Sometimes you just can’t trade a guy in your fantasy baseball league.  For whatever reason, the rest of the teams don’t believe in your guy.  Whether it’s someone who has been doing well who people aren’t sure if they’re for real (Corey Hart) or someone who has been struggling (Berkman), no one in your league will trade for them.  You’ve tried to sell lower than even their value warrants, but no bites. So you go even lower and, before you know it, you’re trading Berkman for a VHS copy of The Secret Life of Desmond Pfeiffer.  So what do you do when no one wants to give you any value for one of your guys?

Let’s look at the guys that are supposedly playing above their heads (the Harts).  The best thing you can do with these guys is for you to trust in their value.  Say you have Jason Bay and Hart, and you’re stuck benching Hart because you just don’t have room.  But you really need a starter.  You know Hart is worth a starter, but no one’s biting.  So trade Bay for a starter and slot Hart into your lineup.  In summation, trust in the guys playing well and trade the names.

Next, the guys who don’t have any value because they’re sucking wind like a burro in Machu Picchu, the Berkman case example.  There’s two things you can do here.  Drop them so they stop sucking the life out of your team.  For instance, some might remember when I said I dropped Chipper during the 1st week of the season.  I knew no one would trade me anything for Chipper.  I miscalculated at the auction and cut my losses quickly.  I also knew that people wouldn’t let him sit on waivers.  Sure enough, he was picked up and dropped numerous times, i.e., he did damage to my opponents’ offensive categories, not mine.  ‘Natch!  The other thing you can do with an underperforming player, trade them for a player that someone else can’t trade.  Someone who owns Berkman and is benching them would trade you Berkman for a mystery bag of leftovers.  Someone can’t stand the sight of Stephen Drew on their team?  They might take Berkman for him.  Instead of chewing gum, chew bacon!

  1. Cheese

    Cheese says:

    Mmmmm bacon… I kind of feel this way for Adam Lind. Where does his value stand right now?

  2. GopherDay says:

    Grey, you really are constant with your afternoon postings! 1:00 every day!

    I like bacon!

  3. xopchipili says:

    missed the new post notice so I’ll drop this here too

    been offered Halladay for Wright in my 9 team 6×6 (OPS and K/9) league. I could use the help in ERA and WHIP but Wright has really been carrying me offensively and I’d be stuck plugging his position with something like Freese, Kouzmanoff or Wigginton. Also its a 1250 inning cap, and there’s a lot of decent P talent on the waiver wire (which makes playing the spot-starter game fun and productive but also makes real premium P’s like Halladay even more valuable). Really conflicted on this one…

  4. AubreyHuffingGlue says:

    What sort of pitcher should I be targeting for J.Garcia plus Bay? What about Garcia plus Hart?

  5. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Cheese: Lind’s an untradeable guy unless you sell him very short. He has no value.

    @GopherDay: Ha!

  6. Grey

    Grey says:

    @xopchipili: I wouldn’t do it.

    @AubreyHuffingGlue: Wainwright? Carp? Not really going to get value for Garcia. He’d be a guy I would just ride out if I didn’t get value.

  7. Cheese

    Cheese says:

    @Grey: That’s what I figured…

    What about Lind/K Johnson for Zobrist/Hart

    Think I could pull that off?

  8. xopchipili says:

    also I’ve been dealing with that same Berkman issue. He’s on my bench thanks to a timely Glaus waiver wire snatch, and I know I can’t get any value in a trade. I’ve been content to just hold him and hope things turn around. I’ve been tempted to cut him, but I keep hearing rumors he might be traded to a contender…am I wrong in holding out hope that he soon finds himself, say, manning the DH spot that was supposed to be Nick Johnson in the Yankee lineup? I feel like with a change of scenery and a lineup that can hit around him he could be due for a massive bounceback…

  9. Black Beard says:

    Sandoval for Cliff Lee?

  10. timSTi says:

    @Grey: You like Haren for Rollins better than Price/Alcides for Rollins? 10 tm 7 keeper.

    Also, Ad Laroche or Gaby to replace slumping Gomes.

  11. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Cheese: Sure, try it. Zobrist probably makes it impossible though.

    @xopchipili: Depends on how badly you need bench depth. I own him in a 20 team league. In a 12 team league, I would drop him. If he goes to the Yankees though, it would be huge.

    @Black Beard: Lee…

  12. Grey

    Grey says:

    @timSTi: Gaby… No, I’d prefer to give Price.

