SPOILER ALERT! Kerry Wood is out for 6 to 8 weeks with a strained dorsi muscle. I thought only dolphins had dorsi muscles.  Huh.  Wait!  Maybe Kerry Wood’s a dolphin.  He does seem like he’d be good at Connect Four… underwater.  Nah, couldn’t be.  Though I could see him getting injured trying to remove a beer from a six pack holder.  Hmm… maybe.  Alas, for another day.  Chris Perez is the pickup.  If my money’s good at this rodeo, Kerry Wood’s not coming back until the All-Star Break and even then he’s no sure thing.  Anyway, here’s some other fantasy baseball news:

Huston Street – Suffering from only shoulder inflammation.  Could resume closer’s role by late-April.  Put this in the file of, See Then Believe.

J.P. Howell – Out for 3 weeks with a sore shoulder.  Can’t The Professor cook him up a cure with some coconuts and straw?

Dioner Navarro – Hurt his leg on a collision.  Could mean more playing time for Kelly Shoppach.  Those who like their ctachers late, take notice.

Cliff Lee – The Adverb might miss a start with an ab strain.  Sounds like someone needs to leave Suzanne Somers’ workouts to the ladies.

  1. royce! says:

Would Perez break the top 20 in your closer rankings?

  2. Grey

    Grey says:

@royce!: Not at first, but could in a month.

  3. Tom Emanski says:

Grey, after reading almost this entire site for the last two years (you helped me finish 2nd in 18 and 20 team leagues last year!), I drafted this team for this year:

It’s an 18 team roto league with OBP, SLG, R, HR, RBI, and Net SBs. Pitching stats are ERA, W, WHIP, K, SV, and HR allowed (hate this).

C Jeff Clement (C, DH) – He’ll get lots of ABs and has a good OBP
    1B Adrian Gonzalez
2B Chase Utley – Took him 4th over Braun
3B Mark Reynolds (3B, 1B) – Had him last year, sticking with him
    SS Asdrubal Cabrera (2B, SS)
    2B/SS Adam Kennedy (2B, 3B) – Ugh
    1B/3B David Freese
OF Nelson Cruz – Love my power-speed guys
OF Brad Hawpe – I know you don’t like him, but it happens
OF Nick Swisher (1B, OF) – Good late pick for an OBP league
OF Chris Young – Ugh. Bad pick in OBP league
OF Chris Dickerson – Might platoon. 5 OF slots sucks.
UTIL Willie Harris – OBP won’t kill me but another bad late pick.

    P Ricky Nolasco – My first pitcher and he’s a Grey All-Star
P Matt Garza – Kershaw almost fell to me but settled for Garza
P Jorge De La Rosa – J. Sanchez almost fell so I settled here too
P Frank Francisco – Hope he keeps the job
P David Aardsma – Hope he keeps the job
P Phil Hughes – Hope he starts
P Francisco Liriano – I’m fine with him starting or closing
P Johnny Cueto – Not sure why you’re high on him but I took him
    P Kevin Correia – Solid
Bench Aroldis Chapman – Hoping to strike gold
Bench Homer Bailey – Ready to break out I think
Bench Jason Hammel – Meh, decent enough

    What do you think?

  4. Grey

    Grey says:

@Tom Emanski: Well, it’s a deep league, but Harris, Dickerson and Young are pretty bad picks. Your pitching looks better than your hitting, which isn’t a great place to be. The kind of Aroldis pick you did there you should’ve done more with your hitting. I.e., upside late picks. Maybe if dlR or Aroldis break out you can trade them for some hitting help.

  5. Tom Emanski says:

I’ll drop one of them for Venable (moving to the 5 hole) and then work the wire for the other 2. Otherwise I don’t think it’s a bad offense.

  6. I drink your milkshake. says:

The closer game sure is fun this season.

How far do Rivera, Broxton, Bell, K-Rod, and Soria have to fall for them to be worthwhile of an early(ish) pick? Thanks you.

  7. atomeka says:

If I’ve Kemp Votto Youk Pablo and Markakis as keepers and am offered Sizemore for Pablo do I do it? I want to believe in Sizemore’s bounce back.

