Ken Griffey Jr. was traded to the Chicago White Sox for Danny Richar and Nick Masset. If that excites you, I got this videotaped Connect Four match between my two twelve-year-old cousins that will blow your mind. Griffey’s barely a fifth outfielder in mixed leagues at this point in his career. I’d go out on a a pretty sturdy limb and say he’s probably available in most mixed leagues, or should be. Does the move to the White Sox/Cellular Field boost his value? Not really. He could get hot and hit 6 to 8 HRs in a month, but his average is a bit of a drain. I’d prefer to take a flier on the struggling mightily Steven Pearce than Griffey cause here’s the thing… A fifth outfielder is a spot to embrace risk. There’s no reason to play it safe with your fifth outfielder (same goes for Utility, MI and last guys on the staff i.e. Gio Gonzalez, Santiago Casilla, Corpas, Kershaw, etc.). Playing it safe with the end pick guys on your team lands you in third place wondering how things could’ve been different. This is, of course, mixed league talk. In an AL-Only league, Griffey’s worth a waiver claim or some free agent bucks. He is, however, what he is, which is a fading superstar.

This trade does have some indirect fantasy baseball repercussions. Swisher and Konerko got the ‘ol “How’s Your Father?” this morning. The ‘ol “Put Up Or Shut Up.” The ‘ol “What Have You Done For Me Lately?” Frankly, those two bums should be made to platoon carrying the piss bucket. Neither is worth the energy it’s taking me to type this– Also, I don’t think Guillen will sit Thome and slot Griffey into DH. Thome’s hitting. Why penalize the guy that’s doing his job? He’s currently better than Griffey. All this could be moot the moment Guillen decides it’s a good idea to slot Griffey into centerfield and Griffey thinks he’s 24 again and pulls a hammy.

Over in the opening in the Reds outfield, there’s now a spot for Norris Hopper or Corey Patterson. If that excites you, I have a videotaped Connect Four match between two Civil War reenactors. If Corey gets hot, he could be good for a boatload of steals, but so far this year, he looks like a shell of a shell of his former self. Meanwhile, Hopper looked decent last year with some speed and average. But this year, to paraphrase Thing 1 and Thing 2 from Flavor of Love 3, Hopper has been exposed.

  1. Donny says:

As a Reds fan, I’m thrilled that he’s gone. I’ll never forget the day I found out we traded for him. I think I jumped up in the air. I definitely pumped my fist. “We didn’t even have to give up Pokey Reese!!!!1” Then all he did was alternate between sucking and rehabbing. All with a bad attitude. See ya, Grumpy.

  2. royce! says:

I’ve read rumors about this opening up the possibility of Nelson Cruz heading to CIN (for whom, I know not, although anyone that could start has to be an improvement for their rotation). That’s more exciting than twelve year olds playing connect four. That’s like orangutans playing battleship!

  3. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Donny: Ha! Pokey Reese, nice.

@royce!: I’ve heard Cruz may be coming the Reds way too. He would be a very interesting name, especially in NL-Only leagues. I’d go as far to say he’d be like two chimps playing Win, Lose or Draw.

  4. Freak says:

I have heard that with the Griffey trade that Hairston will be the new starting CF with Bruce Almighty slotting into Right. Hairston has lots of eligibility, a great batting average and speed. Go pick him up.

  5. Frank Rizzo says:

    Miggy trade offer update…

    What about this…

    Give Miggy/McLouth/Soto

    Get A-Rod/Delgado/Mauer

May give up a few HR’s from Soto but I’m making that up in other areas of this trade and Mauer will be better for R’s, RBI, and average.

    This is hard.

  6. Grey

    Grey says:

@Frank Rizzo: Honestly, I think you’re going the wrong way. I like the original trade better than these “fixes.” Why can’t you do a Miggy/Pence for Arod? Will he not do it? What about Miggy and some other schmohawk for Arod?

  7. Grey

    Grey says:

@Freak: Yeah, he would be interesting slotted in there. This is assuming Dusty makes an interesting choice.

  8. Frank Rizzo says:

He won’t do a Pence trade. He already has OF that’s doing what Pence is. He wants McLouth because of what he’s done in the past. I’d like to make any upgrade I can for the playoffs and not have to have either McLouth/Victorino/Pence on my bench when they’re hot.