  13. Fletch says:

    @Grey: Pence = 3 run jack off Cain in the first.

  14. Fletch says:

    @Grey: Just dropped Cecil for Medlen…good move?

    Also, I offered a guy Verlander, Glaus and Carmona for Prado and Lincecum. What do you think?

  15. Giacomo says:

    @Grey: What about Glaus? Do you believe in the year he has put together or is it about to come to an end quickly?

  16. TheRealTaz says:

    No one wants my Jaime! But I should be able to deal him for Stephen Drew. I’ve got Sexei Alexei at short right now. Does that deal sound equitable?

  17. Giacomo says:

    @Grey: Also, what do you think of Jaso? Him or Soto for the rest of the year? Soto just seems to be sitting so often lately.

  18. timSTi says:

    @Grey: I’m GIVING Rollins. Sorry for the confusion.

  19. Matt says:

    @Grey: Can you elaborate on what you think of Volquez for the rest of the year? Maybe slot him between two active pitchers rank-wise?

    Thanks as always.

  20. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Fletch: Medlen, sure. I’d take Verlander’s side if you need a 1st baseman.

    @Giacomo: If he avoids injury, he’s a 30 homer guy.

    @TheRealTaz: Nope

    @Giacomo: I’d want Soto.

    @timSTi: I’d want Rollins.

  21. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Matt: He’ll be the lead in tomorrow’s Buy/Sell.

  22. chrisbenson says:

    grey…2 part question:

    is there a big difference between napoli and doumit?

    if not, would you trade napoli for vasquez or baker?

  23. herschel says:

    @Grey: al escobar vs evercab? saw evercab had a sb in his last rehab start….any sign of things to come?

  24. Fletch says:

    @Grey: Which 2 do you like out of Dunn, Sandoval, Bautista and Prado for the long haul?

  25. JT says:

    Why do so few owners like Stephen Drew for fantasy? I can concede that he’s not a world beater, but c’mon, is SS so deep that a guy who hits like a yawnstipated OF gets this disrespected?

  26. TheFunk says:

    Hey Grey, I’m Carrying Carlos Santana and Montero right now. Who would you trade, who would you keep? Not a keeper league. I think both have decent trade value, and I need SP or someone who steals bags. But not like a petty criminal, I need lots of bags.

  27. Mike says:

    Do you think Lind turns it around at all this year?

  28. timSTi says:

    @Grey: Who would you rather have on your team for this year on in a 10 team keeper:

    Haren or Price

    As you can tell I’m working on trading Rollins+ an SP+ and can’t gauge which of those is the better in a keeper.

  29. Grey

    Grey says:

    @chrisbenson: Nope, sure. Vazquez…

    @herschel: EverCab is still a .230 hitter who is coming off a leg injury.

    @Fletch: Dunn, Sandoval…

    @JT: Don’t kill the messenger.

    @TheFunk: Either of them. Whichever gets more… Probably Santana.

    @Mike: He’s not hitting 35 homers with a .280 average. Might be to 25 homers and .250.

    @timSTi: Haren…

  30. ThePoonTycoon says:

    @TheRealTaz: i’d roll with garcia/sexei. drew and sexei won’t amount to much difference come sept.

  31. Big Nate says:

    By beloved 23rd round keeper in a 12 team league, Billy Butler, just isn’t rounding (ha – he’s fat…) into form like I had planned this season. The trade offers that I used to receive early in the season are no longer there. What is this guy’s value? Has he hit his ceiling? Is he destined to be Dante Bichette lite? Is 30 / 100 even a possibility this year?

    I have him under contract next year in the 22nd round then in 2011 as a 21st rounder but I’m wondering if I move Butler for a useful piece and grab Gaby Sanchez off of waivers?

  32. Donnie Baseball says:

    What’s up with the Astros beating up on these top pitchers?

    And I would hold steady with Berkman. He hasn’t been that bad, remember he missed some spring and the whole 1st month.

  33. JT says:

    Can I really ask anything of you in the comments even if it has nothing to do with the article? Wow! So is the name of Lady Gaga’s album the most ironic thing eva?

  34. ThePoonTycoon says:

    @Big Nate: eh, only thing butler isn’t doing is hitting bombs. the RBIs aren’t necessarily his fault. butler’s more of a 20-25 HR guy than a 30-35 HR guys anyway. for a 20 something round pick, i wouldn’t trade him away unless you were getting damn good value. i would gladly give up a 20 something round pick for him and either plug him as my 1B if i missed on the top tier guys or use him a a util guy.