  8. YourMomsBoyfriend says:

Hey all, I may need a little help with my Yahoo auction draft next Sunday. Here’s the thing: I’ve got something going on Sunday that might end up making me late to the auction or possibly miss it altogether. Which would be a ridiculous shame considering that’s a big $ league and with my current keepers/$ situation, I’m in better shape heading into the auction than I have been in years. I’m sort of becoming a razzball disciple as I think the site is a riot and smart at the same time, and the commenters seem to know their shizznit. I’m looking to work out a deal where somebody conducts either part or all of the auction for me and I’d either (a) pay you something we could negotiate over email or (b) give you a percentage of potential winnings. It would take up about three hours of your life, max. If anyone is interested, shoot me an email and let’s talk about it. Grey/Rudy, et al, I might repost if I get no response, hope that’s okay. It’s only cuz I love me some Razzball. ([email protected])
    Thanks in advance yo.

  9. Nick0rz says:

    Hey Grey,

This season when I’ve been doing my mocks I’ve been noticing A LOT of closer available in the last 5 rounds, and I’ve been picking them accordingly, and have usually been ending with 5 closers. Any idea if this is just a by product of people autopicking the last 10 rounds, or are people just forgetting about Dotel and friends? Also, would you recommend snatching up closers till they’re gone and skipping taking any offensive bench players, or leave a few closers on the table.

    Thanks a bunch!

  10. Grey

    Grey says:

@I drink your milkshake.: Closers are always like this, more reason to not buy an expensive one.

    @atomeka: I’d want Sizemore.

@Nick0rz: People don’t take mocks that serious, especially not the end rounds of them.

  11. Mini Doughnuts says:

@Grey: Would you kick one of those guys outta bed past the 100th pick?

  12. ETMcgee says:

just had 12 team draft. picked 4 of 12.
    10 x 10: OPS, BB,1b,2b,3b + 5 standard offense;
K/9, Blnsv, IP, L, QS + 5 pitching standard categories:

    1b – Votto
    2b – Cano
    3b – M Young
    SS – Alexie Ram
    MI – Al Escobar
    CI – C Pena
OF x 4 – Braun, Granderson, Lind, CarGo
    UT – Vlad, Nick Johnson
    Bn – K Johnson, Podsednick

SP – Nolassco, CBills, Garza, Slowey, Sanchez, Harden
RP – Wagner, Frank Frank, MGonzales, C Perez, D Bard, L Gregerson

Obviously, i have no catcher (how’s that for a punt!) so i will likely drop either one of the middle relievers (lgregerson) or kelly johnson or podsednik and grab AJ perzynski or john baker.

Went offense early and often, so had to piecemeal the staff with a bunch of middle relievers and will be mining the wire for SP, but i think i did alright. no flexibility though…

  13. Mini Doughnuts says:

    @Grey: Rivera Broxton or K-Rod?

  14. Grey

    Grey says:

@ETMcgee: Ha! Nice punt. What are you doing with Podsednik? Get a catcher. If you feel like you had to piecemeal the staff, you did a good job of it. Your offense doesn’t look that good though, so I’m not sure if you went early and often in the right areas. I see Votto, Cano, Braun, Grandy, Pena and Lind guys worth top 100 picks. So that’s 4 top 100 starters, but I don’t see that. I see 1 maybe 2. That means you reached somewhere. I guess Young’s better in this league setup….

  15. ETMcgee says:

@Grey: is my math wrong, or does your previous list include 6 guys as opposed to 4 top 100 starters? (braun, votto, cano, grandy, lind, pena, with fringe myoung)

it is a league with a bunch of solid players who know each other and who don’t draft by the preset rankings, so there were some reaches for sure and some others were drafting guys partially to spite other players (or to use their man crushes for trades).

Michael Young was a little reach at #69, but zimmerman/wright/mini donk were gone at begining of r2, pablo/youk gone early in r3, even chone was taken already, so i didn’t want to punt 3b/SS and C.

Nolassco was #93 and CBills was a little reach at #100 (but upper-middle class pitching was getting pretty slim). next pick was CarGo at #117 (i’m pretty high on him this year, like i was on adam jones last year) and garza at #124.

I probably should have taken jay bruce or carlos quentin (damn his low preseason rank, gets buried in the draft list) instead of vlad @#148.

Grabbed podsednik cuz it was the last round, late at night (1/2 league lives in asia), i was high and was trying to watch the blazers basketball game, so you could say there wasn’t much thought to it. just going to wait for the waivers to clear and grab a catcher (if i’ve punted this far, certainly won’t waste a waiver claim on a catcher).

  16. Adam says:

If Desmond ends up with the Nats SS job, would you take him or Theriot at MI?

  17. Adam says:

@ETMcgee: I think he’s saying you have 6 top 100 hitters, so there should be 4 top 100 SP

  18. Steve says:

If I’m J.P I’m skipping the Professor’s cure and going to see Ginger for a deep-tissue massage.

