to move from 22nd to 8th in the Master Standings.  This isn’t the last we’ll hear about Up North during this update.

Finally, Hoboken Squat Cobblers and T 1000 round out the top 10 as Rock Ridge Express got the bump thanks to Up North’s big week.

MAX STARTS: 188

This loophole might be the most controversial in all the RCLs.  I’ve seen tantrums thrown, swear words used, names called and even people outright quit RCLs over this rule.  I’ve got no issues with it, and I don’t really see why someone would, but I guess some people do.  For those not in the know, ESPN has a 180 GS limit.  HOWEVER, on the day you reach that 180 mark, any additional starters already in your lineup still count.  Hence, if you load up 9 starters in your 9 “P” positions, you can actually achieve 188 Games Started.  This is especially handy if you’re chasing someone in Ks and/or wins.  It can be decidedly less handy if you’re close in ERA/WHIP as it’s very difficult to land 9 starters and end up with below a 3.50 ERA/1.25 WHIP for the day.  Most savvy owners end over the limit by at least 5-6 GS as every counting stat, well, counts.  I’d like to note too, that this loophole also exists in Yahoo! leagues.  Yahoo! has an IP limit, typically of 1400 IP.  However, any and all innings accrued on the day you go over that limit also count towards your total.  I’ve used this to my advantage in Yahoo! standard leagues and Pro Leagues plenty over the years to get every last strikeout and win I could.  So, without further ado, I will direct you to the greatest spot on Razzball.com that you never new existed, the RCL forums.  This is Vin’s download location where he offloads all kinds of great data for you to sift through.  If you’re a numbers nerd *raises hand* then you’ll love this place:

As you can see, Crammy had a great Sunday of streaming his 9 starters combined for 4 wins and very nice ratios of 2.74 and 1.04.  This kid’s good.

I’ve blown my GS in a couple leagues with so-so results.  Avoiding the 5+ ERA is key though.  14 teams have reached 187 GS or more and 5 of them ended with a 5+ ERA day with myself and Kid A right behind with 4.87 and 4.93.  It’s dangerous business, but a pretty fun game of chicken as well.  Make sure to gloat if you have a great day tossing out your final 8 or 9 pitchers.

Vin used a looser tolerance than I did, so if your feelings are hurt I didn’t include your league here, check yourself out in his post.

WEEKLY LEADERS

The best of the best from the week that was.

HR –20 – Backdoor Sliders 2 (Night of the Living Zombinos), Vin and Jackie (Stream or die!) & Up North (Mortals Vs. Beddict)

RBIs – 66 – Backdoor Sliders 2 (Night of the Living Zombinos)

SB – 15 – If You Can’t Stand The Heat (High Heat)

AVG – .391 – Jerk Store (BATTAMANIA)

K – 191 – Vin and FOH Show (FOHs Fantasy Funride)

W – 10 – Up North (Mortals Vs. Beddict)

SV –  14 – Royal Flush (Myers Superfoods)

ERA (Min. 40 IP) – 1.00 – Team Anthony (Baba Booey) (in 45 IP)

WHIP (Min. 40 IP) – 0.687 – HappyLooking VikingDude (Riverboat Fantasy) (in 55.1 IP)

A new record was set in strikeouts this week as Vin tried his darndest to move a team he took over J-FOH up the standings.  He used 37 starts this week and still has 29 GS remaining with a week to go.  “A” for effort Vin.

Jerk Store came within 3 batting average points of beating the batting average record, so close.

Up North had a pretty great week, co-leading in HRs and leading in Wins.  That type of double duty dominance typical deserves TOW declarations!  Dayum!

TEAM OF THE WEEK

Our weekly shout out to the team that killed it the previous week.

Team: Up North

League: Mortals Vs. Beddict

Stats:   H/AB: 86/335, AVG: .257, R: 49, HR: 20, RBI: 51, SB: 4

IP: 125.2, ERA: 2.65, WHIP: 1.00, K: 112, W: 10, SV: 6

Summary: Well, would you look at that, it’s almost like I knew what was coming!  Up North had a great week both offensively and in pitching.  It’s pretty rare to make the weekly leaderboard in both sections.  Up North got nice weeks from Goldy, Trea Turner and Justin Upton as well as a 5 win Sunday thanks to streaming Musgrove, Cotton, Bundy and Gsellman (Osuna chipped in a vulture win as well).  The big week opened up a huge league lead for Up North (16 points) and pushed Up North into the top 10 overall in the Master Standings.  Way to get hot at the right time, it’s starting to get cold at night Up North!

Thanks, Matt! Good job all season (figured I should say that today, in case you blow it next week).

One league I had a 3.5-pt. lead, just missing your cutoff. I lost 4 points in pitching ratios yesterday, though, and now trail by 1.

A team yesterday had 9 SPs and recorded 0 wins. To make matters worse, a RP on the bench picked up a win.

Ha! Thanks Vin, I made this one extra long so I could mail it in next week, good call!

Man, that’s a crazy swing. You think you’ll be able to pass Rudy is Booty? That race looks tight.

What a punch in the gut, 9 starts, no wins.

I’ve got 9 starters going today in DFSers Anonymous and tomorrow in ECFBL, fingers crossed is does me some good.

