Wooooo, it’s good to be back!  I’ve missed Grey’s laugh like you wouldn’t believe, and on today’s show we talk the James Shields‘ trade, solid pitching from Matt Shoemaker and Michael Fulmer, and how hot Jonathan Villar has been.  Don’t get Grey and Rudy’s engines revved about ESPN player rater value with the overemphasis of steals!  We also talk Joe Ross (obviously!), where Yu Darvish ranks ROS, and our thoughts on Julio Urias.  Now with more techno music!  Here’s our latest edition of the Razzball Baseball Podcast:

    Hi BJ,

I meant to post this in your Top 100 pitchers post yesterday, but didn’t have time yesterday.

Im in a 16 team H2H format and in first place by a mile, but my pitching besides having JFO, Arrieta, DeGrom my staff seems very thin…
    SP Jake Arrieta
    SP Jacob deGrom
    SP Jose Fernandez
    SP Matt Andriese
    Bench Kevin Gausman
    Bench James Paxton,
    Bench Dan Straily
    Bench Tyler Duffey
    Bench Yadier Alvarez
    Bench Archie Bradley
    DL Tyson Ross*

I lead the league in every offensive category, but I was offered the following proposal..

I get Jimmy Nelson and send Domingo Santana and Yadier Alvarez . I am not sure what to do? Status Quo or take it?

@DanTheMetFan: No worries! Hah well with those 3, you can have a thin pitching staff, especially in a 16er!

Ummmm, yeah I think I would take Nelson, I’m not huge on him, but that’s not giving up very much either

Thanks JB for replying and very sorry I don’t know why I typed BJ in my post… maybe I am dyslexic?

United lost my bags last year coming home from Miami. Such a long story. Happens to everyone, i know, but we don’t fly United anymore. Noticed the word “lost”. Not misplaced, then returned at a later time. At least a little sympathy would have been nice. I was laughed at by customer service. Not cool United.

@knucks: Wowwwwwwww. Yeah I would lose my shizz if that happened to me. United sucks

@JB Gilpin: If Joe Ross gets club tunes, I think the iFetch music is perfect for Bartolo rounding the bases. Just magical.

    Welcome back, JB! Great podcast!

Alaska sounds like it was fantastic. I think the iFetch people need to give you some cash for that exposure. Great stuff! And Grey walked right into the gong at the end as well. Everyone listening knew it was coming *except* poor Grey!

Quick Q if I may. You picked a good time to get away from Drew Smyly — he’s been awful and reports are his velocity is down. Think he rebounds? And will Duffy stick in KC? 9 Ks @Bal last night. Would you take Duffy over Smyly or Ventura? Thanks!

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@JakeTPE: Thanks man, appreciate that! Hah yeah Alaska was awesome, just great wilderness. Hah poor Grey and the Gong… :(

Ummm, yeah Smyly is concerning given the injury issues, but he still has so much upside. I’d prob keep him first, even though might bench him next start or two. Then yeah, def taking Duffy short term over Ventura, I might rank it ROS that way too by next week, even though I have some Duffy concerns that he sticks in the rotation all yr (injuries/they seemed to not like him as a Sp/etc)

      • JakeTPE says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin: Thanks for the feedback! Ventura’s first inning last night was the last straw for me. He can go have a low K rate and near 5.00 ERA and get into scraps on someone else’s roster. Picked up Paxton so we’ll see if he’s for real and will continue to cyclops Duffy. Have a good week, JB sir!

          (link)

@JakeTPE: Yeah Ventura is so hard to cheer for. What a bum. Oh nice, yeah the Paxton buzz is certainly building again!

Would love your thoughts on a trade I’m being offered, but first some context. I’m in contention – just dropped out of first and we’ve got a lead on third. Problem is I’m taking on water. I’ve recently lost Sano, Pence, and now Soler (maybe). My pitching has been pretty bad outside of Scherzer/Salazar/Kluber. I lost Moustakas so I’m forced to start Frazier and one of Dietrich or Prado as my second 3B. And one owner is trying to get Rizzo off of me in this roto league where we only keep 4 hitters.

He’s looking for Rizzo, Berrios, and a throw-in or two for Belt (or A-Gon), Longoria, Carrasco, and Conforto.

Any thoughts are appreciated. I hate trading Rizzo, but I also hate watching my team fade in the standings while my injured players kill me. Players available on waivers are awful (i.e. Chisenhall may be the best OF available). I was thinking of trying to get Piscotty instead of Conforto, but my league is also quite void-happy when it comes to complicated trades.

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Skeezix: Ugh yeah the Soler one didn’t look great.

Hmmmm, how many teams in the league? Seems pretty deep with such full rosters anyway. Agree it sucks giving up Rizzo, but that’s a pretty epic haul, especially since it fits your needs. What would your 4 hitter-keepers be if you took it?