  19. HoneyNutIchiros says:

Sup Grey. Just did my first auction draft at ESPN. Man that is brutal waiting for those last few bargains. I think i had a good gameplan going in and stuck to it and my budget for the most part. Here is how it played out.

    C – Soto
    1 – Howard
    2 – Cano
    3 – Zimmerman
    SS- Andrus
OF- Holliday, Lind, Either, McCutchen, Bourbon
    MI- Aaron Hill
    CI – Morales
Util – Vernon Wells, Nolan Reimold

SP- Lincicum, Verlander, J Johnson, Billingsley, Wandy Rod, Ervin Santana, Strasburn, Arnoldis Chapman
    RP- Fransico, Aardsma, Jenks

Spent 6 total on my closers and catcher. Loaded up on power bats and arms and got my steals late with Bourbon and Andrus. Speed costs alot more at ESPN auctions as the computer bidders drove up the prices on everyone. No deals until the very end when they were closed out. I like this team but want to put it to the Grey test.

  20. Mark says:

I am really thinking of dropping Wood. I am in a deep 20 team mixed H2H. Would you expect Perez to be permanent. Last time I owned Perez he stunk the joint up. Take a wait and see approac?

Also with Wood, when will the Indians officially DL him?

  21. HoneyNutIchiros says:

BTW – Forgot to mention my badass team name….. Mathew Berry’s Big Fat Head

  22. ETMcgee says:

ah, i see. definitely not 4 top 100 on my team. looked at the results a little more, don’t really think i could have pulled it off (i am going to have to claim young for #7 hitter based on the league setup) unless i scored on late round flier (which i didn’t) or on the wire (we’ll see).

  23. Adam says:

@Grey: Thanks…you have him projected at 85/10/60/.275/20 in your top 300, is this assuming a full season of ABs?

  24. Commish Cauda (formerly Mike) says:

Grey…I don’t remember your take on Brandon Webb? You like him for a DL stash who can reap benefits for 2/3 of a season?

I can trade some cheap $1-$2 back-ups for him in a deep 20-team salary cap keeper league, but he’ll cost me $7 ($70 total team salary). He’d then cost me $8 next year, (if I chose to keep him for 2011).

I have $10 cap room, so I’m thinking about doing it. Invest in him or wait for something better?

  25. peter says:

I haven’t seen any word on whether or not Chapman will be starting in the majors. Even so, is it still worth grabbing him between rounds 12-14 (12 team league)? It’s a keeper league…

  26. Grey

    Grey says:

@HoneyNutIchiros: Nice team name. No idea how many teams are in that league.

@Mark: Perez will be the closer for at least two months. Wood will be DL’d at the beginning of the season. I wouldn’t drop him.

@Adam: Yeah, but there’s upside for more.

@Commish Cauda (formerly Mike): Sure, if you can get him for cheap and have DL room.

@peter: It’s not official yet, but the way’s he’s pitching it should be soon.

  27. PJtres says:

grey, ive noticed krispie young in killing the ball in ST…
what say ye? any adjustment to his forecasted numberS?

  28. grandysdandy says:

latos looks like he has the 5th starter job…
him over colby lewis? especially in a keeper league? or could it be a wash?

  29. Grey

    Grey says:

@PJtres: I trust three years of numbers over two weeks of the spring.

    @grandysdandy: I’d want Latos.

  30. grandysdandy says:

    thanks grey.
if latos does break camp w/ the job, i saw in your top 80 SP you were predicting 6-7/4.15/1.32/125 in 20 starts.

do you think those numbers could be eclipsed?

also, would you trade FOR cliff lee in your leagues if you could? so far, it just seems like injury after injury

  31. mrbaseball says:

J.P. Howell – Out for 3 weeks with a sore shoulder. Can’t The Professor cook him up a cure with some coconuts and straw?

That Gilligan he drank the cure

  32. mrbaseball says:

Just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale
a tale of a fateful trip,
that started from this tropic port,
    aboard this tiny ship.
The mate was a mighty sailin’ man,
    the Skipper brave and sure,
five passengers set sail that day,
    for a three hour tour,
    a three hour tour.

    The weather started getting rough,
    the tiny ship was tossed.
If not for the courage of the fearless crew
    the Minnow would be lost.
    The Minnow would be lost.

The ship aground on the shore of this uncharted desert isle
    with Gilligan,
    the Skipper too.
    A millionaire and his wife,
    a movie star,
    the proffessor and Mary Ann,
    here on Gilligan’s Isle.