We aren’t all that compatible yet I’d love to make it happen.

The other trade I mentioned with another guy you said you liked but others I’ve talked to said it was not good. I haven’t even offered so I don’t know if the guy’s down with it.

    Give Miggy/Cain

    Get Texeira/Billingsley

Others have told me that Billingsley will not make up for what I lose in the Miggy/Tex deal.

My pitching staff would be unstoppable if I made that trade though…

    Bedard (DL of course)
    Wainwright (DL)

  9. Grey

    Grey says:

@Frank Rizzo: Okay, what I’m not understanding is you have Miggy and Cain, two guys that been incredible for the last month and you want to get rid of them. They’re not sell high guys. Cain is good. Miggy is great. Tex is great, Billingsley can be great. The trade’s a wash. It could go either way. It’s really not a trade you make to upgrade your team. Trade Miggy and Baker for Arod. Trade Miggy and Bedard for Arod.

  10. Frank Rizzo says:

I don’t know what the hell I’m doing anymore.

I’d just like to get as close to a flawless team as possible for the playoffs.

    Thanks for the help.

  11. RT says:

Is it possible that Coletti is more of an idiot now, than when he signed AJones?

  12. Grey

    Grey says:

@RT: As I said in the forums, I think the Dodgers are just battling the Angels for front page sports section stories/TV revenue.

  13. RT says:

@Grey: Just read it. True dat.

  14. IowaCubs

    IowaCubs says:

@Grey: Andy LaRoche is part of the deal. He starts at 3B now for the Pirates. Would you drop one of the following for him:

    Inge (it’s a 2 C league)
    Jeff Samardzija

Dumb question blinded by my blind cubbie love… moving on.

  15. JR says:

I dropped Kuroda after he got hammered last time. Should I reconsider now that the Dodgers have Manny?

    Other options: Wandy, Wakefield, EJackson

  16. BigFatHippo says:

    @Iowa, Grey

Will Andy only hit in the first half of the season? Different kind of platoon with him and Adam?

  17. IowaCubs

    IowaCubs says:

@BigFatHippo: Wow, that’s interesting. That would be like the Bizarro LaRoche.

In other news, Jim Edmonds has my RCL heart… and Eric Gagne is a douchebag.

  18. Grey

    Grey says:

@JR: Kuroda hasn’t looked so great recently even the last start aside. I’d give Wandy a whirl, but not his next start.

    @BigFatHippo: Ha!

  19. BigFatHippo says:

Gagne will always be a douchebag and Jimmy Baseball will always patrol center field in Cardinal Red in the land of Hippo fantasy.

Oh, and Halle Berry will make me pancakes every morning.

  20. Mike says:

got offered Wright and Marmol for Berkman and Nolasco….. make the move??

  21. Scott S. says:

This is great, I never thought I’d see many in another uniform. My Red Sox friends are upset, but of course all their Facebook status’s are something along the lines of “Good luck Joe Torre.. Manny being Manny is getting pretty old.”

Red Sox fans are among the most optimistic, but you look just plain stupid when you try to act cheerful about the departure of Manny and two other players and get Jason Bay in return.

It needed to be done, but it cost them this season. They’ll probably sign Teixeira in the offseason.

Where did all this hostility come from? And where was Big Papi to keep Manny in check?

  22. cruisinkc says:

So the other night I was working on a Rollins for Howard trade… and it still isn’t done. His latest offer to me is
    I get: Howard and Haren
    I give: Rollins, Markakis, Billingsley

I feel like i’m giving up a lot and I like billingsley better then haren for the rest of the year.

is Rollins + Markakis = Howard

  23. Grey

    Grey says:

@Mike: I’d make that trade, yup.

@Scott S.: I’m surprised Sox fans are being as callous as they have been about this. Manny’s a lot more than just a OF. The Sox just lost a bit of their heart.

    @cruisinkc: Don’t do that trade.

  24. cruisinkc says:

@Grey: what about rollins and vazquez for howard? I’m not even sure he’ll take it but i think its a lot more fair then the one he proposed me.