  35. ThePoonTycoon says:

    so who all benched garza today? those 8 innings and the W and sub-1.00 whip were awfully nice for me.

    reason #672 not to sit your quality SPs against crappy offenses just because they had a rough few weeks.

  36. Terrence Mann says:

    No way would I bench him at home against SD. The WHIP helps, for sure. Nice to see he worked his way into a win today.

  37. jwallace says:

    I am considering looking to a middle reliever to help out with K’s and ratios thanks to DL-created vacancies on my roster…any suggestions on who might be available in my league?

  38. ichirosan says:

    Been there… I’m stuck with Austin Jackson in a 20-man dynasty league because NOBODY believes in him (the best offer I got was Chris Pérez, and that was when he was at the peak of his powers). I didn’t even play him because I have Holliday, Kemp, Hart and Robot Jones.

    My league is basically in full panic mode and nobody wants to make a trade unless they feel like the absolute winners of the deal or are in rebuilding mode and you sell the farm.

  39. ThePoonTycoon says:

    @Terrence Mann: someone asked earlier about sitting him. i said if you aren’t gonna start him against SD you might as well waive him cause you have no faith in him. i got a testy comment back about “suggesting to waive” a guy like garza.

  40. ThePoonTycoon says:

    @ichirosan: i wouldn’t trade for ajax either so they sound like a bunch of savvy owners to me that know he had an unsustainable BABIP combined with a very high K rate.

    @jwallace: look up free agent pitchers and sort by k/9. that’s what i do, then find some guys towards the top with good ratios. bonus points if they are likely to snag a few vulture saves.

  41. ThePoonTycoon says:

    sometimes you just have to accept you aren’t pulling to wool over the eyes of your leaguemates and deal with not being able to sell a guy high

    would you have traded a quality piece for ajax? if the answer is no then you can’t really get mad about your league’s lack of trading

  42. Grey

    Grey says:

    @penpen: In-effin-credible.

  43. Donnie Baseball says:

    Can you imagine the pitching staff the NL can put in the all-star game if they wanted.

    Start with Halladay for 2 in, then Ubaldo for 2, then J.J. for 2, then Strasburg for 2. Then I’d finish them off with Wagner, he’s been the most dominant.

  44. Donnie Baseball says:

    Lol at he hurt it cause he’s been running the bases so much lately.

    But that’s the thing with Hamilton, he’s like it was with Harden when he was good. You always have to hold your breath with them and pray they stay healthy.

  45. Nuke LaDouche says:

    @grey Better DL stash: ARam or Volquez?

  46. brad says:

    wand wagon rollin’. (sorta) he’s got as many hit batsmen as Ks, but still, in line for the win, 4 hits and 1 walk 2 unearned over 6? i’ll take it. now do it again and i might start you after that.

  47. hoju says:

    @Donnie Baseball: And yet they’ll still lose. And it still won’t affect the outcome of the WS.

  48. Eddie says:

    Grady Sizemore and Jason Bartlett have both put me in the second position this season. I’ve got Rolen in the “everyone thinks its a mirage” position, but I’ve been starting him for almost two months so no real complaint there.

  49. big o says:

    i wasn’t being testy .
    just pointing out the absurdity of putting an ace on waivers ,
    simply because you don’t wish to start him for a particular match-up .

  50. ETMcgee says:

    saw that crawford left a game due to an injury. is it time to stash jennings?

  51. Elbert says:

    just got an interesting trade offer in my 16-team league; ever since some of my top positional players’ early season slumps, i’ve mired in 3 weeks losing streak, so i figure i would toss out U-Baldo, see where it leads; now my lineup is already featuring batters like A-Gon (SD), Longoria, Weeks, Car. Lee, Pence, A. Jones, Wieters, Posey, S-Rod, Furcal, minus Morales (damn you Angels!) etc.. another potent bat or 2 might just get me dominated all over my league mates.

    so here’s this offer i got from colleague; I give up U-Baldo & Weeks, for M. Holliday & A. Beltre.

    Should I press the almighty button? or should I stand pad & go with my lineup?

  52. Ryan Beariot says:

    Grey, thoughts on Matt Joyce (who TB just called up from AAA)?