    (Ending verse)

So this is the tale of our castaways,
there here for a long long time.
They’ll have to make the best of things,
    it’s an uphill climb.
The first mate and his Skipper too
    will do their very best,
    to make the others comf’terble
    in their tropic island nest.
No phone ,no lights, no motor car,
    not a single luxury
    like Robinson Crusoe
    it’s primitive as can be.
So join us here each week my friends,
you’re sure to get a smile,
    from seven stranded castaways
    here on Gilligan’s Isle!

  33. Grey

    Grey says:

@grandysdandy: Maybe on Latos, but doubtful. I’d trade for Lee if the deal were right.

    @mrbaseball: Nice.

  34. Mark G says:

When actuaries go over insurance probabilities, they have Kerry Wood listed as more of a risk than most senior citizens.

He is and always will be a failure (Chicago Cub) in my mind.

  35. Terrence Mann says:

Why am I not surprised that watching the Blazers and drafting Podsednik are both directly involved with drug use?

Anyway, good thing Dusty Baker isn’t still managing Wood. He’d see the 6-8 week estimate and still pencil him in for opening day.

  36. Cotton says:

“The Adverb” is an instant classic! I’m in Seattle and I’m using it all season… ad nauseum!

  37. Doug Ault says:

@Grey: Seasons greetings,…..I just moved Coghlan for Cargonz,am I the road to Utopia? ;-)

  38. Grimlock says:

Grey…what no “Mourning Wood”? I figured you’d been waiting to use that one since the site went up. Ah well, he’ll get injured again.

  39. AJ says:

Okay, so let’s just sayyyy that Perez is either ineffective, and/or he too gets injured. Who are the other suspect prospects to close for the Tribe?
(One of my leagues is very deep, with 16-man reserve rosters, so I’m usually able to pick up saves via my reserve-reliever picks)

Jensen Lewis? Tony Sipp? Joe Smith? I have Lewis and Smith on reserve; I’m wondering if I should snag Sipp as well. (Again, deep reserve roster. I wouldn’t have to drop anything of value.)

  40. Tony says:

did another mock, what do you think, grey or anyone:

    1. Miguel Cabrera (Det – 1B)
    2. Ryan Howard (Phi – 1B)
    3. CC Sabathia (NYY – SP)

I set autodraft for my last 4 picks. Hence why there’s two mediocre 2B drafted. I tried out the two big 1b bats back to back in the first and second, got miggy and howard, coulda took wright instead of one of them. I also missed out on Stewart so thats why i have the guys i do for my 2B slot. I think i have great speed and power should be good? Let me know.

  43. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Terrence Mann: Ha!

    @Cotton: Hehe

    @Doug Ault: Yes, you are.

@Grimlock: That exact title was thought of, also thought it was too obvious.

@AJ: I’d grab Jensen Lewis for now, but that sorta question won’t be answered until we see who pitches well.

@Tony: Yeah, that team look very strong, so much so that I think your competition was either not that great or you were picking against computers.

    @mrbaseball: Here’s hoping you’re right.

  44. @Grey:

The “Big Draft” is this morning, looks like I ended up with #3. A slot I like but leaves me with the Utley (love him) vs Arod (hate him) dilemna.

  45. I’m Thinking Utley r1, Tulo/Upton/Holliday/Someone that Falls r2, Adrian Gonzo r3, Whichever 3b is left (Mini Donkey or Youks probably) r4.

  46. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Elijah: Yeah, that makes sense.

  47. @Grey:

I’m glad your rankings are giving me a legit excuse to pass on A-Rod at 3 haha. Don’t wanna have to root for him. I’m sticking with Dapper Dan unless something crazy happens.

  48. Doug Ault says:

@Grey: Who would be a realistic target(s) as a starting pitcher in return for Derrek Lee?

This is for a 10 team roto league

In a keeper league that plays the standard categories plus OPS, in what order do you take Hill, Figgins and Beckham at 2b?

  51. Wow, the Draft is really coming to me.
    #3 Utley
    #18 Tulo
    #23 Holliday
    #38 Votto
    #43 Mini Donkey

  52. If only Upton hadn’t gone at #17 I could be totally Homering.

  54. quimmy says:

Just finished a 14 team draft yesterday:

    C – Miguel Montero (12)
    1B – Chris Davis (10)
    2B – Brandon Phillips (4)
    3B – Ryan Zimmerman (3)
    SS – Jimmy Rollins (2)

    BENCH – Scott Sizemore (24)
    BENCH – Sean Rodriguez (20)
    BENCH – Kevin Kouzmanov (23)
    BENCH – Sean Marcum (21)

I wound up punting 1B/CI, taking guys who can give me 25 hr and 85rbi each as a baseline. If either Davis or LaRoche breakout, and I think they both can, Im golden. BA is a little suspect, but I think this lineup can give me .275, which would put me in the top half of that category. I have alot of power, and sb i think im good too. My pitching is really solid and I project 1100 k’s out of these pitchers, which would win me that cat. What do you think?

