We’re back for more with The Razzball Baseball Pod, and on today’s show we introduce the world to Grey’s true love.  No, not Cougars, but close!  We then dive into Grey’s OF ranks, where we hotly debate the difference between teammates Andrew McCutchen and Starling Marte, Grey’s hatred of A.J. Pollock, and an absolute love for Gregory Polanco.  So many Pirates in the outfield!  We also go through a few sleepers we like, then talk closers and strategy for building your bullpen.  Here’s our latest edition of the Razzball Baseball Podcast:

Very excited for your pitcher profiles, JB! What do you think this year (and going forward) about Mr. Carlos Rodon? Supergreen?

I’m trying to get him super-well priced in my keeper league (only $3), wondering how aggressively to push.

He really seems like the kind of guy who could quickly be ace-like if he can just sustain the control improvements he made throughout the second half last year…

@Duda Want to Build a Snowman?: Thanks man! YESSSSS I have Rodon higher than anyone, I lovvvvve his stuff, BB rate improvements, and huge finish last yr. Exactly what you said! I got so excited I didn’t get to the end of the comment haha. Push very aggressive!

@JB Gilpin: Nice! Curious what you think about this keeper trade offer I received (Grey didn’t like it too much, but it sounds like you feel about Rodon how I do!).

        My $16 Frazier – His $3 Rodon, $4 Buxton, $8 Corbin

I’d keep trying to work some trades after this, but if things stayed as they were, my keepers would be: $25 Abreu, $25 Betts, $20 Blackmon, $14 Hosmer, $16 Strasburg, plus Rodon and Buxton.

I also have a $14 Darvish, who would fall to free agency auction if I couldn’t swing another trade. I like Darvish a lot, but not sure that his open auction price would be THAT much worse (if at all). (Our host site, CBS, has him at $12).

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

@Duda Want to Build a Snowman?: Whoa, Grey didn’t like that?! In a keeper, that’s huge, $4 Buxton?! With upside to be a top-15 or top-10 OF down the road? Is there inflation on costs or are they locked in? That could change my thoughts a little, but I like it

          • Duda Want to Build a Snowman? says:
            (link)

@JB Gilpin: very minor inflation. Keeper salaries increase by $3 every year, but you can keep forever. Still lurve it?

I just feel like Frazier is getting old, don’t really believe the steals or average and, at best, has another 2 strong years of that in him…

Although I don’t like the idea of losing Darvish to keep Rodon and Buxton, I think his market salary prob stays in that same $14 range, give or take.

        • Duda Want to Build a Snowman? says:
          (link)

@Duda Want to Build a Snowman?: I should also say, in addition to hearing what you think about that trade, there’s another Frazier trade involving young pitching that I can take…

Frazier ($16) for Makeil Franco ($8) and R. Iglesias ($4)

          • JB Gilpin

            JB Gilpin says:
            (link)

@Duda Want to Build a Snowman?: Ummmm, maybe out of lurve and just a strong like :) I know you wanna win now, but yeah as you mention, $19 Frazier next year might be overpriced. I like Iglesias, but he’s no Rodon. On the flip side though, Franco at $8 is awesome. I like them both, I think Franco one helps a little more now while just as bright for the future

            • Duda Want to Build a Snowman? says:
              (link)

@JB Gilpin: thanks a lot! That’s sort of where I’ve been too. I think I’m taking the Buxton trade – I like the idea of having 2 super cheap potential studs to balance out my strong but only slightly well priced other keepers. Plus it gives me some extra $$$ to muscle out and pay that extra dollar or tw for the free agent guys I really love.

I should have also mentioned that the top 5 finishers are in the money, so there’s sort of an inventive built in for people trying to win while also holding some building blocks.

Next year, my to-be $23 Blackmon is probably going to be a little pricey – could be nice to ideally replace him with Bux next year.

Plus, that Rodon deliciousness is too tasty to ignore!

      • Kiss a bum says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin: with Rodon, are you worried about the white sox’ poor defense and the lose of Tyler flowers who I’ve read is a great framer? Apparently his new catchers are not good. Thx!

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

@Kiss a bum: A little, more the Flowers thing, I’ve heard that detraction as well. But I think his control improvement will supercede any loss of framing

Being a Brewers fan you’ll appreciate this. Local question of the day on ESPN Wiscosnin radio, what will be higher by opening day of Packers training camp? Chris Carters batting average or Eddie Lacys reporting weight.

@The great knoche: Hahahaha, gimme Carter’s AVG! .240 to 238 lbs hahaha

      • The Great Knoche says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin: The consensus on the radio was that Eddie would win. Lacy 230, Carter .219 They figured neither of them could hit the 220s

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

@The Great Knoche: Hahahaha definitely not Lacy, that’s for sure! Wow, Carter didn’t even top .230 in 2014 with that huge 2nd half, I mighta gone the wrong way… :)

@Goldschmidt: Very soon! In the 60s-70s now with some tinkering still to do, it’s been a big undertaking!

  6. paul says:

In a 14 team keeper league and debating a trade for another keeper.

I can trade Pollock with my 11th round pick and get Rizzo with my 4th round pick? Do I make the trade for Rizzo. Lots of top players this year are being kept. leaving me likely with Marte or Edwin with my 1st round pick

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@paul: Hmmmm, is there keeper inflation? Pollock at 11 even if there’s like a 3 round penalty every year will be kept a few years, although Rizzo in the 1st might end up being fine… Yeah even though I don’t see the dropoff Grey does, I’ll take Rizzo

      • Paul says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin: I wouldn’t be able to keep Rizzo the next year (2017) but could keep pollock in the Rd of average his draft rd in 2017 and the 11th. So if pollock is a 3rd in 2017 I could draft him in the 7th

I was starting to lean Rizzo

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

@Paul: Gotcha, so it’s a Rizzo rental for a cheaper Pollock who might be a keeper one additional year…Man it’s close, I guess I probably would unless the rest of your keeper mix already had a lot of nice power

          • Paul says:
            (link)

            @JB Gilpin: super helpful! Thanks!

Only one other keeper Arenado in the 3rd. I think I can find similar players to Pollock like a springer or marte

            • JB Gilpin

              JB Gilpin says:
              (link)

@Paul: Ah yeah with only 1 other keeper and sounds like limited carry over most of the time, I take Rizzo too.

@SheriffMcRawDawg: Hah trust me, double-digit hours have been put into the SP ranks! I’m somewhere in the 70s. Probably early next week.

Unfortunately JFOH isn’t gonna be able to commit to commishing now. Yo, you wanna commish?! Haha. [email protected] has asked too but seems iffy

JB, give me you insite on Iglesias from the Reds? Everything i am reading so far this guy sounds magical. What the expections? CBS has in 200+ strikeouts…

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@los: I’m a little less bullish, in my ranks (still subject to change), I have him at 37th in SP. I’m a little worried his low arm slot might have gotten a few extra Ks due to deception, and there was no scouting on him really since he came from Cuba. 200 seems a little too bold, I think he’ll be solid though

I can keep 3 players, losing rounds 1, 2, and 3 for this year. Mostly everyone keeps 3. I can keep them for as long as I want to send them back. Who do you like?

    Abreu
    Batista
    Machado
    McCutcheon
    Polanco
    Sano
    Seager

    Thanks

    • JB Gilpin

@Ben: Machado is def a lock. I kinda wanna take Abreu and McCutch, Bautista is close, but those would be my 3
