Less than a week away!  I’m more excited than that feeling in Grey’s pants when he drafts Delino DeShields…  I think I shaved it down to 3 references today!  I bet if you were reading quickly and saw “in Grey’s pants” and “shaved”, you mighta thought something different was happening!  On today’s show we break down my anti-SP RCL draft from a week-and-a-half ago, and also chat Grey’s draft in the Yahoo F&F (which you can follow along and read more in-depth here).  If you didn’t pick it up from the description, Grey was super pumped about someone who fell in the draft!  We also go over some notables from Spring Training, including a starting OF Grey hit on in his Spring analysis (in that he got it right, not that he shouted catcalls at him!) and a new starter in Seattle.  Here’s our latest edition of the Razzball Baseball Podcast:

Excellent listen! The great thing about drafting pitching late, when they blow out their elbows or head to the disgraceful list, at least we can be comfortable knowing we didn’t spend an early pick on them. So I’m with you, JB!

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@JakeTPE: Thanks man! Hahaha I know right?! And with so many high upside guys late this yr (at least I feel more bullish on the Rodon/Ross/Corbins of the world) I’m liking that redraft strategy

    JB/Grey,

Great stuff. I also got Pujols much later than expected in my recent 10-teamer. Sure, he isn’t 2008 Pujols, but the world’s gone mad when Jeurys Familia is going before him.

Feel free to comment on my 10 team H2H 6×6 (add OBP and Holds) roster. Or not; it must get tiring looking at these. I relied on the FML’s wisdom on a number of my later picks.

    C: Don’t have one yet

@Alcibiades Escobar: Hah I know right?! How about Hector Rondo going 1 pick before Pujols in Grey’s draft… Crazytalk! Hah Grey has to comment on these a lot more than me, I love em! I’m not huge on Cueto or Ross, but I love everything else I’m seeing. I think a lot will rely on Iglesias/Severino (love him too)/Teheran etc behind usable. Thanks for listening!

  7. Ryan741 says:
    (link)

JB, quick trade question for you. I have a couple of trade offers in a H2H points league. I was offered Max and Rizzo for Kershaw and Wade Davis, probably going to decline that one. I was also offered Kluber and Stroman for Arrieta and my 5th round draft pick. I think I like that one, but I have a hard time trading Arrieta when I have him paired with Kershaw and Noah. What are your thoughts?

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Ryan741: Hmmm, it is tempting! The first one that is. I kinda like the first one more than the 2nd, but yeah I think I’m holding in both unless you had some crazy good RP and losing Davis wouldn’t matter much…

  8. Jensen says:
    (link)

Just drafted this pitching staff in a keep forever league. Liriano, Darvish, McCullers, Richards, Pineda, Rodon, Iglesias, Severino, Nola, and Leake. Don’t draft pitchers early kids, it’ll do you wrong.

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Jensen: Nice! Really like that staff, I’m not big on Richards bouncing back or stashing Darvish (but in keep forever, damn that feels nice!), but damn if they don’t have upside! If one hits, and I think a lot of the rest do, you’ll be golden!

      • Jensen says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin: Yeah I don’t expect 2014 Richards but if he can be halfway between 2014 and 2015 I’ll be pleased. I just wanted another ‘safe’ guy to round out the group of injured guys/guy who likes to put STICKUM on the baseballs.

  9. Dom says:

I drafted too many stashes in my redraft (Joey Gallo, AJ Reed, Julio Urias, Jose Berrios) who should I be most willing to cut? Who’s the closest? Thx

    Basketball championship week wooook

    • Jensen says:
      (link)

@Dom: Cut Gallo 1st. Rangers have said he won’t be playing OF again and will be in minors till Beltre is gone. I’d also cut Urias, he’s 19 and I don’t think the Dodgers rush him. Berrios should be up 1st, then I would say Reed.

      • JB Gilpin

        JB Gilpin says:
        (link)

@Dom: @Jensen: Yup agree, Gallo is my first out. Agree on Berrios 1 then Reed 2, I’d prob him and Urias in redraft, how deep is the league?

        • dom says:
          (link)

@JB Gilpin: 18 teams 29 man roster deepest ive ever played in. h2h 8 hitting cats (H BB R RBI XBH HR OPS STL), I’m punting steals and focused just on good OPS guys because they hit all the other cats besides swipes. there’s 8 pitching cats (IP W L QS K ERA WHIP Saves) and I was considering punting saves but did indeed draft 3 relievers late (S Casilla, David Hernandez, Quackenbush). Do you think punting saves is a good strategy to focus on the other 7 pitching cats, even though I’m already punting SB’s? See what trade value they have to bolster my depth elsewhere/open up roster spots

          • JB Gilpin

            JB Gilpin says:
            (link)

@dom: Oh mannnnn. Yeah I may retract and say Gallo is prob your only drop, that’s deep!