  55. Art Vandelay says:

Another mock for you all. 12 team league – 1 MI, 1 CI, 1 UTIL, 9 P. I had the first pick. Would have drafted Stewart, but i wanted to see how late he went (fyi, around 160ish), so I ended up thin at 2B. I drafted against a few computers, otherwise this team would’ve turned out worse. Thoughts?

    C- Napoli (17)
    1B – Pujols (1)
    2B – Weeks (16)
    SS – Andrus (8)
    3B – Zimmerman (3B)

  56. Grey

    Grey says:

@Doug Ault: Try Ubaldo, maybe Bills.

@GTS: When you get Soto and you punted catcher, you know you’re doing something right. Same with Everth. Looks like a very solid team. Hard to argue with the pitching or hitting. One of these:

    Matusz, Brian SP BAL
    Romero, Ricky SP TOR

Would’ve been enough, but it’s a small issue.

    @Mini Doughnuts: Figgins, Hill…

    @Elijah: Looks nice so far.

@quimmy: LaRoche is 30 years old, he’s not a breakout candidate. Pitching’s obviously more solid than the hitting, which isn’t great since pitching is more fickle than hitting. Sure have a lot of bench hitters too, no idea why. Finally, you’re low on power by a decent amount in my estimation.

  57. Then
    58 Nelson Cruz
    63 Adam Dunn *Double Donkey!

@Grey: In a 12 team standard roto league, if i have a good offense and a front three of Lester, Nolasco, Slowey, is it reasonable to round out my rotation with three or four young high upside starters, or should i go for one more safe bet a la Tim Hudson?

  60. Steve says:

@grey: thx for ur advise as always. Question:

My league starts 11 batters and based on ur projections (and me giving laroche 25hr) I am slated for 267hr. That’s lacking? Where should I be at?

Agree on laroche not being a breakout, I should have said I am optimistic he can do btr than his projections.

Oh and I have Aardsma too ups. Somehow I ended up with 5 closers. I guess I should trade 1 heh.

  70. Grey

    Grey says:

@Elijah: Yeah, there’s time for that. You can either build a huge lead or prey on people now.

  71. d2bnz says:

How confident are you that we will see Jeff Clement with a regular job given his .154 BA thus far .

  72. Grey

    Grey says:

@Art Vandelay: Looks like a solid team, but if you’re against computers it doesn’t mean much, does it?

  73. Grey

    Grey says:

@d2bnz: Knowing the Pirates, they’ll bungle it, but what’s he costing you in a draft? A last round pick? It’s worth it there to try for him.

  74. Art Vandelay says:

@Grey: Well, it started out with 12 real people, but a few dropped out after the first few rounds, so it was probably 6-8 real and 4-6 computers for most of the draft. Do you think I ended up too light on power? Thanks.

  75. Ed says:

My Yahoo draft is this Thursday and I won’t be able to attend. I can pre-rank my top 300 and then hope for the best. Any chance you will be updating your top 300 spreadsheet so I might be able to just use that ranking. I’m asking because I think your the best.

  76. Grey

    Grey says:

@Art Vandelay: Maybe a little, but having both Span and Choo in your outfield will do that.

@Ed: I’ve been updating the top 300 once or twice a week, so it should be ready to go.

  77. Matt says:

    Hey Grey,

I just finished a yahoo H2H draft, drafting 11th of 12 teams. Just wondering what your or any of you other knowledgeable commenters thought of my lineup, especially in regards to weaknesses? Thanks for your insight!

BN-Coghlan (my comp froze and i got stuck with him..drop him for fowler?)

    P-J. Sanchez

  78. Grey

    Grey says:

@Matt: Lose Coghlan for Fowler. You have way too many bench hitters. Two catchers? Blech. No idea what Barmes is going to do there either. You’re just gonna get sonvabenched. Anyway, your hitting looks very solid with balanced guys that can give you speed and power. Well done there. And your pitching looks fine. Nice team overall.

  79. SamYo says:

Grey, do you consider Granderson or Nelson Cruz #1 OF’s ?

  80. Grey

    Grey says:

    @SamYo: Grandy more so.

