Grey and the crew are back from the desert, and ready to give us the lowdown on Spring Training performances!  Unfortunately, it sounds like Grey didn’t see anyone too good, except we do get a nice under-the-radar sleeper at OF.  We then talk the Brett Anderson injury and the impact on the Dodgers rotation, Aroldis Chapman‘s suspension, and some sneaky speed that was just signed in ChiTown.  We did too much agreeing on this podcast, I need to get Grey fired up again next show!  Commenters – let me know if Grey ever got irked at any of your comments to him, and I’m going to fuel the fire!  Here’s our latest edition of the Razzball Baseball Podcast:

    Pronunciation: AH-LED-MEES Diaz.

July 19-November 21 with AA Springfield, AAA Memphis, and Arizona Fall League — Diaz hit .333/.401/.592 with 12 homers, 21 doubles, and 37 RBI. Good for a 169 wRC+and only struck out 34 times in 228 at-bats. Small sample, sure. He also took 2 full years off from baseball while defecting from Cuba and wasn’t fully healthy until mid 2015. Not saying he will ever pan out, but he’s better than “garbage”

@Jensen: Interesting, thanks for letting us know haha. We’re awful with player names… Grey was more the hater than me! I think Gyorko plays more

      • Jensen says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin: Deff agree Gyorko plays more, they always wanted him to get AB’s at 2B, SS, 3B to give all those guys rest. But Gyorko also can’t hit righty’s and is better off as a platoon so if Diaz or Greg Garcia have success in spring I can see a lot of split time at SS. Diaz might not play at all if Peralta comes back in June and is healthy. But, he has potential beyond what his minor league numbers have shown thus far.

@Jensen: Yeah Gyorko’s bat is a liability at times for sure… I’ll keep an eye on Diaz!

@JB Gilpin: Diaz had four hits yesterday! SLEEPER!!! (I’m joking but hoping)

JP Crawford or Arcia in a keep forever league at Ss? Or should I ask prospect Mike? Or will that fuel a Phillies versus Brewers bias? Keep up the great work!!!

    • JB Gilpin

@seph meier: Whewwwwwwwwwww. Haha yeah all sorts of bias from us two! I am gonna lean Arcia I think he could have a smidge more power upside.

Who would you prefer at CI in an OBP league: Pedro Alvarez, Chris Carter or Yasmany Tomas?

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:

@The Fridge: Not huge on Alvarez, in AVG leagues I’d def do Tomas… Yeesh but I think Brewers bias has me wanting Carter for an OBP!

Would post in your other pitching thread, but hey you aren’t gonna look at that anymore are you!

Still managed to get E-Rod in my slow draft and that gives me a sick staff of K guys for a 15 teamer:
Cole, Salazar, Ventura, Ross, Gausman, E-Rod.

Talk about a team of flamethrowers!

It’s a crazy league this I’ve joined for the first time, non-keeper, draft 50(!) players and no trades throughout the year. Therefore still gotta draft some more pitching depth right? Jungman(!), R Ray,Mauerer (does that mean really hittable?) and Eickhoff still on the board.

@Swfcdan: Oh I see everyyyyyyyyyything man! Haha.

Nice! Sexy upside! Wow, odd format. Yeah def could use more depth, those last 3 really excite me, Jungmann I’m a little worried about. Maurer wasn’t great today, wish I had watched it, I might try and see if theres an archive

JBizzle I’ve spammed everyone else here – what are your thoughts:

12 team (5 OF, CI, MI, U, etc.), standard roto, keep 8 in the round drafted in for up to 4 years. this is my current squad

    1b – Chris Davis (18)
    Of – Nelson Cruz (6)
    OF – Lorenzo Cain (21)
    Bn – Gallo (19)

    P – Keuchel (10)
    P – Hamels (4)
    P – Walker (17)
    RP – Familia (25)

I have the 2nd overall pick this year, and the best 5 players are Kershaw, Donaldson, Giancarlo (whom I love), McCutcheon and Altuve.

