This week Donkey Teeth and I (totally normally sentence) talk about how awesome it was that so many people signed up for the Razzball Patreon show, and I get an absolutely bonkers good idea. Seemingly, at the moment the podcast airs I realize that once the season starts, I can start putting up the roundups and Buy/Sell columns early on the Patreon page, so people can get them, and the advice they contain, hours or even a day before everyone else gets them. Then, we talk about the NFBC Best Ball league we were roped…bamboozled…C’mon, thesaurus, hoodwinked into by a bunch of Razzball commenters, and how the league is, being polite, set up in an interesting way. Also, because I am absolutely mystified about all things to do with Repulsive Giant Baby, we discuss that for far longer than anyone could/would imagine. What’s that, you don’t know RGB? You thought RGB was Roy G. Biv? Don’t be silly! I have a tweet for you:

Then, when the podcast literally can’t get better, it manages to take a turn for the sublime when we talk about the Titans’ NFL Draft War Room and how there might be not one, but two future Joe Exotic husbands there.

Finally, (this is not in order), we talk about the Michael Jordan documentary, The Last Dance, and Donkey Teeth has a firsthand encounter with Scottie Pippen. We appreciate everyone who has signed for the show already — it really helps! And everyone who signed up for our ad-free membership. You guys are literally the best. I’d hug ya, but then we’d both get The Rona and that would be it for both of us. Again, here’s the ad-free subscription for $9.99, which helps big-time. To sign up to our show, go here:

    Grey!

Looks like you have a lot of comments today! Will keep this one short so you can get to them all… haha.

What a show! Have to say, you were starting to lose me a bit in the middle there, but all good, I enjoyed it.

lol on the Donkey sentence above. Donk did a really good job this time (not that he didn’t last time)! Pretty funny on the “aggressive” question—at least I got a kick out of it.

All good on the queue lol… but still a bit surprised you don’t fill it up for the first few rounds. Maybe because you did not care about this dumb $25 league, which is totally reasonable. I just do that out of habit for slow drafts, in case the EMT needs to come and take me out!

I feel you on the best ball swindle / Razzslam thing, but c’mon, literally takes 1-2mins to read the rules! I didn’t know about the limited starting lineup until after I signed up either.

Finally, not that this matters at all, but Donk really should’ve engaged you more on how it feels like we’re watching period pieces when watching anything on TV now. A THOUSAND PERCENT, YES. I literally was saying the same thing yesterday when my gf was watching that dumb show, ‘Too Hot to Handle’. “Looks like they aren’t practicing social distancing!” ; “Remember going to the beach and hanging out with friends?!?” ; “When’s the last time you saw your friends?” ; “This is getting depressing.” Moving on!

Really liked the Patreon ideas you had at the start. That is if we ever get a season by the year 2027—it would be a lovely idea. Bet you can get a lot of people to sign up for that. I’d definitely keep it up. At first, really thought you were going the *other way* with that comment. i.e. That the Patreon would be dead in the water once the szn starts.

If you do release posts overnight, just post them at a somewhat reasonable hour for us over on the east coast!

What was the name of the documentary on the college athletes getting paid? Want to check that out.

    Thanks guys!

Oh, and I don’t feel swindled, just saying it’s like Razzslam like RCL and NFBC Draft Champions are like each other…They’re both 5×5, but other than that, they’re not similar whatsoever

        Obviously I 100% agree.

But if this is what gets some more ppl into fantasy baseball, then sure, fine, I guess…

This format screams: Low IQ Fantasy Football

Honestly, I don’t know what the strategy is for this format…Any ideas?

          • baby seal says:
            (link)

I mean, I’m far from an expert obviously, but at least I executed my plan

Heavy bats up front since there are limited starting spots. Get 1-2 backups at each. Invest heavy in catcher since there are literally 7 starting hitting spots (LOL), so you don’t want to punt that, I don’t think

A few high-end OF with a bunch of volume later

Catch up on pitching by going heavy on that after right after pounding hitting

Try to compete in pitching w/ volume — just need 4 good performances from 12 guys per week

Get 3-4 closers, since they can have random big weeks

Target IP, Ws and Ks for the SP

As draft goes on, for both batters and starters, start to think about guys w/ heavy splits. Take advantage of the wonky ADP

You’re lacking some power, IMO. Which hurts your upside, I think, but again, these are just educated guesses. Your power is uncharacteristically weak AF, if I’m being honest. Was a bit shocked you took Newman over Biggio.

Lynn was a great pick — really wanted him. On the flip side, your pitching is very good. Might be too good though, since again, you only start the best 4 each week.

If I were you, I might’ve tried to catch up in hitting more from 100-200 after the first part of the draft didn’t go as planned.

            That’s my 2 cents!

            • Grey

              Grey says:
              (link)

Hmm…I don’t know…Razzslam scoring (if that’s what this actually is and I have to be honest I don’t know if it is) tilts towards well-rounded vs. power bats…Newman is better than Biggio in that format…Power and bad average hurts in Razzslam…If I’m being honest tho, I’m totally freewheeling bc I don’t know how it’s going to work out with such small rosters…I only need one good bat at some of these positions

              • baby seal says:
                (link)

You want a mix of both — the better BA guys will give you that higher floor to avoid dud weeks — the HR guys can give you those massive weeks that the others cannot.

Just looking at total points at the end of the year isn’t the right way to think about the weekly distribution, IMO. The limited starting spots invites randomness, too.

You got those higher floor types later w/ like an Alberto — Biggio would’ve been your random guy going in and out of the lineup when he gets hot or cold… I don’t love him either, just thought that was a good fit for your team at the time.

Yep that was the Verlander + Rendon one for 2nd and 3rd round. Honestly you guys were pretty nice about this one the pod, expected more of a roasting than that!! I’m roasting your roast!