  25. Grey

    Grey says:

@cruisinkc: Sure, but he’s not doing that.

  26. BigFatHippo says:

    So is that it?

Is the trade deadline over or is it midnight?

  27. BigFatHippo says:

I’m down with that, Rodney and Broxton look to remain as closers.

Denny Bautista remains a Denny Bautista.

  28. BigFatHippo says:

Let me get this straight, Manny, Bay, Laroche, Junior and Arthur Rhodes move.

Cruz stays in the minors, and the Cards get nobody.

Really busy at work today, couldn’t keep up with the thread.(pops beer can)

  29. Grey

    Grey says:

@BigFatHippo: That’s right, man. Only fantasy baseball value changes, in mixed leagues, are Swisher, Konerko, Bay and LaRoche. There will be a post late tonight/tomorrow morning for a roundup.

  30. BigFatHippo says:

I assume Konerko rides pine and Swisher K’s 1B. I mean plays.

Any hope of Rhodes taking Greggs spot in Fla? I already added him in the RCL so you can answer.

  31. Scott S. says:

Today’s trades for the Dodgers and White Sox don’t make much sense to me. Last I checked, the Dodgers need a SS.. Not a 10th outfielder. But maybe they figure they can put Manny at SS and he won’t know the difference. And why did the White Sox trade for a guy with no legs and a slower bat and expect him to play CF..? I feel like the trade actually makes the White Sox worse.

But anyways.. I’m gonna start checking TMZ regularly for any Manny sightings. I expect him to be out in Hollywood partying with Lindsey Lohan and Hannah Montana on a nightly basis.

  32. Grey

    Grey says:

@BigFatHippo: Rhodes over Gregg? No, why? Gregg’s been under a 3 ERA every month this year.

@Scott S.: Yeah, the trades make no sense. Manny was for TV purposes to battle the Angels. The Sox traded for a player they already own in spades, Swisher, Konerko, Dye, Thome, Quentin, Crede, etc. They’re all the same player. Really baffling decisions.

  33. Denys says:

Gotta LOVE a base steal by Teixeira!

  34. Grey

    Grey says:

@Denys: Did you see who hit a home run? Juan Rivera.

  35. BigFatHippo says:

Yeah I know, dumb question. Guess with all this trade speculation my head was spinning.

My only hope now is he comes down with Jockular Sphincteritis.

  36. BSA says:

Time to drop Bedard for Liriano? Bullshit league has 5 weeks plus 2 weeks playoffs. If Bedard isn’t throwing anything other than towels in the gym I project him to arrive, IF, in three weeks or so. Giving him maybe 4-5 starts.
Does Liriano offer much more than that? His numbers lately and attitude when he comes back is tempting.

  37. Grey

    Grey says:

@BSA: I’d make that move. You have little to lose.

  38. royce! says:

A guy in my league is interested in Scott Baker, but the only player on his team that I want and he would possibly consider is Chone Figgins. Is Figgins worth Baker? I know he was a while ago but am not sure about now.

  39. Denys says:

    @Grey: Drop LaRoche for?

  40. Grey

    Grey says:

@royce!: Figgins is one of the few guys that could steal 10-15 bases in a month. He could get real hot (he has been recently). If you need that sorta thing, I could definitely see making that trade.

  41. BSA says:

Making a decision on picking up a bench player next week – Baker or EE. similar to the Cuban Missile I like Bakers eligibility.

  42. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Denys: Huh? For who?

@BSA: I like Edwin, but I don’t see the point of having him on your bench. Go Baker!

  43. BSA says:

Having Baker and Davis now backup Fielder, Utley, and Wright while having Alexei backs up Tulo in case he smashes anymore bats as well as Ankiel in case this ab issue is more than they are letting on.
I like those power bats that can play multiple positions.

  44. Steve says:

@Grey: You still holding Denny Bautista?

  45. JR says:

    Scherzer Update:

    3 1P, 1 H, O R, 1 BB, 7 K (50 P)

One forgets how he was dominated AAA this year (as much as Liriano has of late). He started in Tuscon tonight. This fits a recent pattern of throwing him on exactly three days rest. (There not even thinking about throwing him back to back). First he went 2 innings, then he went 2 innings, and now he went 3 inninings. He threw exactly 50 pitches.