  53. Fletch says:

    @Grey: Gallardo’s line this afternoon: 9 INN / 0 Runs / 5 Hits / 0 Walks / 12 K’s

  54. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Donnie Baseball: Yeah, seriously.

    @Nuke LaDouche: Depends on need… Aramis.

    @brad: Yup

    @Eddie: Yup

    @ETMcgee: Joyce was called up.

    @Elbert: The way you listed your lineup is confusing. Do you have room for Holliday and Beltre? Also, do you need Ubaldo? It’s fair, depends on needs.

    @Ryan Beariot: Eh, I’ll go over him tonight in the roundup.

    @Fletch: Nice

  55. Donnie Baseball says:

    @Ryan Beariot:

    not Grey, but as for Joyce, I’ve owned all of the Rays platoon guys at one point or another it seems. And none of them get enough playing time to be too valuable.

    Now they have 4 guys for 2 spots. Maybe even 5, since they were trying to Blalock at RF also.

  56. ThePoonTycoon says:

    @big o: and i was being hyperbolic about waiving matt garza, but my point was that if you aren’t willing to start a guy against the pads (or other similarly offensively challenged teams) then he obviously must be waiver wire fodder in your eyes. even if the guy has had a rough run of starts. guys have bad games and good games in back-to-back outings.

    if yesterday predicted today then fantasy baseball would be easy. if you let a quality arm guy get lit in your starting lineup then sit him against a weak offensive because you are shell-shocked then you are gonna miss out on the good starts that make his overall numbers palatable.

  57. ThePoonTycoon says:

    @Fletch: ::sigh::

    and i’m the guy that traded gallardo for haren back when gallardo was walking 4-5 guys an outing and barely lasting 6 innings (even though the Ks and era were nice).

    since that deal he’s (i believe) 2 CG shutouts. or at least 2 CGs. and his BBs have dropped significantly.

    damn you haren. damn you to hell.

  58. Howard says:

    @Grey Speaking of Rangers injuries, I’ve been trying to move Vmart for Nellie but I might have to add another player. Is Stanton too much? Or should I just stay away from Nellie and find another fish to pry?

  59. Elbert says:

    @Grey: I do have rooms for A. Beltre & Holliday, since our league features single slot for each infield+3 OF, plus 1 additional slot for IF & 2 slots for UTIL.

    In terms of pitching, we only allow 3 SP slots per week, plus 2 P & 2 RP; I love U-Baldo, but i still have reviving combo of Lee/Lilly/Scherzer/Floyd/Zambrano/Baker to choose from, so I think pitching will hold up.

    With loss of Morales I’ve been trying to fill up his slot contribution, but Burrell just can’t cut it, hence the temptation.

  60. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Howard: That’s fair for Cruz. Depends who else you can get, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Cruz is hurt again in another two weeks. Seems to be a recurring thing.

    @Elbert: I’d make the trade for Holliday there.

  61. Commish Cauda says:

    Is Hoffpauir a better H2H option at 2B than Freddy Sanchez?

  62. Howard says:

    Grey, In case have to replace Crawford who went down today: Pierre, Borbon, Podsednik or Pagan? Love those 10 team leagues! It’s a veritable SAGNOF candy store!

  63. cashmoney says:

    I really need pitching help…would u trade Holliday for CC and pence?

  64. ThePoonTycoon says:

    @Grey: i kinda feel like cruz is one of those untradeable guys. when he’s played he’s been far too good to trade for cheap. but given his DL stints, no one is willing to even consider paying close to value. might as well ride him out and cross your fingers.

  65. Grey

    Grey says:

    @cashmoney: Sure

    @ThePoonTycoon: Yeah, agreed. I’d love to own him when he’s hitting, but I wouldn’t trade for him. Too much injury risk.

  66. Long Bawls says:

    In a 6×6 H2H, I have Posey and mehish SP (Hamels, Nolasco, Liriano, Marcum, Vazquez). I tried to trade Posey on hype, but now I’m thinking of dropping him for DLR/2nd-half Arroyo/Volquez. I already have Montero at C. Smart? Dumb?

    p.s. You now have 4 lady readers. My GF and I have a quid pro quo: she reads one para of Razz per 10 minutes of watched-together Bravo reality show. Is that a fair trade?