  81. Nate Marcum says:

Unfortunately for me, I think I waited toooo long on my C’s (stupid 2C format) and had to settle for Ramon Hernandez (rd 23) and JR Towles (rd 29). What are your takes on Towles? He has been “touted” for a while obviously, and seems to be seeing the ball well this spring, but Todd Van Popple was “pitching” well at one point also.

Secondly, in that same league, I kind of went stupid and took Carlos Santana (3 C’s, have I not learned anything from you at all?) But, when do you expect Santana to start getting significant PT? over/under June 1st?

  82. chet steadman says:

Aside from the obvious “that is the dumbest idea ever” what do you guys think about a H2H snake draft league with 5×5 + obp, complete games, and grand slams?

Does Halladay move up a round or two? I rarely draft pitchers before the 7th or so, but I may be inclined to pick him up if available in the 3rd.

  83. @Grey:

Guy who has David Wright hates the Mets and has too many 3b…Think I should go after him?

  84. GopherDay says:

Grey, I had my draft last Sunday, but sadly I couldn’t make it….I left my chances up to auto-draft. This is the team I got: Its a 12 team league ROTO 6X6 (Ks and HLDS added) Next year we can keep whoever we want for 2 rounds more than what we drafted them this year. So next year I can keep Napoli for a 15th round price.

SP Cole Hamels (Phi – SP) (Rd 6)

RP Chris Pérez (Cle – RP) (Pickup)
P Mike Adams (SD – RP) (Rd 21)

P Chad Billingsley (LAD – SP) (Rd 10)
P Roy Oswalt (Hou – SP) (Rd 13)
BN Edwin Jackson (Ari – SP) (Rd 15)
BN Kevin Slowey (Min – SP) (Pick up)
BN Ervin Santana (LAA – SP) (Pick up)
BN Franklin Morales (Col – RP) (Pick up)

I don’t think its a bad team, really power heavy and almost no speed…I’ll probably look to trade power for speed. I would have done the late rounds differently, but thats what you get from auto-draft. I was really glad Ervin Santana and Kevin Slowey were on waivers, I made a quick add of them.

I like my pitching staff, minus Edwin Jackson….And it really stinks that I only got one closer. I’ll be playing the SAGNOF game a lot this season.

Who would you try and trade from my team? I would normally try and trade Nick Johnson, but he doesn’t strike out very much, while Ian Stewart does a lot. There has been some interest in Stewart, and I could probably get a reasonable haul for him.

What do you think Grey? Your insight is very much appreciated!!

    Grey says:

@Nate Marcum: Barring better options, hold Towles for now and see if he’s got his act together. Can’t imagine a situation where I’d own three catchers.

@chet steadman: Sure, Halladay in the third sounds fine in that league. Grand Slams are a silly category.

@Elijah: Depends what you’re paying for him.

@GopherDay: You have three closers. Morales and Perez are closers now. And Adams might not be far behind. Your pitching’s sronger than your hitting, so that’s not great. You own Vernon Wells, Nick Swisher and Nick Johnson. That’s terrible.

No, I wouldn’t do that Rajai trade.

@Dad: Looks like a solid team. Really like the hitting a lot. I agree, the pitching might be an issue. I’d add Kuo and Latos when you DL them.

@Eddy: Ha! Yeah, tough when your cheatsheet is read by everyone at the draft. Cantu, huh? Frenchy? Your hitting looks okay, a little light on power and speed. Your starters get real wonky after the top guys on your staff.

  91. Lava says:

Just did my auction draft for the year. It was insane. 18 team roto league, normal categories. Players went for a lot of money. Like, $50’s-$60’s for the top players, with Lincecum going for $72 because ESPN’s draft software screwed up.

Ended up with a lot of starting pitchers, none of which I love. Verlander, DLRosa, Niemann, Slowey, Lilly, and only two closers + Matt Lindstrom and a few other fallbacks.

I’m thinking that trading Niemann, Lilly, and Lindstrom to a team that ended up top heavy in pitching, for one of Greinke or F-H’er would give me the flexibility to maybe trade De La Rosa for some power, if I ended up needing it.

So Niemann, Lilly, Lindstrom for King Felix? Which side would you guys pick?

  92. @Dad:

Seems like you could use more arms.

  93. mrbaseball says:

LF Nolan Reimold(notes) continues to favor his surgically repaired Achilles tendon and has had a noticeable limp for most of training camp. While getting regular rest early in camp, Reimold struggled to an 0-for-15 start at the plate. – do you still stand by your numbers here grey

  94. Lava says:

And if it would be better to make a post in the forums with my full team, I definitely will. Didn’t want to inundate anyone with the whole roster, though I’m definitely looking at acquiring some power at some point.