      • Skeezix says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin: It’s a 10-teamer, but our rosters are 40 deep. We keep 4 hitters (mine currently are Rizzo, Frazier, Bautista, Pence – I mortgaged the future last year to win the title) and 2 pitchers (Kluber, Scherzer), as well as 3 prospects (only Berrios and Phillips left).

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

@Skeezix: Yeah I kinda figured your numbers would be something like that… Well Conforto I think might turn into a keeper at least… Banners fly forever and thats a ton of depth to get in a league with that many roster spots, I’m kinda leaning taking it. And I’d def take Belt over A Gon

          • Skeezix says:
            (link)

@JB Gilpin: The same guy also has Piscotty – would you rather have him over Conforto? The problem there is my league is void-happy as it is, and given how much Conforto has been slumping that could be tricky. I have options to replace Pence as a keeper with Polanco, and Hosmer can replace Rizzo. They’re not world-beater keeper replacements, but they’re not total scrubs.

            • JB Gilpin

              JB Gilpin says:
              (link)

@Skeezix: Nahhhhh I think I’d rather Conforto – I think he has more upside. Void-happy? You mean veto-happy?

Oh wow! Yeah your keepers are fine then. I still think getting the depth is worth it tho

              • Skeezix says:
                (link)

@JB Gilpin: Yes I mean veto-happy. Difficult to get big trades through when it’s a bottom-feeder trading with a leader given the keeper dynamics. That and we’re all mostly jerks to each other. Thanks so much for the feedback JB, keep up the great work, and I love the podcast (though admittedly I haven’t listed to this one yet)!

@Skeezix: Hah ok cool, just was being sure. Yeah I don’t play in veto leagues any more, it’s just too frustrating. Definitely not in ones with blind votes, bc then people just veto any deal 1st or 2nd makes. Appreciate that man, thanks for listening!

  5. Milarky says:
    (link)

Hey JB, what do you think about Hill vs. Salazar for the rest of this season? I’ve got a guy looking to get Salazar from me so that it could also result in an upgrade or two at other positions (i.e. replace Lawrie with Murphy at 2B, replace Dietrich with Lamb at 3B, possibly add Joc to my OF since I’ve recently lost Sano and Pence).

He’s also offering various packages that instead of Hill would net me Gio, Nelson or Sheilds but I’m not sure any of those guys excite me. Thoughts on whether any are worth considering given that I’m in contention but my pitching is already a bit of a concern?

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Milarky: Rich Hill? Deffffffff taking Salazar there – too much oldness/injury risk. And yeah, not lowering the SP return to those guys.

Although I do buy Murphy… If you got Murphy and Hill for Salazar… Hmmm I might do that one

      • Milarky says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin: Agree with your first point, expecially on the dropoff to the other guys. Might be too risky for Hill. On the second point, it’s tempting but I don’t know if my pitching is strong enough to take the risk on Hill dying at any moment even with the upgrade to Murphy. You really think Murphy is the real deal this year? Is this really a late breakout vs. a prolonged hot/power streak?

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

@Milarky: Yeah, a Hill death is certainly a possibility. If pitching is more the team concern than hitting, yeah I would probably hold off. There was reports he changed his swing and approach post ASB last year – Rudy really sold me on him. I do think he can hit like .300 ROS with good power still

JB– right now in my 10 team H2H points keeper league I’m in an odd situation.

My team is good but record isn’t great, i want to move Jose Abreu for a win now piece for my rotation. Would you do Jose ABreu (kept in the 13th) for Price (kept in the 2nd)? probably wouldn’t keep Price after this season.

Abreu is my utility and right now i have Beltre as abreus replacement if i trade him. Justin Upton also on the bench.

My rotation as it stands is Degrom, Lester, Nola, Shark, Odorizi and Teheran.

  10. Hey! Thanks for answering my question about Wheeler (even though I dropped him a week ago to stash Ryu – since dropped – and use a DL slot for an actual player on my team)!

Also, I have a quick Seatgeek testimonial for you! With the wife and kid out of town, I took advantage and decided to visit Angel Stadium for the first time since I moved to the LA area, 17 years ago. So I decided to try Seatgeek. I Checked Stubhub and Seatgeek and found basically the same seat for about ten bucks cheaper on Seatgeek. I got a fourth row seat out near the left field foul pole for 34 bucks. A nice vantage point for Trout’s 150th homer. BUT THEN… because I used the razzmlb promo code I got $20 paypalled back to me. So I got a super sweet seat to watch two of my favorite guys on my team, Correa and Springer, for $14. Awesome. Now if only the field box seats in Anaheim had nice soft cushions like Yankee Stadium. But that ain’t Seatgeek’s fault. In summation, sorry Stubhub, I’ve met someone new and her same is Seatgeek. Yeah, it’ll look horrible on the wedding invitations, but I’m in love.

this is what happens when the gap in my roto league between first (me) and second place is the same as the gap between 2nd and 9th. i come to razzball to say thanks and talk about shitty dance jams.