  67. The Cow says:

    I apologize if this has been covered, but what is the difference between a “buy-low” guy and a struggling guy? For example, Jose Lopez is probably considered a buy-low candidate based upon previous seasons, but couldn’t the same be said for others, like Berkman or Carlos Lee? Granted, Berkman and Lee are older, but they have been, for the most part, much more consistent players for longer periods of time.

    Right now, Lopez is struggling something fierce, but I continually hear about him being a “buy-low” guy and that he will come around. Has he developed into the “struggling player” category as well?

  68. Grey

    Grey says:

    @The Cow: Berkman and Carlos Lee are much older. Players don’t decline at 26 (Lopez’s age). At least they shouldn’t. So people assume it’s a slump as opposed to career decline.

  69. Steve says:

    New Zealand eliminated from the World Cup without losing a game.

  70. genghis chone says:

    Who do you like better over the rest of the year, Posey or Santana?

  71. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Steve: You should root for the US. A real soccer country.

    @genghis chone: Santana…

  72. Black Beard says:

    Grey, Haren for Ells?

  73. @Steve: They didn’t win a game, either.

  74. Steve says:

    @Enrique: Quite so, but then nobody expected them to get so much as a draw in any of their games. I’m not really upset (it was a sarcastic booo!) – they did far better than I could have dared hope. And they are only the 4th team in World Cup history to be eliminated deespite being undefeated.

    @Grey: Sorry, but I’m hoping for Brazil, Spain, Argentina or Holland. Actually, anyone but England.

  75. @ichirosan: I feel your pain. I have a lot of the same problems finding trade partners in my keeper league. Things loosen up as we approach the deadline and the buyers and sellers become clear. I’d much rather make my moves sooner rather than later, since I hate to mortgage my future as I have done in past years… I tried to get rid of AJax all spring. Finally dumped him when Damon became available. It’s an OBP league, so I think I improved. Still pains me to have had to cut him since I’m always looking to flip for something.

    @Grey: Good article. I enjoy reading your take on strategy. Johan negotiations fell flat. Unfortunately his owner’s a Met fan too, so I have a feeling that played a part. I’m aiming lower for an SP now, since I’m having a bitch of a time finding a good match…

    How about Posey for Lilly in a keeper? Too lowball? Swish too much to give for Lilly? His owner’s got Suzuki at C and Blanco Polanco/Kouz at the CI (he had Kendry)

    Swish for Bills?

  76. Steve says:

    @Grey: Oh don’t worry, I’m on the USA’s side in all the big fights.

  77. Steve says:

    @3FingersBrown: Re: Hammel from the previous post. I’m sitting him too. I probably would have anyway, but I was up 3-2 in Wins to start the day and my Garza beating my opponent’s LeBlanc made it a no-brainer.

    Didn’t hurt that their Felix didn’t get a win either :-)

  78. @Steve: 3 runs off of my Waino in the 1st has me seriously considering starting Hammel and rolling the dice. My opponent got a rare Wandy win and leads W 2-1 now. With Dice on the mound for the Sawx, I like the Rox to win at home. This is tough. Decision may come down to the last minute…

  79. @Steve: Crap, I’m screwed. Too late to get Hammel in anyway. I didn’t realize that all of my SP slots were filled with guys whose games have started. With Waino getting pounded, this is turning into a very bad day for me.

    Damn, I should have gone out drinking tonight after all.

  80. Howard says:

    @Steve Hey I’m going for England!

  81. Grey

    Grey says:

    @3FingersBrown: I’d give Swish for Lilly or Bills. In that order.

  82. Fletch says:

    @Grey: What do you think of trading Crawford, Furcal & Tulo for Tex or Howard & Reyes?

  83. agarthered says:

    Hey Grey,

    Are you starting Dirty Sanchez against Boston tomorrow?

    Tough call after his rough outing against the Jays.

  84. Steve says:

    @3FingersBrown: At least the no-hitter’s been broken up.

  85. big o says:

    but wasn’t the scuttle that you guys
    got cheated by the italians ,
    or , am i confused ??

  86. Seequinn says:

    @Grey: Good piece. There is a third type of player I call Mattress Guys–players that have way more value to you than anyone else and are a bitch to move, like your mattress. They are usually category killer/all-stars like Mark Reynolds or Michael Bourne, guys that are impossibly frustrating to trade because you always get back fifty cents on your perceived dollar, but are too valuable to straight drop.