  95. Grey

    Grey says:

@Lava: You’re trading bad pitching for good pitching? Hey, if you can do it, go for it.

  96. Matt says:

    @Grey: Thanks for the advice.

Also, not familar with ‘sonvabenched’, could you elucidate? Cheers

  97. Grey

    Grey says:

@mrbaseball: Not yet, but it’s something to be aware of.

  98. Lava says:

Heh heh, true. I did added up your projections and the hydra that I’d send him would come out pretty close in wins and k’s, but a little behind in ERA and WHIP. I’m mostly liking the flexibility it gives me, because you’re right, Lilly/Niemann aren’t all that valuable on their own.

  99. royce! says:

Which one of these RP would you rather have: Lyon, Capps, Rauch, Gregg, Lindstrom, Perez, Downs?

It’s embarrassing that all are available in my 10-team league, so I plan to grab the best and then remind my brother in law that he might want more than two closers.

  100. royce! says:

Or I could lose Buchholz and grab two, and then stream a SP until one of my closers goes down…

  101. Grey

    Grey says:

@royce!: I’d take one for now.

  102. supermets says:

Rickie Weeks was just dropped in my league. I have the team I posted above, Utley at 2B and no MI spot. I feel like Weeks needs to be owned but I have no spot for him. Maybe drop Colby Lewis for him and see what happens from there?

  103. supermets says:

Also, I dropped Lyon for Morales because he seems more likely to have a closer’s spot. Should I pick Lyon back up for Lewis? Lindstrom is taken already.

  104. Grey

    Grey says:

@supermets: I’d want Lyon over Lewis. You have no room for Weeks.

  105. Grey

    Grey says:

@supermets: Actually, I’d go with Weeks over Lewis.

  106. Eddy says:

Well Frenchy was in the 25th round, so cut me some slack there. And Cantu was about the best guy around with a shot to reach 90 RBI. I’m pretty sure if you name a diff. guy I couldve chosen, he was gone by then.

  107. B.J. says:

Hey guys I just finished my live in person draft and was wondering what your take is on my squad. It is a team 10 yahoo h2h league where I had the 5th pick. I didn’t go in with a specific strategy, be as honest as can be. Thanks! (round, overall pick)

    C- Benji Molina (22, 216) 1B- A. Gonzalez (2, 16) 2b- Brandon Phillips (4, 36) SS- Jose Reyes (9, 85) 3B- R. Zimmerman (3, 25)
OF- Ryan Braun (1,5), Josh Hamilton (7, 65), Carlos Gonzalez (12, 116) UTIL- Joey Votto (8,76)
    Bench- Alfonso Soriano (16,156), Ian Stewart (18, 176), Miguel Tejada (20, 196)

    RP- KRod (10, 96), Jose Valverde (14, 136)
    P- Chad Billingsley (11, 105), Kevin Slowey (13, 125), David Aardsma (15, 145)
    Bench- Roy Oswalt (17, 165), Jonathan Sanchez (19, 185), Phil Hughes (21, 205)

  108. Grey

    Grey says:

@Eddy: Fair enough. Just not sure why you would have a bench hitter that no one would own.

@B.J.: Reyes in the 9th is great value, same with CarGo. The back to back picks of pitchers hurt your hitting a bit. You didn’t need Johan there, but maybe you’ll have two insane aces and can trade one. Though the only weak spot on your hitting is at catcher and that’s fine. Overall, you have a very solid team.

  109. chet steadman says:

@Grey: regarding SLAM as a category, I couldn’t agree more. However, this league has been guaranteed money for me for several years now, and these silly quirks they keep adding only benefit the 2-3 people who don’t still use Y! default rankings as their main source of info.

With that said, my offensive plan is to punt average and take as many three-outcome, middle-of-the-order guys as possible, tacking on cheap SB guys at the end. I assume your Dunns & Papis will be underrated, because OBP and SLAM directly benefit them, and won’t be considered by most players.

  110. Eddy says:

is there anyone you would roster
instead (Frenchy is my only offensive bench hitter).

Would you prefer another hitter, a SP, or a RP who isn’t in line to close?

  111. PaulyOH says:

10-team NL-only keeper league. We can up to 13 on active.

For my final keeper, is Franklin Morales worth a chance at $2? I know Street will be out a month, but could it be longer.