Relief role? Maybe. But they just traded for Rauch. I think they’re stretching him out. The D’Backs are going to have to battle (see the Dodgers), how long are they going to go with Petit?

I’m buying. This could be Joba circa 2007. It’s “upside” at the margins, as Grey would say. The best thing? Everyone’s got those junky speculative closers around….

    I’m dropping Rodney for Scherzer.

    I’m happy.

  46. JR says:

At worse, Mr. Bs will lover Scherzer.

(Did I get that right? I need a pocket version of the glossary)

  47. Denys says:

    @Grey: For Rivera.

  48. Grey

    Grey says:

@BSA: Okay, but middle relievers can give you stats when your starters aren’t going where extra bats on your bench don’t give you anything.

    @Steve: Nah, he’s gone.

@JR: Sounds like a decent bet on Scherzer, but I wouldn’t have dropped Rodney for him. Saves are a category whereas possible rookie call-ups are not. Though Rodney might get replaced at any point, so it’s not awful.

You are a Mr. B, all right.

@Denys: I’m assuming you’re asking about Juan Rivera and Adam LaRoche. I’m not sure because you’re writing in half sentences. I would drop Adam LaRoche for Juan Rivera.

  49. BSA says:

Grey, You mean like what Gagne did for me yesterday. 0.0 IP 1 ER, 1 BB and and ejection.

  50. Joe says:

I just traded Corey Hart and Matt Garza for Dan Haren and Fernando Rodney.

Any thoughts Grey, my weakest categories are K’s and saves, and i already have Markakis, Quentin, Rios and Matsui if he comes back in the OF, so i felt Hart was expendable. I’m not comfortable with Garza.

  51. Grey

    Grey says:

@Joe: Not sure how reliable Rodney will be going forward, but Haren hasn’t shown any signs of let down so you should come out ahead.

  52. wakeNbake says:

@Grey: Hey Grey, sry I had to make a post here because I couldnt open the link to your latest post for some reason. Anyway, I got offered Pujols and Lidge for Berkman, Morrow and Lilly. I need saves bad and Morrow isnt a definite to close nemore… look like a good move?

  53. Scott S. says:

Red Sox fans really over-did it tonight. It is as if Jason Bay is their new god and they must worship him. I was hoping they’d boo him his first atbat but they gave him like 10 standing ovations throughout the game.

Makes me think of Jennifer Aniston.. She acted all happy and lovey-dovey to be with Vince Vaughn after she and Brad split. But it was fake, she just wanted to cover up the pain and depression of losing Brad. Just as Red Sox fans are faking their love for Bay to cover up the pain of losing Manny, a World Series MVP and one of the greatest personalities in MLB history.

“If I was going to go to Green Bay, it was going to be as a backup…”

I don’t know why this guy doesn’t speak to the press more often.

  54. Mike says:

@Scott S.: Thats because Sox fans are in denial over losing Manny. They wanna pretend like everything is OK. Guess what Sox fans

  55. Mike says:

@Scott S.: Thats because Sox fans are in denial over losing Manny. They wanna pretend like everything is OK. Guess what Sox fans…. losing Manny Ramirez does not make your team better!

  56. JR says:

That’s one of the greatest video clips ever. And I grew up watching “This Week in Baseball” with Mel Allen.

  57. Get Figgy With It says:

Everyone is acting like Bay is some slouch crappy OF and that Manny is still hitting bombs like it is 2005…well I hate to break this to you but it is 2008…and Manny has lost interest in putting up the stats he used to…he’ll still be good, but not the Manny of old…and his defense is still horrendous…it was evident tonight when he turned a possible double into an easy triple because he couldn’t cut the ball of before it hit the wall…I think the best part of the whole trade might be when the Dodgers don’t make the playoffs and the Sox will still have Bay next year plus the money from Manny and Schilling’s salary to sign some ballers

  58. Grey

    Grey says:

@JR: I know, it is good.

@Get Figgy With It: Bay was really bad for two years. Like worse than Manny on his worse day bad, for entire seasons.