  87. Steve says:

    @big o: Well, they did score a goal by conning a penalty out of the referee (a guy took a dive in the penalty area), but by the same token, the goal we scored should probably have been disallowed for offside.

    There’s been a bit of talk here that “if it wasn’t for the penalty, we would have won”, but in reality they had 23 shots on goal and hit the post once with our goalkeeper hopelessly beaten, so a draw was probably a fair result.

  88. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Fletch: I’d take Tex or Howard and Reyes, I don’t see how you’re making either of those trades though.

    @agarthered: I’m starting him and praying.

    @Seequinn: Yeah, agreed. I kinda figured they fell into the Harts, but you might be right, they might be their own group.

  89. tHe ShiT says:

    @Grey: Hola, Grey! Got caught up doing more important shizz 2day. Gallardo was on fire and Garza’s start 2day showed me he’s not as bad as recent starts showed. Not that I was scared that much, though. Did you see that breakdown of his ERA by innings? Crazy shtuff. If he gets out of the first couple innings ok, he’s money.

  90. tHe ShiT says:

    What is up with Pacman? He’s gna turn it around, he’s not gna turn it around. Freakin dude needs 2 decide pronto! I got sonovabenched last nite, and only reason hes startin 2day is cuz its R. I got tired of playing the matchups cuz i get sonovabenched everytime. I hate carrying bench bats but Jones is 2 gd 2 drop… sorry 4 the rant ppl

  91. Grey

    Grey says:

    @tHe ShiT: Yeah, similar to Verlander and lots of big time pitchers. For some reason, the beginning of the game is always their toughest. I think Jones already turned it around.

  92. @Steve: Oh it’s baaaaad. My opponent had Morrow going against Waino. To make it worse, I have a side bet going on the week… My attorney recommends heavy drinking and firearms usage.

    BTW: What the hell is going on with the Cardinal’s lineup? They really suffer without Ludwick huh?

  93. Steve says:

    @3FingersBrown: I think we’d rather Hammel pitched well, obviously, but there’s still plenty of time for things to go wrong ;-)

  94. paulzone says:

    want to make a prediction for HRs and RBIs for Fielder at year end?

    I could use some extra power…Might be able to deal Hughes or Latos straight up for him…Kind of a no brainer unless you think he is going to end up with 25 hrs and 65 rbis…

  95. Joe B says:

    Thinking about offering this trade… fair or no?

    I get: J Rollins and T Hunter

    He gets: B McCann, H Pence, and C Hamels

    I have M Montero and C Santana also at catcher. I also have C Billingsley and E Bedard coming of the DL soon. I can obviously take both the losses at C and SP (I have J Johnson and J Weaver as my top pitchers without Hamels), but he may want J Johnson instead of Hamels. I am a little scared of JRoll’s injuries, but I’ve been swaping scrub SS of waivers week to week (J Peralta, O Cabrera, A Escobar, etc.) What to do…

  96. Alex says:

    looking to upgrade at SS in a 20 team head to head league

    I offered up Jose Guillen and Alex Gonzalez for Andrus. the guy has pretty bad power guys and i have too many OF’ers for a 20 team (A.Jones,G.Jones,C.Gonzalez, Brett Gardner, Lind and Colvin)

    Do you think that i offered enough? if not what should i try involving a Of’er?

  97. Awesomus Maximus

    Awesomus Maximus says:

    10-Team, 5×5, H2H… have Posey at C, and Hanley/Phillips/Weeks/Kinsler at SS/2B/MI/UTIL (Markakis on the Bench). Got an offer of V-Mart for Kinsler. I need power more than speed right now, so I guess it just comes down to whether or not Kinsler for V-Mart (assuming he’s not injured) is fair value. Or would you ride the Kinsler hot streak a bit longer and see where it heads?

  98. Adam says:

    Just got offered a big trade in a 5×5 10 team keeper…

    I get: Votto, Reyes, Glaus, Cueto, Balfour (would be cut)
    He gets: Tex, Mini-Donk, Utley, Greinke, Simon

    My team is currently middling in 6th place, although only 14 points out of first. I’m pretty weak in RBI, SB, W and ratios, and absolutely awful in average…

    My top five keeper choices if I pull the trigger would be Votto, Reyes, Werth, Lincecum and CarGo, with Grandy and Hughes in the discussion (kept in round they’re drafted, upping Hughes’s stock)…am I selling too low on my other guys?