My other 13th man options are Chris Dickerson at $5 (also have Stubbs) and Jason Hammel at $1.

  112. Grey

    Grey says:

@Eddy: Without knowing who’s out there, you need a SP.

    @PaulyOH: Go with Morales.

  113. jpm says:

Just drafted in a standard HxH 12 team league today, someone already offered me a trade: His David Wright and Ryan Doumit for my VMart and Carlos Gonzales. I have Chone Figgins at 3b currently and the rest of my outfield is Crawford, Braun, Rasmus and Garrett Jones. My gut reaction is to reject it, but am I doing the wrong thing?

  114. Grey

    Grey says:

    @jpm: I’d want Wright’s side.

  115. Eddy says:

Ok so you prefer an 8th SP by dropping Frenchy? Or did I misinterpret and you meant drop either Randy Wolf, Bailey, or Pettite for an available SP?

Guys that are in your SP rankings include:

    Chris Young
    Brandon Morrow
    Brad Penny
    Derek Lowe
    Randy Wells

That’s everyone who is available in the FA pool from your SP rankings. Dreadful I know, but what do you expect from Razzballers.

I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t drop Zambrano, as bad as he may be for any of them. So it’s narrowed down to Bailey, Frenchy, Wolf, or Pettite. Who do you drop? Or do you just leave everything the way it is?

And another question (sorry, I’m new to the roto thing). There’s a 180 GS limit. Knowing that 8 SP will eat that up too quickly, do I run everyone out there from day one? Or do I let the fliers like Bailey sit on the bench from the first day, see how they perform, then act accordingly?

  124. Steve says:

@AL KOHOLIC: I’m messing with you. He’s the king of those two stats, no doubt, but 20% of your budget on one player?

  125. AL KOHOLIC says:

@Steve: in that league,in years past you could do it because everyone spent thier money fairly early and you could grab $1 players easy, but last year 3 guys hoarded money till the end,one guy even left the draft with like 12 bucks, granted they stunk but you couldnt get cheap guys at the end of the draft

  126. anon says:

thanks, i actually just got home and only skimmed through all the replies today. yeah, that sorta answers my questions but it just means grey likes capps more than the some of the other guys.. I’d still be curious to hear if people view perez as a better closer option than morales or rausch.

  127. Eddy says:

Well for sure it’d be narrowed down to Rauch and Perez because they have the longest holds over the job, unlike Morales who has the job until Street is back. Personally I’d go Rauch.

  128. Grey

    Grey says:

@Eddy: You’re not going to be able to start the guys you have now every start anyway, so I wouldn’t worry about extra pitchers. Hold onto Big Z. I’m not crazy about him, but you have him now, so hold tight there. Frenchy’s doing nothing for you and no one’s picking him up anyway. Lose him for Morrow… Unless there’s an RP out there that might get saves.

@AL KOHOLIC: Kemp, A-Gon, Bruce, V-Mart, Nolasco and Pedroia.

@anon: No on Perez better than the other two.

@Maitland: You have like another whole team on your bench. Guess you’re punting saves, which I don’t think is great, but your league doesn’t really reward closers much. Anyway, I like your team for those categories. I’m not a big Coghlan fan, but there he’s all right. I think your pitching is going to be an issue. You took a lot of upside/risk on with those guys.

  129. AL KOHOLIC says:

@mrbaseball: I’d go with Morrow over Romero.

  140. mrbaseball says:

I would have liked one more good starter – it just did not happen – the 14 teams in this league been playing fantasy ball since 2003 so they all know what they are doing –

  141. HotZona says:

Grey, What are your thoughts on this 10-team 6×5 (with hits, using avg). Needs? Surplus?
C- Montero SP – King Felix
    1B – Reynolds SP – J Johnson
    2B – Cano RP – Soria
    3B – ARod RP – Marmol
    SS – Andrus P – Kershaw
    OF – Holliday P – Oswalt
    OF – Granderson P – Soriano
OF – Ethier BN – Price
Util – Bourn BN – Jenks
    Util – C. Gonzalez BN – Aardsma
    BN – Quentin
    BN – S. Drew

  142. Grey

    Grey says:

@HotZona: Your team looks a little weak on power if you play Bourn. If you switch him out for a different hitter then you’re weak on speed. So you’re gonna have to find a balance when using him. Your pitching looks fine.

  143. Rick Dempsey says:

Is there any scenario where you’d choose Braun over Utley strategy wise?

  144. Rick Dempsey says:

Do you know of a good link to lookup projected lineups for MLB teams. I don’t like the one’s I’ve checked out.