And I appreciate you guys jumping into that league to fill it up. Though, to be fair to me (your humble commish!) I was asked about *SCORING* !! Which is exactly the same as Razzslam…

…but yes I could see how maybe, just maybe, it would have been helpful to know that there is only 2 OF and 4 Pitcher slots ahead of time.

‘Baseball is my life, the only thing I know and can talk about. My only interest.’

Rogers Hornsby, Sr…aka The Rajah. The best National League hitter of the 1920s, Hornsby’s career .358 BA is second only to Ty Cobb’s .367 lifetime BA. Hornsby also won the Triple Crown twice in his career – in 1922 (when he had 450 total bases which continues to be the National League record) with 42 HRs, a .401 BA and 152 RBIs and in 1925 with 39 HRs, a .403 BA and 143 RBIs.

LOL @ Repulsive Giant Baby tag…

This MJ Docuseries is amazing. Did you watch the after show with Jalen and Jacoby this week? They talked with the filmmaker about what it was like to interview Rodman and Phil. Very interesting, haha. Rodman showed up 2 hrs late and before starting interview he asked for a Tuna melt from Subway and Camomile tea, then gave him 3.5 hours! Said it was hard to keep him on topic, kept wanting to meander into discussing North Korea and Kim. LOL.

As i tweeted, crazy that the potential top 4 of Dodgers lineup are in top 20 of wRC+ (more reason to be in on Muncy)… and the only other team to have 3 is the Astros (Springer, Altuve, Bregman) and now the Twins have 2 by adding Donaldson.

Awesome series. Forgot just how ridiculously awesome, Michael was. Krause just a little scumbag. Reinsdorf should have helped out Pippen. 8 years $17 mil. was armed robbery. Scottie had 11 siblings and 2 of his family in wheel chairs.
Shocking reveal, 1 of the 2-3 greatest athletes ever has an ego. Yeah, I put Jim Brown in the top 3, though Michael had a lengthlier career.

Here’s a fun stat: Pippen career NBA earnings $109M, MJ career NBA earnings $93M… long term via NBA he got more than Jordan… but all those endorsements etc… hot damn.

Andrew – I’ve drafted Muncy on several teams taking him in the 60s… Hitting behind Betts is going to be insane (wish it was a full year)… if it wasn’t for his hand getting broken he would have had a 100/40/100+ season. And he covers all infield except SS.

    • baby seal says:
      (link)

This is why I think Turner is a bargain this year, and without the full szn, the age / injury risk doesn’t worry me as much

I had Muncy last year as a target and was a good own. Pickup the year before that. Own in some best balls and points, where he’s amazing there.

I have a hard time getting around the AVG sink in the top-100. Just a draft philosophy thing that’s always treated me well

I also think there’s more playing time risk than before. I wouldn’t be overly worried, but enough yellow flags for me to pass in Roto this year.

He’s very streaky. There’s a non-zero chance Lux is hot and he’s not, then suddenly isn’t getting 90% of the PAs like before, and possible even loses his lineup spot. Again, not overly worried due to his high OBP.

But also again, not something I want to deal with where he’s going.

                (link)

I think he’s a good player w/ 30 HR power. My issue was always the lack of an injury discount — which is now fully baked in the price — and maybe even has gone too far now, especially w/ SS so deep

Similar to Dahl last year or Stanton this year. I like them as players for the most part

I’ll take “injury risks” where the price makes sense, but I don’t want to take someone and have my first thought be, “God, I hope this guy doesn’t get injured again, because I could win my league if not” — those are usually the guys who just keep getting injured

Compared to today’s basketball, yeah they did – but back then, they pushed the envelope in physical D – and wasn’t considered dirty… This type of physical D was basketball in the 90s – In Reggie Miller’s 30 on 30 that aired like 10 years ago, they were very open about putting people on their backs if they ever came into the paint

It’s surprising more Ds didn’t do this then, right?

It’s not just a strategy thing, you also have to be athletic enough to keep up, and have the mindset to not back down, not give a F, etc.

                Easier said than done.

Today’s basketball , much like the NFL, is a no contact sport.
Jordan would average more than Wilt’s 50 p.p.g.

Haha. Dirty a huge understatement. Have you watched the 1st 4 episodes ? The book Jordan Rules ? When he entered the lane they knocked him to the ground. Every time. Was clearly shown in episode 2 or 3.

ahhh… so good. 3 highlights importance of Rodman and his background, and 4 highlights Phil. We will absolutely have to talk about Rodman tomorrow LOL, there’s so much to write about him alone that is Razzball quality. Podcast content no doubt, especially the “Vegas Vacation”.

Can you imagine if Jordan played in today’s game and the franchise wanted to give him “rest days”???? He’d probably punch someone for saying that… his mentality was so relentless – I love the stories from players saying how Jordan would go up to them before the game and basically tell them to “get ready”

Has there been movement in your rankings based on the shortened season? I ask because I have a cheat sheet I printed out in March and wonder if I should get the updated rankings for my upcoming draft. Thank Grey.

    Grey,

I’ve watched the first four seasons of Curb Your Enthusiasm but I got sidetracked a couple years ago and never finished it. I’ve actually got all 9 seasons on DVD. Since you’ve apparently seen it all the way through, should I finish it?

By the way, if you’d like to watch something pretty funny and dark, watch Dead Like Me. There’s only two seasons but it’s really an interesting take on life and life after death. It was on ShowTime and had gotten great reviews before a new CEO axed it in a makeover of their content. It has a die-hard following and you might enjoy it.

    • Grey

      Grey says:

Do you find yorbrough interesting past 2020? thinking of trading ryu and buying yorbrough for much cheaper. thinking it may gain me value.

    Do you find them interchangable?