    Josh Hamilton’s new nickname is the “Studmiser”… this is his song:

    I’m Mr. Studmiser, I’m Mr. Stud.
    People think I still smoke crack, but now I only hit home runs.
    My average is sweet and the RBIs are just as nice.
    Grey was skeptical of me this year, but now he knows.
    That’s why they call me Studmiser… I’m too much.

    If you don’t know how sing this song in the right way then go to this link and practice it dammit —>

  100. Joe B says:

    @ Adam: You’s is getting smoked son… nay to that shizer. Tex and Utley are first rounders and you ain’t getting none back, they will produce like studs… Glaus??? No stanks… move on my friend. Don’t trade just to make a trade… Votto and Reyes are nice, but giving up Greinke for Cueto too. I think I just vomitted in my mouth. Mini-Donkey is just a throw in right? (sarcasm intended to the infinity degree)

  101. Grey

    Grey says:

    @paulzone: 35 homers, 90 RBIs

    @Joe B: Looks okay for you. I’d prefer Reyes to Rollins.

    @Alex: I don’t think he’s going to do it, but you can try.

    @Awesomus Maximus: That’s fair.

    @Adam: Too many moving pieces.

    @Joe B: Ha, nice! I wasn’t skeptical of him though. I own him everywhere.

  102. Awesomus Maximus

    Awesomus Maximus says:

    @Grey: Thanks, methinks fair, as well. He also just emailed me that he’d do Zobrist for Kinsler… so now the question is which is going to be the better combo?

    V-Mart/Markakis (result of V-Mart for Kinsler trade)

    Posey/Zobrist (result of Zobrist for Kinsler trade)

  103. paulzone says:

    @Grey: is that worh latos or hughes?

    other sps: wainwright, hamels, haren, oswalt, nolasco, jurjens (dl)

  104. Adam says:

    @Joe B: @Grey: Thanks for talking some sense into me, a combination of fantasy baseball frustration and a pissed off 4 month old baby are driving me a little bit crazy…

    I really like Votto though, I see him being a 1st rounder next season too…see any way to assemble those players into a better trade for me?

  105. Joe B says:

    Grey… I didn’t know you have Studmiser everywhere… Kudos. I fleeced a guy in my roto league to the tune of Mr. Stud and H Bell for D’Ellsbury… MWHAHAHAH! The Studmiser lives on in infamy!!! I don’t even care if Bell gets traded and isn’t the closer anymore. Hamilton is worth his weight in crack… SNOOTCHIE BOOTCHIES.

  106. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Awesomus Maximus: V-Mart side is better.

    @paulzone: Sure… Hughes.

    @Adam: No problem. Try Greinke straight up for Votto then start adding players who he might want. But no big names.

    @Joe B: That’s hilarious.

  107. @Steve: You were saying? Ok well I don’t feel so bad now. Of course I’d rather seem him do well, but at least I didn’t get sonavabenched. Kinda figured that’s how it would go down. Sox smoked Ubaldo last night, so it happens. I still like Hammel… Waino disappointed me, but he’s allowed a bad game after being so good all year long.

    @Joe B: Word! I don’t have him on any teams and even mocked my man for keeping him – but as someone who used to like to party a little too much I root for the guy.

    Meanwhile my weeks’ gone to hell. From up 6 – 4 to down 7 – 2. Against my most hated rival no less – I’ve taken this guy’s money every time we’ve played for 3 years now! Still got time to beat this SOB

  108. Joe B says:

    @Adam: I agree about Votto… probably a 1st round candidate next year, but so will Tex in all probablity. Maybe Mini-Donks and Utley for Votto and Reyes would work… not sure who would fill the chasm of 2B for you though… Reyes could be back as a 1st rounder next year, but beware the injury risk as he depends on those Greek god-like legs for his production… Not sure your partner (due to the baby we assume it’s not your civil partner) would part with the hot hitting of Reyes and the steady Votto, but you could try it… maybe when Tex and Utley start raking like they should in the summer months.

  109. Awesomus Maximus

    Awesomus Maximus says:

    @Grey: Yeppers… just requires waiting to see if V-Mart’s healthy. Trying to get the other guy to do a Kinsler/Bourn for V-Mart/Zobrist in the meantime, get the best of both worlds. What? He needs speed… don’t judge me!

  110. Fletch says:

    @Grey: You like either Crawford or J. Upton straight up for Reyes?