Who do you think I should take? I think it’s doubtful the first picker takes Kershaw, and I think he’ll take Donaldson (whom I should probably pray falls to me, as the next group of 3B is: Carpenter, Beltre, Seager, and Longoria)

I’ve been thinking Giancarlo all the way, but the more I do, I don’t love starting that heavy in OF. I think my pitching is off to a good start, so Kershaw isn’t essential. Would you think of taking Altuve there (next ‘best’ 2nd basemen are Cano, Kinsler, Zobrist, Walker, etc. – no odor, no ANYTHING).

If you’d advise going with Giancarlo with the 2nd pick, which 3B would you aim for of the 4 listed (I had thought of Longoria but I’m not sure if you like him….)

    Thanks man!

@SheriffMcRawDawg: Haha, ummmm yeah Donaldson is prob my #1. Kershaw is prob my #2. I like Keuchel but think one more ace would be worth it. I worry Stanton and a little AVG risk might have you really light there.

Of those you listed, I actually could see Beltre being OK again, but would need to fall far enough

      Hope that’s helpful!

      • SheriffMcRawDawg says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin: thanks man I’ll definitely give Kershaw some thought, esp with Giancarlo’s knee hurting already..

Also in the same leagues- which bounce backs would you recommend I target for a discount and potentially keep (who would provide big value over the next 4 seasons in the same draft slot)? thinking Darvish, Stroman, Devon Travis, maybe Lucroy (it’s 2 catcher)?

and who do you like best for the next 4 yrs (Max contract in this league) (pick a couple bats and arms to target if not more) Of: Orlando Arcia, JP Crawford, Turner, Story, AJ Reed, Mazara, Josh bell, Giolito, Glasnow, Berrios, Snell

        Thanks again man!

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

@SheriffMcRawDawg: Yeahhhh I think it might just be overblown news lull in early spring with that knee, but certainly isn’t a good thing.

I’m not aggressively getting Darvish, I like Stroman a ton. I think Luc will be solid to.

I’m slanted towards pitchers as it is, but Giolitto and Glasnow stand out to me. Lots of SS, I kinda like Story if anything due to Coors haha. Love Arcia too, but thats some home town bias!

@JB Gilpin: I bought the souvenir cup at the stadium so we would have something to send you but it turns out they don’t even say brewers on the cup……It’s a throwback pilots cup!

@J-FOH: @Grey: A Pilots throwback cup?!?!?!? Dude I would love that! One time last year when I played bar trivia, one of the tough final questions was what current MLB team played one yeah as the Seattle Pilots and only our team got it haha

Did great say Chapman would lose 12 saves over 30 day suspension??

So he averages 72 saves a season?

    #Math

I agree with u jb. Chapman doesn’t lose as much value as it seems. I bet he still finishes in the top 5 for closers.

If you get 7 saves every 30 calender days during the baseball season u would get 42 saves.

    • the swinging says:

@the swinging: did Grey*** say…. thank you auto correct…

        JB Gilpin says:
        (link)

@the swinging: Yeah I actually went back and listened to that and I should’ve fought harder on this numbers for sure! A 12 save month would be ridiculous. If Chapman is there at like 90 in any of my drafts, I’m not gonna be able to pass…

    1) How. DARE. You. Cable Guy is two thirds of a great movie.

    2) Something not obvious that I would like to see or hear, via post or discussion on the ‘cast, is the subject of relievers to draft that aren’t closers but will help you in K’s, era, and whip, and might gather a handful of saves as well. I was targeting Capps in every draft for that purpose (knowing he could take the closer role as well), but now I really only know of Siegrist and Betances who fit that bill. Who else?!

    • JB Gilpin

@Hugman: 1. Hah I haven’t seen it in a while, but I always remember the scene where Broderick eats like cereal and Carey is like, “of course they were prostitutes!”

      2. Hmmm great question! I think if Will Smith doesn’t outright win the closer role, he should be in consideration. Jepsen maybe. We’ll discuss more on next pod!