@MattTruss: RiB actually lost 2.5 yesterday, so he’s only a half point ahead. But, I don’t really see where I can gain. He’s tied in HRs, so there’s the half-point. The only other place he could lose is pitching ratios, but really, he could probably just bench his pitchers and not worry.

JFOH looks like it has it locked up, so big ups to him… I won’t blame Chris Archer, though, well… No, I won’t…

Yea, I mean, anything can happen, but he pushed all the right buttons at the end there. It’s his league to lose at this point.

@MattTruss: thats funny because Grey said I was a poor finisher

    • The Hack says:
      (link)

@Grey: I dont think I have it locked up. If I go cold at the dish or my MR’s get blown up I can lose enough points if others gain. I could sit the relievers and just take the loss in K’s but then that leaves the door open for wins (to you) because my ratios are good and Timmy Mac can pass me in ratios. Lots of moving parts. I have three guys that could conceivably pass me in runs, not likely but a possibility. It aint over til its over! I’m going to play my game and hope for the best.

@Grey: Im going to play it like any normal week, the other day I sat an MR that went 1.2 innings with 3 K’s because the Dodgers had been hot and I kick myself for being too cautious.

@Grey: Rusin, but at least the rest of my squad made up for my doink. All relievers, 8 innings 5 K’s 1 win a zero era and 0.63 whip

I have 8 SPs lined up for today (I had 9 until De Leon got bumped back): Scherzer, Lackey, F-Her, Fiers, Kennedy, Eickhoff, Nolasco, and Matt Moore.
( I could add a 9th to replace De Leon, but it’s *really* slim-pickings and so I think that’s not worth the risk.)
I’m having second thoughts about the whole thing because of the track-record of others doing the SP-binge is giving me pause — most have turned out much worse than I would have guessed, and I could easily slip in both ERA and WHIP.
But then again, I suppose there’s no real difference between finishing 3rd overall and 30th — all that matters is the trophy, right? So, here goes nothing!

    • VinWins

      VinWins says:
      (link)

@The Big Yabu: Looks like you have a pretty good lineup for tonight. Never know, though. Sunday turned out to be a pretty good day, with names like Cotton, Richard, Tomlin, Anderson, Gsellman, Rodriguez, and Pineda. Good luck!

Just curious, who would you choose as your 9th starter from what’s left? Too bad (maybe) Verlander is on waivers til tomorrow.

      • The Big Yabu says:
        (link)

@VinWins: I was giving serious consideration to 3 guys:
Gausman — obviously the most talent, but pitching at Toronto is scary and maybe he’s still hurt
Koehler — the Mets have been weak offensively and it’s a great pitchers’ park, but he’s not…y’know…good and going against Syndergaard makes a W less likely
Mengden — strictly about the opponent (LAA) and insurance for Nolasco

If Verlander were available, I’d roll with him in a heartbeat. Picking from those others, I really don’t know… I guess I’d lean towards gambling on Gausman’s upside, since this whole thing is a gamble for me…

        • The Big Yabu says:
          (link)

@The Big Yabu: Just talked myself into picking up Gausman, but I could easily change my mind again before the games start and swap him out for a hitter.

    • MattTruss

      MattTruss says:
      (link)

Word, it’s risk/reward man, take Cram It as your inspiration and go for it. If you’re not first you’re last anyway. I’m busting my 9 SPs in DFSers Anonymous tonight too, Scherzer, Lackey, Fiers, Kennedy, Eickhoff, Nolasco, Moore, Gausman and Teheran. Gausman is the only one that gives me pause. Well, Matt Moore too, since he’s prone to getting obliterated. I’m trusting the SON on that one. Good luck, I’ll be watching and rooting for many the same games as you tonight.

      • The Big Yabu says:
        (link)

        @MattTruss: Thanks!

One of the weird things here is that I’m already 3rd overall in Ks and 2nd overall in Ws — so what would make the most difference for me is lowering my ratios, not padding my counting-stats. (#humblebrag) But the basic logic still applies: may as well gamble!
And I suppose it could also help me by nudging up the LCI.

        Plus, it’s fun to gamble!

    • Cram It says:
      (link)

@The Big Yabu: Go for it dude! Like I say, if you ain’t first, you’re last. I don’t care if I finish second, or third, behind you. Someone needs to take down that perfect score.

It does, I’ll likely bust out a recap next week with all the top weekly winners, but here’s a refresher of the week that was week 20 for Ralph:

      H/AB: 119/322, AVG: .370, R: 66, HR: 22, RBI: 64, SB: 11

Monsters of Butt Rock need to kick themselves in the butt and get to the top of that three team race in Fountains of Ralph. A first place finish looks much nicer on the fridge.

            Ralph Lifshitz says:
            (link)

@MattTruss: Yeah MOB needs to get in gear. Probably is I have a ton of starts left, but am already maxed out in terms of K’s and W’s. I need gains in the power and speed departments. Those standings have flipped everyday for the last week, very close three team race.

That huge week 20, put me in the driver’s seat in Myer’s Superfoods and I never looked back, it’s not a good league though. So I’ll win Myers, but it would be nice to win Fountains of Ralph as well.