  111. GopherDay says:

    I read something interesting today. Carl Crawford, Michael Bourn, and recent Astro call up and Bourn clone Jason Bourgeious all played outfield on the same little league team. Sheesh!!! Talk about a crazy fast little league team!

  112. Steve says:

    @Grey: I’m getting seriously worried about my reputation as a ‘cooler’.

    I’m looking after my sister’s team while she’s away in Europe. Some of the players I’ve picked up for here in recent days – Wuertz, Okajima and Takahashi…

  113. @Steve: Am I weird to get strangely aroused by the idea of a woman playing in a deep league?

  114. danimal35 says:

    H2H, 12-team…With a staff of F-Her, Josh Johnson, Dirty Sanchez, Medlen, Cueto, Cecil, and Nolasco, I generally do well in the pitching categories (QS vice W’s) but I have a pretty big hole at 1B and SS with Smoak and Desmond…DLR, Bedard and Volquez are available on DL and Slowey, E-Jax, Wandy are also out there…

    My thought process is this: I have a ton of outfielders, no infield depth and my team is barely treading water in 5-8th place. I just need to make the playoffs and then the rest is mostly luck, right (joys of H2H)? I feel like I could try and trade JJ and F-Her for a couple of big bats at 1B, 2B & SS and piecemeal and spot-start SPs the rest of the way…what bats should I look at for either of those two or should scrap the whole idea and suffer with mediocrity all around?

  115. bm says:

    Grey, kinda glad you used Bay as an example in today’s post since I’m wondering which starters I should be targeting to swap out Bay. Dude’s been mediocre at best so far this season, so I figure people aren’t exactly rushing to trade for him. But like you said, his name has value.

    So for a nonkeeper league, would Haren be a reasonable target? Any other potential targets? Thanks Grey.

  116. Steve says:

    @3FingersBrown: No – it’s fine. She loves sport in general too.

  117. Steve says:

    @3FingersBrown: We count Holds. She lost interest after about 10 rounds of the draft (Fail!) and didn’t draft any closers, so I’ve been picking up MRs for her.

    Without a lot of success, obviusly…

  118. Martin says:

    @grey- would u start dirty sanchez tom @ Bos, Medlen vs DET or Richard @ Florida in a 12 team mixed league tom?

  119. Grey

    Grey says:

    @GopherDay: Damn, they should test that Little League team for greenies.

    @Steve: Don’t touch David Hernandez, please.

    @danimal35: Big names only. Reyes, Rollins, Fielder, Tex, etc.

    @bm: I think you have to go lower still. Maybe try Hamels… Maybe Verlander after his last bad outing. Maybe Volquez and hope he comes back strong.

    @Martin: I’m rolling Sanchez in every league I own him, which is a lot. It’s not without risk though. Medlen’s less risky if you only have start one.

  120. Adam says:

    @Joe B: Kelly Johnson is in my MI spot, so 2B would be covered. However, I need a 3B back in any trade for Mini-Donk, which is the only reason Glaus was included in the offer. MD’s average is depressing, and talk of a lingering injury lowers my hopes of him upping the average to the respectability range and throwing in some SBs to go with his power…

    I countered with my RoboJones, KJ, Greinke and Street for his Votto, Reyes and Romero…any chance this gets accepted or too lowball?

  122. NukeLaDouche says:

    Cain or Weaver rest of year?

  123. fitz says:

    Nolasco or Morrow? in a 10 team H2H non-keeper

  124. NukeLaDouche says:

    @fitz: ugh. tough choice. i’d go with morrow but only start him at home.

  125. DrEasy says:

    I came here to ask the same question re: starting Sanchez against Boston. Does it change anything if I say my league has an innings cap, and that I’m +91 in my projected pace (although I also have Hughes and expect him to be shut down more and more often), not to mention I’m leading in ERA and am second in WHIP?

    I’m tempted to let him sit one game, even if it’s to be sonavabenched. I promise I won’t come here and vent if it happens.

  126. NukeLaDouche says:

    @DrEasy: I would definitely sit him in that situation if it was me. No question about it.

  127. DrEasy says:

    @NukeLaDouche: Thanks, I needed the confirmation.

  128. danimal35 says:

    @Grey: I made some feeler offers for:

    F-Her/Wagner for Phillips/Rollins

    F-Her/JJ/Wagner for Cano/Fielder

    F-Her/JJ/Wagner for Utley/A-Gonz

    should I withdraw any of them?