Yeah H2H, I’m all about punting. With 16 cats, punting two that barely impact the others is a very savvy strategy to me

            • dom says:
              (link)

@JB Gilpin: yeah I’m seeing if Gallo’s name value + a reliever maybe can get me a low end OFer like Saunders or Hicks. Any other target ideas?

              • JB Gilpin

                JB Gilpin says:
                (link)

@dom: Yup that sounds like a plan! Ummmm, I love Rodon/Ross/Corbin – those are my big sleepers – I think Hammel is an unsexy guy to get. Maybe go upside of Souza if you need a bat?

  10. Schmohawks Bob says:

  12. Blint says:
    (link)

Hey JP!! Just finished my draft last night . I am trying to figure out how good my team and where I lack. Its a keeper league.
We roster 330 players with 3 NA spots. Also have extra roster space- 1 CI, 1MI and two UTIL spots. I have Moncada, Gallo and and Judge at NA spots

    Now my team

    C- Schwarber

1B- Chris Davis, Piscotty,Byung Ho Park

    2b- Daniel Murphy, Starlin Castro

    3b- Franco,Todd Frasier,

    SS- Correa , Lindor,

    OF- Trout,Yelich, Buxton,Stanton,Billy Hamilton,Delino, Dexter Fowler

    SP-Carrasco,Salazar,Tyson Ross,Stroman, Tanaka,McCullers,Yu Darvish

    RP- Wade Davis,Kimrel,Giles, Arodys Vizcaino

I think I definitely punting Average with this team. I have Holds category in this league too should I add 3 RP’s for Holds?

    Thanks a lot!!

      (link)

@Blint: Yo! Oh nice yeah that’s a nice set of NA guys! Yeah it’s def time to address some holds, holds is it’s own and saves it’s own cat, not SV+HLD right? Yeah you’re def an AVG punt, what’s the league format?

      • Blint says:
        (link)

        @JB Gilpin:
Holds and Saves are different. Its better this way isnt it?

League format is we have a few extra categories otehr than the usual ones-
Hitting we have OPS, K, and Net Stolen Bases
Pitching we have QS, K/9, Complete Game and Holds

Which players should pick up for Holds?Basically every setup guy is available right now!

Thanks JB. Put Grey in jail. He stole Albert Pujols.
By the way Grey was going crazy the the whole while about how crazy the league is but didn’t he TOO pass on Pujols for 3 rounds before he finally took him???

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

@Blint: Yeah I like em different for most leagues, but I combined em in REL bc it’s 30 teams x25 man rosters x5 DL x 2 NA so saves just couldn’t be a cat haha.

Holds I like Strop, Miller/Betances (obvious ones), T Watson, Knebel (could become closer afterwards – a little hometown bias :) ) and Uehara.

          Hah that’s a great point!

Think I may be able to one-up your Pujols pick one way or another in my recent 14 team h2h pts dynasty draft w/one of the following:

Pujols didn’t go until the 115th pick
I got Belt 83rd, Hanley at 198, and Lawrie at 282

And as an aside, can I be an honorary Seager Brother too? I managed to get Corey 55th overall and Kyle 11th overall. Debating changing my team name to ‘Seager to Seager’ but the Family Guy folks could sue me w/it being so close to their Gumbel to Gumbel.

JB, just a quick trade question for you. It’s a H2H points league, I was offered Max and Carrasco for Kershaw and Stroman. I currently have Kershaw, Kluber, Noah and Stroman as my 4 keepers. It seems fairly close, even though I hate trading easily the most valuable player in a points league. What do you think?

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@ryan_horner: Yeahhhhh I think I’m holding too, Stroman could be pretty solid

      • ryan_horner says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin well, I declined his offer, but now he came back with Max, Carrasco, and his 7th round pick for Kershaw and my 5th and 6th rounders. I still don’t want to trade Kershaw but it’s getting awfully tempting. I would have Max, Kluber, Noah, Carrasco, Stroman as my first 5 SP in a H2H points league.

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

@ryan_horner: Sorry just got this! Uggghhhh yeah it is getting tempting, but I think Max+Carrasco is more equal to Kershaw than giving up that big a dif in picks
